Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Feed the cable through the connection loop

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then feed the extra cable through the second loop to keep it from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Optional rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

They worked when we needed them. We were caught in a sudden snow storm on the I-5 in Weed CA along with hundreds of other cars. We made it off the freeway to a motel and enjoyed the rest of the night in a warm motel room.

2017 Toyota Sienna

Great product. Did a dry run in preparation for a trip up to Yosemite in the winter. I purchased these w/ the Titan Chain Multi-Arm Rubber Tire Chain Adjuster (TCMA2) and it fit great on my 2017 Toyota Sienna SE (P235/50R19). The installation video on etrailer.com was VERY helpful.

2016 Honda CR-V

Great, the only thing i was curious about was the rubber tie downs. I am asuming the chains will fit tight enough not to need them?

Comments
Rubber adjusters, that are sold separately, are recommended, as the chains you purchased do not have self-tightening cams or adjusters. Here are some for size 15-18 inch rims: item # PW105

2020 Airstream Caravel Travel Trailer

These appear to be a great product with outstanding customer service by etrailer. I have not used them yet, and honestly I hope I never do! But they arrived quickly in a handy soft storage case with room for a pair of tighteners. I'll put them is a storage area of my 19' Airstream for emergency use. The fastening system is straightforward and simple to use with the limited clearance in my wheel wells.

Great product!
I was worried the cables
will scratch the alloy wheels on my 2011 MB E350 (it is the Sport model with low profile tires), but all works very well! I just used them last week at Tahoe, and they performed perfectly! Make sure to tighten the cables all the way up, on the last metal stud.

by:

Easy to put on; and they work.

by:

I initially purchased the tire chains for use on a trip from Texas to Washington state in October of 2020 but had decent weather and did not need them until a snow storm hit southern Texas this past spring. I had no trouble traveling to and from work during the bad weather. If I did not have the chains, I would not have been driving.

2011 Volvo S60

Test fitted on 2011 Volvo S60. Fits OK, fits great with one of those rubber spider web fasteners; they sell them on [online[ and etrailer. I hope I don't have to use them but if I do, who's know, I might be back. Shipping and customer service A+ as always

by:
Infiniti Q50

My Infiniti Q50 has limited clearance for the tires which prevents use of standard tire chains. The Glacier S class cable chains that I purchased can be used with the tires on my car without any problem.

Have tested for fit, but have not used them as yet due to a very mild winter. Will provide a more in depth review once I use them.

2017 Subaru Forester

Needed chains for my Subaru Forester to meet the legal requirement that I have traction devices when I go to the mountains and to get me out of trouble in an emergency. I don't actually plan on ever using them.

I immediately installed them to make sure they fit (etrailer guarantees they will) and to make sure I know how to put them on. The instructions were clear and installation was easier than any other chains I've used. I'm not sure if they would stand up to a lot of use, but they meet my needs.

Luckily, I havent had to use them.

Tire cable chains arrived in excellent condition. Got these as a just in case item so haven't had a chance to try them out yet. Fit in the driveway is as advertised. Our experience with ETRAILER has always resulted in great service, the orders are always shipped expeditiously and we’ve never had any problems. That’s why we’re repeat customers.

Comments
We purchased these as a just in case we need them item. So far we have not had to put these cable chains to the test yet.

They fit perfectly. I used a 6” long 2x4 placed in between the cross link, rolled up on the 2x4 and installed the chains. Easy!

Ford Escape

As a woman who needs to use these type of chains due to a neighborhood road that terribly ices when it thaws and rains, they work great to keep me from sliding off the road. I own a Ford Escape and can get these on and off with a little work. My only complaint is that last year these chains were recommended for my vehicle and this year your website says I should not be using these chains, but some other model by Glacier. And one other thing that is totally my fault, is that I bought them last year, but did not need to use them so I never put them on my vehicle, so I did not know that they barely fit my tires even though they were supposed to be the correct size for my tires. I am only able to put them on the first link lock thingy and I use the spreader star bungie, so that makes them tight enough for me to drive out of our neighborhood and get to the paved road to take them off. It would be best if I had a little more tightening chain to work with, but that's on me for not trying them on the tires when I got them last year.

2015 Subaru Outback Wagon

These chains actually fit the front wheels of my Subaru Outback. (225/65-17) Unlike the "EZ" chains I'd previously bought from online-retailer "A," these chains have inner and outer cables with a sufficient length (circumference) to sit at the widest part of the tire as opposed to the other chains I'd ordered from brand "A" that, at the cross-link points, fell inside the 17" wheel diameter, and therefore interfered with the suspension components of the front wheels.

I'll admit that the split chains that DIDN'T work for me were much easier to install, and they appeared to be of a little sturdier constructions, than the PW1042 chains that I now have, but I couldn't get circumference information for the other company's chains, or confirmation that they'd fit my car, not just my tires.

The pw1042 chains have equal-length inside and outside cables, and they are adjustable, so I can make sure that the inside cable is snug enough, but well clear of the car's suspension. The other company's "EZ" chains offered no such adjustment. I'll probably be using the second notch on the inside of the tires, and then the third or fourth notch on the outside of the tires. The rubber adjusters that I also bought will take up any (not much) slack that there is.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Bought a new pair of Glacier spring tire cables with the adjusters. They arrived in California within a few days. Product purchased for our 2017 Subaru Outback since these are the only authorized tire traction devices for Subaru vehicles. Sold our former Outback after 17 years and 200,000 mile of excellent service. These are almost never necessary on Subaru cars with the rare exception of ice ink conditions on which you can't even stand up. The CHP flags Subaru cars thru without added traction devices because they really aren't needed. A CHP officer once flagged us out of a line of cars being turned around in Truckee when I-80 was closed over Donner Summit because of too much snow and motioned that we were the exception to the rule and were cleared to head on home.

Subaru Forester

OK I gave the chains five stars without really trying them out. I gave the 5 stars for customer service and speed with which I received the product, also for their website that made it easy to find the right product.

I purchased these for s Subaru Forester that regular chains don't work. We are headed to Colorado where chains or socks are relied to be in your car during winter months. I was leaning towards tire socks until I did some research and found the Utah does not consider socks as adequate.

These chains, from the video seem to as easy to use as possible. Personally I hope I never need to use them!

by:

I actually never used the cables. I am giving them a 5 star based solely on the simple instructions and the ease I had to "practice" putting on the cables before my trip. On my trip, we did encounter snow, but California Highway Patrol was not mandating personal vehicles to install chains.
The piece of mind that I had, was enough to justify the purchase. It chains would have been required, my family would have been safe. Thank you

They work great! We are going to order another pair. Wish we had known this because we wouldn’t have to pay for shipping twice. But the chains work and were delivered on time!

I just received the tire cables from etrailer today. This is my third order from etrailer. What I like is that the cables and chain before all came in a nice storage bag. The chains and cables all fit my Subaru cars as expected. Also like the fast service..

2019 Subaru Crosstrek

I ordered a set of Glacier snow cables for my Subaru Crosstrek. Ordering was so easy and fast and the sale price resulted in a very good value. The information on line made the ordering so easy. Delivery came on the promised date - and although I have not had the opportunity use yet - I watched the videos and will practice soon. I will also re-watch the videos so I am familiar when I do have a trip finalized and I am sure things will work well. Thank you etrailer for making this purchasing experience very easy, fast and with a good product delivered.

Excellent Customer SeviceI live in Florida and our family is taking a ski trip to the mountains of North Carolina. Last year, we drove to Greensboro in our van but rented a 4WD vehicle to drive to the mountains. This year we want to avoid that hassle so snow chains were a must-have precaution. The etrailer.com web site was very easy to navigate to find the correct products. Email communication from etrailer.com was continuous and prompt throughout the entire order, shipping, delivery process. The chains shipped quickly and I received them very fast. As the instructions suggest, I have "dry-fit" the chains in my driveway before actually needing them. They fit perfectly and are very easy to install. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure I even needed the rubber adjusters because I can only stretch the adjuster to attach to the chains at two points (the adjusters have five hooks). I have not used the chains to drive in the snow yet and I’m hoping I won't need to use them during our trip. But if I do need them, I am prepared and ready to go thanks to etrailer.com

by:

Theses cables worked perfectly. They were easy to install and use. I hated using chains on my last vehicle but these cables were great. Very little noise and the van handled good with them on.
This was a great investment. I'm about to start using them again for this year.

  • Things to Consider when Buying a Winter Tire for a 2012 Honda CRV
It depends on the clearances you have in your wheel well, the 235/70R16 will be 20 mm wider and little bit taller. However, for snow driving you actually want to go with a skinnier tire as it will cut through the snow better and give you better traction. If there is a smaller size available in a winter tire for your vehicle I would recommend that over the wider one. Any time you change the overall diameter of a tire you will need to reprogram the computer of the vehicle so that the speedometer...

With snow chains and cables you would want to take them off whenever they aren't needed for a couple reasons. First, they would wear out very quickly this way. Especially since they would be used on dry pavement. And secondly because with snow chains you shouldn't drive faster than 30-35 miles per hour. • Are Snow Tire Chains And Cables Compatible With Radial Tires
The Glacier V-Trac Cable Snow Tire Chains, part # PW1042, are compatible with radial tires. Snow chains or cables may cause cosmetic scuffing of tires when installed. By design, most standard snow tire chains or cables must hang down (drape) the side wall of the tire in order to stay on the tire while being used. As a result, radial tires may also experience some minor scuffing of the tire side wall as a result of the flex...

  • Tire Chains Compatible with 275/35R18 Tires on 2005 Jaguar S-Type R
The Glacier V-Trac Cable Snow Tire Chains - 1 Pair # PW1042 are compatible with your 275/35-18 tires. You will simply want to make sure you have a minimum of 1.46 inches between the top of the tire tread and wheel well and at lease 0.59 inches between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle. • Snow Cable Set to Get 2018 Tesla Model S Through Tire Chain Check Points 245/45-19
The Glacier tire cables part # PW1042 are a confirmed fit for the tire size you have on your 2018 Tesla Model S. For what you'd need them for these are a great solution. They'd get you past chain check points and would also work great if you were to ever get caught in snow. These are also Class S compatible too which means they require minimal clearance to fit. I attached a review video for these for more info as well.

  • Recommended Snow Tire Chains for a 2017 Mini Countryman
According to the owner's manual for your 2017 Mini Countryman, traction devices such as tire chains must be Class S compatible, installed on the front two wheels, and only for use on 205/65-16 and 205/60-17 tires. With that being said, I understand certain states require the use of tire chains. Therefore, should you decide to use a set of tire chains anyway, the correct set to fit the 225/80-18 tires on your vehicle are listed in the linked page for you. For a set of tire chains that...

  • Tire Cable Recommendation for Tire Sizes 225/70R16 and 235/70R16
The cables part # PW1042 that you referenced do fit both tire sizes you mentioned of 225/70R16 and 235/70R16 so this would be a great solution that would work now and possibly later. Cables like this are a great emergency solution to have but not something you would want to rely on for regular use.

  • Should Tire Chains be Used on All 4 Wheels of a 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 with Front Wheel Drive
Tire chains or cables such as # PW1042 should go on the main drive wheels of a vehicle. Since your 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 is a front wheel drive model the chains or cables would go on the front wheels. Since the rear wheels are not drive wheels or on a steering axle there isn't much benefit to having them on the rear. Be sure to consult the vehicle owner's manual for additional information on the use of traction devices.

I attached the install video below that shows this. We do have to recommend you stick with whatever the vehicle manufacturer recommends for restrictions on tire chains as well.
