Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Black Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - LR D - AM35354

Average Customer Rating:  4.8 out of 5 stars   (5805 Customer Reviews)

Radial tire has a ply rating of 8 and a 1,220-lb maximum load at 65 psi. The 12" diameter x 4" wide steel trailer wheel has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and a corrosion resistant, black powder coat finish.

If you're on the fence, just buy them! I got these to replace the bias 4.80-12 tires that came with the trailer. These are light years better. They have a modern automotive style tread, plus they are M speed (81MPH) rated! The gloss black wheels look cool too. They have a much wider and flatter contact pattern with the ground, and while slightly larger diameter, they fit the stock 12" wheel fender perfectly. I've got a lot more peace of mind towing my utility trailer at highway speeds now.

One year later, and these are still great tires. Super smooth and straight at high speeds on the highway. No complaints!

I needed a spare tire for my yacht club trailer, it was an odd size and you guys had it right in line as I browsed down the wheel sizes on your site, including shipping I got it cheaper than going to the local Marine dealer. Now I need summer to get here.

Ed F.

Needed a spare since purchase of boat, many different tire a d rim sizes on trailers, found the correct one on your site, hole pattern and dimensions were right on.

Faster delivery than I thought. Packaged well. I switched out my cheap wheels for the highway speeds.

Etrailer was easy to work with and the tires/rims were great. I'd highly recommend them.

Love the tires and wheels and also the fit on my boat trailer ! Bought 3 , 2 to replace old tires and wheels and a spare!

These tires have been great for me. I put them on a harbor freight trailer for my raft and I fell much better about going highway speeds.

I bought a trailer in Colorado to bring back to Alaska and had your tires and wheels shipped to my son in Colorado and everything worked out great!

Good looking tires and wheels, fast shipping as always. etrailer for all my trailer needs. Put these on a home made kayak trailer.

Bought these to replace my 480x12 setup. Ordered these on a saturday afternoon recieve on a tuesday! Came package very well, compared to the ones you order off amazon that they just plastic band together and get beatup in the shipping process. Great black powder coat finsh on the wheels. Fit perfect on my trailer. Couldnt be happier with the whole process. Will definitely be a returning customer!!

Its always great to hear when one of our neighbors has a good experience! We would love to see a photo of the wheels on the trailer. Do you have any you wouldnt mind sharing?

Was able to easliy find what i was looking for. There were instructions to ensure proper fit. Easy to purchase. Quick processing and shipping. Extremely happy with everything about etrailer

The tires are a great upgrade to the standard "Carry On" trailer tire. Made a few modifications to the fender well and the results were what I was looking for. We've have taken my homemade square-drop camper out a few times now and rides really well.

I bought these for my PWC trailer. Fit, look and performance are excellent at this point.

Exactly what I needed to renew an older trailer.

They look great and much more comfortable taking them on the interstate than the 4.8x12 tires.

Used this tire to replace 4.8-12. fit perfect under the fender. Definitely worth it

Replacement radial tires and rims are a great upgrade. Delivery was fast.

Fit perfectly on my 2022 Karavan 5x8 trailer. Still surprised the tires that came on it were rated LESS than what the trailer is rated for. Now I don't have to worry for a blowout since these two tires are more than the capacity of the trailer

Tire seems to work as expected. However, the tire was mounted on the rim, inside out (tapered holes on opposite side from air valve stem). I have to crawl under the trailer to check the pressure or fill it with air!!!! Over the winter I can have them remounted. That will cost me $[XX] each (x2).

My 5 x 8 carry-on trailer needed bigger wheels and tires so I can feel more secure out on the road these were the perfect answer look at that fit I am very pleased with my purchase thank you etrailer.

Fourth or fifth set of trailer tires I’ve purchased from etrailer. Great rims, great tires, fast shipping. It’s a no brainer

Good product at a good price. Tires have held up nicely but honestly the trailer sits all year and is only used twice a year back and forth 800 miles.

Arrived on time and replaced my old bias ply tires perfectly. The black wheels have a great finish.

Great looking rim and definitely a better tire than what comes stock on my trailer. My trailer is brand new but came with Bias tires which I don't trust at all. Radial tires track much better, have a flatter tread which tracks better and are overall a stronger tire in my mind. The trailer came without a spare so I used one of the original Wheel as a spare .

Nice little upgrade from bias ply tires on the snowmobile trailer.

I blew out my pop-up trailer tire and had another trip coming up in less than a week. These tires delivered within 2 days to my home without any extra charge.

I like the level of detail that is provided by etrailer. The information available made it very easy for me to determine that this was the proper tire for my trailer. Overall very pleased with my experience. I'll be testing these out soon.

I do have some options for you. The closest tires and wheels that compare to the one pictured are our 145/80-12s. I recommend using either the Kenda Karrier S-Trail # AM31199DX, or the Kenda Karrier Black Mod # AM35354; both of these tires have a 1,220 lbs maximum load at 65 psi. I am recommending the tires with the wheels because even though your wheel might be functional, it looks like it is a little beat up around the edges. This system will allow you to simply attach the assembly to the frame and then use a 2 inch square bar between the assemblies in the integrated holes. I have some good news for you Derek, the hub pilot of trailer wheels is not as important as on most vehicles since smaller trailer wheels like yours are going to be lug centric and not hub centric. For a 12 inch wheel/tire combo, I'd recommend the Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 tire on a 12 inch powder coated steel wheel, part # AM35354. This is a radial tire that will run cooler than a bias ply at highway speeds, however the tire is rated for a maximum speed of 65 mph.

  • Does Pilot Diameter of Replacement Wheel Need to Match Original Wheel
The answer to your question will depend on whether your wheels are hub centric or lug centric. Hub centric wheels center on the hub using the hub bore and lug centric wheels center on the hub using lug nuts.
