Video Transcript for Review of Yakima Roof Rack - Tacoma Skyline Pads - Y74FR

Michael: Hi, there I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're taking a quick look at the Yakima Landing Pad 24. These landing pads are going to allow you to mount your SkyLine Towers onto your vehicle. Those SkyLine Towers, of course, are used to mount your crossbars so that you can use a rooftop cargo box or other rooftop accessory. These pads specifically are designed for your 2005 and newer Toyota Tacoma. So, they are going to attach directly to the factory-fixed mounting points on your Tacoma.

They are going to provide that connection between your fixed mounting points on your Tacoma and your SkyLine Towers. These do have a rubber pad for each of our bases here. These are UV resistant rubber pads. So they are going to help protect our vehicle from scratches and being UV resistant they're not going to break down. They're going to hold up well. We have our base that sits on the pad there and this is what the towers actually connect to our base here.

So, once we have this installed, we'll easily be able to connect the SkyLine Towers. We also have a snap-on cover to help protect our bases when we don't have our towers connected. So a very simple little product here. It is going to require that you drill through your weather stripping on your Tacoma. So they're definitely not a temporary installation. You will be making a hole in your weather stripping to get down to those factory mounting points.

But the instructions are very helpful, very detailed, and helping you find those points and how to work through it. So you will need a drill and some other various tools that you most likely already have in your toolbox to get these installed. But once they're installed, they'll stay installed and they'll be very easy to use to get those towers mounted in place. They do come with a limited lifetime warranty from Yakima. So you can trust if there we're any problems with them, you could give them a call or give us a call here at etrailer.com. We'll help you out with that.

So, everything that you're going to need to get them installed minus some of those extra tools is included. We got our bolts and our washers and our Allen key there. So, really if you have a 2005 or newer Toyota Tacoma and you're wanting to get your SkyLine Towers mounted in place these are going to be the pads that you need. So, that's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with each trailer.com. Thanks for watching.

Great product as always with Yakima. Just be aware the towers are not included and they currently don't carry a tower for round bars.

I bought a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. To use my Yakima Skyline Towers, I had to install these landing pads in the rack rail attached to the roof. The installation was easy, and the pads serve their purpose. But they don't seem to be engineered as secure as I would like. They have more flexibility than I think they should. The bolt head is over an inch from where it screws into the roof. I think Yakima could have engineered something more secure. In fairness to Yakima, the Jeep rack rail is different than any other rack system I've seen and is incompatible with any other system. But I am assuming that these landing pads will work OK with a full load and that the Yakima engineers have done an adequate job. This summer they will be put to the test for 3,000 miles. Note: the Yakima windshield fairing falls on the glass in the moon roof rendering the moon roof unopenable so long as the fairing is used.

These Landing Pads are needed with the Yakima System to connect the Towers (which hold the crossbars) to the rails, which in my case are on top of my pickup canopy. There are many sizes of Landing Pads available, but the Landing Pad 1 I needed connects to the standard Yakima Rails. eTrailer had them in stock when I needed them and shipping was fast and easy.

Exactly what we needed to use our old Yakima bars and kayak sharks with our new Ford Explorer. Our old car, a Ford Expedition, used the same round Yakima bars and kayak sharks but had a different roof rack. Instead of paying $800+ to get a whole new kayak rack system... the adapters we got from etrailer helped us used all the old equipment :)

These towers (Y00148) and the Landing Pads (Y00244) are needed to mount the cross-bars on my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep has flush rails, with an open channel along the top. They are very heavy duty, typical of Yakima stuff. Worked great.

One year and working great. Super solid product. Costly, but well worth the money. Will last forever.

Yes, The Yakima roof rack has been working flawlessly. I did have one issue where one of the landing pad covers flew off that I had to replace. I understand parts wear and plastic gets brittle and/or shrinks with time in the sun, but that shouldn't have happened so soon. Other than that, we bought a Thule Motion XT box to use for long travels.

Review from a similar LandingPad in Roof Rack

I recently purchased a rack system for my 1979 Ford Bronco to haul our new Kayaks. And believe me it was not easy to "fit" a vehicle as old as this. I had some interesting challenges - my truck has a 3" lift and only clears my garage entrance by about 1.5 inches, so whatever I got had to be easily removable (at least in the front). I also wanted it to be multi functional so that I could carry other stuff as well, and the Yakima/Thule systems are great for that. Lastly, I wanted whatever I put on the truck to look good as I have put a lot of time and $ into fixing up this old truck and I didn't want it to look cheezey..... Thanks to the good folks at etrailer I ended up with somewhat of a hybrid approach (my choice) but it worked out exactly as I envisioned it. I purchased the Thule Xsporter Pro system for the rear which works well with only minor modifications to the truck. I can lower it easily so I can get the truck into the garage without removing the system altogether. I really like that the tailgate is still functional with the system installed as some others I had in mind were bumper or hitch attached and would not allow use of the tailgate.... And, lastly it looks nice enough to just leave it on all the time. On the front I chose the Yakima JetStream cross bar held up by a pair of Yakima SkyLine Towers and Landing Pads which I chose because I can easily remove the crossbar/towers to get the truck into my garage. The Landing Pads have covers for when not in use and are small enough to not be too noticeable. I also added the security locks for peace of mind. I have added 3 pictures, the first shows the Landing Pads without the towers & crossbar. You can also see the Xsporter Pro on the rear in its lowered position. The 2nd shot is a closeup of the Skyline Tower. The 3rd picture shows the entire system installed ready for my kayaks (or whatever). Thanks again to the folks at etrailer for their expert advice and customer service.

The product performs as advertised making rack install & removal quick & easy. I would prefer a two screw attachment to the roof yet that seems dictated by the vehicle.

The Yakima roof rack system is an Outstanding product. I purchased the product to replace the OEM roof rack because it was too flimsy to carry the tandem bike mount and my bike. The Yakima roof rack is solid and provides me the peace of mind while hauling my bike on the roof of my car. etrailer provided the product for the best price as always.

My experience with etrailer has been excellent. There was going to be a potential delay in one of the products, but their customer service promptly informed me, half the price of some of their competitors so can't really complain. In the end they got the part ahead of schedule and was able to ship in a timely manner. I will definitely keep them in mind for future purchases.

The rack looks to be excellent. The assembly is a nightmare. The instructions are terrible. The design for assembly is flawed. There is a stupid cover over the main bolt that you have to tighten. There is a video on Yakima’s website that kind of tells you how to get around it but not really. A 30 minute job took two hours.

Subaru stock roof rack was too low to accommodate a Roofnest. These landing pads towers work great and hold the Roofnest very tight when driving down the highway.

I needed to mount racks on my new topper. Though pricy, Yakima products are so well engineered it's worth it. Wish there was not such a long wait for back-ordered products, but that's not the fault of etrailer.com. Etrailer.com service is great. I especially like the instructional videos.

Easy to install. Not impressed with the fit though. The biggest selling point is being able to remove the towers and leave the pad though. Overall happy with the purchase.

This company is great! I was looking everywhere for a set of crossbars that would fit my pop up camper. After not being satisfied with the options I called the customer service line and spoke with Crystal. She was great at recommending which parts would work on my camper. I had a lot of questions and she answered them all. If she didn't know the answer she found out for me. I installed my new crossbars on my camper this afternoon and they fit perfectly! They're solid as a rock! I'm so excited to use them!

Yakima Landing pads are vehicle specific. Good quality mounts are supplied with good stainless steel fasteners. Required as a base for the towers.

At first, a little tricky to install, as the kit comes with hardware for a variety of applications (different length/size bolts, etc). But after a quick look at the directions and identifying which bolt to use for my car, install was a breeze. I love this Yakima setup because I can remove the bars/towers and leave the landing pads with a cap. Makes it great for taking the canoe out on weekend trips, but not taking the fuel-economy hit during the weekday commute to work.

Comments
After a year, the landing pads look like new and have worked out spectacularly. Ive tested the pads on/off the car, and they havent affected fuel economy aero drag at all, so I just leave them on. Id highly recommend these, and I appreciate etrailers video tutorial before I purchased the product!

Product worked well with my already installed Yakima rails and the towers attached to bars that I use on another vehicle. Easily installed. Now I can switch the kayak carrying Yakima bar and tower rigs from one vehicle to the other with minimal effort.

Very good product. The Yakama towers and cross bars feel very solid and appears to be high quality. Very easy install. Others have complained about the instructions, but guess I'm a visual person because the pictures all seemed very clear to me and the install was very easy. They do sit higher than I expected. After adding a Rhino Rack cargo basket, we only have about 4-5" clearance below the garage door.

Got another Subaru Outback and needed more roof rack capacity than the stock rack. The Yakima system fit the bill perfectly. The only hick-up has been the landing pad covers. Their click in holders need to be a little bit more robust. I have had a couple of them blow out. I will give etrailer.com 6 stars for their customer service.

  • Yakima Roof Rack Components Fit HD Bar Setup on 2020 Toyota Tacoma with Naked Roof
Yakima does have an HD roof rack that fits your 2020 Toyota Tacoma with a naked roof but the correct towers for your vehicle are the Baseline towers and not the Skyline. What you would need is the following components # Y01156, # Y00146, # Y03541, # Y06145, and # Y06128. The fit kit you mentioned does not fit your truck. Since you already have the bars you may not need the part # Y01156 as well.

  • Should you Fashion your Own Landing Pads
I would not recommend trying to fashion the Yakima Landing Pads 24, part # Y74FR, out of aluminum yourself. These fit kits have to be very precise, and trying to make one for yourself will definitely void any kind of warranty on the towers and crossbars. As for the strength, Yakima has been doing quite well over the years with improving the quality of their products, so you can rest assured that the material of the Landing Pads 24 is strong enough to handle the 165-pound limit of the...

  • Parts Needed to Install Round Bar Yakima Roof Rack on 2019 Toyota Tacoma
I can help you install the Yakima round bars you have on your 2019 Toyota Tacoma but Yakima actually no longer uses the Q Tower racks so the Q clips aren't available anymore and were never tested on your truck. So what you'd need is the # Y00148 for the towers, # Y03536 for the roundbar adapter, and Landing Pad 24 # Y74FR since you already have bars like the # Y00408.

  • Roof Rack & Attachments For 2010 Toyota Tacoma TRD SR5
I would get the Yakima HD Bar Roof Rack System. You'll need the HD bars # Y01156 Skyline Towers # Y00148 HD bar adapter # Y03541 and landing pad # Y74FR. You can then use the JayLow Kayak Carrier # Y04073, Off-Grid Cargo Basket # Y07139 or Skybox Cargo Box # Y07335. These are just my suggestions for accessories but there is much much more on our website if you're wanting something different!
