Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Feed the cable through the connection loop

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then feed the extra cable through the second loop to keep it from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Optional rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

  • Tire Chains for a 2017 Subaru Forester with 225/60-17 Tires
According to the owner's manual for your 2017 Subaru Forester, "tire chains cannot be used on your vehicle because of the lack of clearance between the tires and vehicle body." However, we certainly understand certain states and conditions require the use of tire chains therefore, the choice is ultimately up to you whether or not you want to use them. If you do decide to use tire chains on your Forester, the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains part # PW1038 would be the correct size for your...

Your 2008 Honda CR-V came with only the 225/65-17 tire option from the manufacturer. These tires are 28.5 inch diameter with 8.9 inch width and 5.8 inch sidewall. The 265/65-17 tires will have a 30.6 inch diameter with a 10.4 inch width and 6.8 inch sidewall. The 205/65-16 tires will require different rims and will have a 26.5 inch diameter with 8.1 inch width and 5.2 inch sidewall. The 225/50-17 tires will have a 25.9 inch diameter with a 8.9 inch width and 4.4 inch sidewall. You...

  • Recommended Tire Chains for 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon
I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2018 Subaru Outback and it does state that the vehicle has very limited wheel well clearance. This means you will want to go with a tire chain set that is Class S compatible, which simply indicates that they are specifically designed for vehicles like yours and will require very little clearance to install. It also states that traction devices should only be used on the front tires. I do recommend checking your copy of...

  • Snow Chain Recommendations for Tire Size 245/60-18
Since I don't know what year Honda CR-V you have I can't look up the owners manual to see what is recommended for tire chains. So what you can do is grab the manual and check out the snow chains section and if there are any restrictions they will be listed. I like to flip to the end of the manual and use the index at the end to find what page that will be on as that seems to be the easiest way. For your tire size of 245/60-18 the option I recommend the highest is the Konig Easy Fit Chains...

  • Can Tire Chains Be Used On a 2015/2016 Subaru Forester or 2017 Subaru Outback?
The Thule Self-Tensioning, Low-Profile Snow Tire Chains, # TH2004205104, will give you enough clearance because they will adjust tension and not just have slack in the chain. If you are concerned about the seeming contradicting information, you could go with a cable chain like Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, # PW1042. With these style chains, spring rollers are wrapped around sturdy wire cross cables. With this product, Rubber Adjusters like # PW100 are recommended. In the Owner's Manual...

Hey Trent, I have a couple options for your 2025 Subaru Forester with tire size 235/50-19. First we do have tire cables like your manual mentions can be used with the part # PW1042. These will work and get you around but they are generally a one-time-use type solution which the price reflects that. Now if you want something that would provide better traction and will last a really long time the best solution is the Konig K-Summit Chains part # TH02230K66. These do not wrap around the inner...

  • Glacier Tire Cables that Fit Tire Size 235/65-16 of Hyundai Santa Fe
The difference between the sizes you mentioned essentially means you'd have a tire and wheel that is 1 inch taller in overall diameter. A lot of times this isn't a problem since you really would only have 1/2 inch less fender well clearance than what you currently have but you should check to make sure. Your speedometer will read slower than you really will be going as well.

I also recommend using these with the Glacier Multi-Arm Tire Chain Tensioners part # PW105 to ensure a tight fit. These will be good options for help with increased traction in both snow and ice. They come with a nice carrying case you can store them in inside the vehicle when not in use as well.

  • Where to Install Tire Cables On 2023 Subaru Outback
I took a look at the owner's manual for your 2023 Subaru Outback and it lists that you cannot use chains, you'll need to use a Class-S device like # PW1046 if you have 225/60-18 tires or # PW1042 if you have 225/65-17 tires instead. It also mentions you'll only want to install these cables on the front tires. Installing cables on the back tires, or chains on the front or back could cause damage that you'd be liable for.

These cable chains are perfect for emergency use, but are not the most durable of choices.
