Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter

Say your truck has a gooseneck hitch for towing your horse trailer, but you want to go camping with your new fifth wheel. You could outfit your truck with a new fifth-wheel hitch that attaches to your existing gooseneck hitch, but that means having to move a heavy, bulky hitch into and out of your truck bed all the time.

You could also purchase an adapter that bolts onto your trailer's existing pin box. But adding a new component to your setup can keep your pin box from working how it was designed. King pin adapters can create a stiff ride and can even strain your fifth wheel's frame by adding too much height at the connection point.

A better option is to use this gooseneck-compatible pin box to easily tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your truck's gooseneck hitch. The box replaces your trailer's existing pin box, which means it's designed to act as a part of your trailer instead of simply bolting over your king pin like an adapter does.

Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

Executive torsion with cable

If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.

This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box adapter. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the coupler tube, which connects to the gooseneck hitch ball in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the coupler tube will move accordingly.

torsion diagram

Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler end moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the coupler's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

  • Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter to Replace Lippert 1621 Pin Box
Looks like you have a Rotoflex pin box and installed a Convert-A-Ball adapter part # CAB-C5G on it which isn't supposed to happen. The king pin plate flexes and causes the issue you have. If you can get me the pin box part numbers you see on it I can see what adapter solutions you have.

Hey David, from previous customers of ours who have the same 2020 Keystone Raptor 424 we have determined that your pin box style is the Lippert 1621 which means for a Gen-Y gooseneck adapter you'd want the # GY38FR that you referenced.

  • How to Find Gen-Y Gooseneck Pin Box Adapter for a 2021 Grand Design Reflection 31MB
Hey Brad, thanks for reaching out! What pin box number do you currently have installed on your 2021 Grand Design Reflection 31MB? You should find a sticker with a number like "1621" or even a serial number and the brand would work. Not all 5th wheel trailers come with the same pin box but once I have the info listed above I'll be able to help you find the correct Gen-Y gooseneck coupler. For example, the Gen-Y Hitch 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY38FR will replace a 1621 or 1621HD...

  • What Gooseneck Adapter Do I Need For A MORryde Cushioned Pin Box?
Hello Greg. I do have a potential solution for you, but the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter # CAB-C5G that you were looking at will not work for this purpose. Reason being that this kind of adapter is not compatible with a cushioned pin box. Your best option will be to replace your MORryde cushioned pin box with a goosebox like the Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY38FR. Keep in mind that these gooseboxes are not universal. If you can...

  • 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter for 2007 Dutchmen RV Colorado 32QB
The Gen-Y Hitch 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box like the # GY98GR you looked at is a great option for converting your 5th wheel to a gooseneck. However, unless you have a tapered nose you won't be able to make those 90 degree turns. If you still want to go this route the correct pin box is determined by using the formula GVWR x .22 = TW. Since your GVWR is 12,192 lbs that comes out to 2,682 lbs so you need a 4,500 lb tongue weight model. You can choose from the following based on the pin...

  • What Information Do I Need to Find the Right Gen-Y Gooseneck for My 2022 GD Reflection 367BHS?
Hello Nathan, Great question. There are 2 key factors with finding the right Gen-Y Gooseneck, the pin box number, and the pin weight (tongue weight). I was able to look up the GVWR of your 2022 GD Reflection 367BHS which is 14,995 lbs. They have a special formula for getting you into the right Gooseneck, if you take the GVWR and times it by 0.22 you get 3,298.9, if you look at the chart that I attached that puts you into the 4,500 pound executive pin weight capacity. So now that we have...

  • Gen-Y or Lippert Gooseneck Connect for a 2016 Grand Design Reflection318RST
Hey Brett, The pin box on your 2016 Reflection is a 1621 rated at 15.5K according to my contact at Lippert. If we take that and the GVWR of your RV into account this means you need the Gen-Y Pin Box Adapter # GY38FR. I took a look at the Lippert Gooseneck Connect and it's just a basic version adapter while the Gen-Y has the integrated rubber torsion arms so you'll actually see more of a benefit using the Gen-Y and is why I recommend going that route. You just need to pick up a set of...

This is everything you need aside from the actual Gen-Y Hitch 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box. I'm happy to help you pick out the right pin box if you're not sure which one fits. All I need is the information off of your pin box sticker. You can add it in the comments below or reply in an email and attach a picture....

  • Which Gen-Y Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter for Trailer Weight 15,500 lb
Hey James, so the best way to pick out a Gen-Y fifth wheel to gooseneck adapter is to find the adapter that has the pin weight capacity range that best matches the pin weight of the trailer. Or to put it better you would ideally want your pin weight to fall right into the middle of the range so that you get the best ride quality. So for a trailer that weighs 15,500 lbs you'd most likely have a pin weight range of 3,100 lbs so instead of the part # GY66FR you would want the part # GY38FR...

Hi Don! The Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box - Lippert 1621/1621HD - 30K GTW - 4.5K TW # GY38FR is a beefy boy, weighing in at 162 pounds. That's actually not as heavy as some of the 5th wheel to gooseneck king pins, but it is by no means light. What are you wanting to install this on?

Hey Ron, welcome back! I reached out to Lippert and that is a 1621 you have on your 2025 Keystone Cougar 23MLE. Gen-Y has updated their weight ranges so the 4.5k TW model works with a GVWR of 7,275 lbs - 16,360 lbs. This means the Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY38FR is the correct replacement for your 5th wheel. You will also need safety chains # GY49GR to go with it. However, I do think it is better to completely swap out the pin box with one like the Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY38FR. This will also improve your ride quality.
