My Tahoe hatch would hit my RV jack when opening. Adding this shank made it open completely, without hitting. One thing to remember is to check your safety chains length. To insure they reach to connect to you tow hitch.

Works great, easy open hatch, and still tows fine.

Works perfectly!. Solved our turning radius problem between our trailer A-Frame mounted bike rack (Lippert Jack-It 2) and the canopy on our P/U.

Still going strong!

This will definitely allow you to open the tailgate on your truck with the trailer attached. It will also increase your effective tongue weight by 60% and make any breeze pull your truck around like a matchbox car. I used it once then went back to a standard shank. I’d rather disconnect my trailer than get pulled off the road.

by:

Most travel trailer have a very short hitch so opening your tailgate is impossible. This 2” receiver is approx 7-1/2” longer then the normal 2” receiver so now I can open my tailgate!!

by:

Easy switch over to longer shank .
No
major adjustments on WDH setting
Now can open tailgate all the way.
Did need to lengthen safety chains.

Longer hitch shank has been great. No difference in towing. Able to open tailgate fully.

by:

I needed the extra length of this hitch shank to get my trailer hitch ball out from under the spare tire on my Jeep JK Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon.
It works absolutely perfectly and is built extremely strong.
I am using with an Equal-i-zer hitch system, but would be suitable for most other weight distributing hitch configurations if the centering between the adjustment holes is correct for your ball mount.

by:

Allows me to tow a travel trailer with my tailgate down (2011 Ram). I did not notice any difference in feel when towing compared to my previously shorter shank. There is no issue with the travel trailer hitting the tailgate- the length is perfect. This is much safer than using a hitch extender. The bolt pattern mated to my existing Husky brand hitch head.

by:

Turned out, to be just what I needed. I have 5.5ft bed in my truck. Pulling my trailer now allows me to drive with the tailgate down and my dirt bike in the bed. Only thing to keep an eye on is your turning radius, it's not as tight. Overall, well built. But if the hitch pin hole was 2 inches longer, it would help with the turning radius. I like it.

I still use this every trip. The ability to lower my tail gate easily is awesome. I still like it and would recommend it.

by:

I'm now able to open the tailgate of my truck with the trailer attached. Side effects of using the longer shank are; power cable almost too short and original safety chains were too short and had to be replaced. But, the goal to be able to open the tailgate with the trailer attached was accomplished.

by:

I have a 2500 gmc sierra short bed and travel trailer. We purchased a golf cart and wanted to take the cart with us as when camping sites allow golf carts. Since my bed is 78" long I have to take the front cover of the cart off ( ezgo rxv) and I have to remove the tailgate because there is not enough room to lower it because of my trailer's electric Jack stand. My original equalizer weight distribution shaft is 12" so this gives me an extra 6" so I can leave my tailgate on and down. I no longer need to take the front cover off of the cart and the rear wheels are completely on the truck. Thanks George

by:

I haven't used this hitch shank yet but it looks and feels pretty solid. It took a total of three days from order to doorstep and that's awesome. I emailed trailer with questions and they were answered the next morning. The answers were very professional and to the point. I have ordered from trailer before and they have always delivered a good product quickly.

by:

I needed the longer shank to to clear my lift gate hitting my propane tanks. Works great!!! Came 1 day sooner than expected

by:

Perfect for pushing my travel trailer back to allow me to lower my tailgate while hitched up

by:

Great for those that need a bit more room between the trailer jack and tailgate while hitched up!

After a year this hitch is still in great shape and has come in handy on many occasions. Can tow most rigs with the tailgate down if needed. Be aware that in some cases you may not be able to make sharp turns with the tailgate down depending on the front of your towable.

@Kent Great tip, thanks for passing that along!

Problem solver for tail gate down clearance. Well made

by:

Required a longer shank in order to completely drop my tailgate when towing our travel trailer. Initially notified by eTrailer that this particular shank was out of stock, and they offered an alternate. Chose to wait; surprised that stock was replenished sooner than expected. ETrailer staff were proactive keeping me informed.

This thing is a BEAST. Haven’t installed it yet, but the overall length is going to work out well. The shipping box was damaged as was the paper wrapping. Did it affect the shank… no. One massive piece of steel.

So after using the shank for one year this beast of steel all I can say outstanding! I installed our Blue Ox weight distribution setup and adjusted the height, side note the bolt hole spacing in our application worked out spot on, and hit the road. 4500 plus miles and never an issue. Now this shank setup has some weight to it. We need to use an 2.5x2.5 adapter to attach to the tow vehicle. Ill touch up the paint soon just because. If youre looking for a shank that is longer and is solid you cant go wrong with this one. Vehicle: 2024 2500HD Silveradogas. Camper: 2023 No Boundaries 20.4 with Beast suspension

After a year of use and over 4500 miles its working great. We installed our Blue Ox weight distribution system the bolt hole layout worked in our favor and the height of the travel trailer is perfect. Its still a Beast especially fully assembled. Ill touch up the paint soon just because. Tow vehicle 2024 2500HD Silverado, gas. Camper 2023 No Boundaries 20.4 with Beast suspension.

Bought this longer shank because I knew is would benefit me immensely last year as we prepared for about two weeks on the road, traveling from NM to our many destinations in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. I tow a fairly light Jayco Hummingbird 17RK, behind a 2018 Toyota Tundra....and this solved the problem of not being able to lower my tailgate all the way, as the previous "stock" shorter shank caused the tailgate to hit the electric tongue jack on the trailer. I wanted to be able to move heavy items (these days it's all heavy) in and out of the truck bed without herniating myself lifting over the bed walls and/or unhooking from the trailer and moving the truck out of the way of the tongue jack for clearance to lower the gate. Perfect solution! And, now with the added convenience of not having to un-hitch on short stops overnight, when we just want to get in the trailer after a long day of driving, before resuming the next day's travels in the morning, is a real bonus. And, this shank is "solid" steel....no channel iron that might be compromised by the load and twisting that's going to occur at all speeds while hooked up. A few extra inches between tow vehicle and hitch didn't compromise the solid connection between the two units....no extra sway or problems with handling and maneuvering, whatsoever. Thanks, etrailer.com---this was money very well spent!

Perfect solution, still! I highly recommend to anyone who needs the room to lower a truck tailgate or raise an SUV rear hatch

Just what I ordered quick shipping thank you. Marc B

by:

Arrived in time to continue trip back home in Eastern Washington from Dallas area. Previous hitch was too short and couldn't open the tailgate and sharp turn I'd rub the propane covers on the tailgate. Both issues resolved. Thanks for quick attention.

by:

This shank was a replacement for etrailer's first recommendation, RP54998, which was too short for my needs, which I returned last week. I reordered an Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank - 18" Long - 7" Rise, 3" Drop, which came today and will work in my application. It is also beautiful, just as a shank should be. IMO, etrailer excels in customer service.

After using the 18 long shank, I am very pleased. It performs well when towing. I like the fact that I can fully open the tailgate.

Works great!

by:

I needed this because with the shorter shank that I got when I originally purchased the Equal-i-zer hitch, the tailgate on the F-150 I recently purchased could not be opened without hitting the jack on our trailer. This moves the hitch ball out so that there will be a lot of clearance and there should be no more problems opening the tailgate. It also will provide more clearance between the truck and trailer for those tight turns.

by:

I tow a 21 foot bumper pull camp trailer with a 2011 Chevy Suburban. With the standard length shank in my Equalizer hitch I couldn't open my rear lift gate when hooked up as the gate would strike the power head on my tongue jack. This shank gave me the length I needed for proper clearance. I have used it extensively during 2021 and it works great and is exactly what I needed. Great product!

by:

Great solution for trailer following to close! Just enough extra room on turns and backing that I don’t worry about denting the front of my trailer.
