Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire

Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Kenda Carrier ST 235 80 R16 radial trailer tire in a load range E. Now this is an ST tire, which stands for a special trailer tire. It has a sturdy sidewall so it can handle heavy loads and it is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on other vehicles.

The Kenda Carrier Special Trailer Radial Tire has the double steel belts and the full nylon plies to combine for superior function and long life. The tread on it is a silica-infuse tread, and they do have, if you look at the tread blocks, they'll have openings and cuts in them. Those are sites which will help reduce hydroplaning, also gives you excellent handling off-pavement situations. The ST Tire does meet the DOT Department of Transportation specifications. Now, the wheel size that this tire will fit on would be a 16 by six inch wide, 16 by 6 1/2, and a 16 by seven inch wheel.

Now a trailer tire should always be mounted on the narrowest wheel that's available. The tire size, which will be stamped on the sidewall, ST for special trailer, 235 80 R16. The R means it's a radial tire. Section width on this, 9.2 inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 30.7.

This tire is a load range E, which means it's a 10 ply rated tire, has a maximum load capacity of 3,500 pounds at 90 PSI, and this tire does come with a speed rating on it and they stamp that on the side wall by a letter designation. And where you'll find that is right after the size we went over. You'll see two numbers for the load index and then the letter M. Speed rating M will mean this has an 81 mile per hour speed rating. That's gonna do it for a look at this Kenda Carrier ST 235 80 R16 radial trailer tire in a load range E.

In our fast paced world where customer service seems to be a thing of the past, I am always amazed when shopping on etrailer. Prompt service, fast shipping and people who actually follow-up to ensure that you are satisfied!

This should be your one stop location for trailer parts.

I pull my boat on interstate to most my fishing locations on average I was changing the bias tire I was using every 2500 to 3000 miles. Sine installing the kenda radial I have pulled boat to Pennsylvania and back over a thousand miles and tires still look new. More than pleased

by:

Im.a bit disappointed. Ive bought from.e trailer many times over the years. I just recieved my trailer tires only to find a date code of ( 1021 ) meaning they are 3 1/2 years old ! An article on your site says they should be replaced every 3-6 years.. So i guess i need to start looking to replace them even thpugh I havent mounted them yet! Certainly makes me think twice about buying them again from here.

by:

Perfect match to what I had originally. Got it mounted this morning and back on the trailer. Ready for the next adventure.
Thanks again etrailer.com. And a shout out to Justin for being helpful on all my orders. etrailer.com is my go-to for all of my trailer needs.

by:

I actually bought 3 of theses and wheels for an overlanding trailer I built from a CE Smith boat trailer and other parts I bought from etrailer. I am happy with these tires and wheels as well as the trailer and other parts.

by:

Not much to say. Bought for a spare and haven’t used it. Just what I thought it would be. Bought to match the original tires

by:

Exactly what I needed to match existing tires

by:

I love doing business with e trailer . Customer service is exceptional. Eric is a top notch 5 star customer service representative!

by:

Love etrailer and the Karrier tires they sell. I put a lot of miles on my fishing boat and I only trust the best to get me to my next fishing adventure. Extremely easy and fast delivery!

by:

After some research, I decided to buy these tires for my boat trailer. I had them mounted and balanced. So far, I’m very pleased. Pulls straight and smooth and handles interstate speeds well. No visible signs of problems. I check the pressures regularly. My neighbor bought the same tires based on my experience. I’d buy these again.

by:

Fast, speedy delivery of a set of tires. Customer service staff is outstanding with answers to questions within minutes. Thank you all.

by:

The tires look good but haven't been driven on yet. I'm not sure this is the place to raise this concern but shipping packaging needs to be improved. 4 tires ordered and boxed 2 per box Both boxes were open when delivered even though they were stapled close. I guess I'm lucky I received all 4 tires. It could of been due to the carrier's handling practices. The carrier was UPS. etrailer may want to look at Tire Rack's packaging for shipping. Seems to work better plus no cardboard to recycle.

by:

These tires are holding up very well , I haul a 1300 lb Lincoln SA200 welding machine on a small 8 ft trailer and these tires dont even squish

by:

These are the best trailer tires i've found. They have the E load range rating, the highest I've found. I use them on a two wheel dolly pulled behind my motorhome. They take a really beating on the road. The first set that I used had about 11,000 miles on them and may have had more life left but I'm planning a long trip this fall and don't want to take a chance on a blowout as they wear down.
I recommend them for trailer tires.

by:

The experience of ordering my trailer tires online from etrailer.com was excellent. They kept me completely updated on the order and shipping status.i had the tires installed on Saturday and only had to drive about 18 miles back to my campsite. I am a camp host at Deschutes Rec Area State Park in Oregon and won't be moving till the 1st of September. Having read reviews about the tires before purchase, I expect them to handle very well.

by:

I've been running these Karrie radials on my tri-axle trailer, which holds a 17,000lb boat since 2016. Overall I'm satisfied. They are a smooth pulling over the road tire. I have had one let go while towing. But overall, they have been good.

by:

After a few trips and several hundred miles, I am quite happy with these tires. Traveling at highway speeds, up to 70mph for more than an hour, the tires never got warm. Stored outside with no ground contact over NE Ohio winter and only lost a couple pounds of pressure.

by:

This trailer tire has seen 3500 highway miles at high speeds with an approximately 1800 pound load (trailer and Goldwing motorcycle). The tire is quiet and tracks well. The tread wear is very slight and even. There are no chunks missing from the tread pattern like I've seen with other trailer tires that take the kind of abuse I put them through. Absolutely no signs of weather checking on the sidewalls. Periodic tire re-inflation frequency is perfectly acceptable. All tires need occasional refilling. This tire scarcely looses 5 - 8 PSI over a period of a year.

by:

I needed a tire that could carry more than 2000 pounds (per tire). There are very few trailer tires that do that. This ST 205/75R14 had specification that is geared towards strength - side walls and load.
Being able to ship to my tire mounting shop was a benefit also.

I have used the load range E tire of this make and model on my 10,000 GVW equipment trailer. Another cheaper brand had various problems, including sidewall bubbles, tread separation, and rapid wear. In contrast, I have had no issues at all with the Kendra Karrier tires. I expect these load range D tires will perform equally well on my 31 ft Airstream trailer, which has a much lighter GVW and specifies only load range C. The Airstream had been sitting unused for at least 15 years. The tires had few miles use, but sat uninflated and partially squashed for at least a decade. I inflated the old tires, but by the time I finished with the 4th tire, the first one had lost half its pressure. The others leaked, too, so I could see that new tires were needed just to move the trailer to my place. I did some research on line, but again ended up choosing this tire because of my experience with the brand and model. The price is quite reasonable considering the durability. (Those cheap tires actually cost me a lot in lost time, not to mention the risk of having a flat with my expensive equipment loaded.) The tires came exactly 1/2 hour late, but on the day originally planned. I took the wheels to my local shop, where they disposed of the old tires and mounted the new ones, with new valves, for $20 per tire. Obviously, I would buy this brand again.

by:

I put a set of four on our camper a few years ago. We've made a number of local and longer trips. I've been pleased with them. They've shown good tread life so far. Unfortunately a piece of road construction debri wiped out one of them on our last outing.

I've been happy with etrailer.com. They've had what I wanted, when I wanted, at a competitive price, quick shipping at reasonable cost and great communication along the way.

by:

Needed a replacement tire for my trailer. Placed an order with etrailer late in the evening. The item was picked from stock and shipped early the next morning and received within a few days. It’s now installed on my trailer. Thanks guys.

by:

Very fast shipping. The tires are excellent quality and big upgrade from the load range B bias ply I had previously.
