Powder coated steel is sturdy and corrosion resistant.This hitch was installed on a 2021 Toyota Rav4. It is solidly constructed. Installation was simple and the etrailer videos were very helpful in the installation process. We did need two people as the hitch is heavy and cumbersome but the install was done without jacking up the car. The passenger side was a very tight working space so we inserted the bolts and mounted the hitch on drivers side first. Then we placed the car jack under the hitch to lift into place for bolting the passenger side. The jack was needed for a bit more lifting power than we could muster by hand to line up the bolt holes. The hitch fit perfectly onto the car. The entire process took about an hour.
Paul D - 08/17/2022It is well built with good welds. Paint had some chips. It doesn't appear to have had any primer coat. I assume they are using a no prime paint but they never work well. You have to jack the Rav4 up to get the hitch in. The side arms were bent in which made it very hard push them onto the mounting points. One person would have a very hard time to align it because of this. And the excessively tight fit caused a lot of scratches on the car mounting plates which will rust up in no time. And like others ordering from etrailer have stated, packaging leaves much to be desired. Instead of 100 staples fail to keep the box from splitting open in shipping, a couple nylon bands would seem cheaper and provide much needed support to prevent the box from splitting and letting the hitch stick out to be damaged in shipping.
Perfect fit, was easy to install, all parts included, fast shipping. There was a part of it poked out of the box, but that’s happened to me about 4 other times on previous orders from multiple companies for several past cars - it is what it is so no biggie due to the awkwardness of the part. The main part seen at rear didn’t get scratched and that’s all that really matters. Had a lot of tape protecting. Love it!!!
Outside of some slight scuffs from ups everything went well. It was a pain to install the bolts on the passenger size because of Toyotas design, but not a fault of the hitch. Overall with the lift and a transmission jack it took me ~15 minutes. Recommend definitely
It seems like the boxes for etrailer are just decorations. This is the second hitch I have ordered from etrailer and both arrived with boxes torn up and the hitches sticking out. For this one, I had to add some touch up paint because it was scraped down to the bare metal. Fortunately, the hitch is solid, so nothing was bent. Installing the hitch took a couple of hours (with help from my son). We watched several videos from etrailer and one did not lower the exhaust, so we went with that approach. Getting the hitch into place to align with the holes in the chassis is tricky. We started with the box the hitch came in but later switched to a jack (see photo), which was much better because it allowed micro changes in height. Threading the bolts takes patience, a lot of patience. The instructions call for 86 ft-lbs of torque, which is a lot. We cranked the bolts as much as we could and never triggered the torque wrench. As everyone has said, working on the passenger side is awkward/frustrating. I bought a 19mm crow's foot for the torque wrench because of the narrow opening. Based on our experience, I think it is worthwhile to lower the exhaust to give you more working room. Once on, the hitch looks good, although it sits lower than the Curt hitch we put on our Subaru Outback.
Every hitch I've bought over the years has come from e-trailer. Best prices and only 2 day shipping to my home. Only reason for not 5 star is packaging needs improvement. A 100 pound hitch will puncture through a box. Areas likely to do so need wrapped to prevent dings and scratches. I will just touch up after install and smile!
My trailer hitch works perfect and I was amazed at how easy it was to install. The service provided by etrailer is top notch and sets the bar extremely high for any other company who offers a service or a product. The videos on installing the product were very useful. I had to use a floor Jack to support the hitch for me, I was not strong enough to support it while putting the screws in. Again the service was the best.
Hitch is good, Watched etrailer install video and had no issues installing with 2 people. The bottom of the hitch is 9 inches from the ground. The packaging could be better. The mounting points were hanging out of the box upon delivery. Could use some foam around those brackets to keep from being a knife edge to the box. I used some Rustoleum paint to cover the scrapes and help prevent future rust. It’s a hitch, hard to hurt one of these.

This trailer hitch impressed me. Unfortunately, we had an issue with [mechanic shop] and they did not connect the hitch on correctly which came disconnected. The emergency chains were hooked in and try to pull away the trailer, even slam back into the hitch, and there was very little damage to the actual hitch itself very impressed with the quality of this product.
Have used the hitch a number of times. It has performed beautifully with no problems at all. Would highly recommend this version. My son and I installed it and did the wiring, which was really quite straightforward and simple. If I need anything, I will be back as etrailer staff was very easy to deal with. Thank you!
Me - 11/01/2022Good price. Instructions could be more detailed but the video tells you everything you need to know. The exhaust needs to be lowered to lift the hitch over it. Easier done with two people. The box came pretty mangled but no damage to the hitch. I was able to install without raising the car at all. This was on a 21 rav 4 hybrid

Excellent hitch overall. Installing it is best done with a hoist and a way to incrementally raise each end to get the holes to line up. With the Curt hitch I needed to adjust it with a scissor jack to within 1 millimeter to get the holes in the hitch to line up with the holes in the frame. A larger slot would have helped enormously.
You will want to have a 3/4" torque drive adapter or "dog bone" wrench. It is the only way to get use a torque wrench on the bolts.
I used a floor jack and the scissor jack and a 19mm ratchet box wrench and a gasket scraper and the 3/4" dog bone and a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to XX lbs of towque and blocks of wood.
I raised the rear wheels 6 inches off the ground with two car ramps. Without these it woud have been impossible for me to get my hand in on the passenger side of the hitch to thread in the bolts.
Seems to be a solid hitch. It is definitely a tight install on the passenger side of a Toyota RAV4. Would be better if the bolts were a half-inch shorter for the passenger side so the installer is able to push on the head of the bolt while trying to get it started in the threaded hole. For anyone installing on a RAV4 (or probably any vehicle): Be sure to test the bolts in each hole before you start the install. Sometimes the threaded openings have a little overspray of the coating, and it's difficult to get the bolt started. We had that problem with one of the four holes. After messing around 2+ hours trying to get that last bolt installed, we took the other 3 bolts out, pulled down the hitch, and tried to screw the bolt into that hole. It wouldn't get started until I used a wrench to slowly turn it as I held the bolt in place. Once I got the bolt in, then out, we raised the hitch and installed it for the 2nd time. This time we were able to get that last bolt threaded into the hole. Shouldn't normally take you more than 30 minutes to install this hitch.
Overall a great experience. Hitch fit perfectly. Video was instructive preparing me what turned out to be a smooth task. As mentioned in the video there are 2 tricky bolts on the Rav4 hybrids. Shipping box arrived torn up but no damage to the hitch.

Assembly was fairly easy and its held up so far. Only 4 stars for the paint job. Just like all these receivers, they start rusting the minute you install them and the paint starts chipping and flaking off. 3 years later you're repainting them and spraying them with fluid film.
This hitch is the bomb!! It's my second trailer hitch from etrailer. It is heavy-duty, perfectly built, and nicely coated. It installed easily and fit perfectly! I love it!
Installation was fairly easy with some ramps and a floor Jack to hold in place.
Clearance is equal to lowest point on vehicle.
Great product and super easy to install.

This is a pretty good hitch. Had to go around to multiple hardware stores to find screws which would actually fit (lengthwise), under my late model RAV4. But, did find them. The only thing I wish etrailer would do, is to ALWAYS indicate the country of manufacture. Only learned that this was a made in China model when it arrived. There are some of us who due to the awful things the Chinese have been doing, do not willingly buy products manufactured there.
This premade hitch was a perfect fit and I was able to install it in less than an hour by myself using preexisting holes in the frame of my 2020 Toyota RAV4. I used a pile of bricks to temporarily hold the hitch in place to start the screws but could just as easily used a small floor jack.
My usage is a little off the reservation: as a mount for a large mobile ham radio antenna. I had found the metal in the vehicle body was too thin to support highway wind loads resulting in stress cracking. Using an MFJ receiver hitch antenna mount solved this problem and it is very easy to remove the antenna when the vehicle goes to the shop for maintenance.
I didn't have any help so it took 4 times longer to accomplish the install. It was a rainy Saturday afternoon so it didn't matter. I drove the rear wheels up on solid 3" paving blocks to give a little elbow room. One side of the hitch was placed on 1x4 wood scraps. The car jack was used on the other end to raise into position. One hand placing the bolt in the hole and the other slowly turning the jack screw. It fit perfectly! The crossmember is higher than the muffler so there is no added wind drag on the hybrid Rav4. The only time you have to reach under the car is to lower the exhaust pipe.
