Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 1998 C/K Series Pickup - Curt

Today, on our 1998 Chevy CK Series pickup, we'll be installing the Curt two inch receiver hitch, part number C14081. Now, here's what our hitch will look like once installed. Next, we'll give you a couple measurements to assist you selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is two and a half inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 22 and a quarter inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. We'll now go ahead with the installation. Now, to begin our install, we'll go ahead and note that if you have a spare tire, it's best to go ahead and remove it for ease and installation of the install.

Next, we'll point out our attachment points. We're going to have a total of six attachment points, three in each side. The forward attachment point will be a large round hole that's been pre-drilled into the frame. Our center attachment point, or middle, will be a smaller pre-drilled hole in the frame, and the rear attachment point has a pre-drilled hole in the frame and a weld nut on the top of the frame. In some applications, there will be a bolt in this attachment point and it will need to be removed. Keep in mind that each process we do here on the driver's side will get repeated identically on the passenger side. Before I attempt to install the new hardware, for the weld nut, because over time, the threads will come built up with rust, dust, dirt, and debris, we're going to want to clean them up before we attempt to install the new hardware.

To do that, we'll use a spray lubricant and a half inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092. Then, once we have it thoroughly cleaned out, I recommend to take one of the new fasteners, thread it into the weld nut to make sure it's going to go nice and easily. Now, the hardware for our hitch, for our forward and center attachment points is going to be a half inch carriage bolt and a half inch spacer block. The carriage bolt and block will go down through the frame, through the hitch, and get secured with a half inch flange nut. We'll go ahead and put that hardware in place now. Now, for the rear attachment point, working with the weld nut, we're going to use a new 12 millimeter bolt and half inch inaudible 00:02:29 tooth washer. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch as it goes through the hitch and into the weld nut. Now, with all our hardware in place, we're ready to put our hitch in position.

It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the fastener. We'll install each fastener finger tight until we have them all in place. Now, with all our fasteners installed, we'll go ahead and tighten them down. Now, with all our fasteners tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Once we have the fasteners tightened down and torqued to specification, we're ready to hit the road. That does it for our install of our hitch, part number C14081 on our 1998 Chevy CK Series pickup. .

Incredible value for the money. Many other hitch brands are twice as expensive. Installation was about an hour once I spent 3 hours cutting the old rusty hitch off. Everything went perfect. Great product. 28290

I ordered a trailer hitch for a 1994 Chevrolet Silverado. The hitch arrived four days after placing the order. I was skeptical of the reviews that stated that less than an hour was needed to install the hitch. However I found those estimates to be true. The installation instructions were clear. All necessary hardware was provided. Great service and product. 112615

I installed the hitch on a 1994 Chevrolet pickup that I use for farm work. The hitch was easy to install and I have experienced no problems with it when pulling a 16 cattle trailer. I would recommend it to anyone considering the purchase of a trailer hitch.

Order the hitch and received very fast. Took less then 1 hour to put on in driveway with no special tools. Very happy with this. 347529

I installed this hitch all by myself and I am 67 years old. I used a couple of ropes to help me (picture). I had to do some simple fitting like. Chamfering the sides of one of the lips (picture) to fit flush between 2 rivets.. I had to drill and tap a new hole for the ground wire. I also installed a new wire harness for the trailer lights. I had to drill and tap a new hole for the ground wire for that also. These are very simple tasks and I took my time to make sure everything was just right. I also had to make 2 trips to the hardware store for an 18mm socket. (Seems all socket sets jump from 17 to 19mm). Then I had to go back for a 6in. extension for my torque wrench. I actually enjoyed the project. Total time=several leisure hours. 234366

Chevrolet

This installation was on a '90 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 with regular cab, and the short 6 1/2 ft bed. The pickup came with the z71 package and 265/75R16 tires from the factory. The first thing I did was drop the spare out of the way. The ground wire is in the way for any hitch install on my pickup so I removed the wire, extended it three inches and reinstalled it to the frame using an unused hole in the frame. It is a good idea to clean off the rust with some sandpaper before attaching the ground wire. The next thing I noticed was the hitch has a hole to clear a bolt on the passenger side, but the hole just barely clears the bolt and actually ends up resting on the flange of the bolt. There is no room to move the hitch over to miss the flange without it riding on a rivet on the driver's side. I did not like the hitch riding off the frame like that so I removed this bolt and ground one side of the flange off (see pics). Now the hitch sits flat on the frame. The next issue was the spare tire. I took a picture of the spare before mounting the hitch. After bolting the hitch in place I took a picture of it again. I did not like the tight fit of the 265 spare with this hitch. As you can see in the pictures the rubber brake line is rubbing on the tire. As the suspension moves, the spare and the brake line will rub. You could wrap the brake line in a rubber hose if you really wanted to keep a 265R16 spare under the bed, and that might protect the brake hose from damage, but I chose to replace the spare with a smaller tire. I went with a 225/75R16 for it's narrower width and smaller diameter. I also took a picture of this spare and now there is sufficient space around the brake line I feel. I could have even went with a slightly taller tire it looks like. I have heard of some people bending the brake line out of the way, but it wasn't the way I wanted to go. At first I was considering getting a hitch like the Draw-Tite 41525 for its spare tire clearance, but then I noticed a few exposed square tube hitches on the road and decided personally it wasn't the look I wanted on my pickup. So I started looking at concealed square tube hitches like this one and Draw-Tite's 41524. There are some good pictures of a 41524 install here on etrailer. If you look at those pictures, the square tubing rests as close as it can to the bumper, whereas on this Curt there is a gap of 1 to 1 1/4 inches between the bumper and the hitch (see my pics). I don't know if the difference is from different pickups or the hitches are different. I suspicion the 41524 is made to fit closer to the bumper giving you that extra inch or so of extra room for your spare. If you really wanted to stuff a tire as big as the 265 in front of your concealed square tube it looks to me like the 41524 may give you a slight advantage. Perhaps it would not be enough to avoid the brake line though. I'm not sure whether I would have needed to go down to a smaller tire with the 41524 hitch or not, but I wouldn't doubt that I still would have put a smaller tire on even with the slight advantage the 41524 gives. If I couldn't accept any spare tire conflicts with a hitch there were two hitches I was considering that may not interfere. These hitches do show the tubes below the bumper (I think) but they are round tubes which I personally think look better than the square tubes when exposed. The Reese multi-fit 37069 (5,000 lb rating) and 37034 (7,000 lb rating) are the two round tubes I was considering. With the 37034 the weld nuts must be removed for bigger 5/8 inch bolts, while the smaller version bolts right into the factory weld nuts. I would like to see a picture of these hitches installed but could not find any. Being multi-fit they are not specifically made for your Chevy, but fit Fords etc. The 37034 is a bit heavier than this Curt at 63 lbs vs 47. They do not appear to be available here at etrailer. If you wanted to try one you could probably call etrailer and have them order one for you. I know I did this with a tow hook they did not offer and etrailer was really good at finding this hook for me. I was deciding between these four hitches for my pickup. I wouldn't doubt that all four would have been good choices. I do like the Curt I got. It is the lightest weight of the four and has the highest weight rating. It looks good and is concealed very well up under the bumper. I only had to make one concession and that was in the spare tire department. I do think this Curt compromises spare tire space more than the other three mentioned but I found a way around that which works for me. I do not know if all Chevies are going to have the same dimensions as mine. Mine is different than most being a regular cab and going back a ways in years. The tools I used were: 13 mm socket (to remove the ground wire) 15 mm socket and wrench (to remove the bolt I shaved down) 18 mm socket (to remove the factory bolts out of the weld nuts) 19 mm socket (to install the new Curt bolts) I actually bought a deep 19 just for this job as the Curt bolts are long and I felt I could get on them better with a deep socket. 29102

The hitch arrived on time. The installation instructions were easy to follow and it fit like it was made for my truck. Installation took 90 minutes but it was done during an extreme heat wave as it was 100 degrees that day. But I’m pleased with the results. It claimed no drilling and they didn’t disappoint as it went together perfectly. 673383

I was happy with everything until I realized how badly bent the hitch was. It wasn’t obvious at first, but once I attempted to bolt it on you could see that one of the arms of the hitch had been bent inward several inches. I was able to straighten it out, but it wasn’t easy. Otherwise, I think etrailer is great. 595484

Great product. Mounted right on my 96 gmc with no problems. Had to move a ground wire from the frame in order for the hitch to fit. Will definitely buy from you again. Thanks 422421

The unit came with all required parts and pieces. Installation was straight forward and all the bolt holes lined up. I was happy to do the work myself to install it, and though it took a few hours, that was mainly due to cleaning the rails of dirt and single handedly doing the work. I recommend having a buddy there to help, just to make it easier. Great hitch setup for my boat trailer! 400877

  • Does Spare Tire Have To Be Relocated When Installing Hitch On 1998 Chevrolet C/K Pickup
  • I checked out the installation instructions for both of the trailer hitches you referenced for your 1998 Chevrolet CK pickup truck. Both of the hitch instructions do mention the spare tire. For the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 41938 the instructions say that you need to remove the spare tire and carrier from the vehicle. If the under-box tire storage is to be retained, the spare tire carrier will have to be relocated and/or modified after receiver is installed. For the Curt Trailer...

  • Is a Class IV Trailer Hitch Rated High Enough for a 20 Foot Trailer and 1997 GMC C/K Pickup Truck
  • A Class IV hitch such as # C14081 might actually have a higher capacity than your 1997 GMC C/K series truck (check the owner's manual) so provided that the trailers you will be towing now and in the future are within the capacities of the truck and hitch, whichever is rated lower, then you will be good to go. Curt trailer hitch # C14081 is rated for 10,000 pound gross trailer weight and 1,000 pounds tongue weight. When used with weight distribution it is rated for 12,000 gross trailer...

  • Trailer Hitch Rated for at Least 8,000 Pounds for a 2000 Chevy Silverado or C/K Series 1500
  • For the 2000 model year Chevy trucks there was both an actual Silverado model and C/K series models with a Silverado trim option. For an actual Silverado model, 1500, I recommend Curt hitch # C14332 rated for 1,000 pounds tongue weight and 10,000 pounds gross trailer weight when NOT using weight distribution. When using weight distribution it is rated for 1,200 pounds tongue weight and 12,000 pounds gross trailer weight. If your truck is a C/K series 1500 then I recommend Curt hitch...

  • Recommended 7-Way Trailer Wiring Harness for 1995 Chevy C3500 with 5.7L
  • For your 1995 Chevy C3500, I recommend your start with the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller # 90195. This proportional controller will apply your trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity as you hit the brake pedal in your truck. It has easy to use presets and has an LCD screen to avoid code deciphering of most other brake controllers. It is completely transferable to another vehicle if you decide to move trucks at some point. If you want a more basic controller,...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 1998 GMC C/K Series Truck with 37 inch Frame
  • The hitches that are listed for the 1998 GMC trucks with 34 inch frames are the ones that are designed to fit the cab and chassis models. The # C14081 that you referenced would work well on your truck with a 37 inch frame since it is not a cab and chassis model and is a standard truck. Check out the install video I attached to the right for more info.

  • What is the Hitch Pin Hole Size for Curt Class IV Trailer Hitch # C14081
  • Curt Class IV trailer hitch # C14081 takes a 5/8 inch diameter pin the same as a Class III hitch. The outer width of the receiver is the same as well so the pin or lock does not have to be any longer. You can use your existing ball mounts that you were previously using with a Class III hitch. No worries!

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 1997 GMC C/K 2500 Series Pickup Truck with Step Bumper
  • Yes the 34 inch frame indicates (usually) a cab and chassis model truck. For a regular pickup version of your 1997 GMC C/K 2500 I have included a link to the hitches that will fit. The most popular option is # C14081. It is rated for 1,000 pounds tongue weight and 10,000 pounds gross trailer weight. When using weight distribution it is rated for 1,200 pounds tongue weight and 12,000 pounds gross trailer weight. I have linked a video showing how it installs. It sounds like you have everything...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 1991 GMC Sierra Stepside
  • For your 1991 GMC Sierra Stepside, I recommend taking a look at the Curt Class IV Receiver Hitch # C14081. This hitch is confirmed to fit your truck and will use existing holes in its frame for a no-drill installation. Just note that the spare tire will need to be lowered or removed temporarily when mounting the trailer hitch. This particular hitch features a 2 inch receiver opening and a towing weight capacity of 10,000 pounds. I highly recommend checking the owner's manual for your truck...

  • Curt Hitch Recommendation for 1988 Chevy C1500 Extended Cab
  • The reason the part # 13028 didn't fit your 1988 Chevy C1500 is because it only fits crew cab model trucks and yours is an extended cab. The # C14081 is going to fit your truck as it is designed to fit the extended cab models like yours. I attached an install video for the hitch as well.

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch C14081 Fit a 1997 GMC K2500 with 37 Inch Frame Spacing
  • Your 1997 GMC K2500 has the pickup frame spacing so Curt trailer hitch # C14081 will fit. The cab and chassis models (the ones that put service beds on) are more narrow and would not accept this hitch. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation for you. The recommended ball mount for this hitch is # C45341. If the ball mount does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball...

  • Trailer Hitch for 1998 Chevy C/K 1500 to Tow a 7,000 Pound Trailer
  • Yes, Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 37130 will have the capacity for a trailer weighing 7,000 pounds. This hitch maxes out at 7,000 pounds without weight distribution so you might consider a higher capacity hitch. Curt trailer hitch # C14081 is a great option. It is only a few dollars more than the Class III hitch and it has a 10,000 pound gross trailer weight capacity. Be sure to consult the truck owners manual to make sure it too can tow the 7,000 pound trailer. Installation is fairly...

With the 5.0 liter motor capacity is 6,500 pounds. With the 5.7 liter it is 7,000 pounds. And with the 6.2 liter is goes down to 5,500 pounds. You can also check for a sticker in the driver's side door jamb. It should list the gross vehicle weight rating and the gross combined vehicle weight rating....

  • Trailer Hitch for a Lifted 1997 Chevy C/K Series 1500 Truck
  • Cab and chassis models are what they use to make service vehicles like flat beds and utility trucks. They have frame rails that are more narrow. If your truck can with a bed on it then it is most likely not a cab and chassis. Since the truck is lifted, adding a roll pan does not necessarily mean that you have to get the roll pan bumper hitch. I will depend on how the roll pan mounts and how far it comes down. You will want to look at the instructions for the roll pan hitches, like...

  • Hitch and Weight Distribution Recommendation for 1996 GMC 4X4 Pickup
  • The Curt Class V Receiver Hitch, part # C15325 would be a great choice for your truck. The hitch is rated at 16,000 lbs, 17,000 lbs when using a weight distribution system. You will need to ensure that the towing capacity of the vehicle exceeds the fully-loaded weight of the trailer. In order for a weight distribution system to work at peak performance, it needs to be matched as closely as possible to the tongue weight of the trailer as it is typically towed. When you quote 10,000 pounds...
