Rightline Gear Sport on SUV

The Rightline Gear Sport 3 cargo bag holds your gear securely on the roof of your vehicle. It can be mounted on the roof rack, cargo basket, or bare roof of most large SUVs, minivans, or crossovers. This premium, aerodynamic cargo bag is perfect for any camping trip, shopping spree, or family vacation.

PVC Semi-Coated Mesh XT

Closeup of Sport 3 cargo bag material and inner PVC layer

The bag is made of PVC semi-coated polyester mesh XT. The material is treated with WeatherGuard waterproofing and blocks 98 percent of UV rays to help prevent fading. The PVC material is also strengthened with a nylon grid that helps prevent rips and tears. This waterproof fabric stays flexible in hot or cold temperatures so it can be folded for compact storage

Watertight, Double-Sealed Seams

Closeup of Sport 3 cargo bag seam and material

The bag has double-sealed seams to protect your cargo from the elements. The seams are sewn to reinforce the connections and then fused together to create a watertight seal that blocks out rain and snow.

Waterproof Zipper

Diagram of zip right zipper placement on cargo bag

The SZIP zipper is welded onto the surface of the bag and concealed under a layer of waterproof rubber. This gives the zipper more shelter from rain than ordinary under-the-flap zippers. The Zipper also has a waterproof TPU coating. The coating makes the zipper thick and the bond between sides tight. Apply a small amount of the included lubricant to the surface of the zipper to make it slide smoother and easier.

Loaded Pack Right Sport 3 cargo bag unzipped and on top of vehicle

The zipper also runs three-quarters of the way around the roof bag, so you can easily load up the bag or access your gear.

Versatile Mounting Options

Rightline Gear Sport 3 cargo bag tied down to roof rack side rails on top of vehicle

The Sport 3 cargo bag can be attached to a roof rack, factory raised side rails, or a cargo basket with the integrated straps. Simply wrap each strap around a solid anchor point, thread the strap first through the end loop and then through the buckle, and pull it tight.

Rightline Gear Sport 3 clips

To mount the bag on a naked roof, attach the 4 included car clips to the straps and hook them over the door frame weather molding. The hooks have 5/8" openings to fit over the door ledges. Your vehicle's doors should close easily over the hooks to secure them in place.

A roof pad (sold separately) is available to keep the bag from sliding around and to protect the top of your vehicle from scratches.

Locking Options

Zipper in the flap of Pack Right Sport cargo bag

To lock up the bag, run a Rightline Gear locking cable (sold separately) through the cutouts in the zipper pulls. Then, if you want to lock the bag to your roof, run the cable around your roof rack rails.

Purchased this cargo bag on the road and the good folks at etrailer shipped to my hotel with no problems. The product is the perfect match for the Smittybilt Defender roof rack for Jeeps - it fills the dimensions and is 16-18" high providing enough room for a lot of gear. The product write-up is correct - rubberized zipper, fold over top, etc. This is a quality product perfect for the Defender roof rack. Many thanks to Donna at etrailer for her help.

Like it fine . . . . fits like a glove in the Smitty-Bilt roof rack, exactly. Thanks for the folllow-up.

Cargo bag is great!.
Waterproof, durable
with easy set up and take down (as advertised)

PROVIDED TIE-DOWN STRAPS ARE HORRIBLE!!!!

Drove from Houston, TX to Miami, FL.
Stopped in Bonifay FL to rest for the night.
During the 10 hour drive to Bonifay, I had to pull over at least 10 times to adjust and/or tighten the straps. They did not stay tight. Over time they would work themselves loose and start to slap the top of the vehicle.
That night I was going to fold it up pack our luggage in the Tahoe and return the cargo bag as soon as I got back from our vacation.
I was very happy with the cargo BAG so I decided to go to the local WalMart and purchase a few ratchet straps instead.
Once I tied down the cargo bag with the new straps, instantly it felt more secure. I threw the provided straps in the trash.
We didn't have any problems for the rest of the trip to Miami including the 18 hour drive home.
Something needs to be done with the cheap plastic clips on the provided tie-down straps. They do not stay tight. Over time they work themselves loose and start to slap the top of the vehicle.
I knew the load wasn't going to go anywhere so a few times I would just let it slap the top of the truck for miles because I was tired of dealing with it.

I would definitely recommend this product, but If you are going to purchase this product I would suggest you use a couple ratchet straps, it will definitely make your trip a lot less stressful.

First of all, etrailer had a video on this bag with COMPLETELY incorrect information. I specifically purchased it based on their video. The weather strip had to be removed in order for it to keep the hooks from slipping off. Due to this, on our 15 hour drive, the noise was INCREDIBLY loud and annoying. When I contacted them regarding the matter, they said "oh, I do see the video is wrong, but we can't accept a return". HORRIBLE customer service. I have used etrailer for years, but after this incident, never again.

As for the bag, if it mounts correctly, it is a great bag. The size is great and it held 3 suitcases plus a bunch of boxes and some other things. It was easy to load (but you may want to put some lubricant on the zippers as they were a bit hard to move) and easy to get on and off the car.

I contacted the manufacturer and they said the Car Clips will work with your 2014 Hyundai Tucson. The weather stripping does not have to be removed in any Car Clip application. When watching our installation video of the Car Clips, the installer is struggling to keep them in place before shutting the door, see the 12:25 mark on the attached video. I believe this is typical and my suggestion is to keep them loose until you are ready to shut the door, then pull tighter right before the door is to close like the installer does in the video. Unfortunately, because the straps break the seal of the weather stripping there is no way to fully prevent water from dripping inside. The straps are coated to wick water away, but if you are in a hard rain storm for long enough the straps will eventually saturate and water can drip inside the vehicle.

I love my roof top carrier. The product was perfect and fit on top of my van. It held a lot. We had another 4 hours to get to our destination and it started raining. When we arrived at our hotel we unloaded and were very relieved that our belongings were dry. :)
Having the storage bag it came in is also very nice. If we every need to buy another cargo bag we definitely will buy one from etrailer.com.
I had some questions and called customer service and they were excellent. Took my order over the phone and the product shipped fast.

We still love the product! When we travel with the dogs it makes it much comfortable inside the van. I still would recommend your product!

We purchased this product for a family vacation from Michigan to Arkansas. Initially it seemed to be perfect for what we needed. The vehicle used did not have cross bars so we had to bring the straps through the car. We used the product exactly as instructed and put nothing but a 3 suitcases and 2 dufflebags into it. On our way home, we had a rainstorm while at one of our short stops. Because the straps pressed against the seals around the door, our vehicle seats, inside roof and floor were soaked. We proceeded to our overnight location. While unloading, we noticed that our items that were in the product were soaking wet, and had to find a laundromat to wash and dry our clothing. When we removed it from the rooftop, we found that due to the straps rubbing from the wind force, the product had tears in it. At this point, we had to figure out how to fit all of our items into the vehicle which made for a very uncomfortable ride for the remaining several hundred miles home. I would not recommend this product for anybody!

I agree with Sheri. I bought this bag about a year ago to take to Gulf Shores, AL from Southern Indiana, we used it on top of my moms Ford Freestyle and it worked like a charm. About 6 months later I used it on top of my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee to take the same trip and it worked ok on the way down. The straps did rub holes in the bag from the wind, and I bought some duct tape to cover the holes so our luggage would not get wet. I purchased the mat to sit on top of the vehicle also. On the trip back I loaded the same way and we had nothing but trouble from the start. We stopped a couple of times because it kept trying to lift up and I tightened the straps 3 or 4 times and I could not even push the bag up off the vehicle. Once on the road again the straps and buckles broke and my bag went flying down the emergency lane on I-65. Luckily the bag held up enough that the luggage stayed in, even though it was all damaged to some extent. At that point the bag was shredded and I had to try and pack everything in our vehicle, which was a trick in itself. Needless to say Im not a fan. If you decide to go with this bag I would buy heavier duty straps, since apparently these only last for about 1 and 12 trips.

by:

It works. Only complaint is that the zipper is hard to pull, so it's a solid product I recommend. If you are wondering about the size, it is huge. It fits on a newer Honda Civic, but just barely. It is the perfect size for my RAV4.

Still working great! My complaint about the zipper being hard to pull is easily solved with the included lubricant… which I should have applied earlier. Score -1 for stubbornness! Anyway, solid product.

Cargo carrier saved the day. Delivery was fast. Car was not equipped with overhead luggage rack and this fit the bill perfectly. Vacation went on as planned and all items fit comfortably. Waterproofing was also tested and passed despite some torrential downpours along the way. Thank you.

Have used this Rightline Rooftop Cargo Bag once since I bought it, and was completely satisfied with the durability and size. We have a minivan with no rooftop rails and needed extra storage for our family roadtrip. It seemed to be water resistant and did not experience any water damage to our belongings inside. Dimensions are accurate and held one night of camping gear for our family of 5 (i.e. sleeping bags, pillows, cookware, hiking gear, shoes, etc.). There's no need to spend more money on the expensive brand name bags. This did the job and the soft bag (vs. a hard case) fit the odd shapes of camping items. We were concerned that the weight of the packed bag and wind resistance from driving would cause the straps to eventually give way, but not so. We drove approximately 400 miles on highways and rural roads, and the only complaint was the loud floppy noise from the bag in the wind. Otherwise, it functioned as I had hoped and am pleased with my purchase.

by:

This luggage bag far exceeded our expectations. We have been traveling with it for about a year now (including a 3 month journey across the US and through Canada).

It was more than enough to fit everything our family of 5 needed on top of our minivan, and has survived countless storms (both with rain and even hail at times), and has never once lost its waterproof quality. All items put inside stay completely dry! We plan on not only using this luggage bag for as long as we possibly can, but if for some reason it ever does need to be replaced, we will immediately get another one just like it!

I would recommend this to anyone and everyone! One of the best investments I've ever made!

by:

The inaugural trip for the cargo bag was from DFW to Itasca, MN. It held well and kept our gear dry.

Couple things about the product you need to be aware of (and this goes for all roof cargo):
1) Know the weight limit the roof of your vehicle can support. If you exceed it, you *can* have issues. With a cargo bag this big, it's easy to reach that limit.
2) If you have a sunroof -- put some duct tape or something where you _can't_ open it by habit or accident. That will save you some grief.
3) The default tie downs on this bag are adequate, but you need to practice to tie it down, quickly, safely and without flappy noises!

I would buy again.

by:

I highly advise not to purchase this product. We were 60 miles into our trip, and our bag flew off the roof. Thank God there was no one immediately behind us. We did try to strap it back on to the roof before we noticed the rings that the straps go through were plastic. They were all either cracked or gone. We also decided not to run the straps over the back because it had torn while sliding down the highway and the hole was tearing like paper. I do believe this would be a decent product if the rings were metal. After reading other reviews, I see that we are not the first one to lose their bag off the roof. I would definitely recommend the hitch mounted system as you will also save on fuel because of the wind resistance

by:

No complaints. Had 11 hour road trip to gulf shores. Had heavy rain on way down, no leaks. Fits a lot of cargo. With no skid mat sits in place perfectly. Used without crossbars and had no issues running straps through car under doors

by:

Trailer was a great retailer, that is where the positive stops. The Right line cargo system was horrible, the instructions were vague at best. When I got home from my trip, the wind had torn the entire top of the carrier apart. I was supprised I didn't loose any cargo. There was no way that if it would of rained that anything would of been dry. Do not waste your money on this product...cause. it would truly be a waste!

by:

Ordered the RL100S30 at the last minute and customer service was extremely helpful in ensuring everything from the product to the shipping was set up correctly. Package arrived the next day as promised, installed it on 2007 Ford Escape and headed out on our road trip. Here are my 3 observations since using this product:
1. Large capacity - fit a full size suitcase, regular size duffel bag, very large duffel bag, and 2 carry on suitcases with ease.
2. Rained most of the way from TN to FLA and had no issues with any water getting inside and ruining our luggage.
3. Easy setup and tear down. Took about 10 minutes the first time hooking it up and 5 minutes thereafter. 3-5 minute tear down.
Would definitely recommend not only this product, but etrailer as well for their excellent customer service (Kimberly D).

by:

I bought this travel bag last year for a 16 day road trip from Kentucky to Utah. The first day of travel was wet and rainy. Water started to leak in where the straps hook inside the door frames. I stopped and tried to adjust the strap placement and while it helped a little the water continued to drop inside the car.

Later in the trip the coating on the bag started to crack and tear. Maybe it was the 80 mph speed or the dust from Moab desert but now our gear was getting wet every time it rained.

When we got home I noticed that the bag scratched the top of the car even after we purchased the additional mat to help prevent this from happening.

I knew this was a starter bag but I thought it would last more than one trip. I wish I had bought something higher in quality and not have wasted my money.

by:

I was looking for a solution to travel space. In the past there were other roof top carriers that were poorly made and didn't last long, or were hard to store.
This unit is very durable and has held up well in rough weather, and now one year later is continuing to provide the best solution I've found. No leaks, no tears, sturdy. Buy one - you won't regret it.

by:

This bag is amazing. I am a rural Mail carrier and I use this bag when I can't fit all my parcels into my rig. The rough extra 18 cubic feet of space makes a huge difference. Easy to mount, easy to open and close.
The only issue I've come across is the threading where the hooks are, they started unfurling, but some needle work and it's right and right all over again. Great product. Keeps everything very dry in this wet PNW climate.

by:

I think the Cargo Bag and the way its constructed is excellent. The only thing I would suggest to the user is that you mark or label the straps, so they are used in the same position. That way you only need minor adjustment for side to side and front to back. All in all easy to use great product.

by:

I am definitely convinced that this Rooftop Cargo Bag is waterproof. Upon initial inspection the workmanship seems exceptional. If we are not making these in the USA, we should be.
I am traveling soon from Longview, Wa. to Katy, Tx. (about 2500 miles) I will let you know how it holds up

by:

I was very pleased with my purchase of my Righline car top carrier. I used it this past week to haul my corn hole boards to the beach in Florida. The carrier performed well as it turned water through a couple of heavy rain storms and stayed very secure and quiet for the entire trip. The carrier is extremely sturdy as I traveled in the 80 mph range. I would recommend this product very highly

by:

Hauled a ton of stuff in my bag, on top of my Corolla all the way from Florida to Quebec, back in September. My only complaint was the hold down straps funnel rain into the car:-( Soaked me two nights in a row, tying to sleep in the car.

by:

I am very happy with this purchase. I only used it once, on vacation last year, but I intend to use it again when we travel this year. There was a second benefit to having this tote on vacation last year. The place we stayed didn't have a cover over the bike rack area and it rained on one of the days. I used this soft tote as a cover for the bikes and the tie downs allowed me to secure it to the bikes and save them from getting wet. It is very spacious and it stores much easier than a hard roof carrier. Highly recommended.

by:

Worked beautifully. Had one on daughters Toyota RAV4 and one on the trunk of my Honda Accord and hauled her possessions back from Rexburg ID to Colonial Heights VA over 3 days and two flat tires. They held thru wind rain, fog and heat. No content damage. I did a few extra tie-down straps for interstate speed driving security for my own peace of mind. You have an excellent product.

by:

worked great with out a roof rack, on a 2006 chevy Malibu. don't bother with the clips unless you have a roof rack. I wish the straps were longer, if I had packed the bag full would not have had a long enough strap to go all the way around bag and thru car. but a great option for the long haul. drove from Delray Beach to Pittsburgh Pa.

by:

I needed this product to carry four peoples' luggage during a roundtrip drive from Virginia to Florida over New Year. I fit very will in the back of my pickup and held more luggage than I had anticipated. The zippers were a bit stiff, especially in the bitter cold we experienced, but otherwise was great. The straps worked very easily with the tie down points in the bed of the truck but I really didn't need to use them because of the weight of the luggage. For the price and its utility, it was the best product I could imagine. It will certainly be used again in the future and it will be interesting to see how long it holds up.

  • How to Determine Roof Capacity of a Vehicle for Roof Top Cargo Bag
You would need to check the owners manual for your 2015 Forester or with Subaru to determine the roof capacity. I was able to determine that it is 150 lbs as that is listed on page 8-14 of your manual. The Rightline Cargo Bag part # RL100S30 is a very large bag that measures 48" x 40" x 19" which would carry up to 18 cubic feet of cargo. You would want to measure the dimensions of your roof to see if this would be a fit or not. I also recommend a protective pad, # RL100650, to protect...

We do have a large selection of roof baskets available, however none of them are designed to mount directly to fixed mounting points on a vehicle's roof. In order to mount a roof basket on your 2013 Ford Escape, you will need to first install a roof rack system. For a really nice, but economically priced system that is confirmed to fit your Ford Escape, I recommend the Rhino Rack Roof Rack. This system consists of # RRVA137B-2 for the two 54 inch long Square Bars, # RRRLKVA for the 2500...

  • Yakima GetOut Pro Expandable Rooftop Cargo Bag # Y07188 Recommendation for a Rack-Less Roof
The bag that I would recommend for the roof of your vehicle without a functioning roof rack would be the # RL100S30. This bag can mount fit all roof styles, with a roof rack or without and is expandable from 9 to 12 cubic feet depending on what you need.

  • Cargo Bag and Lock Recommendation for a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo
The Thule Interstate Expandable Roof Rack Cargo Bag # TH869 that you referenced is designed to work on most factory and aftermarket roof racks. If you have a factory or aftermarket roof rack this product should work well for you. It is not designed as lockable, but with a couple pad locks from a local home improvement store you could lock the zippers. If you do not have a roof rack at all on your 2000 Isuzu Rodeo you could get a Cargo Bag # RL100S30 as this product is designed to work...

  • Can Rooftop Cargo Bags Be Used For Suitcases
Rooftop cargo bags are great for keeping your cargo dry and clean, including suitcases. I have included a link to all of our cargo bags for you. Dimensions of the bags will be listed on the product page. Some of the bags are designed to be used on a bare roof while others mount to roof racks or baskets. You can use the filters on the page to narrow down the search to the application that is right for you. One of my favorites is the Rightline Sport 3 XL Rooftop Cargo Bag, # RL100S30, which...

  • Recommended Waterproof Roof Bag for Use with Yakima Mega Warrior
There are a few different sizes of the Yakima Mega Warrior, like the # Y07080, which is 52" x 48" wide. For that I recommend the Rightline Gear Sport 3 Rooftop Cargo Bag - Waterproof - 18 cu ft - 48" x 40" x 19" # RL100S30. This bag would work really well on a cargo basket that size and since it's waterproof, you're going to be protecting your luggage from the elements. If you've got a larger Mega Warrior like the # Y07080-82, the Curt Cargo Bag for Roof Basket - Waterproof - 21 Cu Ft...

  • Roof Mount Cargo Bag for a 2006 Dodge Durango with Factory Side Rails
Rightline cargo bag # RL100S30 can be secured to a vehicle's raised side rails or even used on vehicles with a naked roof using the straps to run inside the vehicle or the optional clips, # RL100600. I also recommend using protective pad # RL100650 to protect the vehicle roof and to help keep the bag from sliding back and forth on the roof. Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual and/or Dodge for the roof capacity prior to loading. Using a wheel step such as # HE4040 makes loading...

  • Rooftop Cargo Bag for Use on 2003 Saab 93 with Naked Roof
The Rightline Ace Rooftop Cargo Bag # RL100A20 that you referenced is a great choice for vehicles like the 2003 Saab 93 that do not have roof hardware to secure a cargo bag. This water-resistant unit when loaded measures 44 x 34-inches (and 17-inches tall). The 34-inch width should be fine on this vehicle and a quick check with a measuring tape will give you a good sense of how it will fit. However, I do suggest you consider instead Rightline's weather-proof version, part # RL100S30, which...

  • Choosing Roof Basket Versus Roof Bag on 2018 Subaru Outback
I can understand your confusion. Setting a cargo bag directly on the vehicle roof isn't the greatest idea not only for the reason you mention, which is weight. Having the bag directly in contact with the roof's painted surface isn't a wonderful idea either. While traveling down the road, you're always going to have dirt and grit get on the roof surface between the bag and the roof. This can scratch the paint in a surprisingly short amount of time. The best practice is to use a cargo basket...

  • Can I Attach Extra Large Cargo Carrier # 988501 To Roof Of Vehicle
You would want to use a cargo bag designed to be mounted to the roof of vehicles. The item you selected, Extra Large Cargo Carrier, part # 988501 is not rated or designed for use on top of a vehicle, it is designed to be used on a hitch mounted cargo carrier. For a roof mounted cargo bag, I would recommend the Rightline Gear Cargo Bag, part # RL100S30, which has 18 cubic feet of cargo room. This cargo bag will attach to a roof rack, or can be used on a bare roof by running the straps...

  • Cargo Carrying Options for a 2004 Ford Explorer Rear Wheel Drive with a 4.0 Liter V6
Cargo solutions for your 2004 Ford Explorer will include both hitch-mounted and roof-mounted carriers. Since you will be transporting a combination of hard goods and soft goods you may be able to handle all of your cargo with a combination of one hitch-mounted and one roof-mounted carrier. I can provide you with recommendations for both. You will first want to verify the weight capacities of your hitch receiver and roof. All trailer hitches we offer for your Explorer are 2-inch Class III-rated...

  • Rightline Roof Cargo Bag Recommendation For a 2010 Honda Odyssey With Factory Side Rails
Getting a rooftop cargo bag like the Rightline # RL100S20 that you referenced when traveling 10 hours with three small children is a very good idea. It is nice that you have the side rails on your 2010 Honda Odyssey because you will be able to secure the cargo bag to the rails instead of running them through your vehicle which decreases head room and you will not have to purchase crossbars. Because the cargo bag measures 44 x 36 x 19 inches your pack-n-play will snugly fit inside which...
