DeeMaxx Electric-Over-Hydraulic Actuator vs. Standard Surge Brake Actuators

With the DeeMaxx electric-over-hydraulic actuator, you'll get all the benefits of towing with an electric brake controller while using hydraulic brakes. Because this actuator will activate according to the settings you have chosen for your brake controller (sold separately), you will have more control over when and how the trailer brakes engage. Depending on the features of your brake controller, you may be able to control both the rate and intensity with which the trailer's brakes activate. You can also use the manual override on your brake controller, which allows you to engage the trailer brakes without having to apply the brakes in your vehicle. And perhaps most impressive, if you have a proportional brake controller, the brakes will be activated with an intensity that matches the braking speed and power of your rig.

This pump-and-motor-based system increases response time compared with surge-type actuators because the trailer brakes are triggered when you apply the brakes in the tow vehicle, as opposed to when the trailer pushes against the hitch ball. This not only gives you faster, more efficient braking, but it also eliminates the pushing sensation that occurs in setups that use standard surge brake actuators.

Electric-over-hydraulic actuators also allow you to activate the brakes when reversing down an incline, such as a boat ramp. Having the ability to brake in reverse gives you more control and prevents wear on your tow vehicle.

The DeeMaxx Difference

When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. DeeMaxx addresses this problem by incorporating drainage holes in the hat section of each vented rotor to provide even more ventilation than other brands. Combining these holes with the conventional venting allows DeeMaxx brakes to disperse heat faster. They're also able to shed moisture better, leading to less internal corrosion. The result is cooler-running, longer-lasting brakes that offer consistent performance.

DeeMaxx brakes are the only trailer brakes to satisfactorily pass the high standards of the SAE J2681 brake test. This test is designed to evaluate the friction performance of automotive brakes, so DeeMaxx's passing grade should tell you just how well made these products are.

The patented design of the caliper mounting bolt and sleeve makes installation easier while ensuring that the sleeves stay in place within the caliper. In addition, the side-support design of the caliper mounting bracket puts all of the weight on the bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.

DeeMaxx brakes perform well even in the most demanding environments, which is one of the many reasons why they are preferred by law enforcement agencies like the Texas State Patrol, U.S. Border Patrol, and U.S. Coast Guard.

Great for Campers and Boat Trailers

If you own a trailer, you know that rust and corrosion will eventually creep up no matter where you tow, especially if your equipment doesn't have any kind of protective coating or plating. But if you tow your camper or trailer in the Midwest during the winter, or if you ever launch your boat in brackish water, you'll need even more protection because of the salt you'll likely encounter.

disc brake with signs of heavy rust and corrosion

The Maxx coating on the rotors, calipers, and brackets in this kit helps to ensure that DeeMaxx brakes don't end up looking like the one pictured above. It offers great corrosion protection, even with occasional use in freshwater and saltwater. Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount of time it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. Zinc plating typically begins to deteriorate after about 100 hours. Dacromet usually lasts for around 300 to 400 hours. DeeMaxx's Maxx coating lasts for more than 1,000 hours in the salt spray test.

The environment this test creates is much harsher than anything you'll ever experience in your journeys, but it provides a testament to how well DeeMaxx brakes resist rust and corrosion.

If you're living the salt life full-time or you live right on the coast, you'll probably want to invest in something that offers even more protection, like DeeMaxx kits that include stainless steel components for the ultimate in corrosion resistance.

Get a Safer, More Comfortable Ride

Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.

Save Time and Money

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.

side-by-side comparison of an electric drum brake and a hydraulic disc brake

Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.

close-up image of DeeMaxx disc brake caliper parts

The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. And the caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.
instructions on how to bleed brakes laser etched into the back of a DeeMaxx disc brake caliper

DeeMaxx also has simple instructions for bleeding the brakes laser-etched on the back of the calipers. This convenient time saver means you'll always have the guidance you need on hand when the time comes for maintenance.

All-in-one Brake Replacement

DeeMaxx's integral brake kits combine the brake hub and rotor into a single cast iron piece. Unlike a slip-on assembly, the 1-piece setup makes installation easier because the hub and the rotor are combined . However, this can lead to some extra costs when replacing parts. If either the hub or the rotor needs to be replaced further down the road, the entire piece will be replaced.

Generally, we recommend replacing the brake pads and the rotors at the same time. When you mix and match new parts with used ones, you may save money in the short term, but this has been known to cause problems in the long term, such as uneven stopping power, brake bedding and hot spots. Always confirm that your rotors are in good condition with no rust, corrosion, or grooves before deciding to replace only the brake pad or only the rotor. And always replace parts on both sides of the same axle for balanced braking power.

Video Transcript for The Low-Down on the DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit w/ Actuator for Tandem Axle Trailers

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we take a look at the DeeMaxx 13 inch hub and rotor disc brake kit with the electric over hydraulic actuator for 7,000 pounds tandem axle trailers. These have a 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now, this kit here will let you upgrade your tandem axle trailer from drum to disc brakes for superior performance. It will include everything I have laid out here on the tables, and we're gonna go through the parts.

It'll start with you get 4 one-piece hub and rotors, and the bearing, races are pre-installed into the rotors. Now, the bearings, the seals, the caps, all the lug nuts you can see on the table here, those are all included. And if you do want the part numbers for all those, we do list them on the product page. The four calipers right here with the pads and the mounting brackets, two on each end there, the electric over hydraulic actuator. And then if you notice on this, then we have all the lines, hydraulic lines and fittings that are necessary and they do use rubber hoses, which will meet the DOT and SAE standards, and they're easier to install than the rigid steel lines.

Now, we mentioned that electric-over-hydraulic actuator, want to zoom in on that, this is to activate your brakes when your brake controller signals to apply the brakes. The maximum output pressure on this is 1,600 PSI. What's nice with this actuator, there's no lag or delay, so it gives you more braking control than a surge-type actuator, and this is compatible with most in-cab brake controllers. Now, the brake controller's not included. Now, this great kit is great for towing and launching your boat in fresh or brackish water.

It uses corrosion-resistant Maxx coat finish on the hub, the rotors, the calipers. And those mounting brackets, they all have a salt spray rating of over a thousand hours. Now, on the rotors themselves, they have these holes in the hat section of the rotor and that allows for water to drain easily, further minimizing corrosion. This kit will deliver smooth, even braking with the fast response time. And the brake pads that are in these calipers, they are Kevlar brake pads.

They'll dissipate the heat and resist wear and tear extremely well, and they do use 2 1/2 inch diameter stainless steel pistons to provide fast, responsive braking. They also have laser-etched instructions. I'm gonna try to zoom in on one of those. Right here, you can see they do laser-etched instructions on the calipers themselves, takes the guesswork out of installing and bleeding the brakes. Now, this does require minimal maintenance, saves you time and money. It is a one-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, reduces the chance of uneven wear. They are vented design, that'll dissipate the heat, and they are a high quality auto-grade material. Application for this kit is 7,000 pound tandem axles. The bolt pattern we mentioned is 8 on 6 1/2 inches. The wheel stud diameter on these is a half inch. The diameter on the rotor if you measured it would actually measure about 13 1/8 inches, and it is designed to fit the five bolt brake mounting flange configuration. But that's gonna do it for the review on this DeeMaxx 13 inch hub and rotor disc brake kit with the electric over hydraulic actuator for 7,000 pound tandem axle trailers.

The parts themselves are great, but the packaging was AWFUL. A big box with two rotors in it, with loose calipers and pads banging around inside with no additional packaging material to cushion these parts. Disappointed in the etrailer customer service team, who passed the blame to the shippers. I'm sorry, but the shippers didn't package these...etrailer did.

Product was as expected, good quality braking system, installed easily in about 1-2 hours per wheel. Shipping and ordering was quick and easy. Time will tell more after installing on my fresh water boat trailer.
Unfortunately, it did not clear my 15” wheels properly, as indicated in the product description. I found by adding a 1/4” wheel spacer, that was just enough to get the clearance needed to prevent the calipers from rubbing on my 15” rims. (I have also seen others say that they used a grinder to take about 1/4” off the caliper body to get them to clear). This is the only reason for 4/5 stars.

rapid delivery, boxed well and brakes look of good quality. E trailer is so easy to order from and responsive.

by:

Good product. Great service. Some damage occurred during shipping, but replacement parts were shipped free of charge.

by:

Heavy duty mounting brackets and calipers. Very high quality.

by:

Excellent brakes for my boat trailer.

by:

WOrks very good. Fit on a 15" rim were not good. The site said any 15, 16 or larger. The calibers drag on the inside of rims. I had to choose to go larger size rims but did not want to go larger because the hight I was at lauching boat now. Called tech support, they worked wirh manufacture and was told to grind dowm edge or caliber. It has extra metal from mold at factory. I did about 1/4 inch end to end and all is good with about 1/8 clearaance now.

by:

The package fit my boat trailer perfectly. Installation was fairly easy and I am ver pleased with the product. thanks

DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit - 10" Rotor - 5 on 4-1/2 - Maxx Coating - 3,500 lbs came fast and well packed. Thank you

by:

I previously purchased Deemax rotors, calipers with pads and wouldn’t fit my mounting brackets on my venture trailer. I called Stacy at customer service at etrailer and she worked with me and my issues to return the previous shipment (awaiting credit) . She had me buy 2 sets of the brake kits by Deemax which is for 4 wheels of rotors, calipers with pads and mounting brackets and they are great . The brakes and rotors on my trailer were shot, rusted beyond repair and I’ve started to tear them out and replace them all , the rusted bolts are they worst I’ve dealt with- see the photo for the look of the new rotors , bracket and still installing calipers.

by:
