Video Transcript for Custer E-Z Mount Tow Light Kit Review

Today we're going to review part number EZT20B; this is the E-Z Mount Tow Light Kit. We'll go ahead and quickly cover the components. You get two lights. This is your right side, left side light, twenty foot of wire that comes out to a 4-pole connector, and also an additional 4-pole connector in case you need to wire rescue a 00:23 towing vehicle. How these lights hook up. They have these flaps right here; they're designed to be trapped by the hatch on the vehicle being towed. Your hatch closes in on this and your light stays outside, and it's secured.

The twenty foot of wire gets ran across the top of the vehicle or alongside, whatever personal preference it is, to help secure it as you're going down the road. All right. Let's go ahead and try this out on a typical application. We're going to start off by opening up the back hatch. We're taking our cord.. We're going to run it through the top.

We'll go ahead and run our cord out through the top of the hatch then pull up our slack. Once we have it pulled through we'll go ahead and shut the hatch on it. The door 01:28 feels thick enough where the wire won't hurt anything when you shut the hatch on it. Don't want 01:33 to worry about that. Make sure to slacken our wire 'til our light comes down to the bumper. In a different vehicle this can be in different locations too; so this could be higher up, or maybe you may 01:46 even put these lights up on top up here.

These particular vehicle won't allow us to do it, but we can still do it down at the bottom. Once we put it in place on the bumper the edge of the lid will catch this part right here and hold it in place. Now it's definitely a good idea to get a next set 02:00 of hands to help hold the lights while you shut the hatch on it. Possibly, the cord in-between, you can keep it on the inside. Then we'll 02:18 just slowly close the hatch on our lights and our wires. Okay We all ready 02:30 have our 02:31 lights installed.

We can go ahead and continue on running our cord towards our RV. There's a variety of ways you can run this towards the front. If it had a roof rack you could probably attach this it to the roof rack somehow, loosely; or maybe with some zip ties. What I've also seen done is people just simply open up the door and allow part of it to go inside. Door's sealed. Will still protect the wires as you close it. Then it may be a good idea to run it underneath the hood as well. All right. Then this will get simply ran down to a typical location 03:25 in the front of your vehicle. Then your cord from your RV will come out to your 4-pole. Okay, let's go ahead and try it out. First, we'll go ahead and do our running light circuit. And see 03:40 both of them are working. Okay. Then we'll do our right turn signal. And we'll do our left turn signal. Now a break signal is typically the same thing as a turn signal, except it just stays on in a combined circuit. With that. That'll finish it for our demo of part number EZT20B from Custer, the E-Z Mount Tow Light Kit. .

Perfect for my 2015 Jeep Wrangler as I prefer not to invade the electrical system and the magnetic base would not work with the plastic cover over the steel bumpers. As always shipping was fast. 168209

Joe, how did you hang them off the back of your Jeep? I have a 2015 JKU that we will flat tow. Thx. Dave T.

How did you mount on your jeep?

I open the tailgate to first hang the passenger side light then close the tailgate which serves to lock the passenger light in place and allow enough of an opening to hang the driver side light and quickly close the tailgate. You will be able to move the lights to fine tune their positions. You will also want to route the cable from the door to under the hood to avoid scratches to the hood. The reason for going with this light set was that they were non-invasive no splicing. Since then Hopkins has introduced a tail light wiring kit code HM56200 which also is not invasive where you initially install the kit and you are done when you are ready to go all you do is connect your cable from your motorhome to your Jeep while you use the Jeeps rear lights both tail, brake, and turn signals. Etrailer part number HM56200 for the 2015 JK Wrangler.

Great product and works as advertised. My only complaint is the length of the wire at 20 feet. Luckily I had some extension wire handy so my connections were able to stay intact, especially on sharp turns. I previously purchased a Bulb and Socket Tail Light Wiring Kit, along with a &-Wire to 4-Wire Coiled Electrical Cable. The installation and trouble free operation of the EZT20B Tow Light Kit is far superior. I will order another to have on hand for emergencies. 122878

SMI Stay in Play Duo installation in 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited – Packaging was great with everything needed included plus extra items for various installation methods of you’re choosing. Upon initial investigation and survey, everything except the CD Information pack was accounted for. No big deal, as I had previously watched 2 different Youtube installations found on the internet. In fact, the internet videos were what I used as my step by step installation process, and the written instructions were only used for concerns where the video may not have been as clear as I had hoped for. Understanding that everyone has their own style and methods for doing this project, I purposely was not in a hurry to rush through it. All in all, I took @ 8 hours to install the Adapter 4 to 6 pole #30637, the EZMount Tow lights Kit, and the Stay in Play Duo Braking System. I choose the EZMount because I didn’t want to mess around with the OEM taillights and wiring. Magnetic lights don’t work so well on composite tops and I didn’t want to stick them to the sides of te Jeep, so I modified the EZ mount to wrap around the thickness of the rear glass hatch on both sides. I added a 2”x 4” pc of Velcro on the inside of the glass hatch and the mating surface of the plastic light housing - to hold the lamps in place until the rear gate was closed. I ran the wire harness on the inside under the trim all the way up to the front and through the grommet in the firewall. The flat 4 wire was routed and secured up to the Adapter 4 pole to 6 pole that I had fastened to the Blue Ox base plate. The actual installation of the SMI unit and assorted parts went rather smoothly. Most difficult issue was the lack of working space in front of the driver’s seat area. Installing the screw that holds the G force controller on the front (the side towards the front of the car) was difficult as it was almost a blind installation due to lack of room. The nut and fender washer used through the fire wall for attaching the air cylinder cable bracket was a challenge to reach - tight fit with not much room for one's hand and arm. Other than that, no big surprises – just a lot of tedious steps to do when you want to be sure that it is being installed properly – take your time and don’t be in a hurry. Once everything was installed – it all worked when I checked the system out. The only thing that may seem a bit odd is that when setting the G force initially, the compressor will shut off while adjusting per instructions. To do this initial adjustment, the wife stepped on the brake in the Motorhome, with the switch “On”. The compressor starts, and the brake is pushed down by the Air Cylinder, at which time I slowly adjusted the G force until the compressor shuts off. I secured the adjusting bolt and I told the wife to take her foot off the brake and then re-apply them. The compressor did not start again and the air cylinder did not apply the brakes in the Jeep. After setting the G force per instructions, the unit didn't turn on when the brakes in the Motorhome were applied - but since we were not moving - all I can assume is that the brake system will function while slowing down once the accelerometer setting (the sensitivity setting on the G force box) has been met. I assume that the sensitivity setting method includes a way to ensure the Jeep brakes are not engaged too frequently and only until needed. This is the only step that is a tad bit confusing without an explanation as to what to expect once the G force sensitivity is set. Lastly, I checked the brake away switch and it turned the compressor on and applied the brakes as expected. Overall - the installation went rather smoothly. Can't wait to see how the product works once we hit the road. I'll check back and provide an update later. 446685

Pleasant, professional, efficient folks I enjoyed talking with everyone at etrailer.com. Even with a detailed question about my application when the data on the website varied with the manufacturer's website, they promptly worked with me and the manufacturer to find the accurate truth about the item's fit for my vehicle and agreed to pass along the re-stocking fee the manufacturer promised me if the manufacturer's declaration about the fit with my vehicle was wrong! The manufacturer did not even know if the item should fit. What more could a remote buyer ask for than this kind of detailed, common sense help from a distributor like etrailer? Thanks to Rose and her co-workers for being so kind to help me this way and to have made sure the item was delivered exactly when promised, exactly where promised, by the exact shipper and the exact service level with that shipper as promised. My tow went off "without a hitch" as planned! 3704

2012 Ford Five Hundred

Received product on-time and packed well. I will be using when towing my Fiat 500 behind my motorhome. I use a piece of blue painter's tape to hold in place until back hatch is closed. I also route the wire through the interior of the car, out the front of the front door, then under the hood. Total amount of exposed wire is 12 inches. I will probably use these lights until I have a more permanent light installation. All in all, these lights will do the job nicely until then. I also attached vinyl bumpers to protect the car's paint from any scratches or rubbing. 346557

Lights are still working fine. I pinched a wire in the tow bar, took longer to set up the soldering iron than to repair. The part I liked is I didnt have to modify my car in any way to use. Very happy with product.

These work fine and fit nicely under the trunk lid. However, they are wired incorrectly. The picture shows the light on the left having the wires come out of the right and the light on the right with the wires coming out of the left. If you install them this way, they are reversed! I have checked extremely carefully and my outlets are wired correctly. If you look at the picture, you can see that the wiring coloring is incorrect (the standard is yellow is left, green is right). It is no big deal to cut and fix the wires, but the buyer should know. 569121

2014 Jeep Commander

Finally got around to installing Demco base plate kit on my 2014 Chevy Spark. Took me a couple of hours to install. I'm sure a younger person could have installed it quicker, but I am bumping 80 and take my time. The instructions were very clear and thorough and parts call out was detailed very nicely. I liked the Demco base plate attach points being low and not blocking air flow to eng. and also, with the covers on the attach points they look like part of the grill. I bought the Demco Commander tow bar and E-Z Mount Tow Light Kit to go with it. I did not want to connect into my Spark electrical system, so the light kit made it a simple installation. The tow bar is a breeze to hook up to the car and RV. It tows like there is nothing behind the RV. I am towing with a Thor Vegas 24.1 I would recommend watching the helpful videos that are available which will make things go smoothly. Another bonus to this tow rig was the price from etrailer which was less than half of what some of my RV buddies paid for a tow setup. Great product, fast delivery and super good prices. I highly recommend it. Wish I had taken some pics, but did not think of it at the time. Besides the tow hookup looks more or less like most.........except better. 635685

2008 Smart fortwo

I was looking for a set of tow lights for my 2008 smart fortwo. Problem is there is very little metal anywhere on the body so I could not use magnets and I did not want to mount a permanent diode light system. So at the recommendation of the sales associate, I opted for these light. The mounts for the lights perfect to fit under the hatch glass and it is really easy to run the wiring thru the car out the front door to the connector on the hitch. The actual lights are okay. They are not very bright but are visible to following traffic. 509965

2012 Jeep Wrangler

We had a difficult time trying to find tail lighting to use while hauling our jeep behind our RV without tapping in to the electrical system of the jeep. Most trailer lights are magnetic and they obviously don't attach to a plastic hard top jeep. These lights tuck into the top of the window on the back of our Jeep Wrangler. Simple and easy to install. Worth every penny! 498336

Frankly, I was a bit disappointed in this product. It’s cheaply made and doesn’t look like it will hold up very long because the plastic flanges are thin and don’t look very durable, over time. Not up to the standard I am used to from etrailer. I am not impressed. Sorry guys. 484433

Delivery was fast and the product was as expected. The only problem I had was that when I tested the lights, the left light didn't light up when I turned my car's headlights on. I took the cover off and removed the bulb (push down on the bulb and twist it to remove). The filaments weren't broken, so I put the bulb back in and tried it again. It worked fine, so I assume the bulb hadn't been twisted in all the way and wasn't making a good contact. I plan to mount the lights to a board and use a rope to attach the board over my bikes when I have the bike cover on, since the bike cover blocks my car's taillights. 462557

The EZ Tow Lights are the perfect solution to not using the magnetic style lights on top of the 'towed' vehicle. These lights being positioned just over the rear bumper, coming out from the trunk/hatch, provides excellent visibility to approaching drivers! I use a tow dolly, so by adding a 4-pin slitter running out of our motorhome receiver hitch (7 to 4), I can run the tow dolly lights and these light too! Thank you etrailer! Glenn L 402111

Worked great on my wooden trailer. I had lost my regular tail lights on my trailer due to damaged wiring, so I ordered these and just stuck them onto the back wooden gate of the trailer and plugged them into the wire end in out van and they worked fine. Saved me from having to have someone rewire my old wooden trailer. And I can take them off and use them on other trailers and vehicles if the need arises. Great price as also. 250039

Either way the base plates are compatible. In addition to the tow bar and base plates you will also need a lighting solution and supplemental braking. The tow bar comes with safety cables and I see them in your picture so you won't need to add any additional cables. For lighting...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2018 Mini Cooper S Convertible Behind an RV
  • To flat tow your 2018 Mini Cooper Convertible S model you will first need base plates # RM-521882-4. Next you will need a compatible tow bar. I strongly recommend a non-binding tow bar because with it you will not have to have the vehicle and motorhome perfectly straight and level to hook up or disconnect. If you ever had to fight with a tow bar because it bound up then you know how much of a pain, literally and figuratively, it can be. That is why I recommend the Falcon All-Terrain tow...

  • The Curt Tow Bar with Adjustable-Width Arms # C19745 is a universal tow bar system and the instructions basically say to make sure to attach the clevis mounts to the frame of the vehicle. You can mount it to the bumper or you can remove the bumper to avoid drilling holes into the bumper as well. I have attached a link to the instructions for you to reference and a helpful article on making sure your tow bar is at the correct operating height. For a complete flat towing setup you will...

  • Yes, the Blue Ox Alpha tow bar # BX7365 is compatible with the Blue Ox Bolt-On Base Plate Bracket Kit # BX88230. You will just need to make sure that the base plates are spaced 16 inches to 36 inches apart on center. Anywhere within that range will work with the Alpha. In addition to the base plates and tow bar (the tow bar comes with safety cables) you will also need a lighting solution and supplemental braking. If you have enough metal at the back of your CJ-7 then you could use a...

  • Can Magnetic Flat Tow Lights Install on 2017 Jeep Wrangler
  • For vehicles like yours that don't have an easily accessible steel portion of the vehicle for magnets to attach to we recommend the tailgate style light kit like the part # EZT20B which closes in the rear door and gives you a setup similar to the magnetic kits except without requiring a steel surface. Check out the picture I attached to see how it installs. I also attached an install video for this kit for you to check out as well.

  • Necessary Equipment to Flat tow a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • If you plan on flat towing your 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited there are a number of parts that you will need. There is only one real plug and play option when it comes to wiring, which is Magnetic Towing Light Kit # # C-ATL20A. If your Jeep has a soft top and you cannot use magnetic lights, you could use the E-Z Mount Tow Light Kit # EZT20B. You are also going to need base plate kits, and I recommend the Roadmaster EZ4 # RM-521448-4. For a tow bar, a great option would be the Roadmaster...

  • Can a 2013 Honda Fit be Flat Towed Behind a Motorhome
  • I have a copy of the 2013 Honda Fit Owners Manual that I found online, and it states that both manual and automatic transmission equipped Fit models can indeed be towed behind a motorhome IF the specific procedures shown are followed. You can find this information by checking your manual. Be sure to read the instructions carefully and completely, as they're pretty specific and if they aren't followed to the letter, you can damage the drivetrain of your Fit. • Flat Towing Lights Recommendation for 2016 Jeep Wrangler Since Magnetic Can't be Used
  • The removable lighting solution to use on a 2016 Wrangler is the part # EZT20B as this will install between the tailgate. The magnetic lights aren't a fit for your vehicle realistically since there isn't a place to attach them. A customer of ours used this kit on his 2015 Wrangler and here is how he said he was able to install the kit. I open the tailgate to first hang the passenger side light then close the tailgate which serves to lock the passenger light in place and allow enough...

But there are numerous lighting options for flat towing a vehicle that will work for you. The right wiring application for you will depend on several factors. • For a Jeep Wrangler like yours there really isn't a good place to attach magnetic tow lights like the part # C-ATL20A. • Is Brake Light Relay Required with Blue Ox Patriot System on a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • On the 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited the brake light relay # RM-88400 is required to prevent the towed vehicle's brake signal from overriding the turn signal from the RV when applying the brakes during a turn. But if you were to use a light kit such as # EZT20B or # C-ATL20A then it is not required. With any other light kit you would need to use it.

  • If you have a strong magnetic surface on the side of your 2016 Jeep Wrangler you could very well mount the Tow Ready Magnetic Tow Lights # 73864 there. The magnets are very strong for the lights, but we haven't tested them on the side of a vehicle so there isn't a way I can guarantee that it will hold well.
