Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this portable 50 amp gen two Power Watchdog Surge Protector with Bluetooth and WiFi and also emergency power off. Now this is a 50 amp surge protector. This will prevent damage to your RV from power spikes and sustained high or low voltage. This one has a surge protection module on the inside that'll give you 4,600 joules of protection in case of a lightning strike.
And what's nice about that module, they make it very easy to replace it once it wears out. So what's nice about that is you can just replace it and not have to replace the entire unit. Now we mentioned this offers the emergency power off feature. This will cut connection in event of an error to protect electronics and appliances. Basically, it's gonna shut down if the current drops below 104 volts or raises above 132 volts.
It'll also cut the power for an open ground, an open neutral, reverse polarity, open circuit, and even mis-wired connections. Now it will automatically turn back on once the power is stable for 90 seconds. It does have a four second startup delay. This will get you up and running faster than other brands. That delay makes sure the power is safe to use before flowing normally, and it gives you an audible click that'll tell the surge protector is on.
What's nice with this model is it has a free smartphone app that's available for iOS and Android, and it'll connect this via built-in Bluetooth and WiFi to monitor your system and turn it on or off. And they make it really easy to pair it to your device by using this QR code on the front right here. All you have to do is scan that QR code and it'll quickly pair to your device. This device will monitor your volts, amps, and watts in real time to keep an eye on your power draw. And it'll even give you push notifications when the voltage is outside of acceptable customizable ranges.
Right up front here, these'll give you easy to see indicators. They'll show you if there's a problem and what that problem is. Basically this Watchdog logo right here, it'll light up white. If it does, that means the power is steady. Now if it does light up in red, that's telling you there is an error and it'll show you a error code down here in this LED display. And what makes it simple is all you have to do is go to the side here and they have printed a legend on the side here that'll list all the error codes and what's causing that error. So very quickly you can find out where the problem is. Also, these lights here can be dimmed via the mobile app. Now it does use a fault history that can record up to 10 faults. It is a timestamp on it to provide detailed information on the shutdowns. The housing this is in is a IP 65 rating for weatherproof protection against dust and rain. And if you notice, right up here around the cord at the top here, it has a metal bracket and this provides a secure place to attach a cable lock to. Now, what's unique with this one, if I pop open the cover here, you can see that it offers a side entry receptacle and even a cover on there. I'll pop the cover off, (device pops) just so you can see there's your receptacle and the reason it's a side entry, it'll help relieve stress on your cord when you plug it in. Makes it a lot easier with the side entry. You just plug it in there. Also, what's nice is right up here on the very top, you'll see this little white dot. That's actually an integrated light that can be turned on for nighttime visibility when you're making your connection. Now the clamshell bay door right here, it includes a ring on it that when you do close this, let go ahead and put the cover back on. Now when you go close this, the ring here will light up with the ring on the bottom here and it gives you a large enough area that you can put a padlock through both rings to give you an extra layer of security to prevent any tampering alongside that standard lock ring up here on your cable. Few specs on this, the amps, again, 50 amps. Maximum watts is 12,000 watts and the energy dissipation is 4,600 joules. Haven't used it yet. I am struggling to get the app to connect with the serial number or code scanner.
Excellent product, the Android app has some bugs when I tried to setup the system. Excellent Hughes product support.
I like this product as you can replace the surcharge verses the last product I had was a one and done and cost $400
I got my new Watch Dog surge protector right away, thanks George and the rest of you at trailer. A loose connection maybe to blame for replacing my old yeller one, but after 6 years it was time to upgrade to something better and I chose this because of all the videos and magazines and the Quartzsite rv show. I chose etrailer because of the customer service has always be great for me, thanks again everyone.
Easy to use. Love the fact you can replace the surge module. I bought an extra to have on hand (about $40). The surge protector being replaced by the Watchdog was a one and done. It was fried and no way to replace a module. Used a little over a year, so $300+ dollars down the drain.
After hard wiring this into my electrical bay, everything has worked as designed.
I like the App and the ability to track kWh and line voltage.
The Watch Dog is a great surge protector and ems. Installs easily. The toughest part was reconnecting to my distribution panel due to very tight space. Other than that all went well and is working properly. I really like that if I get a surge the Watch Dog will shut down and protect my camper but unlike the Surge Guard I will not have to purchase a new unit, just the circuit board at a much lower price than a whole new unit. Great job Huges Autoformers on the designing of this unit. I only wish I would have gotten this instead of the Surge Guard.
This device provides valuable information for awareness of power usage in our 30 Amp RV. This allows more efficient operation of the electrical supply so that we can manage 120 volt AC equipment to avoid tripping breakers.
We feel real secure in this product. Has always worked just as it is supposed to. Glad we purchased a product we can repair if blown instead of having to purchase a new surge protector after an event.
Just received the Watchdog Surge Protector yesterday afternoon. Plugged it in and seems to be working fine. Have yet to load the app but I anticipate no problem in doing so. Etrailer has been excellent in their communication and service.
Easily connects with Bluetooth. It has saved us on several occasions! Reverse polarity twice. It gives us comfort to have such a great product
Hardware looks sturdy and well constructed. Would like to have the face of the display aligned with the front of the connector, but I think I can remedy that. I'll unscrew the connectors, add some silicone grease to the O-rings (I hope that I find) inside, and put it back together square.
Software could be better. The one most important metric I'm looking for is peak Amperage when my A/C starts up, and I'm not getting a good number there. The display doesn't update continuously, and the peak power usage is just a moment in time, so I get a reading just before the peak and another reading just after the peak.
Would be great if the iPhone app was upgraded to give an option for "Peak Level" like is common on audio devices. That, or a line graph of the last minute or so, with a Y-Axis where I could find the Amps at the peak.
Two stars deducted for the lack of a vital software feature and a slightly sloppy assembly. For the money, I'd expect both.
Power Watchdog works as advertised. I love the Bluetooth connection to my phone that indicates power consumption. Installation was a breeze, other than the 50 Amp motorhome wire that is a tad stiff. Instructions were very clear.
After a year I have had no issues. Luckily I haven't had to use the protection, but nice to know it is there. I find that I use the app much more than I anticipated. It helped me track down an issue I was having with my converter. The Bluetooth connection is reliable and the app is straight forward and simple to use.
The unit works great! It transfers power to the RV almost immediately!!!
The previous protector was slow to diagnosis the power supply and let it into the RV!!! Drove me crazy!!! ??
The WiFi App also works great,,, very Informative, the display organized well!
While we have yet to be in foul Wx, or plugged into bad power, and no real testing, given its performance thus far, I have to think this unit will protect the RV!!!

I use this surge protector on our 5th wheel. The BT capability allows me to monitor power usage remotely and ensure my trailer is protected.
I wanted to add a surge protector with the emergency shut down after my Hughes Autoformer and this worked great. I chose this one since it had plug ends and could be easily disconnected if there were ever to be a problem with a in my electical compartment.
Received the Watchdog in the specified time window . Took it camping the next day . It is plugged in and doing its job well as I type . Seems to be a great product !!!!

Have used a few times. No issues but haven't come across a malfunctioning power pedestal yet. App works well. Item is a bit bulky though and plug can rest on the ground depending on pedestal height.
A must for any RV. The fluctuation in current levels is greater than you think and our surge protector gives peace of mind knowing that the electrical systems in our RV are protected. Our rig was plugged into a vacation home that we had traveled to and the 120 volt circuit consistently dropped below 104 volts at night and our watchdog kicked in to shut off power and then restarted when current levels rose. Highly recommend. Don

Love this protector, does exactly what it needs to do: PROTECT! This last summer we took a 4th month trip in our RV and ran into a lot of sketchy power posts, luckily this protector kept our RV safe. Heavy? Yes. Hard to store as the cable is vey stiff? Yes. Would I still use 100% of the time? YES!
