Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Recommended Replacement Galvanized Trailer Tire/Wheel Combo for a ST205/75R14 Tire
Hey Wayne, I did some looking around and it does not look like we carry any Endurance tires in the size you're looking for. We do have the Goodyear Endurance ST205/75R15 Radial Tire # LH53FR which will work with a ST205/75R15 tire but it's also not galvanized. Instead, I'd recommend checking out the Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire with 14" Galvanized Wheel # AM3S450 which does have a galvanized wheel, will work as a direct replacement since it's the same size you're looking for,...

  • Replacement Wheel and Tire for a 26-Ft. Travel Trailer
Your dry weight and payload come out to 7396 pounds. This being a travel trailer, you probably have two 3500-lb axles. As such, each tire will need to have a capacity of at least 1750 pounds, so the tires will need a load range of C or higher. For your ST205/75D14 tires, we have options for load ranges C and D. However, your current tires are bias, and the only load range D that we have are radial, so C will be our option for you. I recommend the Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire...

  • Replacement Wheel and Tire Recommendation for Size F78-14 with Galvanized Wheel
The modern size equivalent for the tire size F78-14 is the size 205/75-14. So for this size on a galvanized wheel Taskmaster Mod Wheel and Tire part # AM3S450. What's great about the Taskmaster tires is that they are rated for higher speeds at 81 mph whereas most are only rated for 65. The tire has a ply rating of 6 and a 1,760-lb max load at 50 psi as well.

  • Are 14 Inch Trailer Available With 6-Bolt Pattern For 10,000 Lb Trailer
The tire/wheel combo we offer that has a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern and has the highest capacity is the Dexstar ST225/75R15 Radial Tire With 15 Inch Wheel, part # AM32680. This is a Load Range E tire that has a weight capacity of 2,830 lbs at 80 psi. If you have a tandem trailer and are planning on replacing all 4 wheels and tires, these would be able to handle the load. This combo measures 28.4 inches diameter when inflated and the wheel rim measures 15 inches diameter and 6 inches wide....

  • Spare Wheel/Tire Recommendation for 2015 Little Guy 6 Wide Tear Trailer
I was able to look up the owners manual of your 2015 Little Guy 6 wide trailer and found that it has a tire size of 205/75D14 mounted on a wheel that has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. So for a spare the Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire with 14" Galvanized Wheel # AM3S450 would work really well as it checks all those boxes.

  • Galvanized Wheel and Spare Tire for a Boat Trailer
The reason it says not to put it on a boat trailer is because the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire item # AM32161 you referenced is on a steel wheel. For a spare tire that is better suited for a boat trailer I recommend the Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire with 14" Galvanized Wheel item # AM3S450. Aside from the load rating and it being a galvanized wheel you are looking at an identical tire and wheel combo. This would be a better spare tire for your boat and it is a little...

From what I was able to research, your Karavan 6x10ft Aluminum Utility Trailer is model number 2990-72-12 and came with 205/75/D14C tires. There is only 1/2" width difference between the stock tires and the # AM3S560 , but in order to use them you would need to upgrade both tires/wheels so that you have a matching set. With that being said, the correct replacement tire for your trailer is going to be the Loadstar ST205/75D14 # AM3S450 , which is a load range C tire that has the exact tire...

  • Do Trailer Wheels And Tires Require Balancing?
Our trailer tire and wheel packages do not come balanced as they do not require it. Trailer wheel and tires are designed to support heavy loads and generally not looked at for a smooth vibration free ride. That is the same reason you virtually never see shocks on a trailer. Vehicles that carry passengers will have the wheels balanced to provide a smooth ride for the passengers inside the vehicle as well as provide a smoother ride for the suspension and steering components. Since trailers...

  • Can ST205/75R14 Trailer Tires be Replaced with ST205/76R15 Trailer Tires
You can potentially switch from ST205/75R14 tires and wheels to ST205/75R15 tires and wheels but you first need to make sure that there is enough clearance all around the existing tires for the larger size. The 14s that you have now are abut 26.3 inches tall and about 8.1 inches wide. The 205/75-15s will be about 27.1 inches tall and about 8.1 inches wide. The width is the same but the 15s will be about 0.8 inches taller which means that there needs to be clearance above the existing...

  • Are the Trailer Wheel and Tire Combos Already Balanced
Every tire and every wheel has a high (heavy) spot and a low (light) spot. When the manufacturers mount the tires on the wheels, they try to offset the tire high spot and the wheel high spot to provide some balance. However, to achieve an actual balanced tire, you would need to take them to a tire shop and have them professionally balanced.

If you compare two tires of the same manufacturer and tire size, load range B tires should all have the same capacity, same for load range C or D. For a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, use part # AM3H470 or for a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, use part # AM3H490. To get a higher capacity than that, you'd need to go with a larger tire like a 215/75-14,...

  • Should Trailer Have Bias Ply and Radial Tires Mixed
We definitely do not recommend mixing bias and radial tires on the same axle. You can probably get by with mixing bias and radial tires on different axles but we still would not recommend it. Also, if you plan on towing a lot we would urge you to use only radial tires. I have included a FAQ on trailer tires for you to check out.

  • What is the Difference Between Bias Tires and Radial Tires
When you are comparing a Bias tire, like part # AM3S450, and a Radial tire, like part # TR20514, the deciding factor on which one to use really comes down to the trailer that the tire will be on and what the trailer is used for. You are right that the Bias tires do have a stiffer sidewall, but that doesn't mean that they are stronger. The strength of a tire comes from the Load Range that it has. The stiffness of the Bias tire makes it better suited for off-road applications like farming....

This tire has a diameter of 26.8 inches which would be about an inch shorter in diameter than what you have. Is that too short? The "D" in the ST205/75D14 stands for a bias tire, which is mainly used for agricultural applications and is not a great replacement for general driving. What you are looking for is a radial tire, which is what the "R" stands for in the ST205/75R14. Loadstar is made by Kenda tires, and for a replacement that will...
