Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

This is the first time I have ordered trailer tires from Etrailer and I did not know what to expect with regard to service and product quality. The last pair of tires I had on my pontoon boat trailer were 185/80R13 Marathon tires but according to the specifications, the Etrailer 185/80R13 tires had a better load rating and higher safe speed rating than my old Marathon tires. My Etraier tires also have a 2/2018 date of manufacturing which was also a plus.

Great ... I sold my pontoon boat recently but the tires exceeded my expectations. I now go to Etrailer for tire recommendation and technical advise. I recently bought a spare tire and rim for my new Venture trailer from Etrailer. Thanks, PW

by:

Tires arrived quickly, package well, and best of all they are only two months old. Will evaluate tires as time goes by, but etrailer.com did a great job of fulfilling my order.

After having these tires for a year, I must say I am pleased. They are wearing well, hold air great, and offer a good ride.

by:

feel stable and smooth.... wearing good so far after 1000 miles.... I went one size bigger and one up on load and speed rating than my oem pop up tires and I am glad I did... much better ride..

by:

After researching tires for several days, watching etrailer videos and reading all the Q&A's, I decided on this particular size and brand because they're excellent in quality and couldn't find any local dealer that carried them. I ordered the tires, steel wheels and baby moon hubs all together to go on a 15' Scotty camper.
They look great and I would recommend them to anyone who needs a smaller, yet durable tire.

by:

These seem to last a lot longer than the load C tires. They have worked great on my hunting boat trailer.

Tire is running great and wear just like it should.

by:

It came crushed, but the tire installer was able to mount it with some effort on the rim,

by:

These tires are great! Not too many miles on them yet but they ride well. The load range of these tires is great too. The awesome part of this purchase was the tires shipped the same day I ordered them and they arrived in four days! Great customer service!

by:

Got new loadstar tires for my coleman Fleetwood Rio they look great and ride even better. The ride over all is smooth and stable.

by:

Excellent order with fast Delivery and they exemplify my rims and trailer.

and excellent communication!

Highly recommend them!!!!!

by:

Great tires on my camper. I have not had any issues since installing.

by:

I have never ordered tires online or for a trailer before this experience. They had exactly the tire that I wanted in the correct size that I wanted. That made it very simple to just call them up and order. We received the tires in 3 business days. We have not taken a trip on these tires yet but I expect them to be just fine when we do. If you are looking to replace original tires for your camping trailer, this is the place to look first. I will return here for future trailer needs.

Only took one trip on them last summer. One tire went flatlow sitting over the winter. We have kept it aired up during the spring, not sure if this is due to the tire or how they were installed on the trailer. never had that happen on the original tires in 6 years. So a little worried about what might happen on the one trip we plan to take this summer. any advice?

The problem you are describing may be associated with how the wheel was installed on your existing rim, or potentially with the valve stem. If the tire is no seated properly on the wheel, and if the valve stem is bad, or does not have a good seal, you may experience slow air leaks overtime.

by:

So this is the second set of these I have ordered for my 2001 Palamino Pop Up. The first set held air pressure all 10 years I had them and we took 25 trips with them (I just checked that fact the other day). So we had no problems until one popped on the interstate. At 10 years old, not a surprise nor disappointing.

Now the last set I ordered were already on rims mounted and balanced. These new ones came packaged as tires only. The my are way deformed for shipping and folded on half. We will see if they right themselves under air pressure. Not sure how they will get mounted. I used a mounting and balance machine a long time ago only an Army auto craft shop. Can’t imagine how these will turn out. I will update my rating if the experience is a debacle. If the tire shop thinks nothing of it, I will leave myv5 star rating as is.

The tires are perfect. They mounted just fine and ride just fine. Still holding air and haven’t added any in a year. We don’t pull it much these days, but I am confident I have a solid tire.

by:

I bought these tires to put on my travel trailer. The outside and inside treads are wearing faster than the 3 center treads. I always check the pressure before getting on the road and both tires are inflated to 65 pounds.
I only have 18 thousand miles on them. I'm very disappointed in the wear pattern.

Tire treads that are worn at the edges would typically indicate an under inflated tire. Have you tired a different tire gauge in order to confirm your readings? If the pressure is fine, a bent axle or worn suspension parts could certainly cause the wear you describe, as well. The tires are covered by a 2 year warranty. Please call our Customer Service folks at 800-298-8924 for details.

This rating is for customer service and assistance in purchasing new tires for my pop-up camper. Since I have just received the tires I can't honestly rate them. But if they perform as well as ETRAILER I'm sure I will be a happy camper. I ordered the tires on Thursday and they were delivered the following Wednesday. Thanks for the recommendation, the quick delivery, and a fair price. I'm sure this won't be my last purchase.

I have made several long distance and a few shorter trips with these tires over the past year. The roads vary from Interstate Highways to country backroads. The tires have performed flawlessly under a wide variety of weather conditions. I am completely satisfied. And as I predicted this wasnt my last purchase from etrailer. Thanks for great products and great service.

by:

Tires were sent very fast and well packed in a box, not just shrink wrapped. The tires themselves are by far a better tire than what came on my boat trailer. They are almost twice as heavy as the originals and much stiffer sidewall. They pull better than the old tires ever did. Their price beat any I could find here on a comparable tire. I will be getting in touch with them when I need tires again. I would rate them A- double plus.

I ordered my tires on a weekday and poof they appeared within a day or two. Awesome customer service. I ordered 2 replacement tires and shortly thereafter I sold my popup to my brother who drove it from North Carolina down to the Keys where he lives - he has made multiple trips throughout Florida and has not had any problems at all with the tires and wanted to make sure he knew where I purchased them when it time to replace. Will definitely be a repeat customer. These people do an awesome job!

Loadstar ST185/80D13 tires are replacing the ST 175/80C13 on my Scamp camping trailer. These are the only tires that have a 1725 lb load rating in this size. The rest of the tires are hundreds of lbs less and do not allow much of a safety margin when the camping trailer is loaded. First time buying Kenda trailer tires. I have had great tread life and road handling with my Kenda motorcycle tires.

etrailer.com has great info on their web site and the tires were quickly delivered in boxes, not just shipped naked with a shipping label on them.

  • What Is The Highest Load Rating Available For 185/80-13 Tires?
Hello Barb, thanks for getting in touch. We do offer the 185/80-13 tires but the highest load range available is a load range D. For that I recommend the Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # KE68KV. These are D range so 8 ply rated for 1,709 lb max load at 65 PSI. These will be your best option for upgrading from your current C range tires.

  • Replacing 175/80R14 Trailer Tires
I can certainly point you in the right direction. A 175/80-R14 is fairly uncommon these days, but we do have options for replacing them. A 175/80-R14 has a diameter of 25" and is about 6.9" wide. The best replacement we can offer will be the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias trailer tire # AM3S331. This has a diameter of 24.4" and is 7.2" wide. So you will be losing .6" of diameter and adding .3" of width. I imagine this will fit very nicely in the current fender area, and you will stay very close...

  • Why Should Trailer Tires be Inflated to Their Max Pressure Rating
You will want to inflate the tires to the max psi that the tires have. Trailer tires always need to be inflated to their max pressure to ensure you get their full capacity. Also if they aren't fully inflated the tire can have heat build up which will also cause premature failure. I attached a link below that has more trailer tire info for you to check out as well.

  • Can Trailer Tires Rated for a Combined 3450 Pounds be Used on a 3500 Pound Trailer
You are very close to the capacity but I would still try to stay under the lowest rated component in the system which in this case would be the tires. If you are always at 3500 pounds, the max capacity of the axle, then I would go with a higher capacity tire. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire for longest life and to reach their maximum weight capacity. What this means is that you would have to go to a 14 inch tire and wheel. If this is...

I took a look at your order history, and the last tire purchase I saw was a 185/80-13 bias-ply load range D tire purchased back in 2010. This is part # AM1ST79, and was purchased as a tire only, not a wheel/tire combo. For a 175/80-13 radial tire load range C on a white painted wheel, we offer the Karrier Loadstar # AM31951 which is an 8 spoke white trailer wheel with a 5 lug on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. You will want to match or exceed the trailer capacity and I do not recommend using the tires if you will be over their capacity, even for short distances. The solution is to go up to a 185/80-13 tire load range D. This size is going to be only 0.3 inches taller than the 175s and will also be 0.394 inches...

As long as you have the clearance, the height of the new tire will not be an issue. As for the difference between a radial and bias tire, I recommend a radial tire especially if you are doing a lot of highway towing. Bias tire do have a stiffer sidewall over many radial tires, but the issue with bias tires is they cannot dissipate the heat like radial...

  • Will a Larger Trailer Tire Provide a More Stable Ride Quality
Going with a larger trailer tire will somewhat increase the stability of the tent trailer. Going from a 175 to a 185 series tire wouldn't be that huge of a difference but a larger diameter tire will ride a bit smoother down the highway than a smaller one. Since the size difference is so small you shouldn't have a problem with fender clearance either. If you have a 13 inch wheel you would want the part # AM1ST79 for a 185/80-13 trailer tire.
