Built-In Controls for Adjustable Power

Hayes Engage Controls and Components

Braking Output

During the initial setup process, use the adjustment buttons on the left front of the Engage controller to adjust the braking output. The output control lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, the output is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if the weight of your trailer changes. To view the output setting, press either button and release. The output setting will appear as a percentage on the digital display - from 10 to 99. Use the plus and minus buttons to raise or lower the setting in increments of 5.

Power Ramp Time Setting

To adjust how aggressively the trailer brakes activate, press and hold the minus button until the display flashes, then release. The power ramp time (1-5 seconds) will flash. Use the minus button to cycle through the options. If you want to reach maximum power output faster, select a lower number. To get smoother braking action, select a higher number. When the desired ramp time is reached, press the plus button to select it. You can alter the ramp time setting to suit your driving preferences or to improve handling based on changing road conditions or varied trailer loads.

Manual Override

The Hayes Engage keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you re cruising.

Hayes Engage review

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller and manual override.

If your vehicle already has a plug-in brake controller wiring harness, just connect the unit to it. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to plug into. If a harness is unavailable for your vehicle, hardwiring will be necessary.

See also's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, either a 20-amp or 30-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Hayes Engage comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Engage. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. Both the amount of braking power (output) and rate of application (power ramp) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Super easy to install with the wire loom purchased separate

After one year of use the unit works as advertised but does require some getting used to.When first installed it goes to 25% activation in a total of 5 seconds so I turned it down to 15% and like it better loaded or empty..I prefer a proportional controller over timed but due to shortages at the time of purchase this one has filled the job well..Good price and easy install so will see how long it lasts...

Easy install and works great. I get all my trailering items from etrailer and have never had an issue.

Shipment was prompt and I received exactly what I ordered. Super easy to install in my 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 and im a girl. :)

Very good company to deal with will tell others about your great company

Nissan Titan pulling a fully loaded 14x7 Cargo Mate Blazer enclosed trailer. The unit was pretty easy to install. etrailer included the proper wiring harness for my Titan. It is not difficult to find the proper brake setting for the load size and not hard to tweak on the fly. This unit worked like a charm while hauling this large load about 1000 miles. So far it has been worth every penny and I got it at a great price!

Timothy N.

I have not pulled my trailer since I helped some friends move back in February, but the harness was still working well at the time.

Packaged well, came 1 day earlier than expected. Exactly what I ordered.

Great. Easy

Easy to install as I also ordered the wire adapter kit for my truck. Installation was quick and the unit works as I expected. Good investment for safety. Between the phone help with the ordering of the wire adapter kit and You Tube, it took me longer to watch the videos than it actually took to install it.

Hayes trailer brake controller, custom wiring adapter, power cord adapter, andersen camp leveler, trailer leveler. All of these items were delivered in a timely manner and as advertized. Will probably order other items in the future.

I have not had a chance to use the brake controller yet. I did get it installed today. The installation was easy.
The only thing that I might say is that the set up information was not very clear. It seems like there should be a notation somewhere in the set up about how long the lights are going to flash when there is an OC readout on the unit or how to stop the flashing. Maybe I missed something in the instructions.

Good product, easy fitment into factory Ford storage cubby. Small hole in back of cubby made to allow wire harness to pass through.

The website was easy to work with. When I needed help I was able to reach someone immediately and they couldn’t be more helpful. The items arrived earlier than expected. Installation was straight forward and works like it should. I would recommend using etrailer for all your towing and trailer needs.

This was a replacement purchase. The original failed at 8 years old. The original started flashing the brake lights every 5 seconds while turned off and parked. Every thing fit back in the original spot. I have not tried the function with a trailer on.

It’s easy to adjust to get the brake controls. I have a 26 foot filth wheel camper and it makes it easy to stop in the event of emergency.

This controller was so easy, mounting it under the dash, put in the 40 amp fuse. And the controller was ready to go. Install time was less than a hour. That included going to the parts place and getting a fuse. I am very happy

Works perfectly! Great service.

I purchased this item, didn’t read enough to know I needed an adaptor to fit my Chevy Silverado. Cut the wires and spliced them into my Chevy pigtail provided. Thought the item was not working. Called in and was told someone would call me back the next day with instructions. As told, a representative call me and advised me that Chevy has a different color code. After a quick change everything was functioning as hoped thank you e trailer

this is the best for the money you can buy,I deleted one star because the info on color codes as relates to my 2022 gmc makes it difficult to match color codes with the truck. neither kelsey or gm are great at this identification, particuly in terms of battery/ grounds/ signal /trailer brakes/ etc

works very well with my 28 ft trailer....easy to nice in the cuby hole ...with a little mod.... on the lower left side of my dash......looks factory

I love it, I have one in both of my trucks. It works on single & double axle brakes., you can adjust the delay & see what you set it on and don't have to guess what it is on. Very easy to adjust brakes for your loads, there again you can also see what you have it set on also. My neighbor used one of my trucks to haul a load hay & loved it . Asked me to order him one for his truck.

we had used this controller in the past, and the new one plugged right in for us

Directions were perfect. Never wired a truck for trailer control. Got it right the first time.

Easy install and works great. No complaints here.

Very simple install
Happy with the

Spot on. Works great.

  • Should the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller Flash OC Without a Trailer Connected
The OC you are seeing on the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller # HA81760 is saying you have an open circuit. Specifically it indicates there is no trailer connection detected or the controller is connected to a trailer with electric over hydraulic brakes. Since you have not connected the trailer it will flash for a few minutes or until a trailer is connected. There is nothing wrong with the controller and it is acting as it should.

  • Troubleshooting Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller Displaying Code CL
My technical contact at Hayes said their Engage Brake Controller # HA81760, the item you referenced in your question, could display the error code CL (current limit) if the trailer's brakes are trying to draw more current than the controller is intended to deliver. This controller is designed to power up to 6 brakes (2 each on three axles). If you are not exceeding the number of brakes that can be connected then chances are that there is a short in the brake circuit that is allowing excessive...

  • Troubleshooting OC Error Code on Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller HA81760
With the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller # HA81760 the code OC indicates that the controller does not sense an electrical connection to the trailer brakes, or that the trailer has electric-over-hydraulic brakes which do not work with this unit. Since you also have an issue with your tail lights staying on the problem is almost surely corrosion inside the trailer connectors. Corrosion can build up inside a vehicle's socket and inside a trailer's plug and sometimes it is hard to see...

  • What Does a CL or cl Code Mean on a Brake Controller
I did some research and found that on some brake controllers, the "cl" code stands for Current Limit. This indicates that the brake controller has sensed a power requirement greater than its recommended output. This could result from an intermittent short to ground, a faulty brake magnet, or too many brakes connected to the controller. Some brake controllers like the Hayes Engage, # HA81760, are designed for 2 - 6 brakes (up to 3 axles). But others like the Hayes Synchronizer, # HA81725...

  • Will the Hayes Engage Work in a 2013 Jeep Wrangler
Yes, you can use the Hayes Engage Trailer Brake Controller # HA81760 and adapter # HA81789-HBC in your 2013 Jeep Wrangler and it will be sufficient to tow your cargo trailer. Some models will require a wiring kit to run wire to the battery, so if you're not getting power when the controller is plugged in, you'll need to use part # 5506 which includes 20, 30, and 40 amp breakers. • Brake Controller Compatibility with Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
The Pilot 2-6 Brake Electronic Brake Controller - Time Delayed # 80550 has not been tested by the manufacturer to work with Electric Over Hydraulic brakes. Most time delayed controllers are not a fit for the EOH systems. The Curt Venturer # C74VV and the Hayes Engage # HA81760 are the only two the manufacturer states will work with EOH, but I honestly wouldn't recommend either for that use. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 or P3 # 90195 for the best operation with an EOH...

The brake controller you have installed in your 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 would not affect the performance of the rear brakes of your truck. • Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Activates Truck Brake Lights Randomly
