How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I am very happy with this tongue jack. I took off my old one and installed this in about 10 minutes. It operates so smoothly and is so nice-looking and the handle very comfortable. It will be nice to use a drill on those 96 degree or 10 degree days when I don't feel like hand cranking. And the removable handle will make it easier to open my tailgate. Delivery was quick too.

One year out? Still love it! Functions beautifully and no rust or deterioration. My trailer is outside year round.

by:

SO MUCH BETTER than the factory 2k top wind. The drill option is perfect for me with my back issues. The handle is easy too. I have my 20' trailer loaded with sxs and atv. Ordering through etrailer with Joshua is always easy. Thanks

by:

Very impressed with the JXC trailer jack. It was very easy to install on our trailer.
The best part about it is you have the option of using the hand crank to operate OR the special socket that can be used by a portable electric drill. Makes it so much easier for raising and lowering. The hand crank is easy to use also with the gear ratio that is installed. We replaced an electric jack with the JXC which we had trouble with. Glad we did! Would definitely recommend this trailer jack.

by:

We love this jack! Having the ability to use a drill makes this jack go up and down so much faster then hand cranking and it’s also much faster then any electric jack we have seen while camping. This was one of the best upgrades we made to our camper!

After a year of having this product we still love it! Using the drill adapter saves our battery while dry camping and the ability to move it and up down faster than any electric jack is very handy. Would buy again on any triller in the future.

by:

So far so good. I have not used it much, but really like the feature that allows drill power. I also prefer manual crank as back up (manual crank on electric jacks is a pain). I wish that Trailer Valet JXC extended a bit more, so I am looking at Tongue jack extenders to add on. Also, if you have an older model trailer frame (mine is 1998), you may have to enlarge the lower frame hole in tongue a bit to get this jack to fit through that bottom hole.

by:

I struggled with a decision to purchase an electric version which I originally had. Now I don't have worries of draining the battery, wiring shorts and relying on the battery to lift. Having drill assist with this model clinched the deal. I haven't used it camping yet but did a few test runs with my truck and it works great. I really like the various mounting holes for positioning the crank. I decided to put the crank directly in the front so I can access from either side of the hitch. Fit and finish seems excellent. I think I'll be happy with my decision.

I just commented to my wife on our last camping trip how happy I was to make the decision to purchase this style of hitch jack from Etrailer. Works so well using my cordless drill and also manually. Since I pack the cordless drill in our trailer for using it our stablizer pads I always have it. And it actually seems to raise and lower the hitch faster than a standard electric jack. It was a great choice.

by:

Best purchase for my trailer. I connect and disconnect my trailer many times a day, the crank system on this jack, compared to a top mount crank, is incredibly easy and efficient.
I would highly recommend upgrading to this jack, you’ll love it!

by:

Most convenient and fast jack in the business. Flawless in the year since we have used it. Easy to install. Not sure why this isn’t standard on every trailer. You will not be disappointed!

That's awesome Patrick! It's great to know that this is continuing to satisfy you after a year of use.

Finally got my new Trailer Jack installed, found a great fitment, great quality, absolutely like that I can remove the crank handle to use my cordless impact to raise & lower the Jack! Much rather have this over the electric Jack that stopped working at the most in opportune time.

by:

Works great as advertised with a decent battery powered electric drill. Way better than cranking a manual jack. Install is easy as there is no wiring to deal with. Only a few minor issues. Directions did not include instructions on greasing the jack through its zero fitting. It took quite a lot of grease. Secondly the lift range of this jack was a bit less than the manual jack I replaced. I had to modify the foot for more lift. Also the fitting where you attach the crank tool or drive is proprietary. You can not use a regular hex socket on it. So if you loose the crank or the drill adapter you have to buy a replacement handle or adapter from Trailer Valet. Both are stupidly expensive. Buying both is nearly the cost of the entire jack

by:

The jack works great and flawless. I only wish the drill adapter piece had a way to attach it to the Jack somehow and able to store the handle is using the drill adapter.

by:

Incredibly well built. Trailer is more secure with no handle for crooks to use. So easy to use my drill to raise and lower. Installed it in about 2 minutes! Highly recommend.

by:

Easy to install. Works great with a drill. It makes raising and lowering my 22 foot camping trailer much easier and faster. I already have my drill out to lower the stabilizer jacks. If you are tired of cranking but don't want to buy an electric trailer jack this is a great answer. No wiring required.

by:

The jack works great. No more turning the crank 50-70 times up and down to connect the truck.

Still great. Makes connecting and disconnecting my old travel trailer a snap.

by:

Very easy installation. I have used both methods for raising and lowering the jack and am extremely pleased with the ease of operation.

by:

First off I have to give props to etrailer. They have never let me down and they are my go to. Have ordered many things and not one mess up and the trailer jack is great to. On my set up it took my 16 yr old about 10 minutes to switch out. Brand new trailer so we were working with rusty bolts. I have been using my cordless drill to lift and lower my trailers for years. I normally would just modify the existing jack to work with drill but for the price what the heck. Nice looking has nice size foot. Like the chuck and handle. The only thing that I would change and this has nothing to do with etrailer but the jack itself. I would make where the handle/chuck attaches (nipple) be recessed into the top portion of the unit. This would add a little bit of security (along with coupler lock) to the jack so if the handle is not attached it would not be as easy to put a pipe wrench or jam a socket onto the nipple and lower the tongue on to a receiver. That's just a mod I would make to the jack if I was the manufacturer. Great jack though.

Jack is working working great as it did from day 1. 6 months out of the year that jack is raised and lowered 6 days a week. No complaints yet and dont foresee any either. To follow up on my previous review I havent figured out a way to secure the jack nipple but I have increased the security of the trailer by putting the jack in its lowest position once the coupler lock is installed. Too heavy to pick tongue up by hand and would be cumbersome at best to raise jack leg with a hand tool of some sort and then have to get coupler lock off. Im pretty sure they would move on to and easier target...

by:

Great jack. Very easy to use. Worked well with my heavy trailer.

by:

Yeah the product works flawless. Swapped with the old one in minutes. Glad I did it.

by:

Excellent jack. I’m kind of glad I accidentally broke my original trailer jack. This trailer jack is awesome. Either hand crank or use the adapter with your drill.

by:

This is been a wonderful jack. I dont use the drill attachment but the smooth operation makes this the perfect jack for your trailer!

by: 07/07/2024

replacing the existing crank unit was easy. the problem is that now I will need to carry both my impact gun and (buy) a 1/2 drive cordless drill. why didn't you just make these with a standard socket drive?

by:

Funny thing is I fixed the old one just before this one came in but decided to install it anyways. I am really glad I did....the drill option is totally awesome! The finish on this gives it such a quality feel and look...even the footplate is thicker and has a larger pin that my other one. I really considered electric but since I use a drill for my levelers, this just makes it cool and my drill makes fast work or lowering and raising. While it would be nice if the crank had a 3/4 drive on it, I think it would be difficult to lose the proprietary one that came with it. I put a few rounds of red electrical tape around it to make it easier to see if I drop it in the grass. I like how the crank itself removes so easily too. Really glad I chose this.

Over the past year, we have used the camper well over a dozen times and I have yet to use the crank. My 12 cordless dewalt 18V makes quicks work of lowering and raising. I like that with those off, you get some added security to go along with my ball lock. Would certainly buy this in the future should the need arise.

by:

Good product and installed quickly and I like the fact you can remove the handle. One thing I learned is you will need a good heavy duty drill to use this under any load. While it is great running the jack up or down with no load, once it is under load my drill started to get hot and smoke.

by:

Fit perfectly on my travel trailer. Easy to operate manually or with my 18vokt drill. Nice looking black kindle finish
Definitely a nice addition.

by:

It works well, but be leery of the “Drill Powered Option.” For no apparent reason, the profile of the stem does not match any socket I own, so the user is forced to crank with either of the two sockets they provide, one for hand cranking and one that has to be poorly gripped by a drill collet.
