Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • What 20.5 x 8 x 10 Tire/Wheel Combination do You Recommend with a 2-1/2" Center Hub Hole Diameter?
While we definitely have a tire size of 20.5 x 8 x 10 (also written as 215/60-8), we only carry wheels that have a 2-1/2 inch center hole diameter. Since your current wheel has a 2-3/4 inch diameter hole, this provides you with clearance. You need to make sure that your hub's center hole provides enough clearance for where a 2-1/2" wheel diameter. For this reason, I recommend measuring your hub's center hole with calipers like the # PTW80157 to make sure there is enough space between your...

  • Replacements For 18.5/8.5-8 Trailer Tires On a Tandem Jet Ski Trailer and Larger 10" Options
To answer your question on the exact load rating tires I would need to know the weight of the trailer along with any additional cargo carried with the Jet skis. The Loadstar 215/60-8 K399 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1HP26 is the replacement size we have for your 18.5x8.5-8. This tire is a load range C rated for 935lbs per tire. We also have it in a load range D # AM1HP28 at 1,165lbs per tire. If you wanted to move up to a 10" diameter wheel you will need to ensure you have enough clearance...

  • Why Do Trailer Tires Need to Be Inflated to Maximum Cold Pressure
Yes, you always want to keep your trailer tires like # AM3H470 inflated to the maximum COLD pressure indicated on their side wall. As you start your travel day the tires' pressure will naturally increase due to the higher temperature caused by friction, but this is not anything you need to compensate for. The key is to start your travel day with the cold tires inflated to their maximum pressure which is the only way you can get their full weight carrying capacity. Tire # AM3H470 will handle...

  • Spare Tire Recommendation for Boat Trailer with 20.5 x 8 x 10E Size Tires
Thank you for all of the info! Yes, the tire size of 205/65-10 is the exact same size as your 20.5 x 8 x 10E and for your application I recommend the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" Galvanized Wheel # AM3H470 as long as your current wheels have a 4 on 4" bolt pattern. If you have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern then you can use the combo # AM3H480, but for the uncommon 5 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern use part # AM3H454. I have attached a link to a page about how to determine wheel bolt pattern...

  • What is the Wheel Bolt Pattern on the Kenda 205/65-10 Tire With Galvanized Wheel
The bolt pattern on the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" Galvanized Wheel part # AM3H470 is a 4 on 4". To determine if this is a match simply measure from the center of one wheel stud to the center of the opposite wheel stud. If it is 4" this will be a great fit. I have linked an article on how to determine wheel stud patterns if this does not match for you.

  • Replacement 10 Inch Wheel and Tire for Pontoon Boat Trailer
We do have a solution for you but you are going to need to know your wheel's bolt pattern in order to get the correct wheel. Since you mentioned you had a 20.5x8.0-10 tire (which is the same size as a 205/65-10 trailer tire) we know you have a 10" diameter wheel and the options for a wheel and tire combination in that size will have either a 4 on 4" bolt pattern or the more common 5 on 4-1/2"; if you do not know your bolt pattern please take a look at the help article I've added which...

  • Solution for Replacement Wheels and Tires on Pontoon Boat Trailer With Split Rims
Since those are split rims you would need tires with tubes for the wheels. Split rims have been discontinued since they are dangerous and prone to failure, so I recommend replacing the wheels as well. There is nothing that comes up for 680z9 tires, perhaps they are 6.90/6.00-9. I would double check the size. Either way it seems as though it has 9" wheels. I recommend moving to 10" wheels and tires if possible. The Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" Galvanized Wheel # AM3H470 would...

  • Smallest Tire Available with Capacity Greater Than 1600 lbs for Pontoon Boat Trailer
If you compare two tires of the same manufacturer and tire size, load range B tires should all have the same capacity, same for load range C or D. A 205/65-10 tire like part # AM1HP56 has a 1650 lb capacity at 90 psi. Two tires would give you a 3300 lb capacity. Wheel/tire combos are also available. For a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, use part # AM3H470 or for a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, use part # AM3H490. To get a higher capacity than that, you'd need to go with a larger tire like a 215/75-14,...

  • Replacement Wheels and Tires For 20.5x8x10 Tires on Wave Runner Trailer
The modern replacement tire for your 20.5x8x10 tires are 205/65-10 Bias tires which are the same size as your current tires. To answer your question about radial tires vs bias tires, radial tires do dissipate heat more efficiently which is why they are recommended for highway use, however we do not carry a ST145 R12 radial tire that has a highway speed rating. They are rated for 65 MPH so they will not provide the highway speeds you are looking for. They are only 1" larger in diameter...

  • Maximum Capacity 205/65-10 Trailer Tire & Wheel For Boat Trailer
All you need for the right 205/65-10 trailer tire and wheel is one that is rated either at or past the GVWR of your trailer; anything rated higher than that is paying more for capacity you aren't using. While you didn't mention the GVWR, the highest rated 205/65-10 tire and wheel is the 1,650 lbs you mentioned (there isn't anything smaller with a higher rating), and four of those are 6,600 lbs, so as long as your trailer's GVWR is less than that, go with a tire and wheel from Kenda, with...

I recommend the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" Galvanized Wheel part # AM3H470 with 4 on 4 bolt pattern.
