Video Transcript for Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs Review

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at trailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at the tandem axle trailer hanger kit for double-eye springs. Now, this hanger kit will allow you to attach four leaf springs to your trailer frame. Now, the leaf springs we do sell separately on our website. This kit will basically include everything laid out here on the table.

It includes all the hangers you need, the equalizers, the shackle straps, the shackle bolts, and the shackle nuts all included. Now, this is designed for use on trailers that have tandem 2,000-pound to 7,000-pound axles. And it does not include the components for mounting the axle to the springs. Now, we're gonna go through all these just to show you the size of 'em. We'll start with, let me just zoom in a little bit here and we're gonna measure 'em.

We'll start with the front and rear hangers, that'll be the smaller. There's four of those. And basically, these are 2 1/2 inches tall, and when you measure the hanger, a hanger is always measured from the top to the center of this bolt hole down here. So if we put a ruler on it from the center to the very top, it's gonna be right at 2 1/2 inches tall. And again, that's for the two front and the two rear hangers.

Now, the two taller ones, those are the center hangers that the equalizers will connect to. Those, the same way you measure from the center of this hole to the top. So if we put a ruler on it, you're gonna be right at 4 1/4 inches tall for the two center hangers. Now, the equalizers, there's two of those right here. These are curved equalizers.

And again, the length of 'em will be measured center of this hole to the center of this hole. So if we put a ruler on it, there's your 7 3/4 inches length for the curved equalizers. The shackle straps, there's eight of those. Those again, center to center on the bolt holes. So if we measure it, it's right at 2 5/8 inches long on the shackle straps. The shackle bolt comes with 14 of those. Those are gonna be three inches long and they're measured from the bottom of the head to the end of the bolt. So there's your three-inch measurement. The diameter on these bolts are 9/16 of an inch, and then it comes with the 14 9/16-size diameter lock nuts. But that should do it for the review on the tandem axle trailer hanger kit for the double-eye springs..

  • How to Determine Hanger Spacing on a Tandem Axle Trailer
It depends on the leaf springs you are using. Basically you will need to mock it all up before permanently installing anything on the trailer. Generally speaking the distance between hangers would likely be 24-3/4 inches on center to 29-1/2 inches on center but again it depends on the springs being used. These are just rough guide lines and really the only way to get the right spacing for a given trailer is to mock everything up and adjust as needed. Also, even though you asked about hanger...

  • How to Find the Correct Replacement Equalizer
The Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double Eye Springs # APT5 may have the correct equalizer but you will need to measure the current equalizer to find out. The length from the center of the left-most eye to the center of the right-most eye of your equalizer needs to be the same as the 7-3/4 inch measurement in this kit. Since you said the shackles are hitting the frame I recommend using a kit with a center hanger that is longer than the 3-3/4 inch hanger that comes with Kit # APT5....

  • Why is Center Hanger Longer for Tandem Axle Trailer Hanger Kit
The center hangers in the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit # APT8 that you recently purchased are indeed longer. This is actually pretty common for tandem axle trailers. The reason for the extra length on the middle hanger is related to the shackle straps of the equalizer. You want this hanger to be a bit longer to compensate for how the shackle straps move the spring higher up. I have attached an image to better clarify this. It is possible for the shackle to flip like you described, but...

There is no definitive guide to the installation of the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs part # APT8. It is designed as a universal tandem axle trailer hanger kit. It can be used in many different situations. Basics are the hangers get welded to the trailer where you will require them for you application and everything attaches to them. It depends on the leaf springs you are using. Basically you will need to mock it all up before permanently installing anything on...

  • How Tight to Get Shackle Bolts on Trailer Suspension
Yes when tightening the lock nuts of the shackles of the trailer suspension kits you want to tighten them down to the point that the bolt goes all the way through and the head is flush like you said. The nut only needs to be that tight as the suspension needs to be able to move without tension.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Equalizer that Tilts to One Side
Normally if the equalizer is tilted like what you have typically it's because the trailer is not sitting level. The side tilted up is typically pointed down towards the ground. It's hard to see in your picuture but it almost could be the case based on the angle of the frame and the ground in the background. Otherwise it indicates that either a leaf spring is too long or the center hanger is not properly located. I'd try measuring the distance between all of the hangers on one side of the...

  • What Are The Two Upper Holes In Short Hangers In Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit APT8 For?
I am happy to help! Starting with the two holes in the shorter hangers included in the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs - 2-1/2" Front/Rear, 4-1/2" Center # APT8 you were looking at. Those holes are not for bolting but instead are for plug welding the hanger to the frame if you choose. You could also just have the hanger welded all the way around. Moving on to the equalizers. The length of the equalizer are from center of one horizontal hole to the center of the other...

  • Why Are Shackle Straps Hitting Frame When Re-Building Trailer Suspension
The problem seems to be mostly that your shackle straps are hitting the frame, and the reason for this is almost certainly because the 3-1/8" Shackle Strap # TRSL313 you are using are too long. The other possibility was the hangers being too short but that is unlikely considering the lengths you gave. What I recommend is trying out the 2-5/8" shackle straps from the the # APT8 kit you have, as those are the typical length for a tandem axle trailer, while 2-1/4" straps such as # TRSL225...

There is no specific measurement for how tall your hangers should be. If you are replacing existing hangers then it is best to match the size of what you have now. If not then the # APT8 would work well. Another good option would be the # APT5 which is our most popular hanger kit. We also have a table showing distances between hangers based on different leaf springs for this particular kit to make things easier. If you need U-bolts to mount your axle then you can use the # APUBR-8. I...

  • Hanger Kit Recommendation for a 6K Axle on a Tandem Trailer
There are two spring options that would work for you, the part # e46SR that you referenced or the 5 Leaf Spring part # e34SR. The only difference is that the # e34SR is a multi-leaf spring with a 100 lbs more capacity than the # SP-115275. Either would work fine for you, I would go with the # e34SR just because of the additional capacity, and with a multi-leaf spring if a leaf fails your trailer wouldn't be completely un-usable. You would be able to limp home to fix the trailer. The Tandem-Axle...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch And Wiring For A 2024 Honda HR-V
Hey Joseph, There's currently only one 2" trailer hitch receiver available for a 2024 Honda HR-V at this time with the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # EH52KR. For the trailer wiring you'll need the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C44NR. If you'd rather have the connector live out on the trailer hitch rather than in the trunk and have to drape it out every time you need to tow you'll want to pick up a no-drill mount # 18140 and bracket # 18144

  • How to Decide Which Tandem Axle Trailer Hanger Kit to Use
Typically when building a tandem axle trailer I recommend using either the # APT3 or # APT5 Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit. These are the most common kits used for utility trailers and parts are readily available. The # APT5 kit is by far the most common because all the hangers are the same height and provide good tire clearance. There are a lot of variables when selecting a hanger kit. First you should select a kit that will accommodate the wheel and tire combination you are using. The...

  • How to Determine Hanger Spacing on Tandem Axle Trailer
That depends on the width of the equalizer used in the suspension setup. Let's say you were using the tandem hanger kit part # APT8 though which has a 7-1/2 inch wide equalizer though. The distance between the hangers would be 28 inches using the # e59SR which measures 23-1/8 inches. Basically with this spring you want to have 24-1/4 inches between the hangers on the outside of the setup and the bolt hole center of the equalizer side it attaches to using shackles. So roughly you want...

In order to add another axle to a trailer you'd need to remove/replace any and all existing suspension components such as the leaf springs, leaf spring hangers, etc. I then recommend using the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs prt # APT8 which would pair well with the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring part # e54SR. Finally, you'd need to pick out your axles which would first require some measuring but you'd need to mock up the hangers and leaf springs beforehand. The Trailer...

Equalizer # TREQE1 does not have a weight capacity itself. It isn't bearing much of the weight compared to other components in a trailer suspension set up. If you have a tandem axle trailer then you could potentially use kit # APT5, # APT3, # APT9, # APT8, # APT7, or # APT3HD. All of these kits have the 7-3/4 inch long equalizers. For a triple axle trailer you could use # APTT5 or # APTT3. All of the above kits also come with hangers. If you do not need hangers then you would need to...

  • What is Needed to Add Second Axle
To add a second axle to your trailer, apart from the axle you'll need another set of hangers that need to be welded on, another leaf spring, four more U-bolts, an equalizer, four more shackle straps, and eight more shackle bolts. You'll have to measure your hangers for matching ones and reposition your current axle as well so I can't give you any specifics on what is needed. The Hanger Kit # APT3HD is going to be the closest we have to your current hangers. This kit does have the same 2-1/2" front and rear hangers as the Kit # APT8 you found but it has the taller 5-7/16" center hangers which is very close to your current 5-1/2" hangers. This slight difference in hanger size will result in a slightly higher trailer height likely only around 1/4". The old springs likely have more sag than that depending on the age of the trailer.
