Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the Glacier Tire Chain Tensioners for 16-1/2" to 19" Rims

Hi everyone, it's Evangeline here, at trailer. And today, we'll be taking a look at our Glacier chain rubber adjusters, for your Glacier tire chains here, at trailer. So these are the rubber adjusters that are designed for vehicles like, light trucks, SUVs, larger passengers vehicles. They are designed to work with 16 and a half inch to 19 inch wheels or rims. Now, to be honest with you though, I personally think if you do like this style, to get it in a size up, since it kind of runs small, or to get another style of rubber adjuster, like these. Just because they're so much easier to use, since this is a very tight fit.

It does require a little bit of strength to get them around your chains. Now, some people do like this style, so we'll talk about that, just to see if it's the right fit for you. So, this is basically a rubber cord with some hooks. Now, some versions come with five hooks, some versions come with six hooks. It works in the exact same way, no matter how many hooks you do get.

When you do install them, I recommended going up, down, left, and right. That way, it's easily distributed. You also have different options for installing it. You can put the hooks on first and then attach the cord or have it all together. We'll go through that in a little bit, but first we'll take a look at some dimensions.

So, your rubber cord, just in this position, is going to be about 15 inches long. Now, this still has to stretch though, so you do get a slightly smaller diameter. You can see how, if you do have to stretch it, if you get to your larger 19 inch wide or diameter rims, it will be a bit of a stretch. Which is again, why I recommend getting the size up, if you do need to do so. Now as for the metal hook that comes with this kit, measuring inside dimensions, so that's going to be from the top to the bottom, is going to be about an inch and a half inches tall.

And then, when you are using it, make sure that the cord goes inside the smaller loop, right over here. And then your larger hook, is going to go around your tire chain. So this is going to work with cable style, kind of like what we have here, but also the ones that have links, or view bars or square links. You can find the different types of tire chains that this works with on the product page. So we have our hook right there and notice that you can leave your hook on your tire chain, if needed. That way, you just connect to the hook instead of connecting both the hook and the rubber cord. So we have them on tire size, 225/65 R17, right now. And you can see how with our 17 inch rims, it's already a very tight or tension fit. So I know, some people like more tension when it comes to rubber adjusters, and that's definitely what this is going to provide. Now, it's also a lot more low profile than the other style of rubber adjuster. So, that's cool too. If you do like having those hooks, which are separate from the cords, this is the style you would go for. Also, to be honest, it kind of looks better than the multi-arm rubber adjuster, since it's a bit more minimalistic. So, my final thoughts about this rubber tensioner is, it is a struggle to install. Especially if you get the perfect size for your tire, or if you're on the higher spectrum for the range of wheel sizes that it fits. Again, I do recommend, Glacier chains, other type of adjuster. This is the multi-arm adjuster and it's a bit easier to install. I've installed a bunch of tire chains here at trailer, and this is my favorite style. But again, if you do like the look of this rubber adjuster, or you liked the way this works, then hopefully, the dimensions I gave here and how it works, will help you out with making that decision..

Chain TensionersExcellent! Simple and easy to use- makesfiddling with the chains to get perfect tight fit a whole lot easier. Cheap and well worth it
Thanks for the prompt service

Just received my tire chains so I cannot review the product, but the price and service at etrailer was great. Received order much quicker than expected.

by:

Tire Snow Cable AccessoryI purchased two of these accessories for my newly purchased snow cables. These snug the fit right up! Good price and works very well.

by:

No problems here - the product looks good and fit in the tire chain bag. I wanted the chains to be as tight as possible to minimize damage to the car.

by:

We ordered these tensioners with a set of Pewag square link, mud service heavy duty chains appropriately sized for our 315/75R16 tires. Those tires have a tall sidewall and so I opted for the tensioners listed for 16 to 20" wheels. However, with those chains and tall sidewalls of our tires, these tensioners lack sufficient reach to get more than three hooks attached to the chains (photo). If you're planning on using these tensioners on a tire with a tall sidewall and a chain that doesn't extend down the sidewall very far (as ours), I recommend mounting the chains and then measuring the diameter of the circle inside the side chains. Call Etrailer with that measurement and see if they can set you up with a tensioner that will fit.

Our ordering experience with Etrailer was great - prompt shipping and compassionate customer service when I explained the problem mentioned above.

We rarely have snow in TN but this winter is the exception. I live way up on a hill and your chains and adjusters worked perfectly to get me home.

I ordered three sets of chains. One for my van, one for my small truck and one for my big truck. The chains with the cams are very nice and easier to deal with. Don't buy the rubber rings with hooks that is used to keep the chain centered, it is cheap and will not last the winter. Buy the short rubber straps at any hardware, they work perfectly. These are adequate chains for moderate use.

by:

I received my order quickly and will be teaching myself how to install these snow tire chains this evening when I get home. These are the same snow tire chains selling in our area but for a much better price. We are taking a trip up to the mountains this weekend and our area mountains have received hundreds of inches of snow. I wouldn't think of heading up without high quality chains for our car. Thanks so much for the fantastic turn around time I would definitely purchase items from this retailer in the future! Thank you etrailer!

Well, I believe they are still sitting in my garage. We took a trip to the snow last year and the highway required chains. At the last minute we decided to take my husbands truck rather than my passenger vehicle, so we never did have to use them. Hopefully someday, someone will need them and we will be able to use them :- I appreciate the follow up. I remember everything being great with this purchase and I would purchase from you again in the future.

Ordered chains from Mesa, AZ by phone, on Friday. Requested delivery to address in Moab, UT by the next Friday. They arrived early on Wednesday.
Chairs were intended for compliance with Colorado State chain laws. They were not required or used on I-70 on trip to Denver despite snow & ice storm and heavy traffic while crossing the mountains. Traffic was moving way too fast, and travel distances too great, to make speed limiting chains practical.
Back in St. Louis now, but not sure I will ever need them here. I guess I'll keep them just in case we have a hard winter. I may need to find a big parking lot for my first experience using chains. Can't wait.

I have not had the chance to mount the chains and use them. They sit in my car trunk adding weight for better traction on dry roads. If they have function and purpose it could be to keep snow and ice away from St. Louis. I may need to take another winter road trip through the Rockies just to see if these chains really work.

by:

Ordered tire chains and these tightening cables for our new car and our annual round trip between Washington and California. Hope we never have to use them, but i was very pleased with the order process. I entered the make and model of the car and it was as simple as that. I feel confident these will fit the car when we have to use them. The order process was smooth and the company even upgraded us to quicker shipping at no extra cost. The chains were well packaged and arrived in good time. The customer service and contacts were all excellent. I will recommend them to anyone who needs this type product.

I give 5 stars but haven’t used them yet..I live in San Tan Valley AZ and no snow but I will hunt in the mountains and will have the security of having chains and adjusters.

Due to Covid still haven’t used them yet, but they fit perfectly

by:

Simple to attach. Keeps chains centered on wheel, reduces noise, and protects body and brake components from damage caused by slack chains.

There isn't a lot of excitement when it comes to tire chains and adjusters unless it is when you need them and you don't have them, or you have them and they don't fit, or you have them and they don't work. With etrailer I managed to miss ALL the excitement! As always I received excellent sales and shipping service to get me the correct chains and adjusters in time for an unscheduled trip, they fit to a "T", and provided excellent traction with no sidewall wear or impact with body or brake components. I always marvel at finding the best service for truck and trailer equipment half way across the country rather than in my own backyard.

by:

Put these on over the weekend fit purfect .Have a road trip coming up hope we don't need them but we have if we do need them.

by:

Estimated ship time from eTrailer was inaccurate since the product turned out not to be in stock; had to wait an additional week before delivery.

However the chains did fit my 2015 RAM 2500 Power Wagon with stock tires (Duratrac 285/70-17) and wheels. The rear left parking brake cable is VERY close (~1/2 inch) from the chain, so I had to use a zip tie to keep the extra links from slapping against the cable. There was plenty of clearance up front and on the rear right. Glacier rubber adjusters (PW99) are necessary to remove chain slack.

by:

Am reserving a star because I have not yet used the product. It appears to be fine.
Pat C. was very helpful, and responded promptly when I left a question on voicemail.
This is one of the few times I have purchased a product hoping that having it will ensure not needing it. If I never have to install a tire chain I will consider my life a touch richer for having missed the occasion.

They are faithfully sitting on a shelf in my garage waiting for a chance toget wrapped around my tires.I hope I never have to use them. Thanks!

I bought these to use on tire cables/chains for winter. I have installed them to dry fit them on the tire cables/chains. If I lived somewhere that you had to use them a lot I would step up and buy a different style. In my case these will work great.

  • Recommended Snow Tire Chains for 2014 Buick Enclave Tire Size P255/60R19
There are numerous options for tire chains for the 2014 Buick Enclave with 255/60-19 tires. I have included a link to the right with all the options for you. Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual first for any specific requirements or recommendations on the use of chains on your vehicle. Out of the options, if you will not be using chains very often I recommend cables # PW2028C that you referenced. Cables are great for infrequent use.
