The Equal-i-zer has a reputation as strong as its American-made steel. We love this hitch's solid build quality and that it helps to proactively stop trailer sway instead of just dampening it after it starts. Adjustable shank included.

Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.
Does it seem like no matter where you go, you meet someone who owns - and has vouched for - the Equal-i-zer weight distribution system? There's one really good reason for this: the Equal-i-zer's build quality is second to none. Many companies have tried to imitate it, and they just can't. Sure, they might preempt trailer sway just as the Equal-i-zer does. But for over 75 years, using American-made steel, the Equal-i-zer's unique design has kept haulers from white knuckling the steering wheel.
Let's talk about how it does that. Essentially, this system is built to hold your trailer in place both at the connection point and along the trailer's frame. Inside the system head, the trunnions are tightly pinched in place to create resistance. Because the trunnions are held in so tightly in the head, with the help of some torqued socket bolts, once the spring bars are installed, they won't be able to move side to side without a ton of resistance. At the other end of the bars, frame-mounted L-brackets provide a rigid surface that also helps prevent any unwanted movement. Just like the tension in the head, these brackets help hold your trailer in place. All of this tension throughout the system helps to create a rigid steel-on-steel setup that keeps your trailer in line and your ride level.
If a particularly strong wind gust crosses your path and your trailer starts to get off track despite the Equal-i-zer's firm hold, the steel-on-steel friction of the bars on their brackets will stop the bars from moving, and ultimately dampen any remaining trailer sway. Between the 2 friction points inside the system head and the 2 that you get at the L-brackets, the Equal-i-zer creates up to 3 times more side-to-side resistance than other weight distribution systems, or the equivalent of adding 8 friction sway bars. And because you won't need any of those add-on sway bars, you'll actually be able to use this system when towing in the rain or over gravel roads, and you can back up without having to disconnect a thing!
Because the steel-on-steel friction between the bars and brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear a lot of banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway in much the same way that locomotives keep multi-ton railcars from swaying. If the noise becomes too much of an issue for you, there are a few things you can do to address it. You could get some of Equal-i-zer's replaceable nylon sway bracket jackets (EQ95-01-5150). Or you could lubricate any friction points with their high-performance lubricant (EQ91-00-4250). But keep in mind that cutting down on noise isn't the only thing this will do. These quick fixes will limit the system's ability to prevent sway, too.
If you're determined to have a rock-solid towing setup without making any compromises, and you have to have an an American-made weight distribution hitch, and noise is kind of a deal-breaker for you, you may want to spring for the B&W Continuum or the Blue Ox SwayPro instead.
Once you've got the hitch ball torqued down, you'll have to adjust the tilt of the head to ensure proper leverage. To do this, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert it into the head assembly. Once the spacer is in place, tighten the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank. To check if your truck and trailer are level, you'll need to hook up and release your tongue jack. If you find that the rear of your truck is still sagging, add washers to increase leverage. If it looks like too much weight has been taken off your truck's rear axle and is sitting on your front axle, try removing a few washers.
While the washer-stacking method allows you to fine-tune the setup at the time of installation, it's going to require some patience. It can be time consuming because, if you don't get everything right the first time (which, you probably won't), you'll have to take the head unit apart to adjust the washers. You might have to raise or lower the L-brackets too to get the tension just right, and that's a bit of a pain also. Not to mention that you might have to repeat this process if your tongue weight changes or if you swap out your tow vehicle.
Pro Tip: For a step-by-step guide on how to fully install the Equal-i-zer, check out our videos at the top of this page. Our installers even have some advice to offer on measuring your vehicle's squat.
Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.
Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

Hello, neighbors. Steven here with etrailer.com. Today we're looking at a Weight Distribution System, and this specifically is the Equal-i-zer 4-Point Sway Control, rated at 10,000 pounds gross towing weight and a 1000 pound max tongue weight. So folks, why weight distribution What is weight distribution Well, quite simply, weight distribution, just like the name sounds, will distribute the weight over the axles of the tow vehicle and the trailer to give you a stability and controlled ride. So a lot of times, you're loading up your trailer, you put the couple on the tongue, and it squats down a lot. Well, weight distribution will help distribute the weight, push that backend backup level, keep the front tires safely on the ground for better traction, and also keep those headlights pointing in a safe direction.
So how do you know which system's best for you Well, there's lots of different options out there. You can read some articles on our webpage here at etrailer.com that explain weight distribution in far more in depth than what I'm going over today. But you can have different options. This particular unit uses brackets to mount the bars onto the trailer frame. There's some units out there that use chains, that kind of stuff.
This one has the sway control built into it. Other units, you have a separate little ball that hangs off of the the head unit and has a bar that comes off besides this one with a little ball that connects, and those kind of things. So there's lots of different options out there. So you can look into that more in depth on your own if you need to. But basically, you wanna pick a weight distribution system that's within the weight range of what you're towing.
So meaning you got a camper or trailer, whatever you want to tow, you should look at the manufacturer's information on it, whether it's the title or the placard in the front, wherever they put the information. But the gross vehicle weight of that camper, trailer, whatever it is. So let's say it's 9,000 pounds, well you add 500 pounds of gear and that kind of stuff. So add up all of that stuff and if it's under, this case, the 10,000 pound limit, then you should be good. Now if you we inchesre carrying, maybe 5,000 pound camper, 6,000 pounds maybe, maybe this one's a little bit too much, you wanna step down to a smaller rated one.
Because keep in mind, these bars are what's giving it most of that rating, not just the head and everything, but these spring bars are made of a spring steel and they are made to that force of spring. So in this case, these are rated up to a thousand pounds whenever it's combined and installed correctly. So if you had a thousand pounds, let's say on a small camper, it may be way too much and in turn it's not literally gonna lift the front end up, but it would make it for an unsafe ride. So just keep those kind of things in mind. Now, getting into this guy specifically. You obviously get the shank, the head assembly, the spring bars, the spring lift tool. You get the two L pins, retainer pins, and the lift bracket system. So these lift brackets here, here's a closeup of what that kind of looks like. It can fit a frame height of up to six inches tall. When you install these, they need to be from the center of the ball back on the frame, between 27 to 32 inches max. So you don't wanna be shorter than 27, and you don't wanna be longer than 32. So they'll give you about a five inch difference there. And that's kind of the sweet spot, based on all their studies and lots and lots of research over the years. So this guy gets on the frame. The L bracket here goes over once you put the spring bar up in place, and that just simply snaps down in place. I'm gonna slide it off, just so you can see how that works. So again, it's just a simple up or down, and that holds it in place on that bracket. So very simple design. I'm gonna go over here to the head unit here. So you've got the shank, obviously. The bolts that go through here to hold the shank in place with the head assembly. Behind this particular bolt, you can't see it 'cause the washer's there, but it's got a grooved oblong hole, and that's so that you can change the angle position of the head. Now per the instructions when you're setting this up, it'll explain how to pick what angle works for your system. They're gonna give you a stack of washers here. And this pin, this is the "head pin" as I call it. Depending on how many washers you need, there's a hole down in here. This goes into that hole between the shank and the head assembly. And then once you get the right angle you need, you tighten that up. And if you have extra washers, just put them somewhere safe. That way, you can get to them later if you ever need them. So the spring bars, they come into these retainers, there's a pin and clip that holds them in place. I left the pin in there, but the clip, that's just a basic retainer clip. And on the ends of those bars, it has like a upside down half circle, and it makes up with this bolt here. That way, it can't go any further than what it's at. So it's set at the right angle. So that's part of that sway control. It's keeping you in line and not letting you sway and fishtail and that kind of stuff. Now that shank there, I'm gonna pop up an image here on the screen. The way, you have some different measurements. You do have a max shank length of 12 inches. Now if you're using this in the rise position, you can get seven inches from the top of the hitch receiver opening. If you use it in the drop position, you can get a max of three inches of drop from the top of your hitch receiver opening. The old system here does have a nice limited lifetime warranty. It's made right here in the US. And all the metal here, all the steels. Hardened steel. The spring bars are made of a spring construction steel. Everything's been black powder coat. Most of it's been dipped as well to give it an extra protection. So it's gonna be nice and durable from corrosion, rust, that kind of stuff. Now keep in mind, one thing I always point out to people, although it has that heavy duty dip and powder coat, this is a metal on metal friction application. So over time, when you're using this, you're probably gonna wear down the surface here and underneath the spring bars, just from turns and normal everyday use. That's perfectly normal. You actually want the metal on metal on those spots, so just keep that in mind. Now folks, again, we went over the application of everything. If it's a two inch by two inch trailer hitch receiver, make sure that that receiver is rated for a weight distribution system, because not all of them out there are. Most of them are, just check with the manufacturer, make sure it can handle the weight distribution system. Now as far as the ball itself, that is not included. You do have to purchase that separately as with most weight distribution systems out there, because we don't know what size ball you needing. You may have a two and five 16ths coupler, you may have a two inch, and there are possibly some one to seven eighths, but most likely not that small on this type of of installation. Now that does require a one and a quarter inch wide, or thick diameter shank, and it cannot be longer than two and three eighth inches long, because it has to have space to go down there and not bottom out. So folks, again, a lot of information here today with the way distribution systems. Again, there's lots of information on our website as well. You can check out videos. Like I said, there's some reading material in there. There's a lot of information on this page itself. If you're watching this video, you obviously got to the product page here today. And you can always call us with any questions and concerns as well. Well folks, again, I'm Steven. Thanks for watching. I hope this information's been helpful. Again, this has been our Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System, rated at 10,000 pounds max and a thousand pounds max tongue weight. Have a great day, and thanks for watching.

The Equal-i-zer has a reputation as strong as its American-made steel. We love this hitch's solid build quality and that it helps to proactively stop trailer sway instead of just dampening it after it starts. Adjustable shank included.I had the same model on my 16’ Yellowstone for 11 years. Still looks and works great. My recent purchase is for my 1948 Terra Cruiser. I would not get any other hitch.
Well made, heavy duty, easy to assemble, and install. Only one issue, the sockets that the sway bars go into are virtually immovable. I had to loosen the bolts and beat on them with a rubber mallet to get them to move (they are supposed to move freely). I contacted the manufacturer directly via their customer service, and was informed that there is a 4 trip break-in period and that “eventually” the sockets will move easier. This disclaimer should be noted in the advertisement for this hitch.
First 400 mile tow today, 50% of that way loaded. Performed flawlessly, although I don't think I have it set up 100% yet. Finding a perfectly level spot in MA is an exercise in futility. I did the best I could with the trailer level in my shop on concrete, but the truck hanging out and nose down and to the left a bit. I think I need more tension. Rides real stiff compared to the Reese SC system I was forced to retire early due to parts being NLA (lost a torsion bar on a recent tow - don't know if it broke, or just slipped out - either way, I'm DONE with Reese!). As of right now, the bars feel like they have unequal tension, too. When unloaded, the left bar sits tight to the L-bracket, while the right bar is easily lifted by hand. Could be that my receiver is worn out - she's got some miles on her. Don't think anything is bent anywhere, but who knows. Anyway, these parts are HEAVY, strong, American metal - I have no doubt this thing will outlast that Reese system I had. Now to put in some work to try and get the ride quality back like the old system.
E trailer had the product and was very quick on the delivery to my home. This 1600 lb Equal-I-zer hitch is well made and I expect it will perform well with towing our 36’ travel trailer. Setting it up was straight forward and I look to taking it out on the road.
What can I say...the first time my wife pulled our trailer there was a wreck ahead of us. The tractor trailer next to us was smoking his tires while my wife had to lock up the brakes and our trailer stayed straight behind us.
This unit has made towing a breeze and my wife has no problems getting behind the wheel.
The shank is very well built, so it will hold some weight. I got the extended shank to haul with tailgate down and it works. however, the seat bars are very difficult to get on and off even with the supplied tool. It seems to tighten up after traveling. I've adjusted it 3 times now.
I rate this product "good" to alert potential users to an issue I face during installation of this Equal-i-zer hitch.
As I purchased this hitch, a 2 and 15/16" ball with a 1.25" shank stud and its nut were included. That nut requires a special 1 and 7/8" thin walled socket that slips down into a cavity where the shank stud protrudes and the nut screws on. The instructions state that socket is available at Equal-i-zer dealers. Such a socket WAS NOT AVAILABLE at any automotive parts store, car dealership, nor agricultural supply hardware I contacted in the small California town I was in. The nearest Equalizer dealer to me was over 100 miles distant, and I had planned to leave the day I began installation of the hitch. The instructions also state that a shim can be used if a 2 and 15/16" ball with a 1" shank stud and nut are used. That is the ball I already had on my truck and I was fortunate to find a properly sized shim at an agricultural supply hardware that I cut to length and used in my installation. I still needed a large socket and extension to tighten the nut because the nut was deeply recessed in the cavity. The box end wrench I normally used on the nut was of no avail; however, an automotive repair shop had such a socket and loaned it to me to complete the installation of the hitch. IF you are going to undertake the installation of this hitch yourself, then be aware of the need for either the special Equal-i-zer specified socket for the ball included, OR a 1.25" to 1" shim and a deep well socket for the smaller 1" shank stud and nut such as I used. Contact customer service at Equal-i-zer if you have questions in this regard BEFORE you purchase.
Having alerted you to the installation issue I faced, I now rate the product itself as EXCELLENT in performing the job it is intended to do when towing. Once I had the hitch installed, the instructions for making adjustments so it will perform as intended are clear. Along with the hitch I purchased a Sherline trailer tongue scale and that is an accessory I highly recommend.
I was towing a 2-axle car trailer loaded with a vehicle for a total tow load of 5500 lbs.
Using the tongue scale I adjusted my load so 10% was on the tongue. I was towing cross-country from California to Michigan with a 2010 Tacoma 4 x 4 rated with a 6500 lb towing capacity. I towed at 55-60 mph and had one incident that required immediate, heavy braking and the truck and trailer stopped perfectly, as if the trailer had no been there. So keep in mind, my rating of GOOD was to draw your attention to the installation issue I faced. The PEFORMANCE of the hitch was EXCELLENT.
I received this hitch a few short days after placing my order and as soon as it arrived I unpackaged it to admire the contents. Everything was intact and ready to assemble, just as expected. I also ordered the special thin walled socket, which I am glad I did since my mechanic friend that did my torquing didn't have a socket that would work for this hitch ball. I know it is expensive but I wanted everything done right.
I installed the hitch and set it up following the directions in the manual, and everything turned out perfectly. I think from start to finish it took the wife and I less than an hour and a half. Easy, and according to my measurements and a visual everything looked perfect. None of this is rocket science, and the installation is truly easy.
Well, time to try it out, and what great timing, we left Saturday morning in a 40 MPH headwind for 20 miles, and then another 25 miles with the wind quartering at us on a busy highway. This hitch worked flawlessly! I was tickled with the whole ordeal, and today coming back with no wind at all it wasn't much different than the day we had the wind. You know what wind means, right? WINDY IN ND. Yep, we get our share. This hitch served us very well, and I am extremely pleased with my purchase and the ease of installation and set up. I would order it again in a heartbeat.
My tow vehicle:
2018 GMC Sierra 1500 with max trailer tow package. 6.2 L with 8 speed transmission.
My travel trailer:
2016 Jayco Octane SL, weighs in loaded at 6100 lbs with a hitch weight of 910 lbs.
Just received and put together my Equalizer hitch but not set up or used with our new travel trailer yet. The quality of the parts are amazing. I have used other weight equalizing hitches and have 5th wheel hitch systems. This system is heavy duty and a pleasure to put together. Etrailer did a great job on the website describing, illustrating and proving support to make my decision so easy. Thanks Etrailer. Going to pick up new travel trailer today with new hitch system.
I have been using this EQ hitch towing my Bullet crossfire travel trailer with my F-150 for over a year now and it handles great. Tows smooth and without jerking or a rough ride. It took a few times to properly balance it and adjust it properly but what a major improvement from towing without it. I recommend this EQ hitch very much!!
i’m not sure what to say, this hitch is pretty much the hitch by which all other hitches are measured. Everybody knows if you want a great hitch. This is the one. It lives up to its reputation. The service at etrailer is fantastic, and their agents are extremely helpful and knowledgeable.
Excellent quality and straight forward installation. Only issue was obtaining the required torque with standard equipment. It’s heavy but does the job.
We've had a long and sordid history with distribution hitches. The failures are always in the same two places: at the hitch where the bars "click in" to the spring pins or at the brackets where the chains hang from. Don't use a chain-style distribution hitch for heavy duty use. This design alleviates both those issues and has been holding up great.
I towed my camper over 250 miles with the equalizer hitch. Set up and install was very easy. Very little to no sway at all with passing semi trucks.
This WDH has been terrific. My only complaint and why I only gave it 4 stars is because on the initial set up you have to have a special thin walled socked for the bolt for the ball. I tried several thin walled sockets including and etrailer one and all were too thick. So I ended up getting the equilizer socket, but that one is VERY expensive. It seems a bit much to first pay top-dollar for the WDH AND then have to buy their special socket.
Not the first equalizer hitch I've owned. Relatively easy set up and pretty effective.
This weight distribution works great. It was easy to get it dialed in. It tows great.
Ordered the Equal-I-zer weight dist hitch as a reaplacement for original W/D anti-sway hitch trailer dealer sold me (was getting quite a bit of sway). Relatively easy to install, instructions were very easy to follow, getting a torque wrench (430 ft-lbs) for the ball had been my only concern. Weight distribution was right the first time, truck and trailer sit nice and level. The trailer tracked very well and there was no sway when being passed by large tractor-trailers. Less noise than I expected after reading reviews when researching hitches. Very happy with the hitch and the GREAT service from etrailer. Highly recommend.
Fantastic piece of gear. Super heavy-duty. Made my truck and trailer ride so much smoother, brought the back end of my 3/4 ton truck back up to level, and completely eliminated the the swaying I would get from time to time with my dump trailer. Instruction manual that came with the kit was very detailed and well-written. One minor complaint: it would be nice if the ball came mounted to the hitch assembly because most of us don’t have a torque wrench that goes to 430 feet pounds. Beyond that, an excellent investment.
A little noisy but it works awesome and makes towing so much more comfortable. I have a custom trailer that is a little too tongue heavy. This hitch helped me get things leveled out and stable. The etrailer people were very helpful with recommendations for ways to mount the brackets on my trailer frame. No regrets here.
Was needing a weight distribution system for towing my 16' toy hauler and with Kats help from etrailer I couldn't be happier with this product. Trailer has a dry hitch weight of 950lb and 1100lb loaded. Set up took me an hour or so, but now I feel comfortable hooking and unhooking. Took it on a 100 mile trip a few weeks back in heavy rain with strong wind gust and handled great! Without it I didn't feel safe going 60mph on calm sunny day.
I purchased this hitch for a 9000lbs travel trailer with a 1001lbs tongue weight.
If your debating between a less expensive round bar and this setup, spend the money. This hitch is by far a better, easier, and safer setup.
I purchased this hitch to replace a Pro-series round bar with a friction sway control bar. The Equal-i-zer's 4 point sway control is big step up from a single point sway control system. The 1st drive felt secure and safe.
Install was easy, but time consuming for a 1st time installer. But worth it in the end.
Here's some pointers. 1. get the right tools, rent or barrow a the torque wrench to do the hitch ball 430ft/lbs, and shank bolts 320ft/lbs. The piece of mind that it's correct is worth it. 2. Plan for the afternoon, not a couple of hours. 1st setup is going to be close but your going to have to adjust it so plan on taking something apart. but setup is relatively easy, esp with the right tools. I had the trailer level the 1st go around to 2.5". So I had to move the head up one hole in the shank and then it was within 1". Distribution setup was still with in a proper setup, so I didn't have to make any further adjustments.
As far as the coupling and uncoupling the hitch. Using the tongue jack to release the tension is easy to do and quick. Esp. with an electric jack. I never liked the round bar with chain setup on my previous hitch.
High quality, easy install and setup, and seems to have great sway control.
The Equalizer Wt Dist W Sway Con And Ball
10k Gtw, 1000 Tw. Was recommended for my application and works great. [Local retailer] in New York did the installation on my New 2017 Starcraft ultra light. The product has a clean look on the trailer. The Equalizer is a great product for tight turns and backing into parking slips. No need to remove sway controls, because its incorporated into the Patented Design. I've used other styles in the past but this is the product for me.
Thanks Etrailer for the on time shipping of the Equalizer.
Did you Equalize your trailer today!! etrailer.com
Ordered this product for the built in sway control. My last hitch required another device to achieve this, but I didn't care for the additional work when backing up or on wet surfaces.
The order shipped quickly and arrived intact in 2 separate packages. The smaller of the two, contained the hitch shank and main body. It's heavy, so it was expected that the box would have a hole. The other larger package was sealed and intact. All parts were present.
Setup was straightforward, documentation excellent. Particularly the places to annotate measurements. The manual was small but effective. The ball mounting requires a thin walled 1 7/8 socket. I didn't buy this, my RV dealer torqued my setup for nothing.
Very satisfied with this hitch thus far. Will update when I have had a chance to put it through the motion.
