Will Brophy Camper Scissor Steps Work for You?

Scissor steps are typically installed on truck campers, but can be attached to your truck's tailgate using a special mounting bracket (TSSB - sold separately). After the initial installation, they're easy to attach when needed and detach for compact storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Brophy Mounting Bracket

The Brophy scissor steps have a single mounting bracket that attaches to either the camper wall or the truck bumper beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available for the mounting bracket on your application that lines up with the doorframe, and measure the width and height. You will need a mounting space at least 18-1/4" wide and 1" tall.

If it turns out you have more space beneath your doorway, there are larger step assemblies available with 24" wide brackets. A full list of the available steps is below.

Once you have an approximation of where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, the spot you chose will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Brophy Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the "mounting point" to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays entry height measurement ranges in the first column. If you determined you need an 18-1/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 24" mounting bracket width, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Find the mounting spot for the bracket on your vehicle
  2. Unfold the steps and attach to the mounting bracket "V" clamps
  3. Place step assembly against camper or bumper

-Make sure assembly is centered beneath the doorway

  4. Mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill
  5. Remove steps from bracket and set aside
  6. Attach the mounting bracket to the camper

-Secure in place with included lag screws

  7. Hook stairs into mounting bracket "V" clamps and extend

Thanks for the great communication. I did receive the product as
described. I actually used this product on my Tacoma truck. I have
parents that are old and they need stairs to get into my truck. I tried
folding plastic steps but didn't work that well. Not too sturdy. I
finally found your product that I thought would work for my use. I
thought I needed the different types of mounting bracket, but didn't
need it. I just riveted the top arm hinge and rested the top of stair
arm on the truck side runners. I also riveted a neoprene pad on the
bottom leg to help stabilize the bottom from slipping. It works great
for what I needed it to do. Here are some pictures.

How did this set of stairs fold up and store? On this truck it looks like they would be sticking out in folded position, if the door was closed.I need this for my Class C RV. Its not very high off the ground and 1 or 2 steps should do it. I have to measure it when I get back home. My assumption is that they would fold up and store underneath the RV like the present dented steel ones are storing or stored before they dented up.Please add some measurements of height when folded up.Thanks!

This particular set does not permanently hang underneath the RV. There is a bracket that attaches to the frame of the RV. When you arrive at the campsite, you pull out the stairs, unfold and set them into the bracket. When it's time to go, you remove the steps, fold them up and store them in the RV. The steps that stay underneath are Pull-Out and Electric Steps. I have added links to these categories below.

I have an enclosed patio with a raised (~23") deck built on a concrete slab. Occasionally I need to access the patio via the fence gate. These steps provide an excellent solution for outside patio entry as they can be easily removed and installed when required. They do not encroach on the patio area. They can be stored in the garage for winter. They are light weight but strong.

After a year of use I continue to enjoy the use of the stairs. Its been a great solution to my patio situation.

Summary: Excellent quality. Purchased for weight saving (60 lbs) and reduced drag (1 sq. ft. side of steps supplied with trailer {large wind drag} eliminated).

Our GMC Acadia and KZ Escape car/trailer combination is weight and horsepower sensitive, but my wife didn't want to drive a "growly" diesel truck for daily trips. The GMC is 5000 lb towing max with a 6 cyl gas engine. We were a bit surprised by the 80 lb. steel steps which came with the trailer and I noticed that the side facing the headwind was a square foot in area which was probably causing significant drag.

So we purchased the etrailer steps. They are 12 pounds and have no wind resistance. With these steps we have noticed better speed response and better hill climbing.

Note: I should have purchased the 3 step unit instead of the 2 step unit. I failed to account for non-level campsites which can increase the total step height required when the trailer is leveled (ground/front/low). So notice in the photo, I changed the mounting, placing the "on trailer" bracket on the bottom of the trailer, and putting screws into the stair tops to eliminate the stair top swivel.

Overall: I highly recommend. Don't discount the weight and drag of the "standard" trailer steps.

These steps worked very well in my application. Needed 2 steps to get into the boat from the dock and found these steps to be very stable. Purchase a extra mounting bracket, so the steps can be mounted on either side of the boat, depending which side the dock is on. The steps also close down when not in use, so the can be stored out of the way when not needed. The mounting bracket is very strong and will hold the steps from moving.
The only reason I didn't give them a excellent rating is because the lower edge of the aluminum steps were left very sharp and should have been filed or rounded off from the factory. I was made awake of this from another review and was prepared to file the sharp edge round. The manufactures should read these reviews and address these concerns.

by:

This is a great solution for our horse trailer problem. It is easy to deploy and should do the job nicely. I did have some issues with the lag screws twisting apart so I was only able to get 2 installed and I used 2 #12 drill screws to make up the difference.

by:

Steps seem very sturdy and easy to collapse and retract. Very happy with them.

by:

I must say that this product is very well made.
These steps solved my problem...now have 3 even steps to enter trailer.

by:

I use these on my work trailer everyday, myself and my clients have had no issues getting into the trailer. Great Product!!

I received the steps yesterday and installed this morning (took less than an hour) on our 2019 Rockwood 2503S (back door). I like the steps, especially the fact that they can be removed while traveling. Our previous steps were badly damage when we hit a "humped" railroad crossing.

I do have a few comments though:

1. The two step unit is only available in 18" wide. A 24" wide unit would have worked much better for us.

2. Lag bolts are provided for screwing the mounting bracket to the space below the door. The way travel trailers are built nowadays, I seriously doubt if there is anything there to screw into. I mounted a piece of 2x2 aluminum angle to the frame below the door (used the mounting bolts from the original steps) then bolted the step support bracket to that using four 1/4"x1" bolts, flat washers and locknuts.

3. As other reviewers have noted, the edges of the steps themselves a quite sharp. A little filing/sanding wouldn't be amiss.

They are great except I still would prefer wider.

by:

The screws that come with the steps and that are supposed to fit into a 5/32" hole in the frame did not fit. The first screw broke in two while screwed into the pre-drilled 5/32" hole, according to the instructions. Even, a larger hole, 3/16", did not accommodate the screws. Ultimately I decided to drill 1/4" holes and fit machine screws with nylon hex jam nuts. The ideal position for the step support bracket was impossible to use as frame bolts were in its place. The Camper that the steps went on is a Winnebago Minnie Drop, factory equipped with a one step ladder that is too high for us, so we opted for this two step ladder. Finally I got it all to fit but it took much effort and some creativity. The steps are fine but the attachment to the camper leaves much to be desired.

We ordered the bracket with three aluminum stairs for our Teardrop Camper. They came quickly and were exactly as we needed and had been shown on the website.
But our bracket was slightly bent and we feared that the "wiggle' was a little too much.
We emailed trainer and got a reply within the same day. The customer service was EXCELLENT!
Everyone that handled our return and resend was professional, prompt and totally understanding. No questions asked.
I would certainly buy from them again in the future.

We love the stairs. Haven’t taken the camper out much due to some other things happening but would recommend them to anyone interested in a removable stair for a camper. Best set up, we think. Your site was great and we appreciated your help.

Just what I needed to get out of my camper when I have an extended trailer hitch on, which I also bought from eTrailer. Works great and fits great.

Still working great!

by:

Although I haven't used the trailer much after installing the step, I am very happy with the purchase and installation. After I installed the step I did some upgrades inside my trailer. The step made going in and out of my trailer so much easier than the milk crate I was using. It folds up and stores very cleanly in the front of the trailer next to the door where I can open the door, reach in and unstrap the step, fold it out and clip it on the trailer. It is very convenient. Much friendlier to these 70 year old knees.

by:

Have made several purchases this year and they are always fast and usually the lowest price. Will continue to look at etrailer first for my future purchases.

The folding stairs are much better than the attached steps that came with mycamper. I did have to fabricate a bracket under the camper to attach themto that could be a little to hard for most people to do. Other than thatthey are excellent steps.

by:

Knocked the steel stairs under our truck camper off twice driving on rough terrain, then bought these stairs; they don’t hang down, 10x lighter, and don’t rust. I will never use steel stairs again. They install in less than 10 min and work great.

by:

Great step but mounting bracket is rusting, should have been stainless steel or aluminum. Would have given it 5 star otherwise.

by:

The product is excellent but my review is slightly poor. It is a good step, strong and well built but, the corners and edges are razor sharp and will cut your toes wide open if you are barefoot and touch one of them. I know, I did it and opened up the top of my big toe. I removed the step and spent the next hour or so filing down all the sharp edges and now all is good.

by:

I won’t be able to put this on my camper until it thaws out in April....but it is a great product as we had an identical one on our last truck camper and it was fantastic, convenient, easy to handle and sturdy. We could just pop it on and off as needed. I took the factory supplied step arrangement off our new Lance and will install this instead. It is soooo much better.

by:

Easy install, good heavy mounting bracket. Steps are sturdy, quality product.

by:

Does a great job on my car trailer. The closed position catch is too stiff, and not made of spring material, so is not useful. That's the only thing keeping it from a 5-star rating.

by:

I got the aluminum steps and am very happy with them.
They are well made, fold up small and are light weight.
I mounted mine offset to the left side of the door so I would still have access to the end of the counter top from outside.
Oh, and the free shiping was super fast!!

by:

Excellent customer service after the sa le.

by:

The steps are beautiful and they are installed. We will enjoy them very much as an aid to entering our truck camper. They are sturdy, much nicer than the ones we have had before. They are just like described.

by:

Etrailers customer service and products are always top notch! Very happy with the quality of the steps. Easy process overall.

I took a look at each of the scissor steps we carry and there are not any available that have the range of 18" to 26" you are looking for. You are not going to want to use the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS23, which have a range of 24" to 30" when your door is 18" off the ground so your best option would be to use both the # AS23 steps as well as the Brophy # AS02 which have a height range of 18" to 23". • Why are Brophy Aluminum Scissor Steps # AS23 Not Suitable for Permanent Installation
Brophy does not recommend their Aluminum Scissor Steps # AS23 for permanent installation due to their height when retracted.
