Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig XG-12 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they self-tension and self-center as you drive, ensuring a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and recheck their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip. Pull the chain up to the center of the tire and secure it to the red hook that is attached to the tensioning cable.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Drive forward so that the chain can self-tension and self-center, giving you a perfect fit.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

  • Suggested Konig Self-Tensioning Snow Chains for 265/60-18 Tires on 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee
We do indeed offer Konig self-tensioning tire chains for the 265/60-18 tires on a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The owner's manual states that Class S chains should be used, and should only be placed in the rear tires. The part # TH2004705265 chains you'd looked at are classified as Class S, so they'll offer the proper amount of clearance to the wheel well and to the inside of the tire so it won't damage brake or suspension components. The chains are indeed compatible with your 265/60-18 tires. I'll...

  • Low Clearance Tire Chain Recommendation for 2015 BWM X5 xDrive with Tire Size 315/35-20
I found the owners manual of your 2015 BMW X5 XDrive online and found that BMW only recommends you run tire chains on the rear wheels. They also recommend running low clearance chains. So for your tire size of 315/35-20 you'd need the Konig K-Summit chains part # TH02230K66 as these are only chains that will have the needed clearances since they do not drape over the inner sidewall of the tire at all. I attached an install video for these chains for you to check out as well.

They are among the easiest and fastest to install because they self-tension and self-center as you drive. Most folks say that with a little practice, they can install a chain in less than a minute. Konig chains are very high quality. With proper care/usage they are going to last multiple seasons. I...

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for 265/65-17 Tires on a 2021 Toyota Tacoma
The Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains # TC2221 fit 15" - 17" tires so it will fit the stock 245/75-16 tires on a 2021 Toyota Tacoma but since you have the 30.6" diameter 265/65-17 tires you need a different set of tire chains. For your application I recommend going with the Konig Standard Snow Tire Chains XG-12 Pro - Size 265 # th2004705265 because these are Class S rated so they are designed for low clearance situations and they provide a better clearance than the standard-sized chains like...

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for a 2023 Volkswagen Atlas with 255/50R20 Size Tires
Great question! Since the manual for your 2023 Volkswagen Atlas states that you can only install chains on the 245/65R17 tire size you have a limited selection, but we do still have a set of chains that you can use for your larger 255/50R20 tires without damaging anything. Whenever we see instructions like this it's because there is low clearance on the back side of the tire. Standard chains hug the outward and inward sidewalls of the tire and that inward sidewall might be sitting close...

Hey Scott, great question! Unfortunately the rubber tensioners # TCMA2 are going to interfere with the self tensioners on the Konig Tire Chains # th2004705265. These tensioners are best used with chains like the pewag Wide Base Tire Chains # PW94FR which does not have the self tensioning feature built in.
