Video Transcript for Comprehensive Review: Bulldog Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch

What's up everybody, Adam here with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the Bulldog Cast Adjustable Trailer Coupler. So this is gonna be for your two and 5/16th inch ball. If you don't have one, make sure you get one and make sure you confirm the size that you do have if you have one, make sure it's gonna work with this. This is gonna be for some of the heavier duty applications. Gonna have a capacity of 14,000 pounds.

It's made of cast, nice powder coated finish. So it's not gonna rust away over time. And this is going to need to fit into a channel of three inches. So just make sure we measure on the inside here. And this is three inches.

There is a little bit of play, not a whole lot. So if you did have a washer, you can maybe put it in there and that'll kind of get it a little bit tighter. So you're not gonna be hearing this, whenever you're going down the road. We do have some hardware that's included, both the bolt and nylon locknut, two of them, and it's nice and that it comes with them 'cause some of them don't and all you need is a 24 millimeter socket to wrench them down. This does have a wedge style latch.

And so this latch is not gonna be a latch that's gonna stay up on its own. It's spring loaded. So if you did wanna upgrade to anything, there is a couple different ones that we have. This is the one we took off. So this is an easy latch.

So I like the easy latches, it's definitely gonna be an upgrade because you go up to your trailer, you open this up, it'll stay open. And then the second that you go down on the ball, I can't really do it right now, but it'll snap in a place for you. So you don't have to do it manually. One thing you're gonna need for your trailer for the coupler, actually, is just a little pin. So once you clip it down, you do want to put this and insert into this little hole right here. This is this one's a little long. So if you really wanted something that's super super tight against it. It's about an inch and a quarter from one edge to the other. So definitely grab one of those. If you don't have one, it is a necessity. Whenever you're hauling around your trailer we just wanna make sure you're nice and safe. We do have a lot of options of that on our website. And if you don't have a channel like this we also sell that as well. You will have to weld it on just make sure you have a good welder or somebody who knows how to weld to do that. When it comes to this, I think the upgrade is definitely gonna be the easy latch, but there are some other options that are gonna stay open. Kind of like this one right here. So you can pull this up and then whenever it's done you can go ahead and just fold it back in. Once you lower it down on the trailer, I think this will be an upgrade as well, but I'm not really a fan of this latching system compared to the easy latch. So if you want my recommendation easy latch, it's better, quicker, simpler. But if this is something that is gonna get the job done, you don't need anything fancy. It's gonna be a really good entry level option to just get a nice high quality heavy duty coupler on the front of your trailer. The overall lengths about nine and a quarter inches. And then from the center of the mounting holes to the farthest point it's about eight and a quarter inches. And then just the amount of length we're gonna add to our trailer. It's about seven. And that'll do it for a look at the Bulldog Cast Adjustable Trailer Coupler..

Fits well. Excellent follow-thru by tra iler.

Purchased this coupler to replace the original coupler that was worn out. The new coupler performs well and solved the clunking with every stop and start of the old coupler.

by:

Nice heavy duty. Adjustable Coupler fits great. The lever to lock it is the kind I prefer. Its easy to open and close.
Thanks, Stephanie.

This is a substantial ball hitch. I haven't installed it yet since I intend to paint it. The gray paint on it seems to be only a primer and it isn't adhering well to the metal. So I wire-wheeled the paint off. That was a quick job--the gray came off easily. Some lacquer thinner will clean the metal and then the metal primer will adhere well. Then I'll paint it to match the CornPro trailer. This hitch can be locked with a regular lock, or so it appears. I haven't tried it yet to be sure. The ball socket is simply the rough casting, like all the rest of the hitch, so I hope it won't roughen up the ball. Grade 5 bolts with nylon insert nuts were included. The trailer had grade 8 bolts. So I will keep an eye on the wear. I would rather replace worn bolts every few years than have grade 8 bolts wear the softer bolt holes. On a 6,000 GTW trailer, I don't think grade 5 bolts will be sheared off.

After a years use, the ball hitch is fulfilling my needs very well. My concerns proved to be unfounded. A lock with extended shackle works fine. No wear shows on the hitch or the ball. I always feel confident that the hitch will stay secure. My method of painting worked well.

The etrailer staff are the best with working with customers. Part of my order was lost and working with etrailer representative a suitable replacement part was quickly shipped out and charges for the original part list in shipping removed. I am grateful for the concern and interest from etrailer to make sure I was a satisfied customer. Not many companies really work with their customers anymore.

by:

My old hitch is of a thicker metal, kind of surprised with the quality of the new one. I'll probably be ordering the latch kit for the old hitch. Very pleased with the service from your company. Thanks

Thank you, delivered exactly what I ordered, when you said it was to be delivered. Well packaged, couldn’t have been any better. Looking at upgrading my lights and will give you a call

Product was easy to find on the website. The price was good and it was delivered on time.

by:

It was exactly what I was looking for. Great service and quick shipping.

by:

The casting of the hitch s excellent. The closure mechanism appears to be sturdy and parts can be replaced when warn. A better quality paint should be used because it"s all chipped and will be removed and re primed.

by:

Perfect replacement for a worn coupler.

by:

I like the quality. It works so much better than the cheap coupler the trailer came with!

by:

Excellent fit, works well as replacement for previous coupler which failed

I replaced the clam shell coupler on my Big Tex dump trailer with this one and I really like it. So much easier to use.

  • Will the Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler Fit a Trailer Tongue Wider then 3 Inches?
No, it will not sorry. The Demco Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler item # DM16080-95 won't fit a trailer tongue that is wider than 3". Additionally, I do not have a coupler like this that will fit a channel wider then 3". You may be able to use a channel bracket like item # BDAC3000300, weld it to the end of the tongue, and then use the coupler item # BDA256C0317.

If you are looking for just the pin portion of coupler lock # BD580410 I am afraid that it is not available by itself. If you need an actual adjustable coupler then there are several Bulldog adjustable couplers available. We have the following and maybe you can identify the one you need: # BDA256C0317 (14k, 2-5/16 inch ball) # BDA200C0317 (8k, 2 inch ball) # BD028390 (7k, 2 inch ball) # BD028657 (15k, 2-5/16 inch ball) The first two have a wedge latch. • Will An Adjustable Trailer Coupler Help With Clearance On A Horse Trailer With Weight Distribution
If you use the Bulldog Adjustable Trailer Coupler, # BDA256C0317, with the Bulldog Adjustable Channel Bracket, # BDAC3000300, it is adjustable and can raise the coupler height, which could keep the trailer from being level with the vehicle. This will cause problems when hooking up and turning with your weight distribution system. With the coupler being higher it will not allow the spring bars to work properly and distribute the load evenly to the vehicle and the trailer. So the weight distribution...

The Bulldog Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch, part # BDA256C0317, is for a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball. I went out to the warehouse and measured the Bulldog coupler. The two bolts are 5/8 inch bolts and the distance between the upper and lower bolt holes, center-to-center, is 2 inches. The bolt holes do measure 7/8 inch from the center of the bolt holes to the back of the coupler. The width of the coupler actually measured with a digital caliper was 2.843 inches, which is 2-27/32 inches....

  • Do Mounting Bolts in a Channel Coupler Need to be Tight
When mounting a cast head coupler like Bulldog # BDA256C0317 to its mounting channel you will want to torque the mounting bolts to the specification indicated by the manufacturer in the instructions. The torque spec will vary from coupler to coupler. You do not want the head to be loose in the mounting channel; the design of such couplers relies on a firm grip of the coupler head inside the channel to allow it to deliver its rated performance. I have included a link to our range of cast...

  • Trailer Coupler Solution for 4 inch Wide Trailer Tongue
I have a solution for you that would work, but we don't have a traditional-style coupler that will fit over your 4 inch trailer tongue. The straight tongue trailer couplers we offer fit up to 3 inch trailer tongues. You could use an adjustable channel coupler that will weld to the front of your trailer tongue. For a coupler that fits a 2 inch hitch ball, a great option is the Pro Series Adjustable Channel Coupler with Low Latch # PSA200S0303. This coupler offers an 8,000 pound weight capacity....

I had a couple of our couplers measured, but the Bulldog Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch - 2-5/16" Ball - Adjustable Channel - 14,000 lbs # BDA256C0317 ended up being the longest one we currently carry. We do have the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch - 7" Long # HR26, but the use of extenders like this will reduce your tongue weight, up to 1/3 in this case. If you need something longer, you could also go with the Brophy Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches...

We do carry some replacement parts for couplers, however we do not carry replacement parts that would work for the coupler you have provided pictures of. The Bulldog Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch # BDA256C0317 is designed to fit the Bulldog 3" wide adjustable channel bracket like # BDAC3000300. I would refrain from using this coupler with a wider channel bracket than 3" as it will cause the attachment to be loose and the hardware will not properly secure the coupler. If you can let me know how wide your channel bracket is I can source an alternative coupler that will better serve your channel.

Thanks for the photo of your coupler! It looks like it is a Bulldog Cast Head Coupler with Wedge Latch, 2-5/16 inch Ball # BDA256C0317. I spoke with my contact at Bulldog about a coupler lock for your trailer. He said that because of the shape of the # BDA256C0317 coupler, a lock that secures inside the coupler where the ball fits is not ideal.
