Hey everybody, how's it going Today we're gonna be going over and showing you how to install the replacement shock absorber here for a Lippert Trailair and CURT Flex Air fifth-wheel pin boxes. So in regards to compatibility, this shock here actually works here with a couple of different pin box models. Whether you have the Ultra-Fab, Flex Air, you have any of the Trailair, Air Ride pin boxes or you have the CURT Flex Air, this shock here is gonna be an exact fit replacement. Now, this is an exact OEM-direct fit replacement part. This isn't made by another manufacturer. This is made directly by the manufacturer, the pin box.
So, it's gonna be an exact bolt-on fit and it's gonna be the same quality as the pin box that we have here. So Lippert actually changed the design of this shock absorber here on their older models that we're branded under Trailair. They used a sticker that had the fill line in there, but the problem was that, is that sticker over time would wear off and it'd eventually work itself loose from the shock absorber. Therefore, we'd lose that mark that we need to inflate our air bag too. Well, they've actually redesigned the shock absorber to now it's actually etched into the inner tube here.
You can see the "Inflate to this line." There's an arrow, and then we have our line up here. So it's actually etched into the shock absorber now so you don't have to worry about that sticker falling off. So the missing sticker is one reason you would wanna replace your shock absorber. Another one is if the shock absorber is worn out, because these do fail over time, depending on how hard we're using them or how long they've been installed. Now, we're kind of playing this by feel in regards to how to tell if the shock absorber is bad.
Basically, if you experience excess bouncing here with your pin box here, that means the shock absorber is not returning to the normal position, and therefore that would indicate it's faulty. And if we also take it off and just sort of play with it by hand, it should be pretty easy to compress and retract by hand, that would indicate its faulty. This one takes a lot of force. Almost as much as I'm able to give it in order to compress and retract it. So that would indicate that this is working correctly, but if it moved really easily by hand, that would indicate it's faulty and would need to be replaced.
So a lot of it's just playing with it by feel, sort of feeling how the trailer rides as it was new and replacing it based on those criteria. So the first step of our installation, we do need to make sure we release all the air pressure from our airbag. And then we're gonna come up top here with a 3/4 inch socket and wrench and begin by removing this top bolt here. So, now we're gonna slide the bolt out. Now there's a little bit of tension on that bolt now. So what I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna sort of press up on the bottom of the pin box a little bit, should give us enough leverage to pull the bolt out like so, and then our shock absorber should just tilt down. Now we use that same combination of our 3/4 inch socket and wrench and we'll remove that bolt on the bottom as well. Go ahead and slide our bolt out, and our shock should come out next. Next, we're gonna take our shock assembly here. We wanna make sure that this decal here with our inflation line is facing out away from the pin box. We also want to ensure that the outer sleeve is gonna be attached at the top here. The inner sleeve is gonna go towards the bottom. So we'll go ahead and set it into position now. We'll take our factory hardware here, our factory bolts that we removed. I'll go ahead and thread that on, just loosely thread that, and then I'm going to line up the one on the top. So in order to do that, we're again gonna have to lift up from the bottom of the pin box. It doesn't take a lot of force. Get our bolt started there. Once we have that through, we'll install our nyloc nut. And then we'll come back with our 3/4 inch wrench and socket and tighten those down. Now there isn't actually a torque spec provided with these. The manufacturer does not specify, so we're just gonna be doing it by feel. With the nyloc nut, as soon as you get the nylon through the threaded nut there, that's gonna serve its purpose there. You don't have to worry about it backing out. You don't wanna get it too tight, but again we're just gonna be doing most of this by feel. You can sort of gauge how much pressure it took to release that nut. That's about how much we're gonna tighten it. Unfortunately, we just don't have exact torque specifications, so we do need to do this by feel, and use our best judgment. So now, once we have both of those bolts tightened down, that's gonna do it today, for our look at the replacement air shock, for our Lippert Trailair and CURT Flex Air fifth-wheel pin boxes..

Fits my pin box and cushions the ride of both the camper and my truck. The markings on the outside indicating how much air is to be put in the bladder were wrong but etrailer gave me a pressure range to go by and it works well.
There was no hardware to replace the shock, after being told there would be.

It looks like this requires you to use your factory hardware. I am sorry for the misinformation.
Decal a little buggered up so I made my own out of reflective tape.
Did not receive the shock, receive the other two parts. Only valve stem, and air spring was in the box
Perfect replacement shock absorber for the Flexair hitch on our Redwood fifth wheel. We had a mishap that left the original with a bent case and it was difficult to set the pressure in the air bags as it would often stick. Simple to install and has my has my hitch back to proper operation. Ordering process was easy, part arrived on time in perfect condition.

Working fine, a great upgrade.
I ordered replacement shocks for my trailair hitch. they arrived on the promised delivery date and were identical to the OEM shocks. The ride of the trailer improved, the old shocks were 10 years old.

I bought 2 new shocks for my trailair fifth wheel hitch a d they are working out very well.

I chose Etrailer parts because they had a good selection of high quality replacement parts for my AirRide 5th wheel hitch (and everything else I need for my truck and trailers). My original equipment was very old, and I expected it to be impossible to find a replacement that fit, but George at Etrailer had them NEW. I installed the parts a year ago and I have been very happy. The quality is clear after a year of hard use--the parts still look and perform like new (better than the rest of the trailer!). The pictures show it ... the shock absorber and air bladder and steel yellow valve stem still in top shape with almost a thousand miles on them. So glad I have Etrailer a try!

Replacement part that works fine.
Easy to replace, and made a huge difference on the comfort of the ride in my truck. Noticed that I needed a new one when it took extra air pressure in the air bag to raise the shock to the proper height. Wish I had noticed that earlier. Well worth replacing, and the service from etrailer has always been top notch. Got a B&W fifth wheel hitch earlier, and that is completely amazing!! Worth every penny!
The shock was a Lippert componentfrom what I could tell, at a good price and etrailer's better than average delivery. Added it to our DRV Mobile Suites 36' system to help soften the Pinbox recoil of the airspring going over rough bridge transitions.

I have not had a chance to install my new shock absorber. After I have installed it and tested it, i will write a better review. I was very happy with the order process and the delivery.

The visual appearance was not what I was expecting. The paint was very scuffed as shown in the pictures. It appears to have been in your inventory for a long time an potentially handled roughly.
Hopefully it will be functionally fine.

Needs to have the full pressure marking like the original shock has. Would make it much easier to know when you are getting the proper amount of air in the bladder.
I replaced the shock on my Flex Aire pin box that had been damaged due errant parking. It was a diprect replacement first all, two day shipment, simple, easy to install and I feel confident of the future performance. This a great set up too, smooth riding all the way.
The shock works great, but the arrow etched into it appears to be a different size than my original one and therefore inflates the bag way too much to even come close to the top of the arrow.
I have since just put a new mark according to my original shock arrow and inflate to this new line
