Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Order to install went perfectly. Good quality product at a fair price. Received the wheel/tire combos in 3 days, @ no shipping cost. Just put them on...perfect!

Tire and rim was just the product for my utility trailer. Accompanied by the spare tire bracket, it fits perfectly. Delivery was very prompt. This was the second purchase from etrailer that I made. Previously I purchased the trailer hitch that I mounted on my car. Great company to do business with!

Super fast delivery and just what i needed. High quality tires and wheels from etrailer.

Arrived ahead of schedule, perfect fit.

Great tires and price. I just mounted them on the trailer this week and ghey look great. Planning to pull my bass boat to Canada this summer!

great tire at a great price! Janet is the best! fast shipping, ordered thursdday, told delivery monday and they arrived friday!

Excellent service and contact. Delivery prompt and product was perfect. I would use this "etrailer" source again. The source provided clear and thorough product information and guidance for accurate ordering. Unusually precise and accomodating source.

just fine. no problems whatsoever

Always a quick turn around with etrailer

Paula was very helpful. Knowledgeable and courteous. Product came quickly and packaged securely. Haven’t used the trailer spare tire yet but at least got the correct size delivered. Not so trusting of tow strap. We shall see. Thank you

Nice wheels and tires at good price, delivered promptly and in good shape. I look forward to mounting them and driving off down the road.

I don't often write reviews but I am so impressed with etrailer's website and the tires I received that I'm making an exception this time. First, the amount of information on the website was superb, all the spec's , videos, etc were excellent and helped me be sure I was going to get what I wanted. The price was good so I ordered. The tires arrived in under a week and are exactly as described. More importantly, they were "fresh" meaning that they had not been sitting on a rack somewhere for a long time. Tires, like milk, need to be fresh when bought as trailer tires usually die of old age rather that wearing out the tread. Anyway, the tires arrived in great shape (good packaging) and I am delighted with my purchase. I'll be buying more from this excellent company.

Great service from etrailer as usual. Product as described.

Fast convenient stress free service. Delivered on time and for a great price.

Excellent tires/wheels for the quality and price!

I shopped around and was quite impressed when I came across this on-line retailer. The web site's ease of selecting, narrowing down the options, and ordering made me confident that I was getting the right size wheel and type of tire for my husband's boat trailer.'s customer service was EXCELLENT. I placed the order on a Thrusday night and in LESS THAN two hours, had shipping/tracking information and three emails to let me know the status.

The ease of ordering, excellent communications, and speedy delivery will make this my go-to site for all of our future trailer needs.

Highly recommend!

Customer service was above and beyond what I expected.

These have been great tires. They wear real good.

Ordered spare trailer wheel and tire and hubcaps. Hard to find the exact items on web, but etrailer had everything. Received correct order promptly.

The wheel/tires arrived in great condition and is exactly as ordered. It took awhile before I received them due to oem supplier delays, but etrailer did a great job in keeping me informed and offering ready-to-ship alternatives if time was critical for me (it wasn’t).

Tires and rims look good and were offered at a great price. Time will tell if the Kenda tires holdup to normal road use.

The product is exactly what I needed, I recently bought an old boat trailer and the wheels were dry rotted, so I needed them replaced. Etrailer really made it easy to find and purchase a new wheel. definitely going to look to them for my next trailer accessories purchase.

Etrailer has excellent products well priced. Tires and wheels already mounted and shipped out in no time made replacement simple.

Fast delivery, product as described. Thank you!

Fortunatley have not had to use it but it matches up to existing tires and rims perfectly

I'm very happy. it was shipped very quick and it was in good condition when I got it. your time and help was excellent. thank you so much. I will do more business with you.

Great price for tire and wheel cheapest on the internet ! Thanks !

  • Lowering Height of Cargo Trailer to Fit in Garage
Going with a 12 inch wheel versus a 15 inch wheel is only going to lower your trailer by half the difference in diameter, which in this case would be 1-1/2 inches, which won't be enough to get the trailer into your garage. Your friend's idea of using PVC pipe as rollers is intriguing, but I would measure the height from the bottom of the axle to the highest point of the trailer, to see if that distance plus the diameter of the rollers is shorter than the height of the garage door opening....

  • Can a Load Range C Trailer Tire be Used in Place of a Load Range B Trailer Tire
If the load range B tires will sufficiently cover the gross trailer weight capacity then that is what you should go with. Going with a higher capacity tire would not allow the trailer to carry more weight because it is still limited by the axle and suspension. You could go with the higher capacity tire but with more plies in the construction it could heat up faster and you could also experience a stiffer ride. I have included a link to the right to our help article on trailer tires for you.

  • Can I use a Trailer Wheel with a 3-1/4 Inch Pilot Hole to Replace a Wheel with a 3 Inch Pilot Hole
If the wheel is stud-piloted, then the pilot hole hole does not matter. However, if the wheel is centered using the pilot hole, then you will need to find a wheel with the same size. Check the holes for the bolts or studs. If they are beveled then the wheel is stud piloted. The lug nut should have a matching bevel. Other than that, just make sure the bolt-pattern is the same as the current wheel.

  • Can a Trailer Wheel with Smaller Center Pilot Hole be Used than Stock Wheel with Larger Pilot Hole
On a wheel that attaches to the hub using lug nuts, the center pilot hole of the wheel does not have to be an exact size. As long as it will still fit over the center of he hub like it is supposed to you can use the smaller size because the wheel centers on the hub using the lug nuts.

  • Does the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 inch Rim Come Balanced
The tire and wheel combos we carry are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. What our tire manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).

  • How to Know When to Replace the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire AM30580
There are wear bars between the treads of the # AM30580 that once the tread of the tire has worn down to that level it would be time to replace them. Look for a raised rubber section between the treads of the tires that are higher than the base of the treads. That being said most trailer tires don't end up wearing out before its time to replace them. Typically age is what causes them to need replacement. You want to replace them at around 6 years of age or if you see dry rotting or cracking.

  • Can 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tires Be Upgraded to 4.80-12 Tires
In order to upgrade from 4.80/4.00-8 tires to 4.80-12 tires you'll need an additional 4" of clearance from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender. That said, you also need to allow about 3" for suspension travel. If you have this much space I recommend using the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel part # AM30580. I won't be able to confirm this with the information provided unfortunately.

  • Can A Wheel With A Larger Pilot Hole Work As A Replacement For A Wheel With A Smaller Pilot Hole?
The 2.8" pilot hole will typically be found on wheels in the 8" to 10" range, so having it on a 12" wheel is a little odd. With that being said, most trailer wheels, if not all in this size, are lug centric and are centered by the torque of the lug bolts. This means the pilot holes is less important than that on vehicle wheels, which are hub centric and use the pilot hole to center the wheel. Due to this, you will have no issue using a wheel with a larger pilot hole diameter, like the Kenda...

  • Replacement Boat Trailer Wheel and Tire Recommendation for a 4.80-12 Tire
Based on the PSI rating of your current tire and the fact that the letter B and R are somewhat similar in shape I would be willing to bet you have a Load Range B on your trailer. The Load Range B tires in the 4.80-12 size have a 60 psi max rating. For a wheel and tire in the size you need with the same rating you would want the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel # AM30580. This wheel has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. • Which Load Range Tires for Light Duty Utility Trailer w/ 1450 lb GVWR
Since the Load Range B rating of 1570 per axle and the Load Range C rating of 1980 lbs per axle are both above the GVWR of the trailer in question, no it doesn't really matter. However if it were me personally, I'd go with the Load Range C # AM30660 over the # AM30580 load range B. The first problem is that you are running lower air pressure than what the tire is rated for. Trailer tires should ALWAYS be inflated to the maximum air pressure as indicated on the tire. The reason is that trailer tires are constructed with a thicker sidewall than passenger vehicle tires. Because of the thicker sidewall, if the tires are under-inflated there will be more heat build up and than can cause the tires to fail and as you are seeing wear out quickly.
