Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The tires are perfect. They fit great. I built my trailer when I was sixteen, some 50 years ago. My tires dry rotted like most trailers. These new ones are just what I was looking for. They were shipped without any problems. I would order from trailer again, which I already have and planning on ordering another tire to replace my spare for the trailer.

by:

Received my trailer tires from etrailer.com very promptly. They look real nice and the rating exceeds what I presently use. Their price was very fair.
I am quite happy with this whole proceeding. Great communication!!!

by:

Everything looks good, fits right and all that. I'll do a review a year from now after some abuse!

by:

Product was exactly what was listed. Arrived inflated.Fit without any issues. Pulled about 1000 miles and can see no signs of wear. Satisfied with the purchase.

A year already? No tire changing can make for a mighty speedy summer. I will look to these for my next round of tires. Round... Tires... Get It?

by:

These tires are great! More importantly, the customer service I received from eTrailer was outstanding! I did quite a bit of research to find the best price on the tire size I needed for my trailer. eTrailer had the best price, the purchasing process was quick and easy and the tires shipped quickly. I would buy from eTrailer again in a heartbeat!

by:

Very easy start to finish, I really like how they tracked the package. Seemed like there is a lot of pride in their work.

by:

Just what I needed. Good Price and arrived quickly in perfect shape. THX

by:

The two Kenda Loadmaster mounted tires I ordered were a perfect fit for my vintage Coleman Colonial pop-up camper. I discovered my old tires were in poor condition when having the bearings repacked. I had a camping trip coming for which I had already paid a non-refundable camp site fee for specific dates. I was unable to find these wheels on short notice locally. etrailer came to my rescue and my new wheels were on my porch within 3 days. They were fully inflated and the rims looked great in their white powder coat not to mention the great tread. These new rims and tires will give me great peace of mind as I pull my camper from Cincinnati to Oshkosh through busy Chicago traffic. The fast service and quality product was much appreciated!

by:

Fantastic communication and shipping time! Product is great!

by:

These are my 2nd set of tires for this trailer. The EXACT same perfect tires as the 1st time & the EXACT same perfect customer service as 7 years ago. Never had a flat & they still hold air, but I am being proactive by getting new 1's before tragedy strikes. Yep, I haul really heavy material regularly & they still lasted 7 years which is amazing! Very HAPPY!! Thank You

Sammy

The Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM3H290 is going to be our only 8" wheel size that will hold a tire with a speed rating of M 81mph. The narrower Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30120 is only rated for 65mph.

We have a couple options for you to replace your 205/60-8 tire and wheel with a 4 on 4" bolt pattern with something slightly wider and taller. A 205/60-8 measures 17.7" in diameter and is 8.1" wide, and for a bigger option there is a 215/60-8 tire, which is 18.3" in diameter and 8.9" wide. For that size tire with a wheel you have two choices: - Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM3H290 - Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel # AM3H300 The only...

  • Finding Replacement Wheel With Correct Pilot Hole To Switch From 12 Inch To 13 Inch Wheel/Tire
As long as your trailer hub uses lug nuts, the pilot hole will not effect mounting your wheel to the trailer hub because the lugs will center the wheel on the hub. The only time you have to match up the pilot hole is when your hub uses lug bolts, which then would use a hub-centric wheel. You will need to measure the bolt pattern of your trailer to determine the correct wheel you will need for your trailer (see FAQ). You will also want to make sure that you will have clearance from the...

  • Is Kenda Trailer Tire and Wheel Combo # AM3H290 Rated for Highway Travel
I am glad that you like the Kenda Tire/Wheel Combo, # AM3H290. All of the trailer tires that we carry are rated for 65 miles per hour and safe for highway travel as long as you stay at or under 65, follow the weight capacity which is 935 pounds at 50 psi, and have the tire inflated to the max psi (50) for best performance and longest life. The 225 x 8 isn't a size we carry, but we do have the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3H290 which have a zero offset. This will give you 4.45 inches of backspacing since the tires are 8.9 inches wide. The same is true of the 5 lug wheel and tire # AM3H310.

  • Can a 215/60-8 Size Tire Replace a 5.70-8 Tire for a Pop Up Camper Trailer
The main difference between a 5.70-8 trailer tire and a 215/60-8 will be the width. Your current tire is about 5.9 inches wide and the 215/60-8 is about 8.9 inches wide. They will both be about the same height. If your current wheel setup has more than 1-1/2 inches of clearance from the inner sidewall of the tire to the frame of your trailer you would have clearance for the # AM3H290 to fit.

  • What Size Tire Pairs With The Americana 8" x 7" Steel Wheel?
The tire typically paired with the 8" x 7" steel wheel # AM20021 will be the Kenda # AM1HP26. This is a 215/60-8 tire with a load capacity of 935 lbs at 50 psi and has an M speed rating (81 mph), both of which should be more than enough for a mini bike build. When inflated the tire will measure 8.9" wide and 18.3" in diameter. You will also need a valve stem like # AM20903 as the rim does not have one included. If you would like, these all come preassembled as part # AM3H290.

If you are referring to the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM3H290 then the backspacing will be 4". This however is not a constant amongst all 8" diameter x 7" wide trailer wheels as the offset will affect backspacing if present. I'd recommend going with a 12 inch wheel with a ST145/R12 tire on it, like the # AM35354. I've linked you to our selection in that tire size/wheel configuration. You'll want to choose a wheel with the desired finish with the properly rated tires. You'll want tires you choose to have a combined capacity that exceeds the weight of the trailer and its contents.

The wheel used on the # AM3H290 has a zero offset, which means that the mounting plate of the wheel that sits against the face of the hub is in the center of the width of the wheel. Because the tire is about 9 inches at its widest, you'd be looking at about 4-1/2 inches from the inside of rim where it bolts to hub to the tire surface closest to the trailer frame.
