Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer and today we're taking a look at the TowSmart tow starter package for 2-inch hitches. Now this is gonna come with a 2-inch ball and also have a 2-inch rise or a 3 1/4-inch drop. If you don't regularly tow and you've just picked up a vehicle with a 2-inch hitch, and you wanna tow something like a kayak trailer or even just a, you know, if you're moving and you need to rent a trailer, you can definitely pick this up and it's gonna be a great option because it comes with the 2-inch ball already pre-torqued on there. It also comes with a locking pin and clip here, which is really nice. And that way you can keep this on your vehicle, locked in place, and no one's gonna walk away with it. Now this is rated at 5,000 pounds, which is not a ton of weight, but for something like our Maverick here, as well as a kayak trailer, it's a perfect match and it's gonna be good for most light-duty trailers that you'd be hooking up to.
Being that it's rated at 5,000 pounds, that means the ball mount as well as the ball are rated at that 5,000. But before you just hook up and tow you do wanna check to see what your hitch is rated at, also what the vehicle's rated at, and also the weight of the trailer just to make sure that you're not overloading any of the components. Take the lowest of those numbers, that way you stay safe. Now it does come with the 2-inch ball, but you will wanna check the coupler of the trailer to make sure that it's gonna match up to that 2-inch ball before hooking up. So with the included locking pin and clip here you have two keys.
It's got a nice little rubber cover here that's gonna keep this nice and protected when you're ready to use it. It's not gonna have any road buildup or grime in there. And this just slides in here. We'll twist this and get this off. Now most ball mounts won't come with a pin and clip and 2-inch hitches require a 5/8 pin and clip.
And the fact that you have a locking one included is really a nice benefit not only for your ball mount, but honestly you can use it for any accessory that you may put into your hitch. Now going along with that, the shank that we have here on our ball mount is rather unique. So it's got the XMount, as they call it. And the reason being is it creates a channel for water to get out. So sometimes water can kind of build up in here and when you have a solid square shank, it's gonna sit next to it and sometimes that can cause rust and corrosion.
Well, this allows that to channel out which is a really nice way to do that and just kind of an added benefit. Now going along with that, you also have the ball pre-torqued on here, which is really nice. And this right now is in our 3 1/4-inch drop position which was perfect for our kayak trailer. But you can also use this in a rise position and it's gonna give you a 2-inch rise. Now you will have to re-torque the ball but that's also something that I really like about this brand in particular. The TowSmart has put these channels in here and that way when you put the ball in place, normally you'll have to put a wrench and use your torque wrench to torque this down. Well, these channels hold this in place so all you need is your torque wrench. Makes it just a little bit easier. So if you do have to go into a rise position the way I recommend to swap this out is you can put this in the shank and that way you can just get your torque wrench. Normally you would have that wrench, not the case here. You just loosen that up, flip it over, and then re-torque it down in the rise position and you'll be good to go. Now having that locking pin and clip does mean that you can leave this on the outside of your vehicle year-round. And then the great part is it's got a black powder coat finish, so it's gonna hold up to that road grime. Like right now, we have some salt on the ground because it's winter here. So this being outside, no problem. That's gonna help protect it. You also have a chrome-plated finish on the ball, which is also gonna be nice to hold up to that rust and corrosion. I do recommend greasing it every once and again. And also your pin and clip here that's locking, is also chrome plated, so that's gonna hold up as well, which is pretty cool. Now, just because this has a 2-inch ball doesn't mean that you can't swap this later by picking up a 1 7/8 ball. The main thing that you're gonna wanna do is make sure that the diameter of the shank is gonna be 1 inch. Then you should be able to drop this in, you'll torque it down properly and then you'll be good to go. (tires rumbling) And that was a look at the TowSmart tow starter package.

This convenient starter kit has everything you need to tow minus the hitch. Includes a black powder coated ball mount with a 2" hitch ball and a hitch receiver lock with keys. Channels on the shank expel moisture to prevent seizing in the hitch.I’ve owned it for a year and have used it about 15 times. I have had zero complaints/issues with it!
Great product... bought it in order to tow a drift boat on the Bighorn behind my BMW X3, and it worked great.
It was great that the mount and ball were ready to tow. Very high quality
Nice as described
Excellent buy with hitch lock. Works fine. I really like the way the TowSmart ball mount is manufactured, and the way the base of the ball essentially locks-in on the top side of the ball mount making it easy to tighten the nut without having to hold the ball. Very satisfied.
It will work; The quality is there for what it is. For the price I paid.
Will it break; NO. The welds are good.
Great budget hitch, only gripe is some rough edges, but at this price it’s not a dealbreaker. Locking pin feels sturdy enough, the lock core leaves much to be desired but again for the price you can't complain. only thing I'd upgrade is the locking pin, but this is a great package deal, materials are good and the finish is decent.
Tyra F from etrailer personally called me to inform me I had ordered the incorrect wiring harness and ball mount for the hitch I ordered to go on my 2020 SUV. Tyra helped me order the correct parts while on the phone and also helped me select the best method of shipping for my needs. I’ll definitely recommend eTrailer based solely on their high level of customer service!!
Great service. Many thanks and
Have not used it yet but it feels sold. Weighs about 8 to 10 lbs. The ball is screwed on so tight I can't get it off to flip it over for to use as a rise. Lock works well, smooth action with key
Extremely easy install. I was able to follow the tutorial video and everything fit where it should. Since I have an aftermarket muffler delete I didn't even have to drop the exhaust. My son and I had it done and installed in about 40 minutes.
Quality parts and delivered as expected.
All works well
