Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Bought one of these as a spare for our camper. Wheel had a nonvisible crack and leaked air. Tire was fine, but wheel was useless. Called and told to contact the manufacturer, which got me nowhere. Wheel went to the scrap pile and the tire is still lying in the garage.

by:

Good quality so far haven’t had any issues whatsoever with the tires it’s hauled heavy and fast highway speeds and have been flawless. Been about a year since purchasing.

by:

Ordered a set of five for the tandem axle upgrade project. These are a good product, arriving in a good shipping box that had opposing handles to 'pour' the tire and wheel out easily. I am pleased to be able to order these assembled, aired up and ready to bolt onto the axles.

by:

Wheel packages arrived within days - much sooner than expected.
Very pleased with the quality and price of these wheel/tires.
Ordered as replacements for my boat trailer.

Every step of the order process - from technical advice to sales was seamless and professional .
Order placed on a Thursday, arrived on a Monday morning with standard shipping !!!
Price was very competitive.

Installed and ready to go !

by:

Tire was shipped fast and inflated to the right pressures

by:

They are round, filled with air and they look great. I haven't yet installed them but they appear as advertised. Ordering was easy, shipping quick. The tires are going on a custom built trailer.

The tires are still round, they hold air and look good. They have been installed on the trailer, the trailer is nearly finished. It needs to be licensed. I rather slow in building the trailer.

by:

I must confess that before making this purchase, I did select another option, a little cheaper, with a very fast delivery time, to buy new tires for my trailer boat. MY BIG MISTAKE: after confirming the order, the seller DID NOT confirm the delivery, THEY delayed the delivery and I lost a beautiful weekend fishing. I canceled that purchase.
My advice to everyone: don't change a winning team.
I had previously purchased two wheels and tires for my trailer boat, with etrailer. Same brand, same quality. I placed a new order, received special attention the whole time (congratulations to Bill S) and the product was already delivered.
Guess what? at the end, it wasn't a big difference in price after all.

by:

They're great. Don't raise the price just because people like them.

by:

Tire and rem came mounted with right air pressure the right fit for my trailer fast delivery. Glad doing business with Etrailer.

by:

Great quality tire and wheel. Thanks, e trailer.com!

by:

The order arrived 1 day earlier than expected. The product was exactly what I ordered. Great price for the item! I recommend etrailer for anyone that wants great quality, pricing and excellent customer service.

by:

Natalie answered my call for help, She asked me when do you need the tire and wheel? I replied "yesterday" ! She said OK!
Then she said they would send it free shipping! I said lets do that! I placed this order on Monday morning, I received it on Wednesday late afternoon! THIS WEEK!
These people are absolutely AMAZING!
The day before I had a blowout on my portable emergency back-up generator. My tire and wheel was destroyed! I had it towed to my friends shop. I called my friends at Associated Power in Wilmington CA," Greg" recommended etrailer.com.
I did, they saved my life!
I highly recommend them and I am now they're newest good will ambassador.
They are good, friendly down home good people.
Thanks, Natalie !!!!!!

by:

The new tires and wheels are on and look Great ! We will feel a lot more comfortable when we leave this Texas Heat and head to Colorado for a month or maybe more.

by:

Fast delivery , all ready to put on & roll up the highway !

by:

Still rolling after a year on the flatbed trailer. Just what I asked for and delivered in good time and condition

by:

Looked like a good replacement for my c amper

by:

Just arrived, exactly what I ordered. They look great.

by:

Needed a spare tire and wheel for my boat trailer and etrailer.com has a great selection with lots of option from standard to completely custom. High quality products and competitive prices will keep me coming back for all my trailer needs.

by:

All tires and wheels came in good condition with no troubles

by:

FAST shipping and exactly what we needed! Perfection delivered to the door!

by:

super fast shipping and a awesome price. I don't have many miles on the tires try
yet so i can't review their wear but customer service is top notch

by:

My used Airstream Bambi did not come with a spare included. I purchased the wheel/tire as an emergency spare. This proved to be a prescient action as my first time out following the purchase resulted in a flat. The spare was a completely compatible and serviceable temporary replacement. Beyond what has been only a one time use, I cannot comment on the long term service of this item.

by:

This was a good deal on wheel and tire combination to replace the old ones on my flatbed trailer. One of wheels had a minor dent on the rim but shouldn't affect the sealing of the tire. Something happened in shipping most likely. Always happy with etrailer products which is why I keep coming back. Good quality and pricing and information about the product.

by:

Fast, FAST shipping. Tires were just as described and good quality!

You can definitely swap out your 3,500 lb axles for 5,200 lb axles but there are a number of other things that need to be changed out as well. Your leaf springs can technically stay the same but if you're overloading the axles then you're definitely overloading the leaf springs as well so you need to upgrade there, and even then your trailer frame is rated for a specific weight rating so you can be within your 10,400 lb axle and spring rating but you could be overloading your trailer. However, I went out and test fit a 15 inch wheel with this hub and found that the two were compatible. Kenda recommends keeping the 225/75-15 Load Range E tires used on their # AM32680 wheel/tire combo fully inflated to the 80 psi listed on the tire sidewall, because the capacity of the tire is dependent on the air pressure. Some manufacturers, notably Goodyear with their Endurance trailer tires, has load tested their tires over several different air pressure levels, so at a given pressure the tire's capacity is known. If you are experiencing wear issues most likely that has to do with the inflation of the tires. Are they inflated to the max psi listed on the sidewall? They have to kept at this pressure at all times otherwise you lose capacity and have wear issues. That being said, if you have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern the part # AM32680 would work great on your trailer.
