Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

No problem with the trailer tires. Great tires, great price.

by:

Have been ordering these tires for about the last 10 years for a small generator trailer that I have. I changed them about once a year. The price is such to wear. It’s affordable to do that because each trailer keeps the price down. I always get my shipments in a timely manner and they are, easy to find on the trailer site. Would never buy them anywhere else but trailer.

by:

Found the exact wheel and tire combination I needed for a spare on a great used motorcycle trailer I had purchased. Have purchased from E-Trailer for years now. Excellent selection and fast delivery.

Still going strong, no issues and because it’s a quality product it still looks like new.

by:

So far so good I've got them on the trailer and plan an outing for this coming week I don't see any problem

Great value used on my tow truck dollie s...

by:

I have been using these tires for about five years on a 20 KW generator. We modified the frame to attach to our event trailer as a Tote . We use a double swivel wheel to support the generator. The generator weighs about 1600 pounds of these tires have held up very good. I change them about once a year as the cost is minimal. I am very satisfied with this product. And etrailer is one of my very best suppliers

by:

Product is exactly as described. It arrived is a reasonable time without a delay of any kind, and without blemish or defect. If I need another one, this will be my source.

by:

Always had good service and products from etrailer.

by:

Great tire no problems excellent fit just what I was looking for great price also

by:

Tire rim came complete removing it, and then reinstalling the new one was very easy. One question do you just sell the tire itself because now I have a spare rim with the bead up tire just to save some money. Thank you keep up the good work up.

by:

I have been dealing with etrailer for some time now, I could not be happing with the product and the service has been a 10. I would like to say the people are extremely helpful also. Regards Richard in Ohio

by:

A perfect for my 1997 Taylor Dunn B-15 industrial utility cart. I used these on the front, and a wider set of similar tires for the rear.

by:

I had a tire blowout. etrailer wouldn't do anything about it, told me to call Kenda, and Kenda hasn't done anything about it either. Horrible service on both ends, manufacturer and retailer. 100% refusal to stand behind products they sell. Don't waste your time or money, buy local from someone who actually stands behind their products and don't send you to a manufacturer who refuses to stand behind their products and tells you to contact the retailer. Absolutely terrible customer service past the sale, pitiful. etrailer, you should be ashamed!

by:

I bought this for a spare figured it would be hard to find on the road being a load range d. Arived in three days. Very happy.

by:

This was an A+ transaction. Fast/free shipping, product exactly as shown. Great communication from start to finish, best prices I could find. I have a trailer parts site for life.

Thanks, George,

John P.

I had to change one of the tire due to an egg in. But I could find my recipe.

Had a hard time finding these load range D tires this size. I found them at etrailer and had them in a couple days. Great service

by:

Dealing with etrailer was a positive experience. Ordering was easy. The product delivered on time and in perfect condition. The wheels and tires are for a 1993 Pop Up Camper. I phoned customer service with some questions after receiving the product & Will was pleasant & heelpfull.

Excellent service. Timely delivery.

by:

I put these on my trailer as soon as I got them. taking a trip soon. I've been buying my 3-rail trailer tires from other MAJOR retail stores, paying no attention to load ratings. shopping online opened my eyes to this, I've been buying B rated, these are D rated, for about $10 more each, shipped to my door.Well worth it, just to avoid the hassles of finding the right size & quantity needed. I've been experiencing poor performance(blowouts) & short lifespan, now I realize why. I doubt I'll go anywhere else if these last 3 years or more(about 2,400 miles).Watch the pressure on small tires. If it's low, they get hot & explode(trust me). Other info on website was helpful & not found on other websites I saw.Processing & standard shipping was VERY fast. Friday late night to wed. afternoon to central Ohio. Will gladly buy here again. Thanks Etrailer !! I'm a happy Camper.

  • Is the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 Lug Offered with Larger Hub Bore
I checked all of our 8" trailer wheels, the hub bores are all 2.8" just like the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D part # AM30155. That said, the replacement wheel hub bore does not need to match the existing since these wheels are lug piloted, the hub bore on the wheel just needs to be larger than the hub bore on the hub.

  • What PSI Should Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel be Inflated To
With trailer tires you always want to inflate them to the max psi that is listed on the sidewall of the tire. In the case of the # AM30155 that would be 100 psi. This ensures you get the full weight capacity out of the tire and prevent heat build up. The higher the Load Range of the tire the higher the pressure requirement would end up being generally speaking.

  • Will Kenda 5.70-8 Tire & Wheel With 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern Work For Boat Trailer
Yes, for your boat trailer with 5.70-8 tires with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern you can absolutely use the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM30155. The white wheels on this combo will work with a boat trailer, but I do recommend considering the same option but with galvanized wheels. Reason is, galvanized wheels are going to offer you better corrosion resistance, which can be important for boat trailers, especially if they are used quite often....

  • Do the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tries with 8 Inch White Wheel Have a Speed Rating
Due to the size of these tires, they aren't given an official speed rating. Typically tires 13 inches and larger are given speed ratings. I spoke with my contact at Kenda and she said that the # AM30155 tire and wheel is tested for speeds up to 62 miles per hour. There is not a speed rating stamped on these tires.

I may have a potential solution for you, but the tire size 165/65-8 is only available in load range C. To step up in load range, you will have to switch to tire size 215/60-8 Tire and Wheel # AM3H325 or 5.70-8 # AM30155 which are both slightly larger in diameter by about 1-1/2 inch and the 215/60-8 tire # AM3H325 is about 2 inches wider while the 5.70-8 tire # AM30155 is about 1/2 inch narrower. Thankfully trailer wheels don't use a wide range of 5 lug bolt patterns so if you have a 5 lug wheel with a tire size of 5.70-8 mounted on it the part # AM30155 would fit and work well. I did some research and it looks like your 1997 Cushman Titan uses 5.70 x 8 tires. The tire/wheel combo I recommend is the Kenda part # AM30155. This combo is a Load Range D mounted on an 8-inch diameter rim with a 5 on 4-1/2 wheel bolt pattern. This maximum load rating for this combo is 1,075 lbs at 100 psi. The center pilot hole on the wheel measures 2.8 inches.

We do have some options for you to add a 5.7-8 size tire and a hub to your trailer. For a wheel/tire combination I recommend going with the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with Wheel # AM30155. This has a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern and comes with a load range of D (1,075 lbs at 100 psi). Since 8" wheels are typically installed on 2,000 lb axles you would need the hub assembly # AKIHUB-545-2-EZ-1K if you have L44643 bearings or assembly # AKIHUB-545-2-EZ-2K for L44649 bearings. • Downsizing Trailer Wheel and Tire Combination to Lower Personal Water Craft PWC Trailer Height
The 5.70-8 could be a viable replacement size for your PWC, but I also have another solution that may work to make loading and unloading easier. The benefits of downsizing your tire and wheels are mainly the height loading aspect. With your current setup you have an outer diameter of 20.5 and the down sized tire is 18.1 inches. You may also see some ride stability because the center of gravity will be lower so you may get less sway when towing. Some drawbacks of downsizing your tires...

For a trailer tires I prefer bias ply over radials for typical use. If you were full time travelers I would go for the added expense of radials with longer tread life and cooler running temperatures. For more typical users who can expect the tires to run out of time before tread, I would use the less expensive bias ply tires. However you present what appears to be hybrid use; Some long trips then long idle times. If you have had good experience with bias ply tires, I would not change,...

The Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with Wheel part # AM30155 measures 18" diameter x 5.9" wide and fits a standard 5 on 4" bolt pattern. The 18.5x8.50-8 tire measures 17.25" diameter x 8.6" wide. Therefore, the new size will be slightly larger in diameter by .75" and smaller in width by 2.7". I don't know how much space you have but you should be able to use the above to answer your question.

  • How Fast Can Trailer Tire in Size 5.70-8 Go
Normally tire speed ratings are listed right after the tire size as a letter. For example the letter M represents and 81 mph speed rating. If you can't find a speed rating after the tire size the safe assumption will be that the tire is limited to 65 mph which used to be the standard speed for trailer tires. When measuring the bolt pattern on a wheel like yours with an odd number of bolt holes, you want to measure from the center of one hole to the farthest edge of either of the two farther holes. Yes, a 5.70-8 tire will fit the same rim that a 4.80-8 tire fit. They both are designed to fit 8 inch diameter rims that are 3-3/4 inches wide. The larger tire will end up being 2 inches taller overall so you would end up with 1 inch less of fender clearance vertically.
