Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon - Curt

Today on our 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon, we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Curt Custom-Fit Class II Trailer Hitch Receiver, offering a 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 inch opening. It's part number is C12136. This is what our hitch is going to look like installed. It's a really nice clean look, I think. We've got the round tube that's going to come over here. It meets in the middle with our receiver tube opening.

This is 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 inch nice, flush-looking reinforcement collar around the end of it. I like the way Curt does that. These are our safety chain connection points here. An oval shaped hole. You shouldn't have any problem getting safety chains connected with whatever type you may want to use. You'll see our 1/2-inch diameter pin hole here.

It's going to be great for uses with this pinning clip, which is provided with the hitch or if you want to do a locking hitch pin or even an anti-rattle device, it looks like we're going to have plenty of room there. This is Class II hitch so you're going to have lots of options as far as accessories that will fit it, 4-bike racks, cargo carriers, ball mounts so you can haul a small trailer. All of that is really good uses for it.

With that being said, Curt will recommend the use of a stabilization strap when we're hauling non-wheel loads, so cargo carriers, bike racks, things that like. A couple of measurements that will be helpful when it comes to selecting ball mounts, bike racks or cargo carriers will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening. We've got about 15-3/4 inch. Then from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's about 1-3/4 inch. The first thing we need to do is get our exhaust lowered down and out of the way. This is a single outlet exhaust, so we're just going to have three hangers. We've got one that's located right here at the rear corner and to the inside of the car. Right catty-cornered, there's going to be one right up here. Then if we'll follow the pipe forward a little bit, there's one right in front of this rear differential. Now before we start pulling those, what I like to do is just put a strap underneath the exhaust here. That's going to offer us some support so as we remove those hangers, this will support it and then we can gently lower it down as much as we want. The next thing we're going to do is start pulling those hangers down. I like to use some spray lubricant on them. This is just going to help them slide off a little bit easier. Then a large screwdriver or pry bar is really what you're going to need. We'll just kind of slide those off. We'll do that for our other two locations. If you have a dual exhaust, you're just going to repeat this same process, but it will be over on the passenger side. We'll leave a little slack there and then we can kind of move that exhaust over a little bit. It's going to give us the room we need to work. Now we've got 4 bolts. We've got 1, 2, 3 and 4 that we're going to need to remove. All right. Now we can set these aside for re-installation later. Now we're going to pull the plugs out of the bottom of the frame rail. That's going to expose one of the holes here that we're going to enlarge and then the one here in the rear is going to be one of our attachment points once we get our bolt fish wired down through it. The first thing we need to do is enlarge this hole located here in the front. That's what we're going to use to slide all of our hardware in. We're going to create that to be out access hole. Now you can use a grinder and kind of round it out on each side. What I like to use is a step bit. This is going to allow us to just slowly enlarge the hole as we go. It will keep it kind of more uniform looking. Once we've got these enlarged so our bolt passes freely in and out there, that's what we're looking for. I like to use a little rustproof spray paint here and just coat that and let it dry. That way, we're not going t have to worry about any corrosion or anything like that on that bare steel. Now we're ready to get our hardware installed so we'll take our bolt leader or our fish wire or whatever you want to call it and we're going to go in the rearmost attachment point and direct it back to where we can get it through the hole that we enlarged. Now onto that, we're going to slide one of our spacer blocks. We'll thread on one of the 1/2-inch carriage bolts. I like to feed them in separately. That's usually the best tactic. Then we'll bring them right back to that rear location. We'll go do the exact same thing for our passenger side. Now with the help of an extra set of hands, we're going to guide our hitch up into position. We'll go right over the bolts we just put in. Then we'll take our flange nuts. We're going to thread them right up on the carriage bolts. Now we'll snug down our hardware just a little bit here. Now using our hitch as a template, we want to drill out a hole that's 17/32nds in diameter. I've also used a 1/2-inch bit and then just kind of enlarged it slightly. We want a 1/2-inch bolt to come through. That extra 32nd just gives us a little cushion room. We can head over to the passenger side and just repeat that same process. Now with our holes drilled out, we'll use our bolt leaders again. We'll run those up through and out the same access hole. Then we'll slide on another spacer block, thread on our carriage bolt and bring them down through. Now we can place a flange nut on our forward mounting location there and then go do the same thing for our passenger side. We'll snug those down as well. It's time to grab our torque wrench and check our instructions for the proper specifications and get all of our hardware torqued down appropriately. Now we're going to get our heat shield trimmed here. Basically, we just want to come up this ridge just past that . I'll call it the second little channel that runs through and then right up to the side. This is a pretty thin piece of metal so you can use just tinsnips or whatever you've got there to cut it like that. Then we'll replace the 3 bolts to get it put back into position. We just removed one of the mounting locations there. Now it's time to get our exhaust put back into position. A little more spray lubricant here is going to help that out. We can just raise it up and slide our hangers on. We'll pull down our safety strap here and our hitch will be ready for use. That will complete our installation of our Curt Custom-Fit Class II Trailer Hitch Receiver, Part No. C12136, on our 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

I have never written a review for anything I have purchased online before but felt compelled to do so after buying and installing a Curt class II trailer hitch and wiring harness on my brand new 2017 Subaru Outback. I decided to give it a shot myself after watching the absolutely amazing do it yourself videos on Etrailer’s web site. They were absolutely spot on and very easy to follow. When I opened the box containing the hitch, I was more than impressed with the quality of the hitch. Pictures do not do it justice when viewing this on the Internet. This hitch is extremely well-built and very hearty. After watching the video on how to install each item, I tackled the project and completed it with absolutely no hiccups. Super easy to do yourself if you have any mechanical skills. The connector for the wiring harness was located exactly as shown in the video. The whole package arrived on my doorstep in two days! Super impressed with the quality of the product, speed of delivery, and ease of installation. One thing I would recommend strongly is going through from the top to install the hardware. You’re going to have to cut a hole in something to fish everything into the frame where the hitch will be mounted. I just prefer to put a hole in the sheet-metal above rather than drill a large hole in the structure under the vehicle. Just cover it up with a few layers of duct tape and you’re good to go. I also decided to just unbolt both of my mufflers and remove them instead of just letting everything hang down. It made everything much easier to access and helped make quick work of the total installation. Don’t spend hundreds of dollars to have someone put this thing on for you. The dealership was going to charge me nearly $600 to install a Subaru hitch of much lesser quality. I did the whole dxxx thing myself for well under $XXX!!! Git-er done!!! I will be using the hitch for a bike rack and to pull a small ATV trailer with a CanAm Outlander 1000 two-up ATV. Sorry- I forgot to take some pics... 322301

Product arrived within time specified. Everything fit like a glove. Next time I order, I'll get the wire harness too, and beat the shipping. To the manufacturer, I suggest wrapping the included hitch in bubble wrapped, and nylon tape or zip strip it to the receiver or better still insert it in the receiver and pin. Mines arrived and had a chance to bang around alot in delivery. The internal box baffle had been pulled loose from its stapled position. Two baffles would be better to keep it centered. Even a styrofoam injection packing. Whatevers cost efffective. Once the receiver and hitch are loose, they poke holes in the shipping box. I didn't lose any parts, but could have, if the bag got loose through a hole. The powder coating survived unbelmished. I love the product and recommend it to anyone looking for and OEM alternative. Simplem and solid! 20135

The trailer hitch itself works fine. Very solid compared to others. The installation instructions could use some additions. The holes you drill for the bolts and brackets to be fished through the frame tube seem to be very small. I could not get the bolt head to pass through this opening. I drilled a third hole towards the back of the vehicle in order to make the opening larger. Also, I used some Rustoleum spray paint to cover the bare metal from the holes I drilled. After the paint was dry and I fished in the bolts and brackets through the opening. Then, I covered the holes that I drilled with aluminum duct tape. I had a difficult time reinstalling the muffler hanger at the rear most of the car. I seem to have to defy the laws of physics to get it to work. 208450

Just installed the hitch. The video explaining installation is awesome. Hitch fit great and was easily installed. Why would you pay someone else to install it when it is so easy. Only thing I wished was that the kit would include 4 (not 2) fish wires. I messed them up when I installed the first two bolts and had to spend time getting them to work with the last two bolts. I also purchased the wiring harness and watched the installation video for it. Video made finding the Subaru furnished connector look easy. It was anything but. After cutting my hand I took the car to the Subaru dealer and paid them $25 to get the plug exposed. Hitch looks great. Would recommend to any one. 344083

Being a mechanical engineer, I was pleased with the quality of the structure and the welds of this hitch. Installation took about 1.5 hours of careful preparation and installation. I had trouble removing the rubber exhaust hangers, so I tried to install the hitch with the driver's side of the exhaust still attached. I couldn't do it; not enough room. However, the hangers go on much easier than they are to take off. The tip to use a lubricant (I used dish soap) is worth following. 17822

Installation was easy. It would have been better if the fish wire was about 3" longer. I spent a frustrating 20 minutes freeing the reinforcing plate from inside the frame when the fish wire slipped out without the bolt attached. In the end this was my fault for hurrying but a slightly longer fish wire would have been more forgiving. Bottom line - 1 hour and 20 minutes even with my mistake on the fish wire and saved $100s over the dealer installation costs. 235249

I received my hitch and had a local garage attempt to attach it, but the hitch was built improperly. I contracted etrailer.com and sent photos of hitch. Ian at etrailer.com shipped a new hitch and a no cost shipping label to return the hitch. Have now had the new hitch attached and fits fine. The bad hitch was a hassle but the customer service was excellent. Thanks to Ian W and George J . Ready to tow my boat. 397949

2014 Dodge Journey

We received the hitch for our 2014 Journey on time to install it and start using it the next day. The install went very well. Lubed the exhaust brackets and they popped right off. Route the green wire over the frame and it is plenty long and more secure. Fallowed the wiring and tubing along the frame with the power wire. Everything went well works good and looks good too. 138464

I use the hitch for pulling my utility trailer and also for my bike rack. It was relatively easy to install and looks good. It was also much less costly vs. a dealer install. I will continue to use your company. You are prompt and easy to deal with. Thanks 452301

This hitch has been everything I could have wanted. The fit (on my 2016 VW GTI) is excellent, and I don't recall it ever scraping, even on steep driveways. After 1 year, there's no sign of undue wear. I recommend this hitch. 474310

Thanks for following up with me. Everything worked well. However, my dog ate most of the wiring from underneath the trailer. So I will need to pull all the old wiring and replace it. If you could point me towards a wiring harness that would work for this I would appreciate it!

Thanks for the follow up on your purchases with us. Sorry to hear that you will need to re-wire your trailer. I have provided a link to our existing 4-way wiring harness bout or you that would offer the trailer side wiring harnesses that you would need, and you can filter based on your needs.

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Curt vs. Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Comparison for a 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • The Class II Curt Hitch # C12136 and Class II Draw-Tite Hitch # 36493 for your 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon are very similar, but every Class I and Class II and some Class III Curt Hitches require stabilizing straps to be used when towing non trailer loads. When stabilizing straps are not used on these hitches, the warranty is void and will no longer be covered by Curt. Draw-Tite hitches do not require stabilizing straps to be used on non trailer loads. The Curt and Draw-Tite Hitches have...

  • Look of Hitch and Ground Clearance with Curt Class II Trailer Hitch on 2016 Subaru Outback
  • Installing a trailer hitch like the Curt Class II Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12136 on your 2016 Subaru Outback can effect your vehicle's ground clearance at the rear. The cross tube of the trailer hitch will sit below the vehicle, as seen in the photo I have attached from the installation instructions, which can cause the hitch to limit your vehicle's ground clearance. I spoke with my contact at Curt and he was able to tell me that, for this hitch, the measurement from the mounting...

  • Why Does Curt Require Stabilizing Straps for Hitch-Mounted Bike Racks but Draw-Tite Does Not
  • The stabilizing straps are a warranty requirement that Curt recommends to help support the hitch. The strap reduces some of the tongue weight load on the hitch, reduces the tendency for attached items to move around while the vehicle is in motion, and prevents some vertical shock from being transferred to the hitch when going over bumps. Using a strap such as Item # 18050 with a Curt hitch will maintain the warranty and provide additional support. I've attached a review video that shows...
