Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Aluminum Wheel Feature Review

Hi everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look together at this Kenda carrier ST 205/75 R 15 load range C radial trailer tire with 15 inch aluminum wheel, with a five on four and a half inch bolt pattern. This tire and wheel assembly is going to be great for your boat trailers, stock trailers, utility trailers and campers. This special trailer tire or ST tire has sturdy sidewalls so it can handle heavy loads and this is created specifically for trailers and not intended for use on other vehicles. Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway and this radial tire is constructed with double steel belts and full nylon ply that combine for superior function and long tire life.

The computer generated tread design and premium rubber compound materials are gonna give you superior traction in wet or dry conditions. Now as I mentioned at the beginning of our time together and as we have stamped here on our tire, this is an ST 205/75 R 15. The section width of this tire is 8 inches and the outer diameter is 27.3 inches. This is a load range C tire, meaning it has a six ply rating. The maximum load is 1,820 pounds at 50 PSI.

And this has a speed rating of M, indicating a maximum speed of 81 miles per hour. Now this matte black aluminum wheel is durable. It's going to be lightweight, it is rust proof, and this open spoke design is unique and appealing and it features a clear coat finish on the front and the back, which will protect this wheel from scuffs and scratches. And the dimensions of our wheel measuring bead seat to bead seat, we're sitting at 15 inches in diameter and the wheel is 5 inches wide, and our bolt pattern is 5 on 4.5 inches. And in case you don't know, the first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes and the second number is the diameter in inches of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

So to determine the bolt circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes as we have here, you're simply going to measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. The wheel capacity is 2,200 pounds. The wheel stud size is .5 inch by 20. The center cap is sold separately, but if you pick one up, you just wanna make sure that it fits the pilot diameter of 3.19 inches. This tire and wheel assembly does meet the Department of Transportation specifications and I think that's gonna wrap up our brief look today.

I do hope that our time together has been helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.

Swapped out the steelies and low speed tires the trailer came with for the lighter aluminum wheels with higher speed tires. They tow great behind the sidecar and look a treat.

by:

The description and videos made it really easy to trust what you were purchasing. Shipping was free and arrived in good order. The wheels are much nicer than I even anticipated. These were purchased not only for the tires, but also an upgraded from the stock wheels on my boat trailer.

by:

Very good customer service. The tires and mounting was spot on. Only small complaint would be the center cup insert does not lock in place. It will flop around a small amount. Easy solution is to put a small amount of clear silicone adhesive around the the cup and press the cup in place. Otherwise so far zero issues and the tires appear to be wearing well and have good side traction for our heavy 5th wheel in the rain. Highly recommend this combo. They look great on an older trailer.

by:

A little disappointed with the delivery as the tires were delivered by USPS 1 day late but not the end of the world. Overall very pleased with the initial look of the wheels however very disappointed with the age of the tires from week 25 of 2022 versus it currently being June of 2024 meaning of the 5 year manufacturer warranty advertised on e-trailer I only get 3 years as the manufacturer warranty as the date goes from the DOT date stamped on the tire. Only 64 percent of the warranty is still left... I understand the tires being 6 months or even as much as a year old but nearly 2 years old is excessive.

by:

Really happy with my tire/wheel package upgrade. Replaced the factory grey spokes and tires from 2007 when the original tires finally failed. The wheels were covered in rust from the salt up here. Only towed the trailer about 100 miles since the install but it tows soooooo smooth and looks pretty dang good.
I inadvertently stepped up an inch in tire size when I got the 15” wheels up from the factory 14” because “I know what I’m doing” but the clearance doesn’t seem to be an issue thankfully.
I thought it was just a bigger wheel. Lol

by:

Wheels/tires set are as advertised and shipped in reasonable time. Good quality.

by:

This fit very well and nicely costumer from Maxx trailer repair in Cabazon ca was very happy here is some photos of the boat trailer

by:

Just received 2 of them today and they look great especially for the price. They should be a nice upgrade to the factory rims and tires on my double jetski trailer

by:

Had a delay on receiving the right order, pulled wrong in shipping. I called e-trailer that afternoon and found a fantastic customer service rep named Virginia answering the phone. She handled the mix up with ease, placed a correct order while I was on the phone with her, and I received the tires/wheel combo within a few days. Mix ups happen in this ol world but it's the undervalued customer service reps who make a bad situation pleasant with outstanding old fashioned customer service! Thank you, Virginia & e-trailer for your service. The product quality? Aluminum upgrade wheels with Kendra 8 ply radials scheduled for our vessel later this week will surely add piece of mind on our travels to the coast with a little style to boot. Respectfully, Clayton ...Lake Wales, Florida

Tires have lasted well. Wheel is excellent quality and thick aluminum. I bought them for weight savings but later found that they only spec out at like 1/3 of arrival pound lighter than steel, so I'd rather have saved the money and been able to use hammer on wheel weights with steel wheels, BUT they do look great and are straight.

by:

Perfect fit, nice look and seem more durable than the original wheels/tires that came with trailer. I like that is a slightly better PSI capacity. Wife said, "the trailer doesn't look as cheap as before" I put about 75 miles on them for the first trip and they performed great.

by:

E-Trailer made it all right for me. I was frustrated when I first ordered as I’ve never dealt with delays. And needing some tires , of course they sold them and didn’t have them in stock. But they were quick to restock and get them to me. One set was the wrong wheel size. Wouldn’t fit. Not sure how that happened. But they immediately got it right for me. Thanks again. I’ll continue to support this company for many years to come

by:

I upgraded my 15’ jon boat trailer wheels to these radial load range D, replacing the bias ply load range B. I couldn’t be more pleased, not only do they look great, but with the extra weight I put in the boat I have peace of mind knowing it’s rolling on better rubber. I also ordered a spare tire mount and now have.a spare using one of the original tires.

by:

Purchased for our car dolly. I decided to upgrade to aluminum wheel. Wow, what a surprise! Excellent quality of tire and the wheel is very nice. Installed them and immediately drove six hours with no issues. Tires arrived quickly and even had the proper inflation upon delivery. Free delivery was great.

by:

I built my" tool shed" on a Triton aluminum trailer. I wanted doors on three sides. I do a lot of volunteer work at a Bible camp and it involves hauling my tools to the job. The trailer had 12x 4 inch wheels and I wanted something I more substantial to carry the load. I ordered the wheels and tires from etrailer. They came on time and we're exactly what I wanted. I have purchased other items from etrailer, and highly recommend this company

by:

Ordering from etrailer was quick and easy as always. Shipping was fast and prices are the best. I replaced my six year old galvanized rims and bias tires for these aluminum rims and radial higher quality tires. They look great on the Jon boat trailer. Now I can use the old ones that still look new for spares. I went up two tire sizes from the original painted rims and tires which makes the trailer ride much better. The only reason I did not give it five stars is the tires were 18 months old off the shelf.

by:

These wheels look great! Big improvement over stock rims. Quick receipt and everything was as advertised.

by:

My 1st Jon Boat, transformed it from a dingy Ugly Green to what you see now, custom 3 phase paint and custom built decking and carpeting, added Garmin ECHOMAP UHD, painted the trailer and needed the get rid of the worn out Bias-Ply Tires that originally came with the boat when I purchased it. Decided to purchase the 12 inch Kenda tire and 12 inch aluminum HWT Wheel from etrailer I had a very good experience with the live rep over the phone while processing my order. My tires and wheels arrived in a timely manner and none of the aluminum wheels were damaged upon delivery. Will definitely make future purchases from etrailer! The tires rode well at 75 mph on the highway for fishing trip. Thanks etrailer!

by:

Thank you etrailer for an amazing delivery on time with excellent tires. I will be ordering more wheel/tire combinations for my other trailers.

by:

I give it 5 stars based of off the ease of working with etrailer and the look of these wheels. I have had to replace tires every time I have made a coast to coast run. This is with the trailer at 80 % of its max load. I am hoping that these load D tires will carry the load. I will update my review when I return.

by:

Very nice tire and wheel combo. Used to replace and upgraded on my Jayco Qwest Pop-up. Only compliant and VERY minor one, I spent more time removing stickers and labels from the wheels & tires than it took time to mount them :-) but overall highly recommended !!!

by:

This is such a great upgrade from the small bias tire. It travels so nice on the freeway. The aluminum rim looks so much better. I definitely recommend to buy the extended Lugnuts. The standard Lugnuts do not have enough grip on them to tighten.

by:

I usually don’t review on line but I’ve been doing business with e trailer for 5 years they always have what I need , very competitive, and never have I had a bad experience with them…. I’m going to give them a 10/out of 10
