Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Note: Axle does not come fully assembled.

Pre-Greased Hubs

A trailer hub with the grease cap taken off shows greased bearings

The pre-greased hubs in this kit come with the bearings, races, and seals already installed, which makes for a faster install time and less mess to deal with. After you've put on the grease caps and lug nuts (included), you'll be ready to roll.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Excellent Axles

by:

Based off of just a quick inspection and part count it looks good to me!

by:

I replaced the old axles on my trailer. I found these to be excellent quality. The install was not bad. I've taken a couple of long trips maybe 1000 miles one way and loaded. These axles head up perfectly.

I ordered two axles to upgrade my trailer capacity to what the frame is rated for, 12,000lbs. The axles have great bearing seats and backing plate studs. The backing plates are fully assembled and ready to connect to the wires already installed into the axle tubes. The hub assembly went smooth and only one set of break shoes needed adjustment. A good buy along with the 5 fully assembled tires and wheels.

by:

Arrived on time and in good condition. The ends of the axel should be better protected. The delivery person dropped mine vertically on the asphalt. Fortunately, the crown nut took the blunt of the impact and the grease fitting wasn’t damaged.

by:

I used these axles to upgrade my travel trailer suspension.they Seem to be a good quality item. Good paint job on the axles. Compared to axles that came with the travel trailer. Which helps living on the coast.

by:

Great videos that walked me through the installation being I’ve never done something like this before!
The fit was prefect for my trailer.
The only issue was the grease zerts were galled in shipping & I had to replace both zerts.
My recommendation would be for etrailer’s shipper to provide better protection for the axle zerts.

by:

Great axle so far has handled everything I have put on it so far and that's been a lot. Bought this because I managed to bent the axle by hauling my wife's equinox on it and hit a pot hole the size of grand canyon that bent the axle beyond safe operation. The other axle didn't get bent nearly as bad as this one but will also be replaced in the next year or so. But so far this replacement brake axle has held up pretty well over the last year.

by:

The brakes came apart in shipping and there should be directions on how to put it together

by:

Great product, as described, staff was vary helpful in making the purchase easy.

by:

Part arrived early, great communication from the team at Etrailer through the proccess.

by:

No problems. It's working great.did a few trips no incidents.

by:

etrailer is the best. I've been dealing with them for years. The orders are always right. The products are top-of-the-line.
Delivery was fast and free.. I have ordered online and I have called and spoken to the sales staff there who were very helpful and knowledgeable about their products. If you have trailers and you don't give a trailer look, you are missing out.

by:

Aside from not received complete order the first time, I will still recommend etrailer for all your needs

by:

Great value. I upgraded a 3500lb trailer and with the added brake it really helps. I use it to haul tools around so it handles the weight much better. Towing is a breeze now. Installation was easy as well. I will be buying more axles and parts in the future.

by:

The replacement axle is working very nicely. It is well engineered and quality’s is evident

by:

The axles are not yet installed. There was 1 bolt missing I called and they shipped it out immediately. to date everything was as they said. My delivery arrived much sooner than excepted. I would recommend using etrailer they have a very good process.

by:

Exactly what I ordered packaged nice and pregreased bearings.

The Outer Bearing # 1779 and Inner Bearing # 2788 are going to be specific to your current 22834 hub. You will need to replace your axle as the current 5,200LB axles use a much larger spindle. • Can Axle Weight Rating be Increased with Upgraded Leaf Springs and Hubs
To upgrade your axles to a 5,200 lb weight rating you'll have to swap out your 3,500 lb axles for 5,200 lb axles like part # e55SR that comes with electric brakes and has 95" hub-face and 80" spring-center measurements. Unfortunately you have to upgrade everything to get the higher weight rating as the axle tube itself will need to be stronger. And even after you upgrade the axles it doesn't necessarily mean your trailer can handle more as the trailer frame is also a factor when it comes...

  • Replacement Axle, Hubs, Brakes, and Tires for Older Trailer With Dexter 22834 Hub
Based on the axle and bearing measurements it looks like your trailer was using a Dexter 22834 hub. The Outer Bearing # 1779 has an ID of .938" and the Inner Bearing # 2788 has an ID of 1.50". The outer bearing is slightly off but that may be due to a measuring error. That would also mean you have 5,200 lb axles on the trailer. This is an obsolete assembly so you will need to replace the entire axle. For a replacement you can use the # e55SR. This will stick out an extra 3/4" on either...

  • Is There a Replacement Spindle For a Dexter D44, 4400LB Trailer Axle?
My recommendation is to replace your axle with a 5,200lb like # e55SR as the 4,400lb spindle is so uncommon they are not readily available. This will give you stronger components to lessen the chance of you having to replace a spindle in the future. If you can provide me with the dimensions for your axle I can verify the correct replacement for your D44 axle. To switch your 10,000lb Hudson trailer to use more standard wheels and tires you will need to replace your axles.
