Get a Safer, More Comfortable Ride

Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.

Save Time and Money

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.

diagram comparing the number of parts in drum brakes and disc brakes

Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.

The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.

close up view of vented rotor

This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.

In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.

mounting bracket supporting disc brake

Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.

diagram showing how to measure even bolt pattern

For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.

diagram showing how to measure odd bolt pattern

And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Video Transcript for Checking Out the Kodiak Disc Brakes-KOD28FR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 13 inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly set. This is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes so that you can take advantage of the superior performance that comes along with having disc brakes on your trailer. Having the two brake assemblies here is going to allow you to upgrade a single 7,200 pound capacity axle with the number 42 spindles. It's got 13 inch rotor diameter here, and you can see we've got eight of these 9/16 inch diameter wheel bolts in the eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern. So these are gonna work for your wheels that are 16 inches and larger.

Our hub and rotors, as well as our calipers and our caliper mounting brackets are all E-coated so they are gonna resist rust and corrosion with a 250 to 350 hour salt spray rating. So these are gonna provide adequate rust protection for your campers, car haulers, or utility trailers. If you're looking to upgrade to disc brakes for a boat trailer that's gonna be in saltwater or trailers that are often on heavily treated roads where there's gonna be a lot of interaction with salt I would recommend going more with a decrement finish or a stainless steel construction. Those are gonna hold up a little bit better in those kind of corrosive environments. But if your trailer's not gonna be in those kind of environments, these are gonna do just fine for you and you won't have to worry about it.

So in addition to holding up well, these are gonna provide better performance. So over your drum brakes, these are going to provide a dramatically shortened stopping distance. It's going to provide smoother, more controlled braking to help keep your trailer from pushing and pulling. They've got the ceramic brake pads here that help to increase the stopping power and you can't see it, but there is a large two and a half inch diameter stainless steel piston that provides fast responsive braking for you, so it is gonna be major improvement over your drum brakes. And in addition to better performance, these are also going to require less maintenance, so it is gonna help save you time and money.

Having the one piece hub and rotor assembly is going to reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. Having the vented design here on the side is gonna help dissipate heat faster to prevent premature brake pad wear. And these are gonna be a nice high-quality automotive grade construction so they are gonna last a nice long time for you. Now the one caveat with upgrading to disc brakes is that they do require a higher line pressure than your drum brakes, so you're gonna need to make sure that you've got a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for 1,500 psi or higher, and that's kind of rare for trailers that are set up for drum brakes. So it might be a little bit for you to get that switched out.

We do have those. We sell them separately here at etrailer.com. So if you don't already have them you can pick those up here. Obviously this kit isn't going to include those so it's not gonna be everything that you need, but it is going to include these two E-coated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies with the eight pre-installed 9/16th inch diameter wheel bolts on each. We're also going to get these 16 9/16th inch zinc plated steel lug nuts, as well as the two E-coated cast iron calibers. Also gonna have the two E-coated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets with the four bolt brake flange configuration so it's gonna be very easy to get these mounted on your axle. Now I do wanna point out that I've got these displayed on top here just for balance, but when you go to install them they're actually gonna be mounted on the side, and having that side support design puts all the weight on the mounting bracket itself instead of on the bolts, so it's gonna help your bolts last longer for you. You are gonna get four of these stainless steel caliper mounting bolts. We're also going to have our inner and our outer races that are pre-installed here. Inside those races, we'll have our inner and outer bearings to make sure that everything's spinning properly, nice and smooth rotation. This system is lubricated with oil, so we've got our oil seals for the inside, our oil caps here for the outside, and we're also going to get one eight ounce bottle of synthetic bearing oil making sure that everything stays lubricated and running smoothly. So if you are looking to upgrade your trailer from those drum breaks to disc brakes, or if you're wanting to replace disc brakes that you already have, this is gonna be a great set for you. Like I said, especially for those of you who aren't gonna be in super corrosive environments, these are gonna do a great job. That completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

  • Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit for 2020 Grand Design Solitude 310GKR
Hey Nick, so your life will be easier if you stick with a disc brake setup that allows you to keep your current wheel stud size since that wouldn't require you to get new wheels. So if you are sure you have 9/16 inch wheel studs the part # HSE7K-T1 would not be the kit to go with. So instead you would want to go with the part # CAR-HBA16-2 which covers the actuator and the lines and electrical parts and then for hub/drum the part # KOD28FR for each axle.
