Tech Tip: If don't already have brakes that are free-backing, you'll need to get some. Otherwise, your brakes will keep locking up on you when you're backing up. And trust us on this one - upgrading now will be a lot less work than upgrading your wiring harness and a compatible actuator with an electric lockout.

Never Second-Guess Your Connection Again with the Demco EZ-Latch

Few things matter in towing as much as a secure connection to your hitch ball. Have you ever coupled your trailer, only to re-do the whole thing just convince yourself that you had a secure connection? Heck, maybe you even pushed on your truck a few times just to be certain.

The thing of it is, your basic coupler doesn't really have a mechanism to tell you that it has a firm grasp on the hitch ball. You either just have to eyeball it or try to wiggle the coupler latch until it closes. If there's a significant gap between your ball mount and your hitch ball - otherwise known as highballing - it can put your trailer at risk of becoming disconnected while towing.

The underside of the Demco eZ-Latch shows the inside of the coupler with the latch disengagedThe underside of the Demco eZ-Latch shows the inside of the coupler with the latch engaged

To prevent this, the coupler portion of this trailer brake actuator has an automatic latching mechanism known as the EZ-Latch. To use it, you won't need to do anything different from what you're used to. As you lower the trailer onto the ball using your tongue jack, you'll see the latch rise. Then, just listen for it for the metalic clink . When you hear it, you'll know for certain that you've got a good, strong connection, allowing you to be on the road a little bit quicker and with a lot more confidence.

Built-In Theft Deterrent

Unlike most couplers, which have a pin hole on the handle latch, the EZ-Latch coupler features a hole on the side of the coupler itself. Inserting a coupler lock through this hole will keep the latch from lifting, preventing disconnect and theft.

Sturdy, Corrosion-Resistant Construction

Chances are, you're replacing your actuator because your old one is rusted out. This one will too, but probably only the outside, and that won't be for a long time.

This Demco actuator features a durable zinc coating with a 120-hour salt spray rating that is designed to limit rust and corrosion. On the inside, the composite master cylinder is made of corrosion-resistant glass-reinforced nylon to further ensure durability and longevity.

How Does a Surge Brake Actuator Work?

When you're towing, the momentum of your rig pushes and pulls on your hitch ball as you slow to a stop. And with a surge brake actuator, that momentum uses the coupling point to push back on the inner portion of your surge brake actuator, which then compresses the master cylinder inside. As it contracts, it pressurizes your hydraulic brake lines, and ultimately engages your trailer brakes. When you start moving again, your tow vehicle pulls that inner portion back out, allowing the trailers wheels to start rolling again.

This brake actuator was an easy replacement to my previous 1996 Tennessee boat Trailer actuator. I did have to get creative with the line plumbing do to the change in angle. Also needed to change the lock to a pin lock. I like the latching feature and overall quality. I would not hesitate to make this purchase again.

by:

Thank you to the etrailer team! Wonderful product, easy to hook up and get my boat and trailer safely to the lake. Fast shipping and arrived as advertised. This day and age it’s hard to get through to costumer service with most products I buy. It’s been over a year and I had George J reach out to make sure I was happy with my actuator along with a way to contact him in a personalized email. If you’re looking for a solid product and costumer service to back it, I’d start here.

by:

This set up has functioned well. I do like the easy clasp.I chose to bolt instead of weld. No issues.

by:

I’ve owned this for 1 year now and have towed about 3,000mi at a 4K lb capacity - it works great and have had zero issues. Honestly this is the easiest hitching mechanism I’ve used, and there’s no need for a lock pin. Goes on smooth and releases easy every time. I highly encourage cutting off your old surge hitch and replacing it with this one, so much time saved with how easy it is. Even bleeding the brakes was a breeze by pulling the emergency lever by hand. Great product.

by:

James answered all of my questions. I was told the piece would arrive Tuesday ( order placed on a Thursday) but it actually came on Saturday, only two days later. I installed it the next day and it fit/worked perfectly.

The hitch was good. The instructions weren't complete. There's no reference to how to release emergency lever. No hardware provided. For this price it should have. I used grade 8 bolt setup with washer, lock washer and lock nut. The install of brake valve was tricky. Overall time to change it was less than 20 minutes. Most of my time was spent installing brake line. For the trouble of an incomplete video demonstration, no hardware, and no clear instruction of emergency lever I'm giving it 3 stars. Overall the hitch worked and was a good upgrade.

by:

Perfect replacement for my body trailer. Actuator is alittle hard to prime with out a bench to set it on. But works great

by:

I ordered a brake actuator on a Thursday afternoon and had it shipped next day. There was some shipping issue and called customer service. Even though origenal arrive date was missed, customer service and etrailer team made it right. I appreciate the service and will do business with this company again.

by:

The brake actuator was easy to install and to use to blead the brakes and has worked well since then.

by:

I bought this for a direct replacement of an Atwood surge brake actuator for drum brake application in which they no longer make. Ateoodpart # 85778 is obsolete now guys. This Demo DM72VR fit directly on my 3 inch tube tongue and bolt pattern was the same. Easy fix.

by:

This hookup is so much better than the original. Fast delivery and great phone support / service!

Easy to install and have been working great on a boat trailer towing a 23 ft boat

by:

Great service! Quick response and delivery.
My
package was delivered to someone else in error by UPS. E trailers was willing to do their part to help me either locate it or file a claim.
Found my package and all is good now.
They are good at communicating with you!

I traveled down to Texas from Canada only to find out that both my brakes an actuator are completely worn out. I was able to source the brakes locally but found out that the Attwood actuator no longer was available. I searched the internet and immediately etrailor came up with a solution. It was easy to order and have it shipped to me. They said it would take 3 days and it arrived as promised. I had it installed in about a 30 minutes. Very easy. The one thing is that nowhere does it say that I needed 4.5 inch bolts to mount it or instructions of how to bleed the actuator. I found this out by reading the reviews of this product. Otherwise I am very impressed with the product and the ease of following my order from start to finish.

by:

Looks great on the trailer. Have yet to test it out.

by:

Easy bolt up I like the new locking sys tem

by:

Great turn around from order to delivery...just wish you included the support bolts that anchor it to the frame

by:

Cheap amd works just fine

by:

Excellent this unit works great and is very easy to install

by:

Received as expected, straight forward install to replace 30year old original on EZ loader boat trailer, I was skeptical as the price was less than most other options. Couldn’t be happier, EZ latch system works really well, no jamming of ball retainer when dropping the coupler on the ball, and very positive latching. Everything lined up perfect, there is reinforcing plates on the surface that runs on the sides of the tongue, at some point I will get 1/2 inch longer bolts so I can retain the lock washers, but after 45minutes was able to use trailer. Great product

by:

Everything it was to be, exact fit. Thank you.

by:

Fit perfect for attwood replacement

by:

Arrived on time, the only issue was more on the manufacturer i think, the hitch did not have a safety pin

by:

Appreciate the fast shipping and updates for this order. Thank you for the great customer service!

  • Options For Replacing An Atwood AT82543 Surge Brake Actuator
I do have a solution I can offer you, but the Atwood AT82543 is no longer available. It was discontinued back in 2017. The closest option we have to replace your Atwood 82543 actuator is part # DM72VR. However, it doesn't have the reverse lockout like your Atwood does. You can add a reverse lockout by adding part # T4748800. This is a reverse lockout and requires your vehicles trailer connector to have a reverse circuit. If your vehicle has only a 4 flat trailer connector, you can use...

Atwood is out of business which is why there isn't a replacement master cylinder to be found. So you'll have to replace your actuator with an appropriate option, like the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator - Disc # DM62VR or Drum # DM72VR depending on what type of brakes you have. I have added a link below to our entire selection of actuators.

  • Preferred Method For Bolting On A Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator DM72VR
You can certainly go ahead and re use the existing 2 bolts, provided they are in good condition. The fish wire method shown in the video works too, but it is also very common to just use the two bolts like your old Atwood actuator. Personally I would use something like the Curt Coupler Hardware Kit # C25388 for installing the # DM72VR actuator. So if the existing bolts are similar grade 8 bolts, you will be good to go. While you certainly could drill a 3rd hole and use a 3rd bolt, it is...

  • Replacement Part Availability And Options For Replacing An Atwood Brake Actuator
Replacement parts for an Atwood actuator are going to be very hard to find these days. Atwood stopped producing actuators quite a while back, so at this point unless you can find parts secondhand, replacing the actuator is going to be your best bet. To replace the Atwood actuator the Demco # DM72VR for drum brakes or # DM62VR for disc brakes will work really well. These have a 7,000 pound towing weight capacity, a trigger-style latch that's easy to use for a secure connection with the...

Personally I would use something like the Curt Coupler Hardware Kit # C25388. While you certainly could drill a 3rd hole and use a 3rd bolt, it is not required.

Atwood is no longer around and parts for the Atwood 85778 are no longer available. For the most part it comes down to cost between the two hub/drum assemblies. However, since this will be going in the water on your boat trailer I would stick with the Dexter which has the 500-hour salt spray rating. • Compatibility Of Surge Brake Actuator With Different Trailer Hydraulic Drum Brake Manufacturers
You are able to use any drum brake actuator with your hydraulic drum brakes. The manufacturer for the brakes does not need to match the actuator manufacturer. You do need to ensure the actuator is rated for the weight rating on the trailer. This is required as the shock and master cylinder are paired to provide the correct amount of braking force. With an actuator rated for 6,600lbs it can be used for either a single 6,600lb axle or dual 3,300lb axles.
