Video Transcript for Beginner’s Guide to Installing the Bestop TrekStep on a 2022 Ram 2500

What's up everybody. It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checking out the Bestop TrekStep. Is gonna be a step used to get into the back of your truck easier. And then we're gonna be installing it on a 2022 Ram 2,500. Let's check it out.

The step's gonna make it much easier to get in the back of your truck when you need to. You can just use your foot, kick it down like that or when you're done with it, you can kick it back up too. It doesn't hit the bumper. It's nice you don't have to use your hands at all. So if your hands are full and you're either trying to climb up here, throw something in the back of the truck or get something from the back of the truck you don't have to worry about climbing down and then hitting that.

You can just kick it up, goes into place comes right back down, just as easy. And again, just makes that step up a lot easier going from step to step to get in the back. Even with the tailgate down, too, you have to come at it from the side, but it definitely helps not to try and go from the ground to the tailgate anymore. You can just go here, step up, up, in it. Some nice things about the step being mounted underneath of the frame of your vehicle is that you don't have to worry about finding it.

It's not like a stool you have to get out before you get back there. It's always there and ready to use. But it also doesn't take up the hitch. So sometimes you get that step, you put it here to help you step up into the back of your truck, but that would use up your hitch and you'd have to swap that out with a ball mount, then you need to use that. This way, the hitch is wide open for whatever accessories you wanna use.

And the step's always gonna be right there. 'Nother nice thing is that it stores up by the bumper right here. So it's not gonna be in the way of any hitch mounted accessories. It's gonna be a non-skid pad here, on the step. I can definitely feel with my hand. I can get that grip on there, and with a foot when I step on there, I feel that drag and that grip. So I don't feel like I'm gonna slip off there which is good for the elements. You can even use if it's raining. Don't worry about slipping off there easily. I think the step is good size too. There's plenty of room on there for my foot. I can get my whole foot on there. I don't have to worry about it just being on the edge or anything like that. So I got a good footing on when I'm standing up there and good balance. Now, when it comes to the installation, that's pretty easy too. It only works for trucks with single exhaust. So keep that in mind, but installation isn't too bad using existing bolts, you don't have to drill any new holes in the bottom of your truck. It didn't take me too long. Check out how I did it. We're underneath the truck on the driver's side here, towards the back. First thing we're gonna need to do is move this wire harness. The assembly is gonna need to go here. So all we're gonna do is pull on that to pop it out and then we're gonna zip tie it up here to the other wire harness. So we'll just work it out like that. And then zip tie it up here up, up and outta the way. The assembly is gonna need to go about here. So you see that how much we need to move this wire harness outta the way. So it needs to be closer up to the top. Now with our wire harness zip tied up here and out of the way, I can show you the body mount goes right here. So now we have plenty of room to still work. So what I'm gonna do next is remove these two bumper bolts and we'll run 'em right back in with the body mount in place. We're gonna go ahead and remove those bumper bolts. There's one. I got this one loose with the impact and back it out with my hand, 'cause now we're gonna hold up the body assembly and attach that to the frame. So just replace those bolts. But before we put those bolts in, it's recommended we use a little bit of Loctite that's included. We're gonna do some pre-assembly. What we're gonna do is we're gonna take the step assembly here. This is, you want this facing this way so that it brings the step out towards the back of the truck. Then we're gonna have our spacer put into place. We're gonna make sure you line up the holes correctly. You want this hole matching up with this hole on the step assembly, cause that's gonna make it easier when you go to attach that. Now the body mount is gonna go right here and attach to the bumper underneath the vehicle. But we'll get that in a second. Now the instructions aren't super clear on what you need to do but I found an easier way to do this. So I wanna make sure I pass it on to you. It's gonna be easier to attach the spacer first. We're gonna take our M6 18 millimeter screw. We're gonna put that in first. So add a little bit of Loctite to the end. So we're supposed to do that for all the connections, all the fasteners, sorry. And then on the inside, see if I can't do this and show you at the same time, we'll drop that in with the washer and line up that hole and get it started. So it needs to go in there. I'll get it hand tight and you can come back with an Allen tool that'll go up through the hole in the top to help you tighten it down. That's gonna make it a lot easier than installing this portion first 'cause then the two bolts will be in the way. Already been there and done that. So this is gonna save you a bunch more time. We're gonna take our longer bolts out. Add that Loctite. We're gonna run those through the top, put them in place. So we're gonna need to put our body mount in there as well. We need it this way. Drop the bolt down and in there. Make sure it lines up on the inside too. And then start tying it down. I'm gonna get it hand tight. So it kind of holds itself. And then I'll come back and add the second one. Now I'm gonna lift the assembly up and attach the body mount and everything back to the bumper. We're gonna reuse the hardware we used earlier. Adding some Loctite back on there. Now you might not be able to see much with me putting the first one on, but I'll be able to get outta the way once it's holding itself up. Now we'll line up our second one and get that started too. We can see this a little bit clearer. Kind of pushing up on this side to line up those holes and get that one hand started. That one's going in pretty good. So it's gonna help hold it in place so I can come back and tighten it down. Make sure it's got a nice hold. Now we're gonna bring the arm out so that we can attach our step. And you see it's got a sliding plate here with the screw holes in it. You wanna line that up about there get the step as centered as you can before you add the hardware. We can actually put that in there somewhat loosely to help adjust it back and forth before we tighten it down by hand. Now with that lined up, it looks centered to me, run this in by hand and come back with an Allen key to finish tightening it down. But this is just gonna help hold it in place. We're gonna adjust the step back and forth. You see, now that I got this one in there I can slide it back and forth and the holes are still lined up. Now with that tightened down and the step on there we can see it works just fine. And then, I'm sorry it comes up here. Does not hit the vehicle so we don't have to use any spacers or anything. We're done. Overall, think the step's a great addition to the truck. Definitely makes it easier climbing into the back of the bed that need to either grab something right here or just getting in there to mess with the fifth wheel is gonna make everything a lot easier and not take up that hitch. So that's great for other accessories. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out. I hope this helps..

The 2” spacer was missing from the original package. I called customer service and advised them of it. I was ensured that the spacer would be shipped immediately. When I received the new package it only had the bolts for the space, but no spacer. I called again and of course was told it would be mailed. I’m currently waiting for the third package to arrive.

2022 Dodge Ram Pickup

looks and works great. Easy to install. This new 2022 dodge ram 2500 is 2 inch higher than my last truck. This step made a big different in getting both in and out of the bed.

Ordered step on Tuesday, arrived on Wednesday, installed on Friday. Perfect fit, much better to get into back of pickup. Easy to install took about 30 minutes. Work great, looks nice

Even though this order was very delayed, customer service kept us updated. This product was fairly easy to install and very helpful when hitching to your RV.

Purchased the Trek Step for my 2018 Ram 2500 Mega Cab. It took my about fifteen minutes to install the step following the instruction provided. All mounting parts were included and only needed a few common tools. The step extends and retracts easily and feels secure while stepping up and descending the truck bed. The step is made of aluminum and feels to be made strong. Recommended if you need a little help stepping into your high truck bed.

by:

I have no opinion on the step. My issue was shipping and customer service, so I'll leave my opinion on that blank since that wasn't asked for. Hopefully the customer we got this for likes it as it will be the last thing we order from this site. Thanks.

by:

Awesome addition and very much appreciated! The step gets comments every time someone sees me use it, and I do my best to send them your way to add it to their own vehicles!

by:

I’ve had this step for over a year and it has worked great. It still works as it did the first day I put it on. It looks like new too. It was easy to install. If you don't have a step assist to get into the bed of your truck this will do the trick. Well worth the money.

by:

Great product and fast shipping. The TrekStep parts were easy to put together. My only comment is the problem I had trying to bolt it onto the bumper frame. One of the bolt holes in the bumper frame was to small for the bolts that with the TrekStep so I had to drill it out.Trying to get it installed onto the frame was not going good so I took it to my mechanic who was kind enough to put my truck on the hoist and install it for me.

This is a quality product. It is solidly manufactured and functions exactly as it should. Install was fairly easy except for one minor flaw which is the reason I only gave four stars. I can now get into the bed of my truck with the flick of a foot instead of jumping on the tailgate and rolling in. The kit comes with spacers to allow you to adjust how far you want the step from the bumper. The problem is if you don’t want to use the spacers the cap screw threads are too short and the screw will not seat. This is a problem that hasn’t been addressed as I read other reviews that mentioned it and my truck is a 2018. I solved the issue by using one of the spacers and adding an extra washer which allowed the screw to be tightened.

by:

The TrekStep is well made and works great. It was purchased to make getting in/out of the bed with the tailgate down easier and safer. I only gave it 4 stars because of some unnecessary difficulty installing the it.

The provided M6-1.0 x 75 mm Socket Cap Screw is only partially threaded. As a result, unless one or both of the 1/4" Spacers are used, the Cap Screw will not seat against the Mounting Bracket as indicated in step 3 of the installation instructions (see attached photo).

I wanted the step to be as close as possible to the bumper in the retracted position so I had to install the Spacers on top of the Mounting Bracket instead of between the Mounting Bracket and Linkage Assembly as indicated in step 7 of the installation instructions.

If the Cap Screw had been threaded like the Hex Head Bolts, I would not have had to use the Spacers like I did to make it fit.

by:

Installed on a 2014 GMC 1500 Sierra w/o the step bumper. Installation was longer than the instructions indicted, but that was due to the manufacturer's bolts. The bolts for installing on the frame should be 1/4' long due to the design of the step. It was tough getting the nuts threaded. Would be better if the bolts were the same as OEM bumper fasteners. Other than that installation was easy.

Reviews only lets you upload one photo???

Step works as advertised and I am pleased with it so far, but I will have to wait and see our it weathers a Canadian winter in Manitoba. (Road salt, slush, snow, sand, etc....)

by:

Great product quality worth the price. But installation is somewhat difficult for 1 person to do while laying out in the driveway. Not everyone has access to a lift. Took some doing but it's finally installed & in use.

by:

Great product! I call it my "old man step". When the tailgate is down on my Tundra, it was difficult to climb in and out of the bed. This step did the trick. It took me about an hour to install. It looks good and folds away neatly.

by:

Purchased as "used" or "damaged" from etrailer for a significantly discounted price. Arrived in good condition, other than some wear and tear on the box, everything else looked like new and was complete. Installation was relatively simple, 30 - 45 minutes including several adjustment increments. Overall I am well pleased with this step, it certainly makes getting into the bed of my RAM 2500 much easier! I have made quite a few purchases from etrailer over the last several years and find their product choices, website, technical information, shipping, and customer service to be truly superior.

by:

Bought this as a step for my 2018 Ram 2500. The bed of this truck is higher off the ground than I remember my F250 being. You can climb into it (not a pretty sight), but this step makes it way easier for me (and everyone else) to get in with ease. I'm one year in and it seems to be working as well as it did the first day. No rust or change in the spring action of the step.

  • Is There A Retractable Step Available For The Cab Side Of The Bed On A 2024 Ram 2500
Hey Jason, There currently isn't a truck bed step that would mount at the cab side of the bed but there is the Bestop TrekStep - Rear Mounted Truck Step # BE67HR, which would mount at the tailgate end of the bed. You could take it to a local machine/fabricator shop and have them swap out the top mounting bracket for something that would work with your desired location and get it mount to the frame.

I have another option for you, but the Bestop TrekStep # B7530715 you were looking at is only confirmed to fit select Chevy/GMC trucks. For your 2021 Ram 3500 Long Bed you will need to go with the # BE84ER if you want the step on the passenger side, or the # BE67HR if you want the step on the driver side. Keep in mind these are only confirmed to fit the Crew Cab and Mega Cab models. I included a video of the # BE84ER for you to take a look at.
