The SkyBox 21 has 21 cu ft of space for sports equipment or camping gear for up to 4 people. The aerodynamic, low-profile design and the dimpled lid with Carbonite texture help to reduce wind noise and drag. The box opens and latches from both sides and is designed to provide clearance when you open your rear hatch. Sliding clamps accommodate most crossbar styles and spreads so you can install the box in minutes without tools. The durable yet lightweight ABS plastic construction prevents warping, denting, or cracking.
The SkyBox lid opens from both sides. Whether you mount it closer to the driver's side or passenger's side of your car, this dual-side opening lets you easily access your cargo. If you are parked on a busy street, in a tight parking lot, or even next to a campground picnic table, you have the option of opening the lid from the side of the vehicle that works best for you.
Patented EndoSkel stiffeners act like ribs to make this lid 3 times stiffer than other Yakima cargo box lids. The fortified lid has an easy-access edge and spring-loaded hinges that allow for smooth, one-handed operation. The extra-stiff lid also helps reduce road noise and vibration, and it guards against dents and scratches when the box is in storage.
The SkyBox has SuperLatch security latches on both sides to ensure that the lid is completely closed. The SuperLatch prevents you from removing the key from the lock unless all 3 internal latches are engaged. That way, you are prevented from removing the key and driving off with an unlocked box. This security system also seals the box against dirt and moisture. Each SuperLatch includes an SKS lock core that can be swapped out to make all your Yakima gear keyed alike.
Universal Clamp-On Mounting Hardware
The SkyBox installs with mounting clamps that slide along tracks in the floor of the box. These clamps fit most crossbar styles, and they adjust for different crossbar spreads. To adjust a clamp, loosen both knobs and slide the clamp to the desired location. Then tighten both knobs and push the cam lever down to close the clamp around your crossbar.
The SkyBox has an undercut tail designed to prevent interference with your vehicle's rear hatch or trunk. This tail provides more space for your hatch to fully open when compared with boxes without the undercut tail.
An integrated track system in the floor of the box provides tie-down points for securing your cargo. These anchor points work great with Yakima's SkyBox cargo net (Y07146 - sold separately).

I got this a month before our trip to be sure I was able to get it (assumed supply chain issues) before the vacation season. I didn’t actually travel with this besides a trip around the neighborhood. I’ll update after my 1k mile road trip in July.
1. Delivery - free! Wow. No where else had free. The box was damaged but the Yakima was fine. Also it came with 2 massive crates which told about a day to burn.
2. Install - so the hooks are tight for the VW OEM roof Rack but I got it to work. I do wish the adjustment screws were a bit longer but it goes on tight and won’t be moving.
3. Fit - I was a bit worried about the tailgate hitting when opening but the mounts are fully adjustable so no issues on my end. It isn’t heavy, but awkward. I did put it on myself but two people would be much easier.
4. Storage - I rigged up some anchors and a ratchet system to hang it on the ceiling of the garage. It’s big but it’s light. Just kinda awkward.
First, I'd like to commend etrailer.com for the efficient, damage-free shipping mode they wisely selected. The carrier contacted me to complete the delivery, and the shipment tracking was very helpful. Second, the sturdy and well-designed Yakima Skybox was easy to install, out of the box to the ATV roof racks, with easy-to-understand instructions resulting in a perfect installation.
Exactly as advertised. Well built. The adjustable clamps were simpler to use than I had expected and make it easy to adjust the position of the box on the vehicle or to move it between vehicles with differently spaced cross bars. I'm very happy with the purchase.
Got for family trips. Fits perfect on my suv. It holds a lot for a road but you can’t overload it or it sages
The Yakima Skybox 21 is a well thought out product. It seems like everything was designed by a clever end user. The cam locking systems that attach it to the rack are genius. There was no pesky aligning with plates or fumbling with special tools. A very straightforward locking mechanism with thumb screws. Also the latches operate smoothly and you can't lock the key in the box because it won't come out when it is open. A feature that I will find handy.
With six people in my family this is going to give us the extra space for cross country skis and a few bags so I can see out the back window.

After a year I still like this product. Its been with us on three Nordic skiing trips, and three camping trips. I did not notice any decrease in gas mileage, it does not affect the cars handling Kia Sedona, and I can get it on my car in less than a minute with my 12 year olds help. If you have a garage, make sure you put your garage door opener IN THE SKYBOX. You may forget what is on top of your vehicle and then you will need another Skybox. I have not done this but I know people who have wrecked a lot of stuff.
After researching several rooftop cargo boxes for family ski and beach trips, I settled on the Yakima Skybox 21. Etrailer.com had the best price and the fastest ship time (approx. 4 weeks). So far after one year of use the box has been a wonderful addition to our family trips. The box attaches to the top of my SUV very easily and can be accomplished in about five minutes once the latches are set to the span of the roof rack bars. The Skybox 21 holds an incredible amount of cargo. I've stored 5 sets of skis, poles, equipment bags and still had room for additional items if needed. I highly recommend the Yakima Skybox 21 and etrailer.com.
Sleek design. Easy to install and take down. My wife and I can install and take it down quickly. Fits much more than expected. Traveled across multiple states twice with it. The box even full didn't effect the way the vehicle drove or performed. Just remember your vehicle is taller with it installed! We had no problems, but you do have to consider that when going into parking garages and lower clearance areas. We're about to travel again and are looking forward to stuffing it full again!
Bought this for a Florida to Michigan trip in the middle of winter. It performed amazingly. Held most of our luggage, opening up space inside the car for the long trip. No leaks and very sturdy for the size. The clamps are great and readjust size easily. I felt comfortable leaving luggage in there overnight during trips. It can technically be handled by one person because its so light but two people make quick work of loading and unloading. Since then, I've used it in multiple trips and love it. Well worth the money in my opinion
The product works excellent. It looks very good on our 2024 Kia Carnival SX! The box arrived with a lot of caved in cardboard but product didn't look damaged but that could just be from the shipping company. Look forward to using it more on our longer trips with enough luggage space for up to 8 people now. Thanks for the excellent Skybox 21.
I absolutely love this skybox. I put a roof rack (just the two rails that go across the short width of the roof) on my Honda Pilot, and this box fits perfectly. The key cannot be removed unless the box is securely fastened, a nice safety feature. Only once was it an inconvenience because of low clearance in a parking garage. It has enough space for all the tent camping gear for a family of 5, and we use it for skis, snowboards, and snowshoes during the winter. I never take it off because we are using it all the time! Additionally, it protected my roof during the last horrible hail storm we had in Colorado. One of the Yakima stickers had melted off during transit, and a second one fell off shortly afterwards (I couldn't have cared less about the stickers, but just in case someone does).
We ordered the 21 Cu Ft Yakima Skybox and couldn't be happier! It gives us lots of extra storage for our long trips, easily connects to our minivan, and etrailer has an excellent price! We had problems with getting it delivered without damage by the freight company, but etrailer was VERY responsive and got a new one out right away. I would highly recommend ordering from them!
Super easy to mount and very secure. I thought it would be more ridged and have a gasket for the top. I'm curious to see what I does to my gas mileage. Probably shouldn't be too bad.
I love the product, it fit on my friend's 2022 Subaru Outback, but on my 2023 Outback I can't open the rear door all the way - it touches the back of the Skybox.
I'll glue some foam padding on the back of the box, but you might want advise 2023 owners of this.
The product was delivered yesterday and although the box was beaten up the Skybox was in perfect shape. The instructions were very easy to follow and in 5 minutes the unit was on my roof racks. The unit is as advertised and is well made. I am looking forward to putting our gear in the skybox instead of in our vehicle. This will keep our gear safe and our vehicle in good shape.
It took awhile to get the skybox in stock but etrailer stayed on top of it and kept me informed every step of the way. I know supply chains are delayed everywhere but they never gave up. Special shout out to Erica at etrailer.
etrailer is great!!! My customer service rep Kearra D is on point. I highly recommend the Yakima sky box 21 it’s HUGE. 2 adults and to kids car camping with lots of gear…… the shipping was not the best but that was the shipping g company. They said that the wouldn’t deliver on my street because it was too small??? Is the same brown truck we all know. They have been here before. Had to drive 45 to the terminal to pick up. etrailer is here at though

Finally after months of backorder, my 21ft cargo box came in. Very good quality and extremely spacious. I have my full-size spare in there with several beach chairs and hiding some Christmas gifts as well.

Adds much needed space for long trips. Excellent construction. Like any other roof top carrier, the gas mileage does decrease but the trade-off is worth it.

We love this roof box. It allows us to put everything we need above and frees up the back seats and cargo area of our Outback for our dogs. The only slight bummer is the rear wagon door on the Outback can’t open completely when the box is installed. Making the box shorter or higher might help but that would take away from its usefulness.
