Video Transcript for Swagman XP Folding Hitch Bike Rack Review

Today well be reviewing the Swagman XP folding three bike carrier for inch and a quarter and two inch hitches, part number S64950. Normally, well load the bike on the cradles closest to the vehicle, but for todays demonstration purposes we will be loading the bike on the end cradles so you can see the function of the bike rack. This bike carrier features a heavy duty steel design that carries up to three bikes. Note that vehicles with Class I hitches will be limited to two bikes. Before we begin our review, well first show you how to remove the two inch adapter for our bike rack. Well use the included Allen key to take out the bolt of the shank of the carrier.

Now, for todays review, we will be using the vehicle that is equipped with a two inch hitch, so well put the adapter back on. To begin our review, well start by installing the carrier to the vehicle. Well slide the shank of the carrier into the opening of the hitch, line up our pin holes, thread our anti-rattle bolt through the pin holes and tighten with a wrench. You can also lock this bike carrier to your vehicle with the Swagmans anti-rattle hitch lock, sold separately, part number S64029. The cradles on the XP secure the bikes to the rack using thick Kreton vinyl cushioning and steel plates.

The deep flexible grooves help prevent cables from scratching the frame of your bike. The cushioning helps keep bikes from swaying front to back. The cradles on the XP also rotate left to right to accommodate many alternative and womens frames. The rack also tilts forward. You can do this by pulling the silver pin at the base of the carrier to tilt it down.

Now that weve gone over some features and specs, and showed you how to install the Swagman XP, well show you how to load our bike. Well loosen up the knob and pull off the plate, and set the frame of the bike into the cradle. Well insert the plate back into the cradle and use the knob to tighten the plate down to the top of the frame of the bike to secure the bike to the carrier. Well then use the locking knob to prevent the bike from being stolen. Normally well load the bike on the cradles closest to the vehicle, but for todays demonstration purposes we will be loading the bike on the end cradles so you can see the function of the bike rack.

With our bike secured to the vehicle well go ahead and show you how it looks driving down the road. That completes todays test fit of the Swagman XP folding three bike carrier for inch and a quarter and two inch hitches, part number S64950.

I am very happy with this bike rack. It has served me well so far. It was easy to put together and its really simple to use. However I was not happy to see that both of the bolts at the bottom were quick release. Sure the bolt that lets the rack pivot down should be quick release but the other bolt should be permanent to stop theft. I fixed the problem myself by buying a regular bolt and nut from hardware store and welding the nut on. I'm sure not everyone is capable of that though. Overall I think the rack is great and I would definitely recommend it. 99454

Great bike rack! Previously used a roof rack. Chose a trailer hitch rack this time because of appearance and noise issues. There's a bit of a learning curve in placing the clamps at the appropriate angle. Each bike has a different top tube angle, requiring a different angle for the clamp. These angles have to be worked out before you can place the bikes in the clamps without tangling components. Once you've got a system worked out, it's smooth sailing. My bikes are secure on this rack. Great price too. 84848

The bike rack is fabulous. Used it this weekend to carry three bikes 5 hours one way. Very strong and sturdy. The bikes sit in a vinyl/rubber padded cradle that is held down by a top plate that you screw down - very securely fastened. You can lock the outermost bike thus keeping all the others bikes free from theft. The etrailer folks made the order and delivery process exceptional. Great communication all the way from ordering to delivery to the door. 159239

This rack is well-made, but there are a couple details that made it completely unusable for us. 1. You can't put more than one woman's-style bike on the rack. The position of the frame tubes on the women's models makes it impossible to fit the bike over the rack unless it is at the end position. 2. The clamps are a good idea, but don't fit bikes with bigger frame tubes. Our bikes are from Target, so they're pretty mainstream, and they still didn't work. 20573

Ladies bikes have a bit of a non-typical frame for the most part. Mounting them to a rack becomes a lot easier with the use of an adapter bar. It helps to provide a place to hang the bike level on the rack which in turn puts the handle bars where they should be. Check out part 64005.

We also bought the trailer hitch to fit our 2010 Honda CRV. Both pieces arrived in a few days, and my husband installed both this weekend. The video installation instructions made it easy to follow and installation was complete in a half hour or so. Both the hitch and the rack are well made, heavy, and look great on the back of our car. I'm excited to take our bikes out -- finally, instead of stuffing them in the back of the car with folded seats. 25311

Fast shipping..great email communication from the minute my order was placed to the delivery at my door which only took 2 days! The bike rack was better than I expected. Heavy duty. rubber inserts lining the cradles are very strong..design is excellent. Once we got the right distance between cradles adjusted our 3 bikes fit perfectly! The YouTube video was very helpful ! I would highly recommend this bike rack and etrailer.com! 5 stars!! 51149

We received the bike rack earlier than promised and we are extremely happy about that. It took less than 15 minutes to put the rack together and it was very easy to install on the hitch. We are raising our 10 year old grandson and he will be using the rack to haul his bikes to his BMX races. Thank you etrailer for providing excellent service and quality products. 19346

It has far more features than the competing Thule or Yakima models. It has a much better design for holding the bikes in their cradles, far more secure and much more durable. 6386

Review from a similar Swagman XP in Hitch Bike Racks

Purchased this after reading some of the other reviews and Q&A on etrailer - i hadn't thought about the fact that how the crossbars on the bike are configured makes a difference - 3 of our 5 bikes wouldn't have fit on a two bar bike rack because the openings are two small (I ended up measuring them before selecting a rack). I still ended up having to use the adapter for one of them which works great. Installation was easy (I had uhaul put a receiver hitch on my 2012 odyssey the week before) - you do have to pull a pin on the bottom of the rack when you tilt it, which some might consider an inconvenience compared to some of the other brands that just have release levers, but i view it as less stuff to break compared to those racks. If you're going to have it on a lot and park in a garage, consider the fact that it doesn't collapse because it does add significant length to the vehicle. 5 bikes are definitely doable if you set it up correctly. I think its the most versatile rack you can get based on the way it holds the bikes and would definitely recommend. 145641

Comments

i actually just put it on again this morning - we love it, i think the only thing i would say is that i wish there was some way to keep it a little tighter in the receiver hitch. the bolt tends to loosen after a bit of driving - nothing unsafe, just makes it sway and bounce a bit more and needs to be retightened.

Review from a similar Swagman XP in Hitch Bike Racks

So far, so good. I just received this last week and installed it on the back of my fifth wheel. We have four bikes (2 adult bikes and two kids bikes), and fitting all four of the bikes on the racks took some creativity but it was possible. The rack seems very sturdy, but we will see if it stands the test of time as we are full-time RVers who travel about 6,000 miles per year. Our last bike rack (Swagman XTC4) was completely worn out after about 14,000 miles of use on the back of our fifth wheel. 152648

Comments

After one year, this bike rack is still performing very well on the back of our fifth wheel. We have travelled over 5,000 miles with our bikes in tow, and it still looks and operates like brand new. I was able to make four full-size bicycles fit on it, but you have to be creative.

How is your hitch fastened to your fifth wheel?

In response to Richard N., we had a 2 hitch receptacle installed on the rear of our fifth wheel when we ordered it from the factory. The bike rack is installed by sliding it into the hitch receptacle.

Review from a similar Swagman XP in Hitch Bike Racks

After reading the reviews, my husband I bought this bike rack for our 2009 RAV4 knowing full well that we were going to be unable to open the cargo door when the bike rack was mounted. So I want to be clear that we are ok with that less than perfect feature, while at the same time let others with a RAV4 know that this is how this bike rack will work with a RAV4 if they get this rack. Also in regard to the complaint about the bolt that inserts in the hitch receiver, I would like to add that the Kotter pin that mounts on the end of this bolt does not stay on well, but the threads in the bolt if tightened well, look like they will hold if the pin is lost. I would like to also point out that there is not a plate on either end of the rack where the 3 bike cradles mount, so if the U-bolts on the cradles come lose, you could either lose a bike or have one slide off the back and hit the spare tire carrier on the RAV. Now with all that said, here's the good so far....once the bolt is tightened in the hitch receiver pin hole, there is absolutely no wobble in the rack. My women's coaster bike fit in the cradle just fine without an adapter. The shipping time was super fast and although the box looked like it had been to war, it was still sealed and intact and the rack arrived in good shape. Since the rack just arrived yesterday, we have not yet had time to road test the bike rack on the back of the RAV loaded with bikes yet. One other selling point for us was the fact that this rack can be used on the back of an RV also. 184400

Review from a similar Swagman XP in Hitch Bike Racks

After researching the multitude of bike racks available, Pat at etrailer spent over 30 minutes with me on the phone answering my questions about which would be the best rack for our SUV and our particular bike styles. We settled on the Swagman XP 4-bike rack. The cradles are adjustable and be rotated so that the wheels of any bike can be kept parallel to the ground regardless of the angle of the bike frame. It worked as advertised, and I can 100% recommend etrailer as a very reliable source. The people there are interested in helping you, and they deliver. Great company! 81561

Still perfect. Our bike trip last July to Montana and Idaho was a great test of the Swagman bike rack. We had four bikes totaling 80 pounds and had absolutely no issues. With the U brace keeping the rack base tight against the hitch, there was no wobbling at all. A great trip was made better by having the peace of mind provided by a sturdy rack to safely transport our bicycles. Thank you etrailer!

The service from etrailer was awesome. I ordered on a weekend and yet by Sunday night I had an email saying the product was shipped. On top of that the shipping was upgraded at the same cost.... FREE! The Bike Rack is great. Went together easily and is very heavy duty. The only problem I have and it was anticipated is that my bike frame is not round, it is oval shaped and it barely fits into the gripper. But as I said I expected it to be close from the product description. This rack should give me many years of service and I highly recommend it and etrailer!! 91987

Review from a similar Swagman XP in Hitch Bike Racks

Bought this to take the bikes for my family of four on vacation and I have only used it three times in the last 12 months, the most recent just a week ago. I remain completely happy with my purchase. The ability to angle the brackets allows me to easily fit our 4 bikes (adult male, adult female, 12 yr male, 10 yr female). My wife's bike fits okay without an adapter, but my daughter's bike required a bar adapter since the space between her frame would not fit over the brackets. One thing to note, to get my wife and sons bikes on, I have to remove the brackets for the bikes in front of them. Don't be stubborn, just do this. I scratched the frames putting them on the first time without removing the other brackets, and it ended up taking longer fighting them on. This is because of the way her bike frame is built and his is simply smaller. I am considering buying the bar adapters for them as well just to avoid having to remove the brackets, but we don't really use it enough yet to purchase them. My bike, with the wider frame, goes on quickly and easily. Tip: Take a picture of how you fit the bikes on! It will save you having to figure it out again the next time. 410383

Ordered this bike rack, the locking / anti rattle / threaded hitch pin, & the adapter for an alternative frame bike. Very impressed with e-trailer dot com. Price was great. The order shipped quickly & arrived early. It was securely packed. Did A LOT of research & chose this bike rack as it was one of the few that was approved by the manufacturer for RV use. The bike rack went together fairly easily. The wife helped me as it was good to have a 2nd set of hands. Hint: I started assembling it on the garage floor but it's easier to do in a hitch insert. Finally used it on our class C RV this past weekend. All in all, no complaints. The wife was driving behind me & said the bike rack was fairly steady. Pleased with e trailer dot com & the bike rack! 57797

Review from a similar Swagman XP in Hitch Bike Racks

We have not got to use this bike rack yet. We fitted it to our Rav 4 and are very happy with the tight fit. The rack is very well built and sturdy. Passes the spare tire on the back of the Rav with plenty of room to spare. Also it appears to have plenty of clearance at the bottom of the rack. Our last rack fit loosly in the receiver and the bike moved quite a bit. Hopefully this one will reduce the bike movement. Also it does not tell you on the site that we could find but this rack may be used for 1, 2 or 3 bikes. 52298

we have a rav 4 with the swing door 2009 and the spare in the case. We also have a trailer 2 receiver on the rav does this rack work well for our application ?

-- comment by: Guy S - 06/15/2014

You will need to measure the distance to the from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer edge of your spare tire cover. This will tell you how much clearance you will need for the Swagman Bike rack to work with your vehicle. If this measurement is less than 13-1/2 inches this bike rack will work great for you.

Review from a similar Swagman XP in Hitch Bike Racks

I purchased the Swagman because I needed a bike rack that was rated for a travel trailer and would take my bike plus three girls' bikes. It took me hours to figure out how to make it work, but I finally got it. It's hard to use and you have to take all the bikes on and off in order. I've since seen better and more easily use-able bike racks and ones that adjusts to fill your tow receiver better (reducing sway). The knob with the key doesn't tighten down or work very well. Review from a similar Swagman XP in Hitch Bike Racks

I did a lot of research on the different styles of bike racks that are out there. I love the way the Swagman XP you can clamp down your bike and lock it, without any worries of scratching your bike frame and it hold the bike in very secure. Not a big fan of the ones with a rubber band that holds your bike in place. I'm very happy with my purchase and as well the delivery time to my house. I would recommend this one to all of my friends that are looking for a killer bike rack and hope they make the Swagman XP their first choice. 205708

Product is fantastic, fast delivery. Outstanding support prior to sale by Julie M. prior to the sale. Had a unique situation as I was hanging my folding bikes so the frame configuration was a bit different. I was able to put them on and they are very secure, and everything is good on the back of my Casita travel trailer. 92727

Review from a similar Swagman XP in Hitch Bike Racks

Have only used it to secure 2 bikes so far but it has performed as advertised on our RV. I have the 2" hitch & considered the anti-rattle attachment but after reading reviews on that piece of equipment (doesn't eliminate up & down movement) decided against it. Tightened per instructions & had no side-to-side movement; slight up & down doesn't worry me as the unit appears to be very structurally sound. Still wish there was a unit appropriate for an RV that could rotate or sway to allow access to rear compartment. 19134

Quality built. Drilled holes 6" from pin hole provided. Now it slides all the way in my hitch receiver bringing it closer to my tailgate making it extremely sturdy. My mountain bike has the the oblong frame & this carrier can hold it securely in place. I'm glad I found etrailer when I searched in Google. Great value for the price, received shipment in 5 days and was obvious someone went to great length to secure it so it did not shift in transport. I'm sure this carrier will last us many miles and years Thanks. 175710

Product ordered easily online, confirmation of order and expedited delivery at no charge to us was just wonderful. We were able to install the bike rack on the back of the RV with no problem. Bike with the bar fit very nice. We liked the ability in the tilt of the bike and the obvious great quality of the unit . We have not travelled yet so we can keep you posted. But we do not expect any problem . Very good company to do business with on the internet. I will refer to friends... thanks 64830

Just received the bike rack and put it together. It was an easy assembly, but had trouble getting the rubber liners back into the pin slots after bolting the carrier to the rack arm. Other than that, no issues. Appears to be well built and sturdy. Had read reviews about other racks and fabication issues and such, but really thought this was a well fabiricated product and had no assembly issues except the rubber liner clips. No complaints at this point. Appears to be a good product. 47649

1st thing-- only buy this unit is your looking for a RV hitch. Forget Yakima, Thule, etc. I have broken two of the other brands!! Little downside is that this is really a 3 bike rack. Top arm should be 2" longer if you don't want your bicycles banging together. They should make some changes to the bolts that tighten down the holders, or instead you leave the knobs on other wise you will scratch your bicycles knocking them on the bolts. 98181

Well we just tried out the swagman 4 bike hitch this weekend and overall it worked well. We used it on our 2009 flagstaff tent trailer which had a factory installed receiver hitch on the back. We had no problems at all however that being said the hitch does not work really well with bike wheels over 26 it just does not leave enough clearance from the road to the tire. Other than that I would recommend this hitch for use with a tent trailer. 47166

It's a sturdy product, but if you bike with a lot of women, like I do, I would not recommend it. I could only get one woman's bike on the rack, because it won't go past the back wall of the first tray. If a woman's bike has a water bottle holder on the frame, its even less likely to fit. I suppose an adapter bar would fix this problem, but if you're going to get adapters anyway, you might as well start off with a cheaper rack. 35762

Worked great. very stable during trip. (I mount it in front for truck). I did have to go buy the bar adapter so I could mount and carry my wife's woman's bike. I tried several ways at first to carry without. Couldn't make it work with my bike and son's bike. Adapter bar worked perfectly. Cost another $29 at bike store. I sure etrailer carry's it but needed it right away. I love the simple engineering. 144026

Just unpacked and put together the Swagman XP 3 bike carrier. Used it once and it seems to be made very well. Holds the bikes firmly; doesn't seem that the bikes jostle around like my previous carrier. - Very pleased with the ease of order and timeliness of shipping. It was straightforward and very quick - The bike rack was easy to assemble and looks good. We've got a number of different cable locks, but the one that will work best is Swagman part # S64030
Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock and Cable for Swagman Bike Racks w/ 2" Shanks - 8-1/2' Long
$46.24
. Swagman designed for their racks and this kit includes a lock and cable that will lock both the bikes and the rack.

  • Bike Rack Recommendations for Use With a Trek Triathlon Tri Bike Frame
  • I did some research on your trek triathlon tri bike and the Swagman XP 3 Bike Rack, # S64950, will work as long as the horizontal tube on your bike is not wider than 1-3/4 inches and taller than 1-3/4 inches. If the horizontal tube on your bike is wider or taller than those measurements, then you will still be able to use this bike rack, but you will need the Swagman Easy-Out Adapter, # 64005, for womens bikes and alternative bike frames.
