Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Tires and rims are great. Customer service helped me in selecting the right tires. Couldn’t be more happy! Great products and great customer service. Will be back for sure.

Tires have worked out great ! Super happy!

Tires and rims look awesome. Just wish they weren’t already a year old when I got them. They need a better way to keep stock newer

I was very impressed with the informational videos to help make the decision and immediate follow up to my order. Furthermore a direct follow up with order from a live person. She was helpful and very willing to make sure everything is perfect. Fast shipping and was surprised how quickly it got here. On arrival everything is perfect. Thanks so much. I will be using you guys again! Can’t wait to pull my used trailer with the new wheels and tires!

Great looking wheels with nice tires!

I get a lot of comments from my fellow sailors now that I fitted these rims to my boat trailer. For me they weigh less than galvanized and never rust. The fact that they look great is a bonus. Took the trailer from California to Texas and back and the tires still look good.

Excellent customer service. Aluminum wheels and new radial tires from etrailer are improved look and quality for the Bunkhouse camper.

Absolutely great tires... I have driven all over Northern Michigan and the upper peninsula with temperatures far below zero in ice and snow never have had a problem with these tires!!!

The tires fit beautifully! Shipping was pretty quick, came in just over a week. Happy with my purchase, so far its all good!

These wheels and tire look like they will do the job, but i will not be able to try them on a long trip till spring, but they do look very nice.

Hello Steve, Thanks for all you help. The lug nuts I called about were actually 12mm x 1.25. Les Schwab was able to verify the size. So close to the 1/2 x 20 that they would go on, but did not feel right. Again thanks for your help, I am happy with the wheels and tires and appreciate the time you spent hrlping me out.

The tire and wheel package for my trailer that I ordered is excellent. Great quality at a good price. And if you haven’t ordered from E Trailer you need to! They always ship fast and have great customer service. THANKS!!!!

so far so good. 6 months

Rodney was professional and sent me updated shipping status. The Kenda tire and wheel look great.

Stickers on the front of rims are very difficult to remove. There is no way to remove them without using a scouring material, even after soaking area numerous times since delivery. No very happy having to spend more than 2 hours trying to make brand new tires and wheels, right out of the box, presentable. Didn’t anybody realize that putting stickers that say “how to remove stickers” would be unnecessary IF STICKERS WERE NOT PUT ONE IN THE FIRST PLACE!

I ordered the Kenda KR25 ST145R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Aluminum Wheel to replace the 12 x 5.30" tires that were on my tent trailer. I received the new wheels VERY fast, in only three days time and was very pleased. The tires are approx. 1/4" smaller in diameter than the ones they replaced, but since they have a flatter tread profile it is hardly noticeable. the tires are slightly wider than the ones they replaced, and the tread is a flat profile, like that of a car tire. The rims appear to be of high quality as do the tires. I am one happy camper!

We Americans love good looking wheels and tires. They can usually make or break the look of a vehicle. These rims are beautifully crafted and appear to be of good quality. Time will tell..
I'm trying a D range Radial trailer tire for the first time. With a couple of cross country trips planned for this summer, I'm hoping that they will run cooler and longer than the bias tires which seem to age very quickly.

Look great. Awesome value. Thank you!

Tires are working great on my whiskey barrel trailer. They look great.. fast delivery
Richard f - 12/05/2021

Tires arrived in a timely fashion. Items arrived undamaged. Really appreciated the emails from e-Trailer about the shipping process. Information on the site was fantastic. Enjoyed the video overviews.

These tires are as advertised and the wheels are also excellent. Excellent value, excellent quality. Additionally, when you call this merchant with a question they have an incredibly responsive customer service department, who bend over backwards to help you. Just an all around great business. With my two boat trailers and RV I will be back here exclusively in the future.
Thanks etrailer... Tow thumbs WAY UP!!!

Stylish rims and radial trailer tires for the price of bias-ply. Awesome!!!
These tires provide a higher load range and a smoother ride.
Ordered on a Monday and delivered to California on that Thursday!
Very satisfied.

Nicer than expected.

Just installed. The lug nut area was too small and required a thin walled socket. This might not be carried by everyone and cause trouble trying to change tire on the road. I will now have to carry this when I travel.
I haven't traveled yet with them on yet.

The tire and rim was, as I expected. Good product and price. Fast delivery. I purchased them for my Bunkhouse motorcycle camper. Rim is a perfect match along with the radial tire.

Tires & wheels look really good. They should work out alright, wiil look great with my trike.

The rims and tires look great. Unbeatable price that included shipping. Very fast shipping,

  • Is There a Down Side to Going to Higher than Needed Trailer Tire Load Range
There is no downside to going to a higher than needed trailer tire Load Rating. You will just have more weight capacity than you'd need. The part # AM31208 is a radial tire size ST145R12 which has a wheel with a 4 bolt mounting pattern on it. This would be a great solution for replacing your bias ply 4.80-12 tire size.

  • What is the Speed Rating for Kenda KR25 ST145R12 Radial Trailer Tire
Kenda ST145R12 trailer tire # AM31208 is rated for 65 miles per hour. I do not recommend doing 70 miles per hour when towing a trailer if for no other reason other than the tires are not rated for it. What will happen is that the higher sustained speed will produce excessive heat. Heat is the number 1 enemy of tires. What can make this even worse is that trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall compared to passenger vehicle tires. If under inflated the thicker sidewall will produce...

Both the wheel and tire are rated for a maximum capacity of 1220 lbs. There is no minimum acceptable pressure, a trailer tire should always be kept inflated to the maximum air pressure listed on the tire sidewall.
