4-Way Trailer Connector Installation

Because the color/function of the wires on this connector may not match the color/function of those on your vehicle, be sure to use a tester (sold separately) to double check the function of each wire on your vehicle's tail light wiring harness before installing this connector. Once you've figured out the functions of your vehicle's wiring, use quick-splice or butt connectors (sold separately) to connect the corresponding wires on the trailer connector.

The number 1 reason trailer wiring comes up faulty is a bad ground, so make sure your ground wire has a solid and clean connection to metal. To make this connection, you'll need a self-tapping screw (sold separately) and the the included ring terminal.

Wiring Configuration

Wire Color Wire Function
Green Right turn and brake light
Brown Tail lights and running lights
White Ground
Yellow Left turn and brake light

Connector is Easy to Mount

This connector can be mounted on your bumper or attached to another bracket (sold separately) that mounts under your bumper. Simply run self-tapping screws (sold separately) the through molded-in holes on the connector housing.

Quick Tips:

We install a lot of wiring harness around here, so we thought we'd share a few tips we've picked up over the years:

  • Butt connectors - especially heat-shrink ones - provide the most secure, longest-lasting connection, so we'd recommend you grab a few and swap them out for the quick-splices in this kit.
  • Use a circuit tester on the plug terminals once the harness is installed to make sure everything's working. There's nothing worse than figuring out that you have a bad ground or a faulty connection right before you're about to hit the road.
  • Be sure to put a little bit of dielectric grease on the 4-way plug to protect the terminals from dirt, grime, and corrosion.

Hitch for 2018 EcoSport SES. Easy to install and looks good. Wire end with cover also looks good

Product was awesome. My last two connectors have corroded so bad within a year that I constantly was having to take a wire brush and clean off the pins to get good contact. I'm waiting to see what the environmental cap does to eliminate me having to do this. Also bought the vehicle side. Would highly recommend this to anybody with a trailer hook-up. Only thing I would suggest is to make sure anybody purchasing also buys the splices since none come with the product. All in all, a great buy. Thanks!

Using dielectric grease in the trailer connectors can also help reduce corrosion of the contacts.

Once again, if I'd bought the custom wiring harness, it would have saved me some time

Well made and delivered exactly as ordered. I used it in a custom wiring harness for a tow dolly. I wanted to provide a connection for magnetic based lights to place on the towed vehicle. It was perfect for my application.

Your product works great that’s a Pit a great help. Thank you.

Ordered a bunch of stuff for hooking up a towed. Everything arrived as ordered and quick shipping. Everything fit the application without much trouble. Communication from etrailer was excellent. I would purchase from etrailer again.

Did lot of searches for an item like this and found it only on etrailer.
Ordering was easy, communication was excellent and shipped
promptly. Item looks to be well made and I can install it by drilling only
one hole. Exactly what I needed for my application.

It worked just fine and I sold the trailer after repairing the harness.

The vehicle-side trailer was received in good time, nicely packaged, and it’s exactly what I ordered. Thank you so much!

Product was top quality. Exactly how it is described on the web site. fantastic company to deal with. Great prices and great service.

Used this to wire a car towed behind an RV. Easy to fasten the plug to car with the mounting holes

Connector worked great.
The old one got
destroyed from road salt.

All items were received as described, packing was very protective and I ordered standard shipping but was upgraded free of charge. Great place for purchases for all your towing needs.

Works like it should. Its installed on my '63 Land Rover that has an unusual (for North America) plug. It connects to my '53 Canadian Bantam army trailer like a dream.

  • How to Make Coiled 6-Way to 4-Way Adapter
I personally don't like using adapters if I don't have to so what I would do is use the part # RM-1064-B for the coiled section, the part # HM48440 for the 6-way section and then for the 4-way use the # HM48030 wired up correctly and you'd have a coiled 6-way to 4-way adapter without using any adapters that would work very well.

Since there isn't a 6-way to 4-way coiled adapter like you are looking for you'd have to piece together the kit you are in need of with the part # PK11604 for the 6-way, the part # RM-1064-B for the coiled wire section, and then for the 4-way part # HM48030 and you'd be set.

  • How to Stop an LED Accessory from Tripping the Towing Sensor on a 2019 Ford F-350
So this will sound odd, but sometimes these kinds of accessories that plug into the vehicle's trailer plugs can trick them into thinking a trailer is connected. That being said, the work around is equally odd. As most of these will utilize a 4 Flat harness for the power and signals, you simply need to install another 4 Flat harness, like the Hopkins Endurance # HM48030, directly to the corresponding wires behind the tail lights. This is a pretty common occurrence with the Ford F-Series trucks.

  • Can 4-Way Trailer Wiring Plugs Connect to Battery for Interior Light
Yes it would be possible to wire a 4-way to a 12 volt battery if you wanted to. You'd need a 4-way like the part # HM48030 and the part # HM48110 to run one of them to your battery and the other to your light. Otherwise you could run the vehicle side 4-way to the battery.

  • What Wiring Harness do I Need to Use the Saris Light Bar # SA4426?
The plug you need for the Saris Light Bar SA4426 is the Hopkins Endurance 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector Socket - Vehicle End # HM48030. While we do not have any harnesses that measure 5 feet long, this one is the closest (4 feet long). This plug comes with a weatherproof, insulated lid that covers the terminals. For waterproofing at the wiring points, I recommend the heat shrink connectors # DW05745-5. From checking your past orders from us, you purchased the Swagman Chinook # S64683 and...

  • How to Access 5th Wheel Taillight Wiring for Installing Wiring Harness
Usually, it will be necessary to remove interior trim panels to access the taillight wiring of a 5th wheel. If your particular trailer's taillights offer access from the exterior, then you'll have an easier time getting to the wiring to allow you to test it for function. It is worth contacting the trailer maker with your VIN to see if they can offer you guidance for accessing the wiring. You will want to use a tester like # PTW2993 to confirm the signal carrier on each RV taillight wire...

  • Converting a 6-Way Rectangle Plug on a Monaco Diplomat to a 4-Way Flat for a Boat Trailer
The 6-Way square trailer connector is not used by a lot of trailer manufacturers. A lot of Jayco trailers may have them but mostly you come across the 4-Way flat, like what you have on your trailer, and the 7-Way blade for RV applications. What I recommend is to convert the 6-Pole on the Monaco to a 4-Way. You can do this very easily by removing the 6-Way plug, and then testing the wires for function using a circuit tester like # PTW2992 if needed before installing them in a new 4-Way,...

This will allow you to run a 4-way extension from the truck to the second trailer to activate the turn signals. For an extension you could use the part # A40W42B which is a 40 foot section of 4-way wiring that includes a male 4-way and then to the other end you could attach the part # HM48030 and you'd be set.

We do not offer any wiring harnesses that are designed for your 2016 E-450. I am afraid any trailer wiring you want to do is going to be a hardwire effort. We do offer universal wiring harnesses that will work for you, but you will need to identify the wires for each of the functions by using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. You will need to first install a 4-way harness like part # HM48030. You will also need a 7-way connector for the RV, so I recommend part # ETBC7. This plugs...

In order to be able to flat-tow your 2006 Hummer H3, there are 5 items needed. You will need base plates for the Hummer, a tow bar, safety cables, lighting for the H3, and most states now require a supplemental brake system. The base plates I recommend are the Roadmaster Base Plates, part # 2505-3. When the front arms are removed the system is virtually invisible. The tow bar I recommend is the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, part # RM-520. This tow bar has a weight capacity of 6,000 lbs....

4-pole trailer wiring is usually described as vehicle-side and trailer-side since the male/female description that works well for other items can be confusing when applied to connectors. The adapter doesn't convert the separate signals to combined signals used by most trailers in the US.
