Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Put Trailer Sway on Lockdown

An infographic shows the 4 points of upward and downward forces interacting to create sway control in the Equal-i-zer weight distribution system

  • Other sway control systems reduce sway, but Equal-i-zer's system prevents it
    • System head holds everything tightly in place at the connection point
    • L-brackets hold your trailer in line along the frame
    • Steel-on-steel friction between L-brackets and bars forces trailer back in line if any sway still occurs
  • This system performs extremely well, but it's going to be noisy because of the steel-on-steel design
    • You can lubricate the L-brackets or cover them with special jackets to cut down on the screech, but you'll lose out on some of the sway-reducing friction
    • If superior performance, American-made quality, and noiseless operation are all must-haves in your book, check out the B&W Continuum or the Blue Ox SwayPro instead

Does it seem like no matter where you go, you meet someone who owns - and has vouched for - the Equal-i-zer weight distribution system? There's one really good reason for this: the Equal-i-zer's build quality is second to none. Many companies have tried to imitate it, and they just can't. Sure, they might preempt trailer sway just as the Equal-i-zer does. But for over 75 years, using American-made steel, the Equal-i-zer's unique design has kept haulers from white knuckling the steering wheel.

Points within the Equal-i-zer system where upward and downward forces interact to create rotational friction

Let's talk about how it does that. Essentially, this system is built to hold your trailer in place both at the connection point and along the trailer's frame. Inside the system head, the trunnions are tightly pinched in place to create resistance. Because the trunnions are held in so tightly in the head, with the help of some torqued socket bolts, once the spring bars are installed, they won't be able to move side to side without a ton of resistance. At the other end of the bars, frame-mounted L-brackets provide a rigid surface that also helps prevent any unwanted movement. Just like the tension in the head, these brackets help hold your trailer in place. All of this tension throughout the system helps to create a rigid steel-on-steel setup that keeps your trailer in line and your ride level.

A close-up image shows where the spring bar grinds on the steel bracket

If a particularly strong wind gust crosses your path and your trailer starts to get off track despite the Equal-i-zer's firm hold, the steel-on-steel friction of the bars on their brackets will stop the bars from moving, and ultimately dampen any remaining trailer sway. Between the 2 friction points inside the system head and the 2 that you get at the L-brackets, the Equal-i-zer creates up to 3 times more side-to-side resistance than other weight distribution systems, or the equivalent of adding 8 friction sway bars. And because you won't need any of those add-on sway bars, you'll actually be able to use this system when towing in the rain or over gravel roads, and you can back up without having to disconnect a thing!

Because the steel-on-steel friction between the bars and brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear a lot of banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway in much the same way that locomotives keep multi-ton railcars from swaying. If the noise becomes too much of an issue for you, there are a few things you can do to address it. You could get some of Equal-i-zer's replaceable nylon sway bracket jackets (EQ95-01-5150). Or you could lubricate any friction points with their high-performance lubricant (EQ91-00-4250). But keep in mind that cutting down on noise isn't the only thing this will do. These quick fixes will limit the system's ability to prevent sway, too.

If you're determined to have a rock-solid towing setup without making any compromises, and you have to have an an American-made weight distribution hitch, and noise is kind of a deal-breaker for you, you may want to spring for the B&W Continuum or the Blue Ox SwayPro instead.

Adjusting the Head Tilt

A close-up image of the Equal-i-zer hitch head shows the rivet and washers during installation

  • Adding washers adds tension, but it's not a case of "the more the merrier"
  • Stacking washers can be a pain, but you only need to do it once, or if your tongue weight changes

Once you've got the hitch ball torqued down, you'll have to adjust the tilt of the head to ensure proper leverage. To do this, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert it into the head assembly. Once the spacer is in place, tighten the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank. To check if your truck and trailer are level, you'll need to hook up and release your tongue jack. If you find that the rear of your truck is still sagging, add washers to increase leverage. If it looks like too much weight has been taken off your truck's rear axle and is sitting on your front axle, try removing a few washers.

While the washer-stacking method allows you to fine-tune the setup at the time of installation, it's going to require some patience. It can be time consuming because, if you don't get everything right the first time (which, you probably won't), you'll have to take the head unit apart to adjust the washers. You might have to raise or lower the L-brackets too to get the tension just right, and that's a bit of a pain also. Not to mention that you might have to repeat this process if your tongue weight changes or if you swap out your tow vehicle.

Pro Tip: For a step-by-step guide on how to fully install the Equal-i-zer, check out our videos at the top of this page. Our installers even have some advice to offer on measuring your vehicle's squat.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • How Low Does The B&W Continuum Weight Distribution System Hang Below The Trailer?
That is definitely a feature which worries me about the B&W Continuum Weight Distribution System # BW78FR. While there is not a specific measurement I can give you as the bars move up and down depending on the load placed on the bars, B&W makes the following claim. "We performed 100,000 miles of real-world testing with our design and have not had any issues with ground clearance except in extreme road conditions. Usually, the rear of the trailer or the leveling jacks will hit the ground...

  • Is There a Weight Distribution System with Solid 2.5" Shank
Yes, we do have weight distribution system options which come equipped with a solid, one-piece 2-1/2" shank. There are not many options but of them, I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ64FR which is for trailers from 12-16K. It can be used with slightly lighter trailer as well. I have attached a full list of options below if this will not work.

When it comes to picking out a 14,000 pound weight distribution system with a 2-1/2 inch shank, I recommend The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 16,000 pounds GTW, 1,600 pounds TW # EQ64FR. This weight distribution system has a tongue weight between 1,200 pounds to 1,600 pounds and has a gross towing weight up to 16,000 pounds. You need to be as close as possible to the weight of the trailer you will be towing when installing a weight distribution hitch...

  • Will Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Brackets Sit Low Enough for Generator Box Door Clearance
Hey Scott, thanks for reaching out! I don't have the exact height of that bracket, but the bolt from the Equal-i-zer # EQ64FR that sits on top of the trailer frame is 5/8" in and of itself so you're looking at around 1-1/4" at the very minimum, and that's if you're able to get enough tension with the system set at that lowest setting. A lot of times the brackets need to be brought up some so the bars have enough tension and there isn't a way to figure this out pre-owning it - so there...

  • Weight Distribution Hitch for Trailer With 11,495 lb GVWR
Greetings Tim; when you choose a WDH you want to go off of the tongue weight of your loaded setup. The best way to find this is to measure with a scale like the # BTBRV44FR. Since you provided the specs for your trailer we can take a guess to help find the right system. Tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight. We know your dry tongue weight is 890 lbs. Factor in batteries and propane and you're already adding about 100 lbs so close to 1,000 lbs unloaded. At the high...

Hi Jason; it looks like your 2022 Yukon towing capacity is 7,500-7,900 lbs so I'm not surprised you're getting that rear sag. The best solution is going to be a weight distribution hitch. This will keep you level and also help reduce trailer sway for a much improved towing experience. I see you looked at some suspension enhancement but your only option is the # CSS-1168F which fits a 2WD and is only for the front axle which doesn't help anything. • Which is Better Weight Distribution System Reese Strait Line or Equal-i-zer
The Equal-i-zer weight distribution systems and the Reese Strait Line systems are widely considered to be the best two systems you can get. The sway control of the Strait Line setup is better than the Equal-i-zer, but the Equal-i-zer weight distribution has yet to be improved upon so it has the edge. So if you are wanting the best WD the Equal-i-zer is the way to go but if you want the best sway control the Strait Line is the way to go. Since you haven't had issues with sway I'd go with...

Unfortunately Reese no longer offers the hardware for Replacement Head # RP58112 separately. This is an all to common problem we experience with Reese as they update and phase out their weight distribution hitch systems. • How Does The B&W Continuum Weight Distribution System Control Trailer Sway?
The B&W Continuum Weight Distribution System # BW28FR works to reduce sway from occurring by distributing the tongue weight evenly across your vehicle. It does not have a physical sway prevention like a Friction Sway Bar # 17200 or other weight distribution hitches like the Equal-i-zer # EQ37100ET. B&W believes by distributing the weight they are going to prevent sway from occurring. Personally I feel the Equal-i-zer systems make the most sense for most users. This will require you to...

Trailer manufacturers list the loaded tongue weight for a trailer as being 10% of the loaded weight of the trailer, which is why you see 1,050 lbs for a GVWR of 10,500 lbs for your trailer. In reality you can make the tongue weight whatever you want by adjusting the cargo in your trailer forwards and backwards, but the ideal tongue weight is 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight - this will give you best towing performance and stability.
