Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

My pop up trailer needed new tires, and I couldn’t find any locally (not at the camper store, not at Walmart, not at Tires Plus). I easily found what I was looking for on this website and ordered two tires. They came quickly. Unfortunately, I bought the wrong ones (read the manual wrong). Return was easy and I got my new tires quickly. Yay! I would definitely do this again—super easy. 721077

I ordered a pair of Loadmaster Tires from etrailer.com for my Coleman Popup. The ordering process was very simple. The tires arrived very nicely packaged in sturdy boxes, on time and both in perfect condition. I did not expect them to be boxed up but I'm certain they were because of the rim. Ask the Experts about this Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Can Bias Trailer Tires Be Replaced with Radial Trailer Tires
Yes, as long as the actual tire size is the same, a radial ply tire like the Kenda ST185/80R13 # AM10208 will fit onto the wheel just the same as the bias alternative # AM1ST79 it's replacing. Radial trailer tires differ from bias models due to the 90 degree angle the cords run to the direction of travel (compared to a 32 degree angle on bias). This allows radials to flex a bit more for better ground contact and stability. The physical fit onto an existing wheel and trailer suspension...

  • Can ST175/80R13 Trailer Tire Replace ST175/80D13
You listed two trailer tire sizes with the only difference being the letter R in the first size and D in the second. Those letters indicate the tire's construction. R means radial and D means bias ply. Radial is the preferred styled and is perfectly compatible to replace a bias ply of same size without issue. For a tire and wheel with the size you mentioned we have the part # A13RSMPVD or for just a tire part # TTWTRTM1758013C.

  • Are Boat Trailer Radial Tires the Same as Truck Radial tires?
To answer your question, no; trailer tires and car/truck tires are not going to be the same and it's not recommended that you use truck tires on a boat trailer. There are times where LT (light truck) tires are used in RV applications, but generally speaking, trailer tires with the ST (special trailer) designation are designed with thicker side walls to help support the heavier vertical loads that occur when towing/hauling. A wheel/tire combo like the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire...

  • Looking for a New ST185/80D13 Trailer Tire or Tire and Wheel Combo for a Coleman Popup Camper
The Kenda Loadstar ST185/80D13 Trailer Tire, # AM1ST79, will fit on your current trailer wheels. PSI ratings are more important for tires than they are for wheels. Your current wheels should be able to support a 65 PSI with the new tires. Outer tire wear is typically related to under-inflation or a bent spindle. If you mount new tires and have the same issue, I recommend taking your trailer to a trailer service shop to have them inspect the spindles and the axle. If you do not want...

  • Should Radial or Bias Tires be Used for a 3500lb GVWR Pop Up Camper Trailer
I can clear this up for you really quick. Radial tires run cooler and track better than bias ply tires. Bias ply tires are typically a little more heavy duty and better for rough terrain. But you can use either one provided that the size and capacity is enough for the trailer. It is usually best to stick with the tires recommended by the trailer manufacturer. In this case it would be a bias ply tire. For just a tire in an ST185/80-13 we have # AM1ST79 which is rated for 1,725 pounds...

The main difference in these 2 sizes is the overall width of the mounted tire and the overall diameter. 175/80-13 will be 6.895 inches wide and have a diameter of 24.1 inches. 185/80-13 will be 7.289 inches wide and have a diameter of 24.4 inches. • Choosing Between Radial or Bias Ply Tires for Boat Trailer
The only instance where we might conceivably recommend a bias ply tire over a radial tire would be for farm or agricultural use where the tire would primarily be used on non-paved surfaces. This is due to the fact that the thicker sidewalls used on bias-ply tires would offer more stability. For a boat trailer, or any other trailer used on pavement a radial tire is preferable. A radial tire will have a more flexible sidewall, which provides better tread contact with the pavement. Radial...

Bias ply tires can have a larger diameter than a radial tire of the same size. This is due to the way they are constructed.
