Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the replacement Stay Put Cradle for Thule Bike Racks. This unit is designed to replace one Stay Put Cradle for your Thule Roadway, Parkway, Hitching Post Pro and Passage Bike Racks. It's made from a very durable plastic construction of black and color. The tube right here has a diameter of 1". It is designed to work with the optional Anti-Sway Cage that would keep bikes from moving front to back during transport. It's a really nice design.
The optional Anti-Sway Cage, if you don't have one, it is sold separately and available at etrailer.com. I also want to point out that the unit has these deep channel guides. These are going to guide the cables that run underneath the top tube frame of your bike. And so these cable guides provide an area for the cables to rest that keeps your bike cables safe and secure and keeps them from rubbing the frame of the bike during transport. The strap that goes over the bike frame is not included.
And installation is pretty easy. You simply need to remove the old cradle from the arm and slide the new one into place. That's going to do it for today's look at the replacement Stay Put Cradle for Thule Bike Racks.

I needed replacement parts for my Thule Apex 9027 (my best friends dog went to town on all the non-metal parts of my bike rack). Thule told me they do not make replacement cradles for this rack - it would have been a waste to have to buy a new rack. So I tried etrailer. I initially ordered the wrong size cradle (ordered for a 1 inch tube, needed for a 1 1/4 inch tube). Matt at etrailer was more then helpful. He helped search for the right cradle, pulled it from stock and called me back to make sure it sounded like the right fit!!
Who does that anymore??? EXCELLENT customer service!!!
This part worked perfectly! No need to spend $100's of extra dollars on a new rack.
I have a 15+ year old Thule hitching post bike rack with 1" tubing. One of the cradle straps broke and I've been looking for a replacement. REI couldn't help me. I looked on Amazon but found what I wanted on etrailer.com for under $10. The old cradle had an integrated strap (bad design). I bought the 853-7887 cradle and a separate strap (852-3006-001). Worked great. It took a bit of elbow grease and wd-40 to wiggle it into the tubing. But it'll work just fine.
Good quality and a good fit for Thule Trailway 2 bike rack 992.
Old Thule rack was getting kinda ratty looking, particularly the original rubber cradle/straps. These replacements are going to extend the life of my rack for years to come. As many people say they are hard to get on(deadblow followed by a touch of lubricant), but once in position they definitely look like they're there to stay. I've already ordered four more and a full complement of antisway cradles + straps to finish out my 4 bike rack. Etrailer shipping was quick and their customer service is solid.
I do love these cradles and they worked fine for me AFTER a bit of alterations. So the 4 I ordered and received 9/15/17 DID NOT fit on the 1" pipe that my bike rack has equipped. Granted my rack isn't a Thule, these cradles are designed and claim to accommodate 1" diameter pipes all the same. So if you zoom in on the product pic on this website you can see the hole dimension shows 1" in diameter and SMOOTH. What you DON'T see are the ridges that are inside the hole of the cradles that I received, making that 1" diameter SIGNIFICANTLY smaller. Small enough to NEVER fit on a 1" tube. How do I know? Because I had to grind them off considerably for the cradles to even start go slide on. I did leave about 1/3 of each of the grooves on so the fit was tight enough to not slide around. So be warned, you may have to modify if you do receive these with the ridges inside. I used an oscillating spindle sander with 7/8" bit and I targeted each ridge individually as opposed to a 1" bit that would probably take too much off. Here's a pic. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take pics of the ridges prior to sander them off.
These cradles stay exactly where I placed them. They don't slide or rotate on the bike carrier as my Bell cradles liked to do. Very weather resistant and are in great condition after 1 year. When I need more cradles for my bike carrier to replace my Bell cradles, these will be my 'go to' cradles.
Excellent Thule quality and the products arrived on time.
Great price, delivery, and packaging. These fit well on my bell bike rack and look much more durable than the originals.
I received the replacement Thule bike rack parts and they fit perfectly. The delivery was quick and items were as described, direct replacement, easy to install and very good price. Attached is picture of the replacement cradles and straps on the Thule Parkway carrier.
Thanks again, will definitely buy from etrailer.com again.
Perfect fit for my older Thule carrier. Etrailer is my first stop for bicycle carriers and replacement parts. Exact parts, excellent service and support, good value and fast shipment are four good reasons to use etrailer.com.
I used these to retrofit an old Thule Metro trunk rack that just had plain arms without cradles. It took some serious twisting and wrenching to get the cradles past the bend in the arms, but it can be done. These cradles plus the Anti-Sway Cage (853-7758) are a great upgrade. They keep the bike well away from the car and seem very secure.
Does the job. A lot better than the original equipment for the bike rack.
I give the product 4 stars. The reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because the cleats where the straps attach are a bit weak and tend to bend and eventually break after a couple of years of use. Apart from that it is a great product.
this is a perfect replacement for the original that fell apart. Only took a couple of minutes to install.
Easy to order. Replacement is in perfect, brand new condition and exactly as pictured. Received in a reasonable amount of time. I greatly appreciate they even have a short video clip on the "how to" to remove the old cradles from bike rack.
I purchased this anti-sway cage and cradle to retro fit to my older Thule Passage rack. I bought the rack used from Craigslist and it did not have any clamps on the bike support arms, only some black plastic protective sleeves. I believe the rack was an older version of the 910XT.
Thanks to the details on this site and awesome pictures I was confident that they would fit (pic shows all the dimensions was very handy)
The items arrived in a well packed box with no instructions, but all you need to do is slide them onto the bars (and I am sure there is plenty of info and help on etrailer if I had asked :) )
The older passenger rack has upturned ends on the support arms so the cradles did not slide right on, but after a little WD-40 (which will eventually wash off, but the best thing to slide rubber grips on to new bars is actually hairspray. It allows the item to slide and then drys slightly sticky. I use it when I change grips on my MTB) they slide right on.
I haven't checked them on the car yet but I am sure they will be great.
Thanks
Got them on over 1" diameter bars on a 20-year-old Yakima bike rack. Rub the bars first with [dish washing soap] or similar product = enough lubrication to make getting them on easier, but then dries so the cradles stay where you want them.
Remember to buy the straps if you don't already have them - cradles don't work/secure your bike without them, but don't come with them.
The cradle is bigger than I expected, making it hard to position my wife's bike over it (not much space between the elements of the frame). The extensions at the bottom are to hold the sway stabilizers (another extra purchase + more straps if you need them). May carve off the bottom extensions of one cradle to ease that. When the bikes are tightly strapped down, I don't think I'll need the sway stabilizers.
Great service. Great prices. Prompt shipping. Solution I couldn't find anywhere else.
We have a Bell two-bike carrier that we like but the Bell rubber cradles rotted and crumbled to pieces after a few years. I had trouble finding any that looked well-made, but finally found the Thule brand at etrailer.com and liked the look of them. I ordered these with some replacement Thule straps and am very happy with them. I'm also very happy with etrailor's fast delivery. They came a lot faster than I expected.
These cradles fit our Bell bike carrier perfectly and look very nice, though they're hard to slide on. I really struggled to get the first one on, then I used some powdered graphite and that helped with the others. That's not a bad thing, though, as our old Bell cradles would slide back and forth with little effort, while these should stay exactly where you put them unless you purposely move them.
I think they are very high quality and especially like the little grooves that protect the bike cables running along the frame. I highly recommend these to anyone needed replacement cradles for carriers with 1" bars. I also recommend getting some of the Thule rubber straps to go with these cradles. They're a good combination.
This product was used to hack an inexpensive bike rack from a big retailer.
I got the Thule cradles item 853-7887 to replace the red cradles on the [...] fold-down trailer hitch bike rack and sooo glad I did! These were easy to slide on to replace the original cradles that used velcro to "secure" the bikes in, but those velcro straps were anything but secure and I had to also use straps and bungees and what-all. Now with the Thule straps and these Thule cradles and also the Thule anti-sway stabilizers, it is a snap to load up the bikes securely. My inexpensive bike rack now performs like a pricey one!
So far, so good. We watched the videos on how to install and had no issues at all. A bit of soapy water and a rubber mallet to get things started, and voila! The old cradles were not too trustworthy, thanks to broken plastic tabs. Let’s hope the new ones last many miles!
Have a very old Thule bike rack that still functions great but some of the hold down straps were lost. First initiated a purchase of what I thought were the old straps but received newer straps. On this order I purchased the newer bike rest that the straps would work on. They fit the old rack perfectly. Now have and old rack with modern bike cradles and appropriate straps.. Thule was great with the assistance and now have a rack that may last another 15 years.
Thule thanks for a great and upgradeable product
I added these high quality Thule bike cradles as replacements to cheap plastic ones that came mounted on my $30 non-Thule bike rack. The 1" pipe size was the same, making this retrofit an excellent solution to an annoying problem. The cheap plastic holders on the rack I purchased broke the first time I used them.
Does the job its supposed to do. easy i nstallation
