Will Lippert Pull-Out Steps Work for You?

Pull-out steps are typically installed on travel trailers. The pull-out steps from Lippert are easy to install and fold up underneath the camper for simple storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Lippert Manual Mounting

The Lippert pull-out steps attach the underside of the camper chassis, directly beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available underneath your camper that lines up with the door frame, and measure the width and depth. You will need a mounting space that is at least 25-1/2" wide and 12" deep.

If it turns out you have more or less space beneath your doorway, there are other step assemblies available with bracket sizes ranging from 25-1/2" wide to 28" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

RV Steps Outriggers

Outriggers - metal brackets that act as an extension (LC301704 - sold separately) - may be needed for installation depending on the model of your original stairs. These provide extra length if the old steps are longer or wider than the new.

Once you know where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, that spot will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Lippert Manual Entry Height

To determine how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, plus 6" to 9" to account for the drop from the bottom step to the ground. This measurement will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays entry height measurements in the first column. If you determined you need a 25-1/2" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 25-3/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. The steps for 27-1/2" mounting bracket widths are in the fourth column, and the steps for 28" mounting bracket widths are in the fifth column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

To install the steps:

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Lift the steps into the mounting space and prop into place
  3. If needed, mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill

    -Set aside steps before drilling

  4. If needed, install the outriggers
  5. Align step mounting holes and secure in place with bolts and flange lock nuts

-Make sure the bracket is backed up fully against the I-beam on the chassis

    -Hardware not included

  6. Tighten hardware until snug
  7. Make sure assembly is sitting square and level
  8. Torque the hardware to 20 ft-lbs

  • Can 2-Step Lippert Steps Replace a Single Step on a 2017 Winnie 170S
You will need to go by the dimensions of steps # LC432682 to determine if they will fit your 2017 Winnie 170S. I have included some pictures showing various measurements to help you. The depth when folded up is going to be 13 inches. By the looks of your current set up there is enough space for these steps.

  • Is there a 2-Step Version of the Lippert Tread Lite Manual Pull Out Step for RVs?
Hey Julie, you are correct a 2-step version of the Lippert item # LC432696 does exist. However, the 2-Step Lippert Tread Lite Manual Pull Out Step for RVs LC333969 is no longer available. We have not had them since 2017. The alternative we have is the Lippert Manual Pull-Out Step for RVs item # LC432682. It works with entry heights that are 21-1/2" - 24-1/2". The brackets measure 25-1/2" wide x 9-3/4" tall x 12" deep. What kind of trailer do you have?

  • Replacement Steps and Wheel Center Cap Plug For a 2023 Forest River R-Pod 171
I really wish I had a way to see exactly what parts are installed on your 2023 Forest River R-Pod 171 but Forest River does not make the information public. Based on images of your camper it appears to have steps like the Lippert # LC432682 and I believe the Center Cap Plug # AM90081. If you can take some pictures and measurements for what you have I can verify if these are the correct parts or you will need something different.

Hey Thad, We currently only offer the Lippert Thin Shade # LC786037, which sits inside of an entry door window. You can honestly just use blinds from your local hardware or department store. You'll just want to ensure they have the hold down brackets, like part # 37281635, that you can pop the bottom rail into so it doesn't flop around while the trailer is moving.

I have a solution to help you install your Lippert Manual Double Step # LC432682. While your gusset plate idea would work, if you are concerned with stability I recommend using the Lippert Outriggers # LC301704 to help you mount the steps to your motorhome. The outriggers attach to the steps and the frame of your motorhome; mounting hardware # LC118155-72 will give you the correct bolts for assembly.

The only brackets we currently offer for RV steps are the Lippert Outriggers for Manual RV Steps # LC301704, which would mount directly to the frame of the trailer.
