Note: This dual-arm rack reduces the need for a bike frame adapter bar (sold separately) to mount a children's, women's, or alternative frame bicycle. However, to mount certain bikes or to keep your bike level on the rack, a bike adapter bar may be required. Most step-through bikes, dual-suspension bikes, and small children's bikes will require a bike adapter bar.

For bike owners on a budget, the DoubleDown 4 is a safe bet. The DoubleDown 4 hitch mounted carrier features a four-bike capacity, a host of Yakima's standard amenities and a modest price tag that will satisfy anyone, from recreational riders to Tour de France trainees.

tilting mast

Designed for convenience above all, the dual-armed DoubleDown 4 has an upright bar - or mast - that tilts forward, away from the vehicle, allowing easy access to the rear cargo area. Perfect for owners with hatch-style rear doors, the mast is operated by a simple, spring-loaded pull pin and easily snaps back into place in upright position.

hitch tongue with sleevehitch tongue without sleeve

The DoubleDown 4 mounts into both 2" and 1-1/4" hitches right out of the box. The included steel sleeve converts the bike rack shank from a 1-1/4" to a 2" product in seconds.

mast with arms folded downclose view of button

The dual arms fold down for storage with a quick-release (TriggerFinger) button mounted on top of the mast. One push of the button and the arms fold to the sides of the mast. The arms click in place in both the "up" and "down" positions to ensure safe transport and storage.

close view of anti-sway cradles

The arms feature anti-sway (Standard SwitchBlade) cradles with a wide track for various bike frame sizes. Soft rubber straps secure your bikes to the cradles, and the anti-sway technology keeps the bikes from rocking back and forth. The distance between the bikes can also be adjusted by sliding the cradles along the arms. The cradles have a small switch that is used to lock them in the desired position.

narrow arm design

The narrow design of the dual arms allows the DoubleDown to accommodate a large variety of bike styles, reducing the need for bike adapter bars. The anti-sway cradles can easily be flipped in to make loading and unloading even easier.

sturdy hitch tongue

A heavy-duty (RocSteady) hitch tongue keeps both the carrier and your bikes stable during transport and features an anti-rattle device that reduces noise and movement in the hitch.

close view of bottle opener

The DoubleDown comes with a durable, powder coat finish and integrated bottle openers at the end of each arm. The DoubleDown 4 includes a standard hitch bolt and clip and is backed by a lifetime warranty.

Improve the security of your rack with an integrated DeadLock cable lock and hitch lock (Y02411), an optional HitchLock (Y07235), or a LockUp (Y07238) cable lock and hitch lock set.

Video Transcript for Yakima DoubleDown 4 Hitch Bike Rack Review

Today we are going to cover part number Y02424 from Yakima. This is their hitch-mounted bicycle carrier. This is their DoubleDown 4 Bike Carrier. We will cover some of the features of this bicycle rack. First off, this is a four-bike bicycle rack, and it does come standard with anti-sway cradles, and it does tilt down out of the way to get in the back of your SUV. And also, is is convertible between the 2-inch receiver and the 1-1/4 inch receiver. And we will show you how you do that, next.

It is pretty simple. You have this bushing right here that works in a 2-inch receiver, and to convert it back down to 1-1/4 inches for a Class II receiver, you undo this bolt right here. And there you have it, it is ready for a Class II receiver hitch. In our application, we are going to use it on a Class III receiver hitch, so we will reinstall the bushing. Also included in the bicycle rack are these three tools here. They help you assemble the bicycle rack, which is really easy. There are like, two or three bolts that you have to put together. And then it comes with a tool here, that you can use to tighten down the hitch bolt on the bicycle rack - plus the Allen wrench for the bushing. We will go ahead and install this bicycle rack in a typical 2-inch receiver hitch, and we will cover all the features of this rack in more detail.

Line up the hitch pin holes. You can install the hitch pin bolt from either side. Just thread it in to get it started. You can use the provided tool to tighten it down. Sometimes the hitch combinations do not allow you for a tool to work on there, so what you can use in its place is a 7/8-inch wrench or socket. All right, once you have it tightened down, you can go ahead and install the safety clip. All right, next we will show you the tilt feature of this bicycle rack. It is really easy to use. You simply pull up on this red button here and it allows the bicycle rack to fold back. And that way, you have easy access to the back of your minivan or SUV.

Next we will go ahead and show you the tilt feature of the arms. It helps to make a lower profile for easy storage. Pull toward you on this button, and the arms just fold down. And do the same thing to fold the arms back up. Next we will go ahead and install a bike and show you how it gets fitted onto the rack and you can see how it gets tied down to the rack. First, what you want to do is take off the straps on the cradle that you want to lift the bike on. We will use this one here. Now we will go ahead and install a bike and show you how to tie it back down. And on the anti-sway cradle, just push down until it meets the downtube and then just pull the strap around it. And the same thing applies to the other straps on the bike.

All right, we will go ahead and show you more detail of the cradles. First off, we will talk about this cradle here. This one does not have the anti-sway part of it but the other half does. And obviously you can tilt this from left to right and you can also move it from front to rear. And the cradles themselves have four points of contact for the strap itself, so you can move it around as you see fit. And inside the cradle, there are a couple of grooves that kind of hold the bike up away from the cradle a little bit, so that allows room for a cable so they do not get mashed up against the frame. And the other cradle here is the one with the anti-sway cradle. You can see how the arm comes down. And actually when this does that, it actually acts as a lock a little bit. It actually tightens up on the crossbar to keep the saddle from moving from front to rear. And when it is folded up, you can move it left and right pretty easily. And the best part of the bicycle rack is built-in bottle openers - great for the end of a long ride. And that covers our review of part number Y02424 from Yakima, their DoubleDown Bicycle Rack.

I bought this to carry four bikes when we go camping with our motorhome. It was easy to put together and is a nice rack for the price. It seems to be sturdy and we'll built. It tends to move around alot in a two inch receiver and I don't like the screw in receiver pin. I would like to use my own locking pin. Yakima makes it so if you want to lock it you have to buy their over priced lock. 399295

Bought this so my girlfriend could take her daughters riding on the rail trails a few miles away. It is heavy and requires a bolt to attach to receiver so I have to install it for them. They have no trouble loading/unloading although the first 2 bikes require two girls to load. They are unable to use the tilt down feature when it is loaded but use it all the time when empty. The bars are stored in the down position whenever unloaded. Good product although Heavy. 148895

This is an excellent bike rack. It definitely met my expectations. Sturdy and easy to install and use. The rack can be a little long when extended, so if you really don't need to transport more than two bikes on a regular basis, just go with the DoubleDown 2. 137391

Does it come with that bar that you have attached from your stem to the seat tube? I dont think the front triangle of either of my MTBs will fit.

Thanks for your question, but this bike rack does not include the adapter bar that is featured in Exteban's photo. However, the Yakima Tube Top Bike Adapter Bar # Y02531 is linked on the page as a related item. I would highly recommend using an adapter bar to carry your MTBs on any kind of hanging bike carrier.

Great bike rack, excellent fit/finish. Easy installation and it is well built. Go ahead and spend the extra money and get the good brand like this Yakima, you won't be disappointed. I wish I would have been told about the Yakima DeadLock when I bought this rack. I'm going to have to order it separately. I want to be able to secure the rack and bikes to my vehicle and you cannot do that without the deadlock. 42821

Tough choice for best bike racks for my Mazda CX5, overall went with the Yakima DoubleDown 4. I wanted something that could hold 4 bikes, hitch mounted and with good reviews. Also wanted a rack that could fold and tilt, and was looking for something with a built in hitch and bike lock. After reading everything and calling etrailer for help, the DoubleDown became my first choice. It had almost everything I was looking for, at a great price - except the inclusive hitch and bike lock. Which I purchased separately, installed very easily, and still ended up being cheaper than a few of the others I was considering. Had it for a week but just put it on today and will be putting 3 bikes on for about an hour long car ride this weekend. Love how easy it was to hook up, and the tilt is perfect for my vehicle. Will follow up after used a few months. 206992

we have been very busy biking!! The hitch was mounted on my 2008 Toyota RAV4. My husband removed the tie down plate on the drivers rear, then went to a friend who has a lift. They had the hitch on in about 15 minutes. The hardest part was the three holes that had to be tapped and threaded to receive the bolts to hold the hitch. It took about 15 minutes to install the bike carrier. We are very pleased with both items. 51649

After much research I decided to buy the towing hookup and hitch from etrailer. This went on my 07 XC90 and liked the fact that there was no cutting involved. The dealer's towing hitch required cutting into the bumper-go figure. I did not install this myself but the person who did said it was a breeze. He was able to hide the light hookup which is awesome since I will use this primarily for transporting bikes. I received my order (yahoo for free shipping!) 4 days after I placed my order. You can't beat the price, product quality and delivery at etrailer. I will definitely be recommending this site to everyone I know. Nice work etrailer! 45754

Rack is solid and securely holds our four bikes. That said, the rubber straps for securing the bikes are STIFF. It takes some muscle to hook them on. It's not as bad when it's 90 degrees out (they soften some), but be ready to sweat either way. I think I'd prefer ratcheting straps, but I have not owned a rack with these before. One other note is the pin is a bolt. eliminating rack "jiggling" while on the road relies on torquing the bolt. The rack is good and secure, but after driving several hundred miles (freeway and mountain roads), it did loosen. This isn't terrible assuming you have a lock installed. I mean, the rack won't completely fall off, but speed bumps and potholes are mighty noisy after it's loosened. Again, this was after hundreds of miles with a loaded rack, so take that for what it's worth. 277471

- Y02424

by:

This is a very difficult bike rack to use and I have not been pleased with it at all. It's is very difficult to get tight inside the hitch and if not tightened correctly every speed bump and pot hole your bike will bounce around A LOT! Also it is not easy to get your bike to the back slot closer to the car or more this one bike one the rack because you have to lift it up over the plastic bike holders and the very rubbery bands that strap the bike in place. The button that moves the rack up and down when not in use often sticks and you don't want to keep your bike rack up when not in use but when the button sticks sometimes you have not choice. I WOULD NOT purchase this item again and I would return if I could for a full refund. 262766

I ordered this on the 3rd of July and it arrived on the 5th of July. Amazing considering the 4th is a holiday. I wanted this model because I needed something that would carry at least 3 bikes. I am a weekend warrior and wanted something I could transporte my bike to the bike shop and to out of town rides. I ride with 2 other guys so this was perfect. My wife wanted something that was easy when she was taking the kids to the park to ride. The arm collapsing is great b/c it means we can leave it on overnight and still shut the garage door. Construction is very good. I am not worried that my expensive bike will be in any danger. Assembly was simple. I am not very mechanically inclined at all. From box to use involved 2 screws. It took literally 5 minutes. 47210

I had a few questions about which bike rack (and accessories) to order so I called etrailer to get their advice. I spoke with Jena who was very pleasant/helpful/knowledgeable. I was leaning toward the Yakima DoubleDown 4 Bike Rack and she convinced me it was a good choice. I also ordered the Yakima Deadlock Hitch Lock and a bike frame adapter bar so the bike rack could carry my wife's bike. Installation into my 2 inch hitch (which I also ordered from etrailer) was very straightforward and took about 15 minutes. I am very pleased with the bike rack. It is a well designed product with easy to use features. Both the tilt down feature (to allow access into my SUV's rear hatch) and the rack arm fold down are simple and easy to operate. So far I've only loaded one bike on the rack and I have only gotten up to 50 mph, but everything on that test drive was very stable. Looking forward to trying it out at highway speeds with all three bikes on it. 260144

Product works great. Took it with us on our vacation from PA up to VT with no issues. Fitting four on the rack is tight, three bikes is perfect. The one thing I would change is the bolt that secures the rack to the hitch. It's way too long for a 1 1/4 hitch opening. It almost doesn't make sense to use the clip to secure the bolt. 466383

We love our Yakima bike rack! It's easy for both my husband and I to use and feels really solid with all four of our bikes hooked up. We drove 11 hours with our bikes on the bike rack and felt at ease knowing the bikes were secure. We also like the convenience and ease of being able to lean the bike rack while still hooked up to our car to open the back hatch. Overall, the quality is outstanding and I would definitely recommend this product to people looking to travel with their bikes with complete peace of mind. 411986

The rack is very sturdy and will hold 4 bikes, with some minor bike adjustments, the only downside I can report after 1 year is that the rack cannot be locked with designed locking cap, easier to run long cable around bikes, rack and to hitch. 374657

The product is great. Assembly was easy and fit my Suv hitch. I haven't had any issues with mounting/dismounting bikes. I recommend ordering the extra locks that are available. They come in handy when your running errands and don't have time to off load bikes at home. Overall, I'm satisfied with my experience with Etrailer and would recommend to family and friends. 369602

This is a great quality product. The peace of mind attained when driving down the road, knowing that this bike rack and the equipment it carries are well-stowed is golden. From the hitch attachment, to the tilting mechanism, to the straps holding each bicycle in place, I have no doubt that everything will arrive at the destination safely. The rating is based on my opinion that spacing between bikes, when 4 are installed, is tight. My suggestion is to implement some form of styrofoam or towels between bicycles when transporting a full rack. 359000

This rack is sturdy and is relatively easy to use. It folds back to allow you to access your trunk/hatch without having to take the hitch completely off. I would likely but this hitch again. 308198

  • Best Way to Stabilize the Front Wheel when Carrying Bikes on the Yakima DoubleDown 4 Bike Rack
  • I would use a hook and loop strap, like the Softride Soft Velcro Tie Down for Bike Racks, # SR18679, to stabilize the front wheel of my bikes on a hanging rack like the Yakima DoubleDown 4 Bike Rack. These are also available in a 4 pack, # SR26260. You would just need to run the strap through the bikes front wheel and secure it around the bike frame. I illustrated this in a photo for you, see link.

  • Hitch Mounted Bike Rack and Ski Carrier Recommendation
  • For a hitch mounted ski and bike rack combo the best place to start is with an adapter like the Yakima HitchSki part # Y02418 that you referenced. This is a ski rack adapter for hanging bike racks. Next you would need a bike rack to use with this adapter. For that we have the Yakima FullTilt part # Y02462 for a tilting 4 bike rack. Or for a more budget friendly bike rack we have the Yakima DoubleDown part # Y02424.

  • How to Mount Bike Carrier Without Obstructing Rear License Plate from View
  • In many states if your rear license plate is obstructed from view by a bike rack, luggage rack or a similar device, a vehicle owner has the option to obtain a temporary license plate. This third license plate is a paper document that is placed on the interior of the vehicle's rear window in a manner clearly visible from the outside of the vehicle, but doesn't obstruct the driver's view out of the rear window. Another option is to use the bike rack you want to use and move the plate to...

  • Quality Hitch Bike Rack Recommendation for 4 New Mountain Bikes with Disc Brakes
  • The Saris Glide EX 4 Bike Rack, # SA774, is a very nice rack. It has some unique features like the arms that remain level when the rack is tilted away from the vehicle and the removable arms for ease of storage. This rack will fit in a Class II or larger hitch. Another 4 bike rack I would have you consider is the Yakima HoldUp, item # Y02443, along with the Plus 2 Adapter for HoldUp 2 Bike Carrier, 2 inch Hitches, item # Y02446. This rack is a wheel mount style for ease of loading and...

  • Bike Rack Lock For Trailer Hitch Mounted Yakima DoubleDown Bike Racks
  • The Yakima DoubleDown Bike Racks are uniquely threaded to work only with Yakima threaded hitch pins. To add a lock, you would need to use Yakima DeadLock Hitch Lock and Integrated Locking Cable, # Y02411. The Locking Anti-Rattle, Threaded Hitch Pin, # S64029, is designed for use with Swagman racks only so it will not fit the Yakima DoubleDown Bike Racks.

  • Will the Yakima DoubleDown or Thule Parkway Bike Rack be a Better Choice for the 2008 Ford Edge
  • In my opinion the Yakima DoubleDown 4 Bike Hitch Rack, item # Y02424, will be the better choice for your vehicle and bike carrying needs. This rack features all of the features of the Thule Parkway, item # TH957, and has the added feature of the SwitchBlade cradles that keep the bikes from swaying back and forth when taking off and stopping, which protects the bikes and the vehicle from damage. Thule also offers the Hitching Post Pro Bike Rack, item # TH934XTR. This bike rack has many...

  • Recommendation for 4 Bike Hitch Mounted Rack for a 2011 Honda Pilot with Class III 2 Inch Hitch
  • A good place to start for a 4-bike hitch rack for your 2011 Honda Pilot would be the Yakima DoubleDown 4 bike rack, part # Y02424. This bike rack has a weight capacity of 120lbs and has a tilting feature that allows you to lower the rack away from the vehicle for access to your rear cargo area. I am including a link to a video review of the Yakima bike rack. Another popular bike rack we sell is the Thule Parkway 4-bike Rack, part # TH956. This is also a tilting bike rack and has a weight...

  • Are There Trunk or Hatch Mounted Bike Racks Available for a 2005 Honda Odyssey
  • At this time the only trunk or hatch mounted bike racks available for the 2005 Honda Odyssey is the Hollywood Racks # HRF2 for 2 bikes or the # HRF3 for 3 bikes. It will mount to the rear hatch, crossbars, or existing rails on your Odyssey. There are other options available if you need to transport more that 2 bikes. The most versatile being a hitch and hitch mounted bike rack. A hitch will allow you to not only put a bike rack on your Odyssey, but also cargo carriers and many other...

  • Can a Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack # Y02443 be Converted to Work in a 1-1/4 Inch Trailer Hitch
  • The easiest solution would be to replace the Spine Assembly on your Yakima Holdup 2, # Y02443, with Yakima Replacement Spine Assembly, # Y80126. This will give your bike rack a 1-1/4 inch receiver without the use of an adapter (compatible with Class II trailer hitches only). The problem is that if you use an adapter, the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch is reduced by 50 percent. The bike rack, when loaded, will produce too much torque on the hitch and can damage it or the...

  • Anti-Rattle Device to Eliminate Movement of a Yakima DoubleDown Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack
  • The Yakima DoubleDown 4, # Y02424, comes with a hitch bolt that, when tightened, should relieve the play between the bike rack shank and the inside of the hitch receiver. What you can do to eliminate any additional sway would be to use a separate anti-rattle device. The Roadmaster Quiet Hitch, # RM-061, would be a good choice. It will hold the bike rack shank even tighter to the hitch receiver. I have included a link to a video showing how it works. Please note it is for a 2 inch receiver...

  • Comparing Thule Hitching Post And Yakima DoubleDown Hanging Bike Carriers On 2016 Honda Odyssey
  • The Thule Hitching Post, part # TH934XTR and the Yakima DoubleDown, part # Y02424 are both really nice bike carriers and would both do a nice job on your 2016 Odyssey. Both have anti-sway and both tilt away from the vehicle when empty for rear cargo area access. I recommend the Thule Hitching Post because it has a higher weight capacity at 35-lbs per bike where the Yakima DoubleDown has a weight capacity of 31-lbs per bike. One nice feature of the DoubleDown is the built-in bottle opener...

  • Bike Rack Options for a 2012 Toyota RAV4 with Swinging Rear Door
  • I have a few bike racks that will work with the swinging door on your 2012 Toyota RAV4, but hanging style bike racks like the Yakima DoubleDown 4 Bike Rack, # Y02424, would not be ideal for you. These bike racks do not fold down all the way, so you would not be able to completely open your rear door. Instead, I recommend looking into a swinging bike rack like the Yakima SwingDaddy, # Y02464. This bike rack will swing to the side to allow your rear door to open. I have attached a review...

  • How to Reduce Up an Down Play of the Yakima DoubleDown Bike Rack in CURT 1-1/4 Inch Hitch
  • The up and down play that you are experiencing is due to the tolerances that different manufacturers must allow to be sure that all accessories will work in conjunction with each other. In this case the hitch and bike rack are compatible but there is some play, and the distance that the bike rack sticks out from the rear of the vehicle amplifies that. This is why Yakima has a threaded hitch pin. This pin is designed to tighten the bike rack shank to the side of the hitch and the radius...

  • Will the Yakima DoubleDown 4 Bike Rack Accommodate Mountain Bikes With Angled Frames
  • The Yakima DoubleDown 4 Bike Rack, # Y02424, would be a great option to carry your bikes on your 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. The angled frames that you are referring to is a common issue that many mountain bikers run into. A lot of bike manufacturers are making what are called alternative bike frames for a more appealing look. You are going to run into the same issue with almost any bike rack that you choose. The best solution for you is to find the bike rack that you really like...

  • Will 4 Bikes On a Hitch Bike Rack Fit a 2012 Toyota RAV4 and Clear Rear Spare Tire on the Tailgate
  • You can carry 4 bikes on your 2012 Toyota RAV4 if you choose a Class III 2 Inch hitch like the Draw-Tite Hitch, part # 75235. The Class III hitch will have a maximum tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs. Usually the way to determine if a hitch bike rack will clear your spare tire is to take a measurement on your 2012 Toyota RAV4 from the center hole of the hitch pin hole on the hitch, out to the distance required to clear the spare tire. Since you do not have a hitch already on your...

  • How Does the 2 inch Adapter Attach to the Yakima DoubleDown Bike Rack
  • Your Yakima DoubleDown part # Y02424 did come with a 2 inch adapter like the part # Y8890174 that you ordered. The adapter is held in place on the shank of your rack with an Allen bolt. You would just need to line up the bolt holes and tighten the bolt into the adapter and you would be good to go. At the 18 second mark of the video I attached you can see how the adapter installs.

  • Recommended Replacement Hitch Pin For Yakima DoubleDown Hitch Mounted Bike Carrier
  • Since most bike carrier manufacturers use proprietary threads for their bike carrier like the Doubledown, part # Y02424, the dimensions are not freely acquired. If you are looking for a locking hitch pin that will work for your DoubleDown carrier I recommend part # Y07235.

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for Carrying 4 Bikes Behind a 2004 Aerolite Cub Hybrid Travel Trailer
  • We have several bike racks that are recommended for use behind a travel trailer, see link. For 4 bikes, I would select the Swagman Hitch Bike Rack, # S64400, and the RV Bumper 2 inch Trailer Hitch Receiver, # E-100, if the trailer bumper is a 4 inch square all steel channel bumper. This bike rack measures 13 inches from the center of the first hitch pin hole to the back of the upright bar, so it will clear a spare tire as long as the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the...

  • Bike Rack Secured with Standard 5/8 Inch Hitch Pin
  • The Yakima DoubleDown, part # Y02424 cannot be used with a standard hitch pin. Yakima uses a threaded bolt to secure the shank of the DoubleDown into the receiver. When this bolt is drawn tight, it forces the shank of the bike rack up against the side of the receiver eliminating any rattling around that a rack secured by a standard hitch would experience.
