Video Transcript for Comprehensive Review: Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook 1/4" Diameter x 50' Long

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number DL24104. This is the Dutton-Lainson hand-winch cable with a safety hook. The cable itself is going to give us a 1/4" diameter. It's going to measure 50 feet long. It's going to have the forged steel hook on this end with the safety latch mechanism that is spring loaded. It's going to prevent accidental disconnecting or unhooking. This is a flexible 7 x 9 galvanized aircraft cable.

It is going to be suitable on Dutton-Lainson Hand Winches, up to a 3,500 pound capacity. It will work for StrongArm electric winches up to 3,000 pounds. It's going to have the safe working load limit for other applications of 1,400 pounds. Nice construction, very strong, and very durable. You can see here where the steel hook swivels around the cable.

Dutton-Lainson puts a nice steel plate in there. That's just going to prevent the cable from wearing or fraying. It's going to extend the life of the cable itself. Here on this end, you have the exposed cable end. This is going to be the end that gets anchored to the winch.

That's going to do it for our review of part number DL24104. This is the Dutton-Lainson hand winch cable with a safety hook. Again, you're going to have 50 feet in length. The cable diameter is 1/4". .

great aircraft cable

Cable is better than described. OEM

Looks like a high quality cable and the packaging was good.

I installed this on my Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch P/N DL11001. Both are in my 20 foot enclosed trailer in case I have to pull in a vehicle that won't run. The winch cable worked perfectly when I pulled my 3000lb tractor into the trailer as a test. I am pleased with this purchase. Jameson assisted me in picking out this product.

by:

It is a great item pulling a race car into the trailer. Its holding up well and doing what it supposed too.

by:

I love it George - very well made - I sprayed the cable I got with it - with lithium grease and after being outdoors for most of the year on my trailer it looks like new still! The worm gear set up with my high speed Milwaukee Fuel hammer drill (great torque - pro drill) works great.I use it to haul a small drift boat up and down steep inclines (drift boat for rivers - fishing) and it works well. I also added corrosion X grease to all of the winch's moving parts - New England weather is a good test for it.

Hand winch is strong, larger than expected, and built pretty heavy duty. One thing to note, the pawl (clicker) is only one sided, so it won't hold the load when letting cable out. It would be nice if it had an extra little tab to allow cranking in, cranking out, and neutral (line pull out) positions.

Also, I'm new to winches, but kind of wish it had a clutch on the cable to keep tension on the cable spool. When nothing is on the line, the tension on the spool unravels, causing the cable go all over the place, the first time i used it, I slightly pinched the cable (I had half the line payed out, and the slack on that part got bunched up when I started pulling in)

I went with a cable instead of strap so that I could use a snatch block pulley if i ever needed extra power, and also ordered a cable twice as long as what I needed to allow for looping back (using it on a utility/car trailer)

Looking back I should have went with the shorter cable so that the line would be all the way out when starting to winch. I might cut down the cable to a shorter length and eventually replace it with a strap. Another drawback i found with the cable is that it tends to wander all over the drum back over itself if you aren't careful causing a tangled mess, but I guess that happens on the power winches too.

Another accessory I wish they had was a heavy waterproof drawstring bag to slip over the winch when not in use. I made a removable pedestal using 2" receiver tube, so I plan to keep the winch indoors. but I really should grease up the cable and it would be nice to have a cover. (Might try to make a bag or have one made)

Overall I'm satisfied and the winch itself more than met my expectations. I was able to easily pull a 2003 Grand cherokee up the ramps onto my trailer with one hand and single line.

by:

This winch has a lot of power, very smooth operation. It works great with my 1/2in battery powered drill. cable always winds perfect and tangle free. I use it to pull my 16ft jon boat out of the water on a makeshift ramp. the boat and motor is around 1000 lbs. its a very high quality winch and its made in the USA.

by:

Everything arrived in nice big box, packed well. Looks like perfect replacement parts. Fast ship time.

So far the cables are fine and I had enough to fit both winches for our application.

by:

eTrailer is awesome. I ordered this product to place a Superwinch Terra cable and rolled on no problem.

by:

Was not easy to install properly - but now does the job.
When the trailer is parked outside cover it up so its not getting rained on - that will extent the life of that cable...

by:

Excellent. I probably could have used a much smaller cable, but it should handle any load I might have in the future.

by:

The product was exactly what I ordered, but the service was really great and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. My purchase arrived a couple days early and the invoice arrived on the day of purchase. I work with many many companies and yours for service is one of the best. Thanks for your help in obtaining this cable. Ken

  • Brake Hand Winch to Replace 1500-lb-Rated Shelby 5352
Some Shelby winch models used a handle that secured to the winch with an Allen key. If this is the type you have then it is possible that the set screw or the post on the winch the handle attaches to is stripped or worn to the point that the handle can no longer crank the winch. While we don't have a repair kit for your Shelby 5352 winch we do have a great replacement winch to match what you have since it is a 1,500 lb brake winch. For that you'd want the Dutton Lainson 1,500 lb Winch...

  • Trailer Winch Recommendation for 26 Foot Long Pontoon Boat
The Dutton-Lainson two speed winch, part # DL15440 would be an excellent choice for a heavier boat like your pontoon. Dutton-Lainson winches offer a good balance between performance and cost. A two speed jack is ideal for getting a heavier boat up onto a trailer, the lower speed works well for getting the boat lined up and started onto the trailer, and the higher gear offers additional mechanical advantage to get the boat pulled up and seated correctly on he trailer. For wire rope you'd...

  • Hand Winch for Use Pulling Floating Boat Dock
Most winches can use a wire rope or nylon strap of up to about 20-feet in length. In your floating dock application where there is not really going to be a lot of weight on the winch an item like the 600-lb-rated Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14125 would do the trick. With it you can use a 50-foot cable # DL24104.

  • Replacing A Shelby 5405 Winch On A 1988 Glastron Boat Trailer
I can definitely point you in the right direction of a new winch. Unfortunately Shelby is no longer in business, so a direct replacement is out of the question. That being said we have come across these Shelby 5405 winches before, and have found the Dutton-Lainson # DL15303 to be an extremely similar 1,400 lb winch. This is a single speed zinc plated winch designed for marine use. It can be used with a 1/4' wire rope like the # DL24100, or with a 2" wide trap like the # DL24260. Plus Dutton-Lainson...

  • Best Replacement for a Shelby Hand Winch 5405
The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL15303 is the replacement that I recommend for your Shelby Hand Winch 5405. These winches both have the same 1,400 lb capacity and overall size. In regards to mounting, most hand winches now use a standard pattern which I have attached a photo of for you. If your winch does not use this same mounting pattern you will need to modify yours to accept this. If you don't already have a strap/wire to use we have these available as part # DL24260 or part...

  • Replacement Winch for Shelby 5352 Hand Winch
I would be happy to give you a recommendation to replace your Shelby 5352 winch, and can understand wanting an exact replacement, but that is an impossibility due to the fact Shelby is out of business. Manufacturers don't make exact replicas of winches, so the best we can offer is a high-quality 1,500 lb hand winch. I do agree with my colleague that a great option for a replacement is the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with Automatic Brake # DL14996. The automatic brake is a really nice feature...

  • Two-Speed Trailer Winch for a 6,400 Pound Cabin Cruiser Boat
The Boat-size-to-winch capacity is generally 2 to 1. With good rollers and short winching distances, increase the ratio to 3 to 1. And with wooden bunks and long winching distances, reduce the ratio to 1 to 1. For example, a 2,200-lb boat generally requires a 1,100-lb winch. If the same boat were winched a short distance with a low incline and with rollers in good condition, it can be safely winched with a 900-lb winch. The best option for that is a winch from Dutton-Lainson: - Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14881 The # DL14881 is a 3,500 lb capacity, 2-speed winch with a manual hand brake.
