Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Wheel and tire arrived within one week of order date. It is exactly as pictured on the web site. This is installed as the spare on a 4'X 6' open trailer with ramp and 2,000 lb capacity. I use the trailer to haul firewood, recycling branches and yard waste and scrap metal. From my initial inspection, the product appears to meet all the specs quoted and should work admirably for the intended use.

by:

I really like them i was surprised that they were higher than my original tires, si I yont have a spare now. But good value on the purchase
I'll just have to be aware of hight of tire.

The two 4.80-12 trailer tires came well packaged. They held some air but had to be inflated to 90 psi. The paint job was nice and I observed no chips. Each wheel had a black and red stripe around the outer ring. The tires were labeled LOAD STAR with a load rating of C and two ply sidewalls. I checked and Load Star tires are made by Kenda so that satisfied me. I am looking forward to many trouble free miles with these tires. Free and fast shipping was also appreciated.

Thanks for the follow up email. Everything is fine and I am satisfied.

I purchased the pair to install on a cargo trailer I pull behind my motorcycle. In all honesty, the tires and rims look good and fit fine. But due to travel restrictions, I have not been able to really put them on the road and see how they perform.

Comments
I mounted the the two new wheels on a small cargo trailer I pull behnd my motorcycle. On May 5th of 2021 I left on a 100 day, 18000-mile motorcycle road trip. These tires and the new hubs I enstalled were replacements of the 8-inch set up I wore out on an Alaska trip the year before. I still have your tires on the trailer but will probably replace them before my next big adventure. We rode through almost every state in the lower 48, We pulled that little trailer at MPH trying to outrun Huricane Elsa and a couple of tropical storms. It went through high speeds, high winds and yes water over the axils. Life us good when the tires are good.

I bought these 12 inch tires and rims to replace the old 8 inch. They were exactly what I needed. They fit perfectly on the hubs and I am sure they will keep the bearings lasting for a long time. I am very pleased with this purchase. Thanks for a great product.

Comments
I could not be happier! Has made many short trips to the lake with no problems. In October pulled it 150 miles and again no problems. Thank-you for a great product.

by:

Wheels/tires were shipped in a box that heavy enough to protect them from the shipping process. The tires were new and looked great. The price was 20% lower than the big box stores in my area and the wheels shipped free. Very pleased with this purchase, Billy in South Carolina

by:

Nice tires and rims. Just a little paint missing by one hole on each wheel.

I balanced both wheels and they didn't require much weight

by:

Fit perfect , I’m really happy I couldn’t find what I needed anywhere else and the price was unbeatable, thank you etrailer

by:

The wheel/tire assembly I purchased from etrailer arrived promptly and seems to be excellent quality. It replaced the wheel shown at the left in the picture, that failed on Interstate 95 north of Jacksonville, FL. Your wheel is so good we decided to buy another to avoid a similar experience with our other old wheel and tire in the center in the picture. The second wheel we purchased from you is obviously the one on the right. Thanks for the good products and service.

Wow...ordered Wednesday morning, received Friday morning. Pleased, and how exciting!
Used info on the etrailer site to pre-build new fenders (not shown) to accommodate new tires & rims - fit is perfect! The 480x12 LRC tires & rims (Kenda #AM30660) replace the too small 480x400-8 LRB's (see pic) that always worried me on day-long trips. The new tires give me a critical bit more ground clearance and are Load C rated to 65mph. They even came with high pressure metal inflation valves, which were an unexpected bonus. Mounted on the smallish-size trailer I use to haul my 12' rowboat, 6HP motor & gear all around our Adirondack Park lakes and Lake Ontario, I know they are just the thing that was needed to overcome highway miles and backwoods rocky trails too. Thanks etrailer and George J for great service, prices and products!

by:

My smallish tilt-bed utility trailer had old dry-rotted tires that would be flat after a week. etrailer fixed that with a new pair of shoes for the old girl... 4.80 - 12 tires on 4 1/2" 5 bolt rims that my 16 year old daughter installed by herself. Next morning we hauled 91 total 60 pound retaining wall blocks in 3 trips with no issues. The wheeled tires riding on new etrailer 5-leaf springs made the job a joy.

by:

tires and wheels came really fast. Was very pleased. Product looked great. Wish boat tires came with more tread but must be some reason.
Such a good feeling to have new load range c tires and wheels.. I should have done this two years earlier. It's never fun heading up fishing and worrying about having tire trouble. Great prices. Now I have a ugly great boat and good looking tires and wheels.

by:

Tires and wheels arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I put them on a trailer I found on Craigslist This is a homemade boat I just got done with. I took it out on the highway and drove 75mph for about 5 miles. My first impression was great product. The trailer tracked as straight as an arrow. I'll follow up if I have any problems.

by:

etrailer comes through again! I went to a local retailer for a trailer tire or two and he wanted to charge me about $70 just to put a new tire on an old rim. I went to etrailer.com and found a brand new tire And rim for $xx.xx and it was just what I was looking for. So I bought 2. I refer this company every chance I get to all my friends and family. The tires came two days early, and with free shipping ! I could not be happier. That’s how you do business. Thanks etrailer.com

by:

Exactly as described. None of the stores in my area had what I was looking for. Very professional. This website had a really good price for my wheels, I will be using this website again for purchases in the future.

by:

Exactly as described and ordered

by:

Just purchased a used landscape trailer that had wheels in poor condition.
I was able to get these new wheels and tires for about the same price it
would have cost me for just new wheels. Great price, fast and friendly
service and prompt delivery. Thank you for a pleasant experience.

by:

Great price, great value, no way you'll find these for this cost locally. Free shipping was nice bonus! Ordered with chrome lugs and chrome center caps. Had to pop the center covers off to make the caps fit. If you measure and the size is the same on the covers, order the next bigger size.

by:

Very good service. I was alerted about long delivery times on my original order and suggested a ready-to-ship, equivalent replacement.

by:

Tire came in very short order, fully inflated and in pristine condition. Tire and rim specs are identical to original tire on my utility trailer. Extremely happy with etrailer.com and will gladly do future purchases from them.

Comments
Very satisfied, tire and rim functioning as if original equipment.

Ordering online was easy and delivering was very fast!

by:

Easy to order. Packaging was adequate. All three wheels in a single cardboard box. Tires and wheels look nice. High quality valve stems. One rim had several lines from black felt tip marker on the back side. The paint coverage was not complete on the back of one of the three rims. Still Very good value. Would have been five star except the marks and paint on one as noted.

Finding tires (and wheels) to fit my Carry-All utility trailer proved a challenge until I stumbled upon etrailer.com. They not only carried the correct tire/wheel size I needed, but also in the load range I desired (there were several local and internet-based sources for B rated, but finding C rated tire and wheel combinations was another matter).

I ordered three tire/wheel combinations from etrailer.com, all of which arrived in fine shape nearly a year ago and remain in great shape. Ironically, the price of each tire delivered to my door was within a few dollars (higher or lower) than the lower weight range tires I located in multiple sources elsewhere.

While I do not put many miles on my utility trailer, it is stored outside and the original set of wheels started to rust after several years in the Pacific Northwest. There was also some indication of weather checking in the original tires, prompting me to order replacements for the original two and added a spare in the event of unforeseen need. There is no sign of rust on the wheels nor weather checking on the tires; they still appear new.

When the time comes for another set of replacement tires and/or tire and wheel combinations for my utility trailer, I will definitely turn to etrailer.com for that purchase. Great product, customer service (delivery to door) and reasonable price for new tires and wheels.

Comments
After one year, still in the Pacific NW and housed outdoors, the wheels and tires continue to look great - with minimal wear and no sign of weather checking. Again, should I need to replace either one of them, I intend to revisit etrailer.com.

It was easy to find what I wanted on your site , this is the second set I have purchased from you have been satisfied in both cases.

To replace the 4.80-12 size tires on your 2005 Viking Pop Up Camper, I recommend looking at the Taskmaster # AM30660. This 4.80-12 bias tire is mounted to a nice 12 inch white spoke wheel that has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The tire itself provides a maximum load of 990 pounds at 90 psi and an excellent maximum speed rating of 81 mph. The tire and wheel combo includes a 2-year limited warranty. • What Does the 6 Ply Rating Mean for Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire AM30660
A ply is a cord embedded in the rubber of the tire. It does not make contact with the road. Trailer tire # AM30660 has a 6-ply rating but has fewer physical plies in its construction. The reason for this, which is common for all tires, is the materials used in tire construction have gotten so much better that a tire can have a higher ply rating with fewer plies.

  • Importance of Trailer Wheel Pilot Hole Diameter
The importance of matching a wheel's pilot hole diameter to the part of the hub that fits through it depends on the type of wheel. A hub-centric wheel uses the pilot hole to center the wheel on the hub and also to bear some of the total weight load (the rest going on the wheel bolts). Hub-centric wheels typically use wheel bolts rather than lug nuts to attach to the hub. If your wheels are hub-centric, you would want new wheels with the same pilot hole diameter as your current wheels because...

  • Bias Ply vs. Radial Trailer Tire for Utility Trailer
Yes, radial tires are much preferred over bias ply tires for a number of reasons. The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, and the cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability,...

  • Speed Rating and Air Pressure Maximum for Kenda 4.80-12 Trailer Tires
First, Kenda tires are rated for 65 miles per hour. Exceeding that speed for an extended period of time will generate excessive heat and can lead to failure. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. This is because trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall compared to passenger vehicle tires and if under inflated the thicker sidewall will generate excessive heat.

In this case a tire rated for 1300-lbs would provide a good safety margin. This tire is suitable for highway use on your personal watercraft trailer. Be sure that the tire is always inflated to its rated maximum cold tire pressure of 90-psi.
