Surge-type actuator features a corrosion-resistant composite master cylinder and a primed finish. EZ-Latch coupler latch is easy to use. Welds onto a 50-degree A-frame trailer.

Features:

  • Hydraulic actuator activates trailer's brakes when tow vehicle slows or stops
  • Ez-latch coupler latch is secure and easy to use
  • Composite master cylinder is durable and efficient
    • Glass-reinforced nylon construction resists rust and corrosion
    • Large reservoir provides increased capacity for brake fluid
    • Automotive-style diaphragm cap creates completely enclosed system to help prevent contamination of fluid
  • Acetal copolymer lining provides smooth operation as actuator telescopes in and out
  • Breakaway included
    • Snap hook on safety cable ensures secure connection to breakaway lever
  • Heavy-duty steel construction
  • Weld-on installation
  • Primed finish
  • Made in the USA

Specs:

  • Application: 50-degree A-frame trailers with hydraulic drum brakes
  • Ball size: 2"
  • Gross towing weight: 8,000 lbs
  • Maximum tongue weight: 800 lbs
  • Model number: DA91
  • 1-Year warranty

Note: This actuator is compatible with the Demco lockout solenoid (DM11993). If you choose not to add the reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes.

When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

  • Measurements of Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator at Openings for Trailer Frame
The Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM8609502 measures 4 inches at the smaller opening and 15.313 inches at the larger opening. This actuator is for drum brakes, is rated for 8,000 pounds towing, and is made in the USA.

  • Is Manual Reverse Lockout as Effective as Solenoid For Demco Actuator A91
There isn't an angle I can give you for when the lockout would be needed; however, if you want to be able to back up as needed you will need a reverse lockout with the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM8609502. That said, the Manual Reverse Lockout Kit for Demco Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuators # DM5939 is absolutely just as effective as the Reverse Lockout Solenoid for Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuators - Non-Bypass # DM11993. The trade-off being the manual lockout just isn't as convenient...

  • Can Surge Brakes be Added to 1996 Scamp Trailer that Weighs 2,000 lbs
For a lighter A-frame trailer to add a surge brake setup the best option is the part # T2492800 which has a 6k capacity. But as long as you have properly rated brake assemblies on your trailer it will still work fine on a 2,000 lb trailer. I attached a help article that covers adding surge drum brakes to a trailer for you to check out as well.

  • Dimensions of Demco Hydraulic Drum Brake A-Frame Actuator DM8609502
Demco Hydraulic Drum Brake Actuator # DM8609502 is a standard 50-degree A-frame coupler-actuator rated for 8000-lbs trailer weight as you noted. It has a primed finish and is intended for weld-on installation. I went to our warehouse and measured the front-to-back length of the main triangular mounting plate, from the narrow forward end to the wider back end. This front-to-back length is 12-inches and this is shown on the linked photo along with some other key dimensions.

  • Are Replacement Parts Available for an Atwood Surge Brake Coupler?
The Surge actuator you currently have installed is an older Atwood model. The cap for the brake fluid confirmed that for me once I saw it. Problem there is that Atwood is no longer in business and no replacements are available, unfortunately. We do have a potential replacement available, but it is quite a bit different. The Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM8609502 is a weld on actuator with a 2 inch coupler, and is rated up to 8,000 pounds. The only problem is how it attaches. I will...

  • Is it Possible to Lock Out the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM8609502 For Use with Elec Brakes
Basically you need to lock the outer sleeve of the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM8609502 to the inner sleeve to prevent the two from moving. You could run a large bolt through all of the pieces to allow this to happen or some will weld the pieces together.

  • Solution for Older Atwood Surge Actuator with Bad Shock
Atwood is no longer making actuators at this time so there are no replacement shocks for their actuators anymore. Especially for ones as old as yours. So what you'd need to do is replace the surge actuator with a similar A-frame actuator like the part # DM8609502 which fits a 2 inch ball and is designed for drum brakes. There isn't a similar shock available we can recommend either.

  • Replacement Surge Brake Actuator For a 2003 Jayco Qwest Pop Up Camping Trailer
It appears your 2003 Jayco Qwest uses an A-frame tongue which would require a Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM8609502 to be welded on in place of your Atwood 85736 master cylinder. We do have the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM72VR which bolts to a 3" wide straight tongue if you do not have an A-frame tongue.

  • Replacement Coupler Recommendation for an Atwood 83000 on an A-Frame Trailer
We do have one a-frame coupler, part # DM8609502 available and it is rated for 8,000 pounds, I think this would be the best fit for your trailer. The Titan coupler that you referenced is designed to bolt directly on a the trailer tongue. This is a weld on coupler and fits trailer with a 50 degree a-frame, which is the most common angle for a-frame trailers, and has a 2 inch trailer ball coupler. If you were to cut out your existing coupler, this one should weld on over the a-fame of...

  • A Frame Surge Brake Recommendation for Replacing Atwood Brake Actuator
Thanks for the picture of your actuator that you are wanting to replace. The Demco Hydraulic Actuator part # DM8609502 would be a great option as it is designed to fit A-frames like yours. It has an 8k capacity, designed for a 2 inch hitch ball, and is designed for drum brakes.

  • Replacement Actuator Recommendation for GDC Surge Actuator
Since we don't carry any master cylinders that are a fit for the GDC brand the best solution we'd have would be to replace the entire actuator. Your picture is a bit fuzzy, but the best match we have is the Demco Actuator part # DM8609502 which fits the standard 50 degree angle A-frame trailer.

  • Parts Needed to Add 3,500 lb Hydraulic Drum Brakes For Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator
We can definitely put together a hydraulic drum brake kit for a 3,500 lb axle that will go with the Demco actuator, and there is indeed a lockout solenoid that is compatible with the actuator. I'll go ahead and make a list of the parts you need to get set up. - Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator - Drum - Primed - A-Frame - 2" Ball # DM8609502 - Reverse Lockout Solenoid for Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuators # DM11993 - Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit - Uni-Servo - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies...

It sounds like you are referring to surge brakes in which case I do have an option for you to add these to the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System part # ASR1THDS03. In order to do this you will need the Demco Hydraulic Brake Kit part # 40716-15 and two of the etrailer Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly part # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K. • Can Electric Brakes Replace Hydraulic Brakes on a 1995 Jayco Eagle
There is less maintenance with electric brakes compared to hydraulic brakes so switching to an electric braking system would help in that regard and since you already have a brake controller there isn't any additional major costs. You could also still use the same coupler you have now though it will still move in and out. Most people go ahead and change out the coupler too. We have a lot of A-frame couplers depending on the capacity needed. For the brakes the trailer will need to have...

Hey Scott! Both the 3,500 lb and 3,750 lb brake assemblies work with a 10" x 2-1/4" drum so either one will fit with your hubs, but you can verify your axle capacity either on the sticker tag on the side of your EZ Loader Trailer, or by looking at the tag in the middle of your axle(s). One you know what weight capacity you have then I recommend getting Free-Backing brakes so you'll be able to back the trailer up. If you're able to bolt one on, you could use the # DM8609101 instead which fits a 3" wide tongue. The pictures I was able to find were pretty low quality so I can't quite tell.
