Save Time and Money

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.

Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.

The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.

This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.


In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.

Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.


Determining the Bolt Pattern

If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.

For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.

And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 13 inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly set. This is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes, so that you can take advantage of the superior performance that comes along with having disc brakes on your trailer. Having the two brake assemblies here is going to allow you to upgrade a single 7,200 pound capacity axle with the number 42 spindles. Our rotors are 13 inches in diameter, and you can see we've got the eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern with these nine and 16th inch diameter wheel bolts. So these are going to work for your wheels that are 16 inches and larger.

Our hub and rotors, as well as our calipers and our mounting brackets are all e-coated, so they are gonna resist rust and corrosion with a 250 to 350 hour salt spray rating. So these are gonna provide adequate rust protection for your camper, car hauler, or utility type trailers. If you're looking to upgrade to disc brakes on like a boat trailer that's gonna be in salt water, or a trailer that's gonna be on heavily treated roads, I would recommend decrement finish or a stainless steel construction; those are gonna hold up a little bit better in those really corrosive environments. But if your trailer's not gonna be in those sort of environments, these are gonna hold up really well for you and do a good job, and they are gonna provide superior performance over your drum brakes. So you're gonna notice a drastically shortened stopping distance, so it's gonna provide smoother more control braking, helps to keep your trailer from pushing and pulling.

It's got these ceramic brake pads that help to increase your stopping power, and you can't see it but there is a large two and a half inch diameter stainless steel piston here that provides fast, responsive braking for you. So definitely gonna be a noticeable improvement over your drum brakes. And in addition to better performance, they're also going to be less maintenance, so it's gonna help save you time and money. Having the one piece hub and rotor assembly is gonna reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear, it's got the vented design here on the side so that's gonna help dissipate heat faster and prevent premature brake pad wear. And these are a nice high quality automotive grade construction, so they are gonna be very long lasting for you.

Now I do want to note that disc brakes do require a higher line pressure than your standard drum brakes, so you are going to need a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for 1500 PSI or higher, in order to activate your brakes properly. And that's kind of uncommon for your trailers that are set up for drum brakes, and so you will probably have to purchase those separately, we do have them available here at etrailer.com, so make sure that you have everything that you need. So this kit isn't going to include those components, but it is going to give you the two e-coated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies, with the eight nine 16th inch pre-installed wheel bolts on each one, as well as 16 of these nine 16th inch zinc plated steel lug nuts. We're also going to get the two e-coated cast iron calipers, and the two e-coated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets. And you can see these do have the four hole brake flange configuration, that's going to provide easy mounting onto your axles.

These are going to be mounted on the side so I've got them displayed here on the top just for balance, but when you go to install them they're gonna be on the side. And that side support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on your bolts, so it's gonna help your bolts last longer. But you are going to get four of these stainless steel caliper mounting bolts, as well. In addition to all of that, you've got your inner and outer races that are pre-installed already. You're gonna have your inner and outer bearings that come with this, and this is a grease lubricated system, so you're going to have your two grease seals for the inside, and then your two grease caps for the outside here, to make sure that everything stays in there, keeps out contaminants, and that sort of thing. So overall, really great improvement over your drum brakes. If you are wanting to upgrade to disc brakes this is gonna be a great way to go for you, especially for those of you who, your trailers only gonna be used a few times a year, it's not gonna be taken out, those really salty environments, this will hold up really well for you.     Thanks for reaching out! You can definitely use the Kodiak Disc Brakes # KOD88FR for your tandem axle construction trailer. This does use oil as a lubricant so you'll want to be sure to clean off all of the grease from your spindles to make sure the oil is able to work effectively. Most 16" wheels are compatible with 1/2" and 9/16" lugs so I'd be surprised if your current wheels don't work with the larger lug size. The E-Coat will work just fine for your application as it's an industry...
