Question:

I own an Infiniti QX80 SUV. Im looking for a cargo carrier that connects to my trailer hitch. I need it to be big enough to hold suitcases for 4 of us. I need it to be weather proof and secure.

The Infiniti QX56 underwent a re-naming process with the 2014 model year at which time it became known as the QX80, however cargo carrier fits for the two versions are the same since only 2-inch Class III hitches are offered for the vehicle.

The 2-inch Class III hitches for your QX56 share a substantial 600-lb tongue weight capacity. This means that you can use a high-capacity cargo carrier and use every bit of its capacity for your luggage. Even if you don't need a 500-lb-rated basket it is always a good idea to build some safety margin into your set up.

You will need to prioritize your desired features. If maximum weight capacity is the goal then you'll want a flat carrier like the Surco # 52018F which holds 500-lbs and folds up against the vehicle when not carrying cargo. This type of carrier gives you the most weight capacity, but it clearly cannot be locked nor does it provide protection from weather. There is no single cargo carrier that includes very high weight capacity, fully-enclosed weatherproof construction AND the security of being lockable. One item that comes close is the Carpod Walled, Folding Cargo Carrier # M2205-01-02.

The enclosed Rola cargo carrier you referenced, part # 59108 will not fit your hitch, so this is not an option. However, we do offer a similar product that will fit your hitch, Rola part # 59110, that is shown in the linked video. This tilting, lockable, weather-resistant carrier offers a 250-lb weight capacity, 13.5-cubic-feet of internal volume, and includes built-in lights for nighttime safety. You'd just need to have a 4-pole wiring harness on the vehicle to operate the lights - part # 119147KIT. An install video is included for your reference.

Please feel free to let me know your priorities and preferences and I will be glad to narrow down the options for you. In the meantime you can use the link to our main page for Class III 2-inch carriers to view the options available.
